Editors Letter
Welcome to the December Issue of Princes Risborough View.Firstly, we would like to wish everyone a very happy Christmas and a happy and healthy New Year.
We are still looking to expand our distribution in the next couple of months and desperately need more deliverers for Risborough and the surrounding areas so please give us a ring if you are interested and see advert on page 46.
With many of you wondering what presents to buy for Christmas this year, why not look through the magazine for ideas and help support your local businesses at the same time. We also have lots of festive events advertised and some are during the first few days of December so watch out for the dates and don’t miss out. On page 26 we have a list of events taking place in the town
including the popular turning on of the lights to mark the start of festivities in Risborough.
Our front covers have always been a priority for us but we are keen to have more local pictures during next year so if you have a lovely photograph that you think would look good on our front cover, then please send it to [email protected] with your details. We will give you a mention and your picture will grace the coffee tables of many homes around the area.
We would once again like to thank Mike Payne for all his excellent articles and also extend a message from Mike, to wish a very Happy Christmas to all of you who enjoy reading them each issue.
This year we will be publishing a January magazine so you won’t have to wait long until the next issue but in the meantime, we hope you all enjoy the Christmas break and that 2013 brings good things for you all.

IngrEdIEntS: •250g butter, softened•250g dark muscovado sugar•4 medium eggs, beaten•350g plain flour•2 tsp ground mixed spice•½ tsp ground cinnamon•½ tsp ground cloves•Finely grated zest of 1 lemon•800g mixed dried fruit•100g glace cherries, rinsed,
dried and chopped•100g chopped mixed nuts
For thE dEcoratIon•750g marzipan• Icing sugar, for dusting•4 tbsp apricot jam, warmed and sieved•Mixed coloured glace cherries,
walnut halves, Brazil nuts and chopped dried apricots
MEthod:1. Preheat the oven to 150C/300F/gas 2.
Grease and line the base and sides of a 20cm square cake tin with a double thickness of greased, greaseproof paper.
2. Place the butter and sugar in a large bowl and cream together until pale and fluffy. Gradually beat in the eggs. Sift together the flour and spices then fold into the creamed mixture. Fold in the lemon zest, dried fruit, glace cherries and nuts and mix thoroughly.
3. Spoon the mixture into the prepared cake tin and smooth the surface. Use the back of a metal spoon to make a slight dip in the centre (this will help to give an even rise). Bake in the preheated oven for 3¼ - 3 ½ hours or until firm to the touch and a skewer inserted into the centre of the cake comes out clean. Leave to cool in the tin.
4. When the cake is completely cold, use a sharp knife to cut it into 9 smaller square cakes. Brush the sides of each cake with a little apricot jam. Divide the marzipan into 9 pieces. Dust a surface lightly with icing sugar and roll each piece out to a strip long enough to go around each cake. Wrap the strips around the cakes pinching the ends together to seal. Top each cake with a selection of cherries, nuts and apricots. Tie a ribbon around each cake if liked.
Mini Christmas CakesMakes 9, ready in 4 hours (plus cooling)
These delightful mini fruit and nut topped cakes are perfect for giving as a festive foodie present. Simply wrap in clear cellophane
and tie with gold ribbon or place in small gift boxes.

