Father’s Day is approaching. Again, no need to wait for just that one special day to express

to your Father or Father figure, how very important they are to you. Try something just from your heart, like a poem or a card made from scratch. I know those are things that children do a lot, however, it still works as a grown up child. :)

What Makes a Dad?

God took the strength of a mountain, The majesty of a tree,The warmth of a summer sun, The calm of a quiet sea,The generous soul of nature, The comforting arm of night,The wisdom of the ages, The power of the eagle’s flight,The joy of a morning in spring, The faith of a mustard seed,The patience of eternity, The depth of a family need,

Then God combined these qualities,When there was nothing more to add,He knew His masterpiece was complete, And so,

He called it … Dad

All residents remember to send in your photos, stories, news, happenings, social events, charities, scout news, school news and more. Palms Magazine is all about YOU! The Cover Photo on test is going strong and we are receiving a lot of pictures. Sure makes it fun to see and place all the pictures in the newsletter and you could win a $25 gift card. For the Hidden Picture Contest this month, let’s do something fun for Dads. Look for a small baseball.  We hid it well in one of the ads, however if you find it and your name is picked, you will win a $25 gift card to a local restaurant. Send in photos and hidden picture entries to [email protected].

Karate Classes

The Pro Karate Center was established to promote good mental health, physical fitness, and self defense through the Okinawan style of karate, Isshinryu. Isshinryu’s main objective is the perfection of oneself through both physical and mental

development. As students learn the art of self defense they acquire self-confidence, humility, and the ability to concentrate. Isshinryu Karate combines a well-rounded exercise program with important advantages over other styles.

At Pro Karate Center we understand the problems unique to youngsters, and concerns parents naturally have. This well organized, professionally planned children’s Isshinryu program is designed to help parents in the task of building a child’s self confidence, self discipline, positive outlook, and self esteem. They learn to take pride in themselves and their accomplishments.

The Pro Karate Center offers a satellite program of classes right here at Tampa Palms Golf and Country Club. We feel our programs are the best the area has to offer featuring well– organized classes for children, teens, and adults.

Fitness Tip Tips from the TrainerJoanna van der Laan

Negatives Negatives are a good thing - When a muscle shortens during an exercise, it is called the concentric or positive phase of contraction. When it lengthens, it is called the eccentric or negative phase. Research shows that the muscle can be up to 40% stronger in this negative phase. Capitalize on this fact for a more effective workout. For example, raise the lower arm in a bicep curl on a count of 1-2-3. Then lower the weight in a slower count of 1-2-3-4-5.

Weight Training at the Gym: Are you committed to making the daily trek to your local fitness center?

Weight Training at the Gym has its advantages and we wanted to provide you some of the benefits and challenges of resistance training at your workout center. Weight Training SafetyWorking out with heavy free weights can be a dangerous thing, when you do not use a spotter to help assist you with heavy weighted lifts. In a gym environment, there is always someone around to support your heavy lifting programs, whether it’s staff or a another member. You can also get some support and advice from the staff while resistance training to ensure you are using proper form and technique with all your weight training exercises. Gym MotivationWith all the distractions that we face at home, weight training at the gym can help keep you motivated and focused on your personal

fitness goals. Getting away to a gym helps eliminate many of the day to day challenges that you might face while trying to workout at your home gym. Watching other people train can also help you stay stimulated and motivated to stay with your resistance training program. Meet a New Training PartnerA local gym or fitness center is an outstanding place to meet and interact with new people. If your social life needs a boost, then joining a gym might just provide you an opportunity to make new friends while you are trying to reach your fitness and health goals. Choices of EquipmentJust like a home gym provides you lots of flexibility in its own way, weight training at the gym, offers most people a wider selection of machines or exercise equipment than you could afford or accommodate in your own home. If you get bored easily or tired of the same type of fitness training routines, then having more choices and fitness equipment options provides you new motivation for working out. Personal Fitness AdviceA lot of fitness centers offer introductory fitness programs to help you start with a basic weight training program to get familiar with the equipment. While you are working out you should also be able to get personal advice .

AquaticsSwimming: The Best Cross Training

Swimming is well-known as a great low impact total body workout, which makes it a great cross training option. If you’re looking to get in a great workout on a rest day, work opposing muscles or rehab an injury, look no further than swimming.Continued on page 10

1) In the pool, cross training isn’t a slack day. Some athletes roll their eyes when you suggest cross training. To them, a day off from their sport is a wasted day, a day when they have to do half –effort, low impact exercise. Swimming will clean up cross training’s reputation. If you spend your easy/cross training days swimming, you can get in a tough, quality workout without compromising your rest. Because swimming is low impact and challenges different muscle groups, you can swim hard without risking injury or fatigue.

