Editors LetterWelcome to the July/

August issue of Princes Risborough View magazine.

Believe it or not, this is our ‘summer’ issue and we would all love to have some sunshine, even if just for a couple of weeks! So many events have been adapted and somewhat compromised by the wet weather this year and even the Jubilee weekend was a challenge, although very much enjoyed by a great many of us.

The Big Event for Risborough this summer is the Festival, which takes place from Saturday July 7th until Sunday July 15th. Warm, sunny weather is booked along with an extensive range of events and celebrations by local organisations, community and businesses. There is something for everyone, for all ages and abilities: sporting events, children’s activities, live bands, shows and much more.

We have had the pleasure of being selected to produce, print and distribute the Festival programme this year. We have really enjoyed

being part of this important, calendar event for Risborough and feel very privileged to have been entrusted with ensuring that each event, organisation and business has been promoted correctly. We really hope you enjoy reading the programme which you can pull out of the centre of this issue, and that you find it easy to pick out which events you will enjoy.

Of course, there is a great deal of work involved in putting the Festival together and the committee have worked tirelessly to make sure that things go smoothly and everyone enjoys the week. Our part of this organisation has been to produce the Festival Programme, and we would like to say a special thanks to Ann Phillips, Richard Stevenson, Trevor Fitch and Richard Daniels, without whom this would not have been possible. We do hope you feel we’ve done a good job?

Have a wonderful summer and enjoy the Festival. Our next issue will be in September (delivered during the last week of August).

One of the most challenging tasks for any gardener is to find plants that will prosper in dry shade, such as beneath a conifer hedge or under thick shrubs. The soil here is poor and parched, the established trees robbing it of any real nutrition or goodness. But all is not lost, there are plants that will be able to fend for themselves in these conditions. For ground cover shrubs, the Cotoneaster family contains a number of prostrate, ground hugging members that will give you excellent results. The varieties ‘Dammeri’, ‘Coral Beauty’ and ‘Horizontalis’ are all evergreen with the extra benefits of white flowers in the summer and red berries in the winter months. Berberis are notoriously tough and easy to grow, most varieties are evergreen, although the more showy types tend to be deciduous. Both will live successfully in these poor

dry conditions. ‘Bagatelle’ , ‘Nana’ and ‘Green Carpet’ are part of the Thunbergii branch of the Berberis family, and are small and tough. Another for groundcover is ‘Vinca’, commonly known as ‘Periwinkle’. These plants are very low growing with a nice bright flower, most commonly blue - but do beware, ‘Vinca’ can sometimes be a little too enthusiastic for some gardens and if left to it’s own devices can in time dominate the bed, smothering other plants - but if you require some tough weedbeating groundcover, this might just be what you are looking for.If a little more height is required in these conditions, consider ‘Buxus’ - the common Box plant with its rich evergreen leaves, ‘Aucuba’ the spotted laurel or ‘Mahonia’ which will serve up fragrant yellow flowers throughout the winter. These

three are tough evergreens that, in time, can reach around 1.5m.If your garden has a spot of moist shade, again that is not a problem. If you fancy planting a tree, go for one of the ‘Crataegus’ or Hawthorn family. ‘Paul’s Scarlet’ is an old favourite with lots of red flowers in late Spring or any of the ‘Salix’ or Willows. For groundcover, ‘Alchemilla Mollis’ known as Lady’s Mantle is a real gem. This plant is almost indestructible! With a downy green foliage and sulphur yellow flowers, it will defeat any conditions - if you’re in doubt come up to the garden centre to see a big clump that self seeded a few years ago and is now thriving despite being completely ignored! One of the most popular choices for moist shade is the ‘Hosta’. This is a big family of plants with a huge variety of size and height, foliage and flower. Just a couple of things to bear in mind is that Hostas will completely disappear in the winter once the frosts have arrived, but fear not, the plant will appear again in the Spring unscathed. The other point is that they are a big favourite of slugs. You can get round this by planting your Hosta in a pot with some copper tape, which slugs will not cross, around the rim - or surround the plant with grit - again, the slugs will not crawl across a sharp surface.Happy Gardening. See you soon,

Simon, Alison, Edith the Jack Russelland all at Askett Nurseries.

Plants For Shady Places…

14

We must all have those difficult spots in our gardens where the sun never penetrates , and the ground is almost constantly in shade. Whilst the vast majority of plants need lots of light to really thrive, there are a number that will happily live without the benefits of sunshine .

