Coach’s Cornerby Todd Timmons, Tampa Palms TBAY Head Coach

We are entering our third month of New Year’s resolutions and there are no doubt opportunities presenting themselves for us to cheat our own goals. For my athletes, they are presented everyday with ways to cheat their goals. The methods for which they might cheat the system often times are different than those either their parents or myself might choose. For example, it is with reasonable certainty that the statement can

be made, “most kids have cheated in school at some point in their academic career.” This type of cheating holds huge risks, the greatest of which being expulsion. Young athletes are also presented with the opportunity every day at practice to cheat the system. In this case I am referring to the objective of every swim set. Swim practices are made up of at least two sets and as many at 10 some times. Each set is designed with a different objective in mind. Meet each set’s objective to the best of your ability while pushing your comfort zone each time and the swimmer will improve over time. Often times, this is not the case. swimmers will pick and choose what sets they want to work and sometime even what portions within a set they want to work. This is cheating the set. Cheating the set/system, be it in your personal goals for life advancement and savings, academics, or in the pool, has never resulted in a champion. Rather at the end of the term or season of training the sacrifices we choose to make during crunch time will the be the ones that prove the most fruitful in the end and there is nothing like seeing one’s own goals actualized.

Upcoming EventsTriathlon Clinic with Olympic Triathlete!

2008 Olympic Triathlete Jarrod Shoemaker and 6th world ranked wife Alicia Kaye to host Tri-Clinic at Tampa Palms Friday March 16th and Saturday March 17th. Please contact Head Swim Coach Todd Timmons 813-632-1676 for more information.

Tampa Palms TBAY Swim TeamThe Tampa Palms TBAY team swims year round in conjunction with USA Swimming and the Tampa Swim League spring season. Our swim team is made up of

children ages 4 and up. Practice includes stretching and warm-up, developmental stroke training and drills, and a cool-down. Swimmers will be divided into smaller groups so children at the beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels will all receive the proper training. For additional information on Swim Lessons or Swim Team please contact Head Coach Todd Timmons at 632-1676 for more information.

Swim Lessons

It is very important that your child know how to swim before the summer comes! Swim lessons are currently being offered for the beginner, refresher lessons, and advanced level lessons for the more experienced swimmer. All lessons are thirty minutes in length and are scheduled on an individual or small group basis. We hope to see you at the pool!

Infant Swimming Resource - ISRAn added measure of safety and a foundation for a lifelong enjoyment of the water...

The goal for the lesson for Infants between 6 to 12 months of age is to assume a back float position from any angle of safe presentation into the water. The goal for lessons for a baby over 12 months of age is to swim face down, roll onto the back to float, rest and breathe, then rotate back over to continue swimming to the wall.

Each lesson is by appointment and for 10 minutes each day, Monday through Friday.

Last season 5 of our 8 teams made it to the playoffs! The first team match will begin on Sunday March 4th. It’s a 6 week long season with playoffs scheduled for May 6th.

Go Tampa Palms!

Continued from page 8

For all of you playing on USTA teams, I’m sure that you’re aware that your 3rd set is now going to be determined by a tie- breaker instead of playing out a full 3rd set. Most of us are not in favor of this, but, “it is what it is,” and we have to make the best of it.

My advice for all teams is to make the most of your practice sessions by PLAYING TIE-BREAKERS! Practice them a lot! The more

you play them, and the more you familiarize yourself with them, the more confidence you will have when you play them. This will give you a huge psychological advantage as well. Winning a tie-breaker can at times not only determine if you win your match, but, it can result in your TEAM winning it’s entire match! It’s BIG! So...practice, practice, practice playing tie-breakers, and positive results will follow!

GoLF TIP OF THE MOnTHFrom Golf Head Pro Jeff Anderson PGA

TEnn S tip of the Month

A bunker shot is the only shot in golf where we don’t

actually hit the golf ball. To improve your bunker play, use this practice drill. • Draw two parallel lines in the sand approximately 4 inches apart that are 3 to 4 feet long and run perpendicular to your target line.

• Align your body left of your target line, placing your lead foot even with the line closest to the target.

• Next, open your clubface so it is aiming at the target.

• This increases the loft and allows the bounce of the club to work.