2) No Impact. One of the great qualities of swimming is that there is no impact on your body. No knee-jarring running or hip-grinding cycling. Most aerobic exercise involves some sort of impact, but swimming will give your body a much needed break from the pounding. Don’t let this make you think impact is inherently bad. In fact, impact exercise strengthens bones and can increase bone density. Don’t swear off impact training all together; just mix it up with some low-impact time in the pool.

3) Total Body Workout. Swimming involves your arms, legs, back, and core. A workout that comprehensive is tough to come by. Athletes often spend most of their time fine-tuning the muscles they use most, like runners who spend most of their time strengthening their legs. The down side of this concept is that when you’re competing or otherwise pushing your body, it’s important to be strong from head to toe. Even though runners need strong legs, it’s also important that their arms, back and core are strong to help get them over the finish line as quickly as possible.

4) A New Test for Your Lungs. Need to increase lung capacity? The pool is a great place to do it. After all, your face will be underwater for most of your work out. This can train your body to take quality breaths and increase your breathing economy which will help you with your dry land efforts as well. You’ll

find your lungs using oxygen more efficiently because of your time in the pool.

5) Injured? Hop in the Pool. Injured athletes who are feeling restless or need rehab before getting back to their normal exercise routine will find refuge in the pool. Swimming is good for injured athletes for the same reasons it is great for cross training. Swimming provides low impact resistance training, which is a valuable tool for rehabbing athletes.

Whether you are looking for a total body workout, cross training for your off days, or just another exciting form of exercising, you need to give swimming a try. Plus, who would say no to a refreshing dip on a hot summer’s day?

Tennis Tip of the Month

Change of Pace

Throw in a moonball for a change of pace. Serve, volley, forehand, backhand, overhead and lob are all the basic strokes in tennis. You definitely need all of these in

your arsenal PLUS one more. The Moonball. The moonball is used to keep your opponent behind the baseline and to also change the pace.

A VERY effective shot!!

- Thomas Judson Head Tennis Professional.

If you can putt, you can play. Anyone who has played golf over time has probably heard that adage and painfully learned its truth as they three- or four-putted a green. Putting is often the last thing that golfers work on, yet it accounts for more than 50% of the par strokes in 18 holes. Improving one’s putting makes good sense.

Putting begins with the grip. Holding a putter is different from holding an iron or wood, where an interlocking grip is utilized. Most golfers don’t pay enough attention to how they grip the club, but the best golfers understand what Ben Hogan said, “Good golf begins with a good grip.” A good putting grip keeps the wrists still, yet it isn’t stiff. The grip is the transfer point for body energy to the club. Tension and stress will flow into the stroke if the grip is tense and stiff, so loosen up. The only wrong way to grip the club is to seize it like grim death.

After finding a comfortable grip that immobilizes the wrists, the next thing to consider for improving one’s putting is to concentrate on the stroke. The putting stroke involves a gentle, controlled rocking motion of the shoulders.

Remember that in putting, the club head moves forward while everything else should simply rock through the motion of the stroke. This means that hands, head, elbows, and grip move together as one to stroke the putter head forward. The golfer should swing the putter in a pendulum motion backward and forward smoothly. The good putter strikes the ball with the club head square to the target and follows through. Some

pros recommend practicing with a coin behind the ball to focus on throughout the stroke to keep the head still.

Once a grip and stroke are perfected, it is time to putt. To do so requires the ability to read the green. One key recommendation when playing a course is to get there early and practice putting on the practice green before the game. The practice greens can reveal a lot about the greens on the course including: the speed that the ball will roll, the types of contours to be encountered, length of the grass, etc. When reading a green, try to see the contours - in other words, the high and low points.

Find the lowest point on the green which is where the ball will roll toward. Figure out where the lowest part is in relation to the hole and your ball. The speed required for a putt is also influenced by the grain of the grass. The grain is like the hair on a dog’s back and rubbing the wrong way creates friction; putting against the grain slows a ball down. Grain is sometimes hard to see, but remember that grass grows toward water and sometimes grain can be seen by looking for a dull color (looking against the grain) or shiny color (looking with the grain).

Once a golfer has developed a good grip, a competent stroke, and understands how to read the greens, there one more thing that must be done—PRACTICE. Great golfers agree that practice is the most important factor in learning to putt well. As Jack Nicolas said, “Mechanics are open to change, with practice being the true key to putting.”

AsK thE EXPErts

This is probably the most asked question in the housing

industry. Everyone listens to the news or reads articles on the internet regarding the state of the market. But all real estate is local. What matters are inventory levels of available housing and the local job market.