Christmas With Dickens
By Ted Bruning
Charles Dickens is often credited with inventing Christmas, or at least reinventing it and giving it its modern form.
Christmas Carol must be one of the most-filmed books ever, and the name of its central character, Scrooge, has entered the language. Yet it is one of his shorter works – a novella rather than a novel – and was only written to recoup the author’s finances after the failure of Martin Chuzzlewit.
A Christmas Carol was an instant success, and Dickens followed it up with four more Christmas novellas between 1844 and 1848 (The Cricket on the Hearth of 1845, actually outsold A Christmas Carol), with 17 short stories published in the seasonal editions of his two magazines, Household Words and All the Year Round, between 1850 and 1867.
Christmas badly needed reinventing. In the countryside, the grand old midwinter feast of medieval and earlier times had been driven underground by Puritan opposition before and during the Interregnum; and even after the Restoration it never really recovered its previous significance. And in the burgeoning industrial cities of the 18th and early 19th centuries, commerce allowed no pause for 12 days of ritual merriment. The shops didn’t even close.
A companionable man, Dickens saw this as a great social evil. The traditional Christmas festivities
had been communal events, and it was the sociable and communal side of Christmas that Dickens celebrated. Although privately he was a devout if unorthodox Christian, you will find little of the religious side of Christmas in his writings. Scrooge, frightened out of his miserly ways, does not rush out to church on Christmas morning but goes visiting. And at the heart of The Pickwick Papers is the Christmas Eve ball at Manor Farm, where Wardle hosts a blow-out of Lucullan proportions at which all comers, including the Pickwickians, are welcome.
It would be a wonderful but wholly impossible endeavour to seek to recreate that feast at Dingley Dell. For one thing the sheer quantity of alcohol consumed – hot punch, mulled ale, warmed claret, brandy and hot water for the coachman, the “something good” enjoyed by Sam Weller and the Fat Boy at the Blue Lion at Muggleton, the “hot elder wine, well-qualified with brandy and spice” - would give your GP a fit. For another, even the most rabid “political correctness gone mad” merchant would have to admit that the game enjoyed by the partygoers (after the dancing to “the only harp in all Muggleton” and the blind man’s buff) was dangerous to the point of insanity.
This was snap-dragon. The lights were extinguished, and a “ghost” in white sheet and wild wig presented a tray of raisins which had been soaked
in brandy and set alight. These the players would have to grab without burning their fingers (hence the modern expression); and “when fingers enough were burned, and all the raisins were gone, they sat down by the huge fire of blazing logs to a substantial supper and a mighty bowl of wassail in which the hot apples were hissing and bubbling”. More booze.
Perhaps, then, a truly Dickensian Christmas is too strong for modern stomachs. But one thing we might try is turning off the TV. No Queen’s Speech, The Great Escape, The Sound of Music or even A Christmas Carol. He believed in togetherness: friends, relations, neighbours, and stray Pickwickians all joining in one great joyous riot.
So, hide the remote and bring on the mighty bowl of wassail and the only harp in all Muggleton!

The Beauty Room is conveniently situated close to the station in Princes Risborough, with free parking right outside.
Fran offers a comprehensive range of beauty treatments in very comfortable surroundings – it would be almost impossible not to relax here!
Fran suggested that I should try the Genesis Skin Therapy Facial (priced at £45), which
is designed to even skin tone and firm facial contours. Coloured light therapy and ultrasound penetrates deeply into the skins core. The Genesis not only repairs skin and reduces fine lines and wrinkles, it also helps to close large pores and can be used to calm rosacea, acne and scar tissue by working with the skins natural collagen.
The facial is a very relaxing experience which produces a gentle warming during treatment that is very calming.
I experienced a mild (not at all unpleasant) tingling and my skin felt and looked firmer after only one session.
Optimum results are achieved from six to ten treatments spaced a week apart and I have already booked my next appointment!
Why not try the genesis Facial experience for your self. call Fran at the Beauty room for a free consultation on 01844-343306.

Headaches? Feeling “muzzy” or lethargic? In our second article on headaches and migraine we look specifically at cervicogenic headaches and neck pain. The term “Cervicogenic” comes from the fact that the pain experienced is due to a problem in the cervical portion of the spine (the neck). Cervicogenic headaches are caused by irritation of joints and muscles in the neck. When neck muscles spasm they can put pressure on nerves that travel to the head and radiate pain into the scalp. Joints in the top of the neck also share a nerve supply with the scalp and can cause pain referral. A whiplash injury is a common cause of this type of headache. The classical symptom of a cervicogenic headache is pain that begins in the neck and progressively moves into the head. Those with the condition often experience a lowered tolerance of pain, making management of the pain sometimes difficult. Head and neck movement, rather than offering relief, can often make the headache worse. The neck usually becomes very tender to the touch upon the onset of the headache and responds very well to Osteopathic treatment.
At The Luxton Clinic we treat many patients with headaches and we also treat different types of neck pain. Non-Specific Neck Pain Many people develop a stiff and painful neck for no obvious reason. It may happen after sleeping or sitting in a draught or perhaps after a minor twisting injury, for example while cleaning or gardening. It is the most common type of neck pain and often disappears after a few days. If it doesn’t resolve within a couple of days it is wise to have an examination and treatment before the body begins compensating with altered posture. Tension Most muscles of the body relax completely when they are not being used but some muscles have to work all the time in order to keep your body upright. Muscles at the back of your neck must always be tensed, otherwise your head would fall forwards when you are sitting or standing. When these muscles work too hard or are not strong enough, it can cause neck pain and tension headaches. People who are worried or under stress often sub-consciously tighten their muscles more than is necessary to hold their head upright. Tension headaches are very common and are often wrongly called migraines. Working at a
computer station and sitting slumped with head forward loads the neck muscles and may create tension headaches. Osteopathic Treatment After assessing the function and quality of neck and joint movement, we check the muscle and fascial tension along with its relationship to the spine and head. We apply soft tissue techniques to soften muscle tension with positional release for the fascia. We may follow this up with articulation and encourage joint release where necessary. We also use gentle Cranial Osteopathic techniques to rebalance the rhythmic function of the spine and cranium. Recommended exercises for correcting poor posture are also a part of treatment and consultation.
If you would like to make an appointment to see one of the osteopaths at The Luxton Clinic please phone 01844 352200. Our patients often report increased vitality with
improved concentration and sense of well-being after treatment.