• Now make 3/4-length swings, having the club enter the sand at the back line and taking the sand out between the lines.

• The swings should follow your bodyline, not your target line.

• When you have become proficient at making the club enter and exit the sand between the lines, again redraw the lines and placing balls between them.

• Making the same swings, the golf balls should come out of the sand high and land softly on the putting green.

Summer is right around the corner, and chances are, you’re considering swimming

lessons for your children. Well look no further, it’s right next door at a community pool near you! Whether you live in Tampa, New Tampa, or Wesley Chapel, SwimKids USA has 4 New Tampa locations; Seven Oaks, Meadow Pointe, Lexington Oaks,

and Lake Bernadette. For year round swimming, their indoor heated facil-ity is located in north Tampa. For over 18 years, SwimKids USA’s Swim School is still the swim school of choice for parents. Why? “Because at SwimKids USA, you get results!” says Alan Messing, founder and owner of SwimKids USA. Since opening their first school in 1994,

thousands of New Tampa children have graduated from the school. “What separates us from many other providers is that parents don’t want a monthly recurring swim lesson bill to add to their expenses. There is a big push in the swim lesson industry today to operate that way to keep the cash coming in.

Although it benefits the school, it’s a detriment to the child. Not to men-tion a burden for families, who are just struggling to pay their mortgage, and yet still provide an enjoy-able activity for their kids that will keep them safe around the water,” continues Alan. “At SwimKids USA, we teach the kids to swim and be safe, and once we have done that, the parents can move on to other things.” Safety is SwimKids USA’s number

one priority, and rightfully so when you consider this fact: drowning is the number one killer of children under 5 in the state of Florida. And with that fact, it’s no wonder why parents choose SwimKids USA. One only has to view the movie clips on the SwimKids USA website to see the results. There you can see 1 year old students swimming! Whether it is In-fant classes, survival classes or stroke technique for your aspiring competi-tive swimmer, there is a SwimKids USA class designed just for you. So register today! SwimKids USA’s classes fill up quickly. Typically classes are full by April. For more infor-mation, simply call Alan today at 813-991-6258, or go to their website swimkidsusa.com. v

It drives me crazy. And it happens all the time.

“Oh, so you do karate then.”

“No, it’s called Tõ Shin Dõ.”

“Oh, so it’s Tae Kwon Do.”

“No, it’s (Toh Shin Doh) strictly realis-tic and sensible self-defense.”

“Oh, so its MMA then, mixed martial arts like on TV.”

“No, it’s actually nothing like that. MMA is contest based - nothing like real self-defense where there are no rules - and relies mostly on being bigger, stronger and faster; in other words being the superior athlete. Tõ Shin Dõ is based on natural body movement using the musculoskeletal system against itself, making the attacker their own worst enemy. The focus is on bringing a dangerous and

threatening situation to an immedi-ate end with a minimum effort and a maximum result approach.”

Ultimately what sets Tõ Shin Dõ apart from other martial arts is the fo-cus on preventing difficult situations in life through an extensive program of personal development and life management. The strategy that drives the Tõ Shin Dõ programs is one of making yourself less vulnerable by continuing along a path of develop-ment which increases your sense of personal power - your ability to con-trol situations calmly, communicate powerfully and effectively or to avoid overreacting to stressful situations, for example.

A key to this powerful program is short meditations and life skills sessions held at the end of almost every class. Life skills training can

take the form of a guided visualiza-tion, a personal reflection session or a short discussion exercise with a classmate. A recent life skills exercise involved reflection on your first waking moments of the day. We all slip into habits of semi-conscious or subconsciously driven self-talk that is destructive in nature. Master Russo speaks of the domino effect, “Every morning you condition your mind to set the dominos up so they fall one way or the other, a chain reaction of positive or negative experiences. If we are not careful we can turn our lives

into a living hell, hoping for someone or something to rescue us, or at least occasionally come along and provide temporary relief.” The Tõ Shin Dõ student body is over 80% adults because training goes way beyond the narrow confines of physi-cal combat.