The number of homes available for purchase within our area has been trending down for the past year. That inventory has three components, pre-foreclosure short sales, non- distressed and bank owned. Non-distressed is made up of regular properties sold by individuals and new homes from

various builders. Bank owned are homes that have gone all the way through the foreclosure process.

Available homes within all three categories is down. If a home is priced right and ready to move into, the seller may receive multiple offers. This is especially

true of properties that are priced $300,000. or less.

Interest rates are “crazy low” right now. The average 30-year rate is around 4%. If you have great credit the rate can be as low as 3.5%. Couple that with low home prices, shrinking inventory, lower unemployment and you have the beginnings of a bottom.

Prom season is underway throughout the United States, and inside the walls of St. Jo-

seph’s Children’s Hospital. Nearly 100 current and former pediatric patients dressed up in fancy gowns and hand-some tuxedo jackets, many donated by hospital employees, and took part in their own prom night held at the hospital on May 11th. Like all proms, the special evening included a mix of music, dancing, refreshments, keepsake photos and memories that are sure to last a lifetime. Children with chronic or life-threat-ening conditions sometimes miss or have to delay traditional childhood rituals, such as playing a team sport, slumber parties, learning to drive and participating in high school dances. Child Life Specialists at St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital organize special events, like prom, in an effort to provide patients with experiences that they might not otherwise have due to treatment and hospitalization. Eighteen-year-old Daniel Myers is one of those patients. Born with hy-poplastic left heart syndrome, Daniel has undergone six heart surgeries in his lifetime and was in the hospital during his own high school prom last year. He was thrilled at the opportu-

nity to attend prom, and spent most of the evening on the dance floor. And because no child should have to miss prom because of an illness or injury, St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital did not limit the prom to just high school patients.

“For some seriously ill pediatric patients, attending this prom may have been a once in a lifetime opportunity,” said Leah Frohnerath, child life supervisor at St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital. “We think it’s a night that every child should have, no matter how sick, which is why we gave all of our patients a chance to go to prom now.”

St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital Encourages Parents toPrevent & Prepare for a Blaze

Does your family have an escape plan in case of a fire? If not, you should.

According to Safe Kids USA, approximately 460 children ages 14 and under die each year in the United States in residential fires. In 2010, house fires claimed the lives of 132 people in Florida (10 from Hillsborough County) and injured an additional 3,665 people (206 from Hillsborough County).

Fires can start easily, spread rapidly and intensify quickly. In less than 30 seconds, a small flame can turn into a major fire. In just minutes, a house can fill with thick black smoke and become engulfed in flames. Rebecca Kynes, an injury prevention expert at St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital reminds parents that no matter how or where a fire starts, installing a smoke alarm is the first step toward keeping your family safe.“Smoke alarms are one of the best safety devices you can use to protect your family and your home from fire,” said Kynes. “Installing a smoke alarm on every level of your house and outside of each sleeping area reduces the chance of dying in a fire by nearly half. Be sure to test smoke alarms every month and replace batteries once a year.”

St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital is currently distributing free smoke detectors for families in the Tampa area. For more information, contact the Safety Store at(813) 554-8510.According to Kynes, teaching

children about the dangers of fire and how to escape can help prevent tragedy during a household fire. “There are time-tested ways to prevent and survive a fire,” said Kynes. “It’s not a question of luck. It’s a matter of preparation.” St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital recommends the following tips for parents and caregivers on how to prepare children in case of a residential fire.

PLAN & PRACTICE:

• Identify two escape routes out of each room of the house. • Assign an adult to each child, regardless of age. This is especially vital for infants or children with special health care needs or mobility problems, and teens who can easily sleep through an alarm. • Practice fire drills at least twice a year. “Run through the exercise so the kids learn to leave quickly and not react by hiding in a closet or under the bed,” said Kynes.

• Designate an outside meeting place so all members of the family can be accounted for quickly. TEACH SAFETy:

• Children should know the sound of the smoke alarm. When they hear it, teach them to get outside quickly and crawl low if there is smoke. • Touch doors with the back of your hand before opening them. If the door is hot, use an alternative exit. • Teach children never to go back into a burning building for anything, such as a toy or pet. • Be sure every family member knows how to “stop, drop and roll.” • Teach children to never touch or play with matches, lighters, candles or gasoline. • Be sure to set a good example. Never smoke in bed or disconnect smoke alarm batteries.