Harden’s Guide and Michelin listed Old Plow sits in a valley in an area of outstanding natural beauty below the hilltop village of Speen and yet it’s only 20 minutes from J4 of the M40 at High Wycombe and 10 minutes from Great Missenden and Princes Risborough. This lovely 17th century building houses a country restaurant and an informal bistro. After training in Switzerland, chef patron Malcolm Cowan became sous chef of the Ritz Hotel Picccadilly, head chef of the Westbury Hotel Bond St and executive chef of Maxims de Paris, London, and in 1988 brought his expertise and West End standards of cuisine to the heart of the Chilterns.
Malcolm’s eclectic style of cuisine is reflected in his Seafood, Grill and Chophouse Menu - succulent aged beef from Creekstone Farm, Kansas, cooked on a French char-grill at 730 degrees and finished off in the oven at 500 degrees, English lamb, fresh turbot, line caught seabass, lobster in season, Cornish scallops and fresh mussels from Devon all feature heavily on his menu. Favourite dishes include a seafood platter of shellfish with home-made gravadlax and smoked salmon; Old Plow old fashioned prawn cocktail; a mixed grill of fresh fish and shellfish served oriental style; roast breast of Loomsdale duck with braised red cabbage, grilled apple and Leicestershire black pudding.
Public footpaths crisscross the valley around The Old Plow and walkers are welcome should they wish to stop off for something from the light bites section of the menu. As winter approaches, log fires will be lit and hot mulled wine will be available at the bar. For more tempting treats and information about December opening times and menus including Christmas functions please telephone or email for details.
All dishes are subject to availability.

Now the clocks have gone back, and Autumn has begun to drift into Winter - it’s the time to prepare your garden for what may well be a cold snap. The last few Winters have been very cold - last year there were a few nights when the temperature dipped down to minus 15. Believe me, that is COLD! And when the frosts are that severe, it’s not surprising that the plants in your garden can be, at the very least damaged, and in the worst case killed off.We know very well how plants can be affected by bad weather. Over the last couple of winters we have lost plants in the garden centre that you would normally expect to comfortably survive the plummeting temperature. Shrubs such as Viburnum, Laurel and even Pyracantha struggled - whilst more tender varieties such as Choisya and Pittosporum just couldn’t cope. One can perform some surgery with secateurs once the Spring weather has arrived, cutting away the damaged foliage to encourage new growth, but more often than not the shrub will never really return to its best. The best way to help your plants out during the winter is prevention rather than cure. If you grow your plants in containers, move them up against a wall. The wall will
retain heat even during the coldest of nights - and be 3 or 4 degrees warmer than the open garden. A tip to help with containers is to make sure the drainage holes are free from debris and can drain freely. Then lift them up from the ground by using pot feet. This will ensure the air can move freely around the container and prevent it completely freezing then expanding. That is how pots split and crack. If the pots are so big they can’t be moved, or if you are concerned about a tender shrub in open ground - use Bubblewrap or Horticultural Fleece to protect the plants. Shrubs such as Cordylines, Phormiums and Tree Ferns really do need some help to make it through the Winter, so keep an eye on the weather forecast and wrap them up if we’re due some cold nights.Your shrubs, herbaceous plants and roses out in your beds should all make it through the winter without too much damage, but to ensure they get a little help now is the time to provide them with a mulch.
A dressing of Mix & Mulch, Chipped Bark or compost will give your plants a warming blanket to keep the worst of the weather away from the root systems. It’s not only the frosts than can damage your plants. The winter winds can rock your shrubs and trees about in the soil, harming the roots - so have a good look at the bigger plants in open ground and think about giving them a prune. Shrubs such as Lavatera and Buddleia grow at a rapid rate throughout the summer, so you can confidently trim them down by a third now - leaving the harder pruning to late March.
When you visit us during the winter months you’ll notice the builders are in! They’re here putting up our cafe and farmshop that will be opening at Easter. More news about that next time.
Happy Gardening and a very Happy Christmas from
Simon, Alison, Edith the Jack Russelland all at Askett Nurseries.