Guardian ad Litem Offers a Voice to Children in Need

i had never heard of volunteer Guardians ad Litem (GALs) until I was introduced to the program

by a neighbor. Once he described what GALs do I knew that I had found the volunteer work that I had long sought. I called the program, went through the screening process and training and in September 2003 became a Guardian ad Litem.

The work is often difficult and frustrating but the victories are sweet because they benefit a child who has no other voice in the system. To help a child who has suffered neglect, abuse or abandonment, to a place where their lives will be happier, safer and more loving is so fulfilling. All the hours of work, the ups and downs of the case, fall by the wayside when this child goes to a safe home. A smile, or a hug from one of these children is all the recompense one needs.

Sometimes it takes a while for the child to open up to you. These children are needy for they have had so much hardship and disappointment in their lives. You can be a stable, reliable presence for them and usually they come to realize this. You can take their desires and wishes to the judge. You are their voice, they have no other.

As a Guardian ad Litem you will:

• Help ensure that a child is in a safe environment where they are able to thrive until permanency has been achieved.

• Be a mentor for child who desperately needs a confidant to help them cope with the upheaval in their lives.

• Be the only consistent person in a child’s life. Case managers come and go as do birth and foster parents.

• Face challenges. The system moves at a painfully slow pace that is very frustrating when a child is waiting for the stability they deserve. When a child’s face lights up, and they run to greet you and hold your hand, any adversity tends to quickly dissolve.

Everyday I look at the pictures of the numerous children that I have advocated for over the years and I know that they have made as big a difference in my life as I have in theirs.

Neighbors, You will not be alone – we have a whole office of superb and wonderful people to assist you. There is a child out there whose voice needs to be heard – will YOU be the one to LISTEN? v

fCAT ScoresTampa Palms Elementary ranked among the top 100 in its group statewide when it came to this year’s FCAT scores, according to the Florida Department of Education’s School Ranking website. FCAT scores at Tampa Palms Elementary earned a ranking of 79 against other schools in its category. Floridians use school grades to help assess the quality of their local schools. The school rankings are part of the

Department of Education’s ongoing effort to provide clear measures and metrics to help parents of school-age children, educators and taxpayers in Florida evaluate their local schools. Schools are ranked according to the number of school grade points they received for the 2010-11 school year. For elementary schools these points are derived from FCAT scores. Schools are awarded one point for each percent of students in the school who were enrolled for the full year who score on grade level or higher on the FCAT and make annual learning gains (800 possible points).

Thank You Volunteers at Tampa Palms Elementary

A special “shout out” to our Volunteers in Learning (VIL) crew. Your efforts on a weekly basis makes a huge difference! If you are interested in the Volunteers in Learning Program please see me or drop me an email. We always have children needing “that special touch of TLC”.

Conference nightOur Spring Conference Night will be on Thursday, March 1st from 3:30-8:30 pm. Please feel free to schedule a conference with your child’s teacher on March 1st. Parent/Teacher communication is a critical aspect of your child’s success in school.

Conference Tips

Whether your child is doing well in school or struggling, a conference is an important way to touch base with his/her teacher. Here’s how to make the most of your meeting:

1. Write down questions for the teacher ahead of time. To come up with your list, think about each subject (“Is Kimberly reading at grade level?”) as well as social skills and behavior (“Is she making friends?”).

2. Carry a pen and notepad to take notes during the conference. Write down information to share with your child (“The teacher said you help other students during group work”) and ideas for helping at home (“Board games can teach Math facts!).

3. Be on time-the teacher will be meeting with many parents, and conferences are usually scheduled back-to-back. Also, consider swapping babysitting with another parent so that you can attend without your children.

Safety PatrolsCongratulations to the following fifth grade students who will serve as Safety Patrols for the third grading period and fourth grading periods: Alexandria Tapia, Sai Manthena, Adam Pernas, Jennie Mullen, Leshawn Hadley, Nicole Bogdanoff,

Dejah Allen, Dequavivus Redfield, and Bethany Green. The following students are the officers of the Safety Patrol Crew for the second semester of school: Captain-Emma Paschal, Lieutenant –Cade Boholst, Sergeant –Vanessa Valdes, and Sergeant-Kaden Weissman. As always, thank you so much for your support. Please contact me if I can help you in any way. With Tampa Palms Pride,Kimberly KeenanPrincipal