Hi, my name is Shenzi and I’m a 1 year old Border Terrier Cross. Although I say so myself, I’m a fantastic little girl with lots of potential.

I just love running around and chasing toys and, again showing my modesty, think I would make a great agility or flyball dog, and so would love to go to training classes for the tricks and socialisation. I’m

a loveable girl, and in the right home will make a loyal companion. I’m OK with other dogs, not so sure about cats, and would suit a family home with children aged 7 and over.

If you are interested in offering me, or any other dog, a loving home please visit Stokenchurch Dog Rescue any day except Thursday between 2pm and 4pm, or give them a call on 01494 482695.

It would be great to see you!

It’s Summer Show Time!

By Mike Payne

With Summer now well and truly with us thoughts turn to lots of exciting events being held all around the area, this year more than any other, thanks to Her Majesty the Queen’s wonderful landmark. One regular event that has spanned several of those special Royal celebrations is our own Monks Risborough Horticultural Show and from humble beginnings it has now blossomed into one of the best of its kind.

I have been studying the history of the event and found that it began way back in 1895 when a lady called Miss Eden was the driving force behind the formation of a new Horticultural Society in Monks Risborough. She was renting Askett Lodge, on the Aylesbury Road, at the time and she gathered together a number of the villagers, who were enthusiastic gardeners. The idea was to give them a showcase to exhibit all the best flowers and produce that they could muster. Her enthusiasm quickly rubbed off on the villagers and she arranged several fundraising events to raise money for the new Society. For instance, on the 8th of July that year, in the grounds of the Lodge at Askett, she organised a musical concert which was hugely successful. Lots of the villagers showed their musical

talent, including the Misses Martin and Mr Chilton, and later Miss Eden herself gave a solo on her concertina. It was a full and assorted musical concert that went on all evening and the press of the time recorded that “Miss Eden was thanked for her kindness in arranging such excellent entertainment and it was hoped that it would be the first of many such events in the parish. Hopefully the Flower Show, in aid of which the concert had been given, would be as great a success.”

On August 5th, the August Bank Holiday Monday that year, the first show took place in Mr F.R.Bishop’s field adjacent to Askett Lodge. There were over 230 entries into that first show, of flowers, vegetables and craftwork. Miss Eden, on the day, provided provisions in the tea tent and people came not only from Princes Risborough and Monks Risborough, but from all the other outlying villages too. Typically for a Bank Holiday, persistent drizzle dampened proceedings but all in all it was an excellent first show. Miss Eden would be proud to know that the show still carries on all these years later, thanks to the work of the current dedicated committee led by an enthusiastic Chairman, Noel

Murtagh and our very own ‘Miss Eden’, Anne Maltby. This year’s show, on August 4th, promises to be a cracker with lots to see and lots to entertain young and old. Whether we can compete with 1895 when, “Mr George Lacey showed dwarf beans, and Albert Pauling showed everyone a massive wasp’s nest” I’m not sure, but we will do our best.

In those early days the first Honorary President of the Society was the 7th Earl of Buckinghamshire, Sydney Hobart Hampden Mercer Henderson. Now his first name(s) we know, but alas, the newspaper reports of the day never identified Miss Eden’s first name. If anyone knows it I would be grateful if you could tell me please. I am also interested in hearing of your own experiences of visiting or competing in the show, or any other memories you may have of it. Please get in touch.

Technology and holidays go together like sun, sea and sangria, and you don’t need to spend a fortune to benefit.

For example, noise-cancelling headphones can remove unwanted noise such as the hum of aircraft engines or the drone of bus wheels, and you can pick up a decent pair for as little as £20.

If you’d like to listen to the radio on your travels the Roberts Sports 925 (£16) has FM, MW and LW reception in a handy travel-sized case. If you want UK digital radio too, Roberts also makes the Sports DAB/FM radio, which receives both analogue and digital broadcasts for around £65.

Many of us have MP3 players or phones with built-in music players, and there’s a dizzying range of travel speakers to choose from. At £14.99 the X-Mi X Mini II offers a surprising amount of volume for very little money, while Gear4’s StreetParty Compact iPod and iPhone dock is a battery-powered speaker set that can also charge your iPhone or iPod when it’s plugged into the mains.

Some of the most useful travel gadgets are among the least high-tech: the Bite Relief Click (£5.99) promises to reduce the discomfort of insect bites by using a piezo-electric pulse to reduce

itching, delivering instant relief in 5-10 ten clicks. In tests, Which? magazine found that such devices really do “provide a significant degree of relief”.