For more information on how to prevent a fire-related tragedy in your home, please visit www.stjosephschildrens.com or contact the Safety Store at (813) 554-8510. v

With the upcoming potluck on June 7th the Tampa Palms

Womens Club is looking back on a great Spring of fundraising. At their luncheon they will have their charities as guests as well as the scholarship recipient from USF. They will receive TPWC hard earned money in the shape of checks.

This was all earned through the dedication of our members at our wonderful community yard and bake sale in March, the fashion show at Tampa Palms Golf and Country Club in April, and donations to our scholarship funds by members of our club. All of our members

volunteer in one way or another; like directly setting things up for the club or reaching out to the schools and other charities.

In keeping abreast of new ways to communicate in our ever global world, they received, during our May meeting, a technology session from NEW TAMPA Best Buy employees.

This is a great gesture from Best Buy, to send out a ‘squad’ and inform the ladies on laptop computers and their applications, the smart phone and the ipad/tablet computer.

We were surprised to hear our local New Tampa Best Buy has a Community Relations Team, which is headed by the young man named Landon. They are focusing on teens. They provide for scholarships and grants, and have a strong program for elcetronics recycling.

However , with our luncheon, we will set our phones on silent, our iPad tucked away and the laptop left at home to spend real face time with the other members and our charity and scholar ship recipients, and to enjoy the wonderful dishes all the women bring in. v

Freedom High School

17410 Commerce Park Blvd, tampa, FL 33647, 558-1185

youth LINKS AfghanistanFreedom High School is one of six schools nationwide chosen for the year-long program sponsored by the US Embassy in Afghanistan through Global Nomads Group’s Youth LINKS program. Once a month, a group of 10 girls from Freedom video conference with a group of high school girls in Kabul, Afghanistan. Each session has a specific agenda that we work with. It ranges from many different topics.

Some are what life is like for each respective student, what their goals are in life, what are the current events taking place where we live, to breaking many cutural stereotypes. This is truly the classroom of the future and these fortunate students are learning things that can not be taught in a traditional classroom.

The girls recently had a video conference in which the parents of the students on both ends had an opportunity to “chat” with the parents from the other country. This experience has been life changing and living in a globally connected world makes it imparative that our future leaders have these kinds of opportunities to embrace different cultures and ethnicities! The students will meet a total of 6 times this school year using video conferencing. Both sets of students are working on final projects together. The Afghan students are looking at a woman’s education in their country and the Freedom High students are focusing on diversity among their peers.

Cafe FreedomCafe Freedom, a student organization dedicated to mobilizing youth to engage in community-wide improvements, was founded at Freedom High School in 2009. The club instituted a literacy program in collaboration with Title I elementary schools in Hillsborough County and began working on international initiatives, such as raising funds to support rebuilding efforts in Haiti.

This year we included three more high schools in our plan to encourage literacy in elementary classrooms and were able to give books to over 1400 2nd graders. In addition to the books, 2nd grade students were invited to participate in a Reading Festival to celebrate Dr. Seuss’ birthday with activities, cupcakes, and prizes.

At our 2nd Annual April Pools Day event. We had well over a hundred children and families attend from over a dozen elementary schools in the area. Additionally members of Cafe Freedom mobilized students from 5 different high schools to volunteer at the event today.

The event was covered by a news crew from BayNews 9, and Brooke Bennett, Olympic Gold Medalist, joined in the festivities. Some special features of this year’s festival included demonstrations of Survival Infant Swimming, Stroke Technique by TBAY Aquatics Swim Team, an iPad 911 simulation station, arts and crafts related to pool safety, a literacy station, and cake and sandwiches. Parents who joined their children commented that this was an amazing opportunity for their children to learn about pool safety.

2012 Graduation Principal David Sheppard will say goodbye to a 2012 graduating class of an anticipated 485 students on June 5th at 4:30 p.m. The commencement ceremony takes place at the Florida State Fairgrounds Expo Hall.

Tampa Palms Elementary Creates a New Learning/Healing Garden A team of staff, students and parents from Tampa Palms Elementary and employees from Home Depot worked together to beautify a school learning garden funded by a generous donation of time and materials from the New Tampa Home Depot.

Home Depot came to the rescue for a classroom of students with Autism Spectrum Disorders. The students have been working hard trying to care for their school garden, but the garden was in desperate need of materials and plants. On May 9th, Home Depot and the Tampa Palms community built planters, trellises, benches and planted butterfly attracting plants to bring the garden to “life” for the students.

With Home Depot’s help, the new, beautiful, outdoor classroom will provide the students a perfect place to learn, play and strengthen their body and mind. The garden will also provide the students with a place for fun and meaningful learning experiences.

Michele Paschal directs the garden project.