Another low-tech gadget is the Quik Pod (£23.99), a telescopic arm for your camera that enables you to take self-portraits in front of landmarks without having to find somebody to take the picture for you. There’s even a little mirror so you can make sure you’re not going to end up with a photo of your torso.

Don’t forget a toolkit, either: Victorinox’s Swisscard Lite mini tool kit is effectively a Swiss Army knife

flattened to the size of a credit card, and it includes a knife, scissors, an LED light, a screwdriver, magnifying lens, tweezers, pen and ruler. Just don’t take it in your hand luggage if you’re travelling by plane.

2012’s most popular travel gadget is the ebook reader, which is freeing up space in thousands of people’s suitcases. While devices such as Apple’s new iPad (£399) make great ebook readers for planes and trains, they’re useless in direct sunlight: if you

want to read on the beach, an ebook reader with an e-ink screen is a much better option. Amazon’s Kindle is the market leader at £89 for the basic Kindle and £109 for the Kindle Touch, but the Kobo

eReader Touch Edition (£79.99) and Sony Reader Wi-Fi (£129) are very good alternatives.

The one thing most travel gadgets have in common is that they need some sort of power, but you don’t need to carry a charger for every single bit of kit: you can buy USB chargers for around £1.99 that plug into your hire car’s cigarette lighter and that can charge gadgets such as ebook readers, sat-navs

and mobile phones, while multi-device chargers such as the Skross World Travel Adapter 2 (£17.99) offer USB device charging

via a standard wall socket.

If you think you’ll be spending most of your time away from home comforts, you can even charge your devices with solar power: the PowerTraveller

Explorer Solar Power Charger (around £47) is compatible with most mobile phones, MP3 players, Bluetooth headsets and many other digital devices.

Headaches

According to statistics headaches affect more than 10 million people in the UK. Fortunately for the sufferers, most are easily treated.

Most headaches aren’t serious and can be treated with simple lifestyle changes such as rest, reducing stress, keeping hydrated and eating correctly. Osteopathic treatment can also be very beneficial for some types of headache.

When patients attend The Luxton Clinic with a headache they are thoroughly screened to ensure their suitability for

treatment by taking a detailed medical history and conducting a few simple tests.

Tension headaches are probably the most common form of headache and are caused by muscular and tension over the scalp and around the eyes. Common sites include the back of the skull where the muscles of the neck attach, the temple where muscles that move the jaw are located, and the forehead. It is thought that pain is caused when chronic tightness in these muscles causes them to tire, obscure blood flow, or irritate

nerves. These headaches can be linked to poor vision or incorrect prescription glasses, dehydration, stress and fatigue.

Tension headaches may last anywhere from 15 minutes to a period of weeks or months. The pain is often described as a band-like tightness or pressure. It may be felt at the back of the head, upper neck, temples and around the eyes. Gentle stretching of the muscles, traction and articulation of the neck during osteopathic treatment often helps to calm the symptoms.

Shoestring Productions – Play ReadingsAfter the success of our recent production of Peter Coke’s ‘Breath of Spring’, we have begun working hard to find a new play for next year! Choosing a play is great fun but it isn’t as easy as it sounds. Of course the main consideration is a great script but as we are just a small group we also have to think about the cast we have available, the staging requirements and the budget too. To do this we hold a number of informal play reading evenings throughout the Spring and Summer, where we discuss ideas and read through scenes of possible pieces, to get a feel of whether they would be suitable for us. If you are interested in acting in a Shoestring production, then a play reading evening would be a great place to start.Shoestring Productions are a small friendly group who welcome new adult members both on-stage and back-stage. If you would like to join us please contact either Lynda Maynard on 01844 273630 or Fiona Gammon on 01844 275216 for more information.

Risborough Rangers Football ClubJust to let you know that we finished our season yesterday in the Anagram Records Trophy Final at Letchworth and unfortunately lost 1-0 to Baldock Town. The game was a tight affair of little chances from both sides but the winner came 8 minutes from the end when a shot from just outside penalty area that moved on route away from James Tovey and just touched his leg but flew into the net. Risborough had a couple of good chances at beginning of second half with Lee Haynes lobbing the keeper which went just wide and Rory Nish nearly connected with a cross when the goal was gaping but he stooped to head but just could not contact with the ball.It was a gallant effort from Bob Rayners Rangers and it has been an amazing season for the team and also would also like to thank the tremendous following Risborough took as well over 150 fans in a crowd of 325(Anagram Final Record) made the 100 mile round trip.
