This month’s cover photo contest winner: Kate Boupha

Dear Tampa Palms residents,

The winner of July’s issue Hidden Picture Contest is Neyiesha Curtis. The winner of the cover contest for the August issue is Kate Boupha. Neyiesha and Kate have won 2 tickets, each, to MOSI. Please send in your photos and hidden picture entries to [email protected].

School will soon be back in session and all that summer fun with our children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews will fade back into the background till next summer. It is so much fun to be with them during this time and so much fun to see them off again to experience new adventures and take a bit of a break ourselves. Send us any great summer pictures you may have taken. The fourth of July was a pretty big event for most, this year and luckily the rain stopped just in time to enjoy fireworks.

For August make sure to mark these IMPORTANT dates on your calendar. August 1st:  Respect Parent’s Day (should this not be 365 days?), August 3rd:  International Forgiveness Day, August 4th:  Taxpayers Appreciation Day (still waiting for my gift from last year), August 6th:  National Fresh Breath Day, August 8th: Admit You’re Happy Day and cannot leave out Aspirin’s birthday, which is August 10th (thank you!). Enjoy all holidays and celebrate life everyday!

We are excited to announce that Tampa Palms Golf & Country Club

hotel just got a fresh new look!

Well we are in the heat of the summer and things are continuing to heat up in our membership program to drive our golf Membership to 470. If we can achieve that goal we will kick in our club reinvention plans to include:

The completion of the course cart path reconstruction and the enhancement of the on-course amenities. To date we have spent more than $170,000 on repaving 7 paths and the driving range area.  This project will allow us to pave the remaining 11 holes as well as the service road and facilities maintenance area.  I have heard from many members that the quality of the paths has been a major detractor from our property.  With your help we can correct the problem and raise our golf experience to a new level.  In addition, we will also upgrade the course restrooms and tee box area amenities.

Lobby and Club Dining “Reinvention.”  This would include: (1) an entrance and lobby facelift, with new furniture and carpeting; (2) expanding and enlarging the lakeview Grill to add a large casual seating “anytime” lounge area; (3) improving the look and layout of the bar with a new design, refrigeration, bar top and barstools, new tables and chairs including high top cocktail seating and community tables, new carpeting; and (4) exterior furniture.

In addition August also brings our Charity Classic Golf Tournament on August 19th.  This event raises funds to support Auggies Quest and the MDA, The Employee Partner Care Foundation and our local charity of choice The New Tampa Morning Rotary Club.  Please mark you calendar and plan to attend.  At just $45 per player including a grill out  and silent auction it is sure to be an incredible day.

Karate Classes

The Pro Karate Center was established to promote good mental health, physical fitness, and self defense through the Okinawan style of karate, Isshinryu.

Isshinryu’s main objective is the perfection of oneself through both physical and mental development. As students learn the art of self defense they acquire self-confidence, humility, and the ability to concentrate. Isshinryu Karate combines a well-rounded exercise program with important advantages over other styles.

At Pro Karate Center we understand the problems unique to youngsters, and concerns parents naturally have. This well organized,

professionally planned children’s

Isshinryu program is designed to help parents in the task of building a child’s self confidence, self discipline, positive outlook, and self esteem. They learn to take pride in themselves and their accomplishments.

The Pro Karate Center offers a satellite program of classes right here at Tampa Palms Golf and Country Club. We feel our programs are the best the area has to offer featuring well– organized classes for children, teens, and adults.

Without addressing all the areas of fitness, results are normally minimal with short-term effects.

Exercise for Weight LossObesity is now being called an epidemic in the health community. In fact, it will soon be the leading cause of preventable death in the united States, even ahead of cigarette smoking. Obesity leads to type two diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease or stroke and even an increased risk of cancer. With all of these health risks, as well as the general improvement in the quality of life that can occur, losing weight is one of the best things that you can do for yourself. No matter what we would like to believe, there simply isn’t a magic solution to losing weight. The body will shed excess fat when it needs more calories to function through the demands you place on it in a given day than the amount of calories that you feed it. It’s that simple. So, in order to lose weight, you need to decrease the number of calories that you eat as well as increase the amount that you burn. There is a wide range of options to choose from when looking for a weight loss program. All of them often spend a lot of time explaining what to eat, in what amounts and even at what times or in what combinations. But few of them emphasize the importance of exercise – not just for losing weight, but for your general health and wellbeing. Exercise is vital when trying to lose weight for several reasons:

• First, as you start to eat less, your metabolism will slow down somewhat. Exercising helps to elevate your metabolism back to an efficient level.• Second, as mentioned, exercise burns more calories so that you can lose weight faster and stay motivated in your efforts.• Third, exercise actually releases endorphins, chemicals that keep your mood elevated. Exercise doesn’t have to mean spending hours at the gym or straining through exhausting workouts. In fact, in order for you to stick with it on the long run, exercising should be something that you enjoy. Start by increasing your activity level in an overall way. Take the stairs when you can. Park further from the mall door when you go shopping. Go for a walk in the park or through a neighborhood you love and bring a dog or a friend along for company. Take dance or martial arts lessons. Once you become more active in general, you’ll find it easier and more natural to move into regular exercise. Which you’ll need to do eventually in order to get regular, noticeable health benefits. You need to raise your heart rate to a fat burning level and keep it there for at least 20 minutes, 3 times or more a week.

If you have physical limitations that would keep you off from exercising, you can still find a way to increase your activity level. Water aerobics is a wonderful option for those who have joint problems or limited mobility because it relieves the pressure on your body that your weight provides. But you still get the resistance to challenge your muscles from the water. Whatever kind of exercise you choose, it’s important to stay motivated and keep it fun. Try gathering a group together to make it a social event. Or get a pedometer, a device that tracks how far you walk, and see how Continued on page 10

many miles you can walk a week. Make a competition amongst your friends or family members and treat the winner with something special (not food related!). Make the experience of exercising something that you look forward to, and it will soon become a regular part of your healthier lifestyle.

Tennis Tip of the monthBy Thomas Judson, Head Tennis Professional Weight and BalanceOne of the keys for a good tennis stroke is balance.  If you’re not in

Continued from page 8 balance you will put a lot of focus on your upper body, especially the arms, doing all the work and control will suffer.

Keeping your weight forwards is actually the tennis tip of the day.  Many beginner and intermediate players have a tendency to keep the weight on the back foot and that is why their shots go long or get dumped in the net. The key is to keep your weight on your front foot

and almost be leaning into the court.  This way you will use your weight better in the shots, achieve better balance, and play a technically better stroke. Good luck!

sharper on the course this season

the rebounding economy has put some sizzle back into the golf industry. At this year’s PGA Merchandise show, manufacturers large and small were touting the latest equipment, apparel and accessories. Get them first to impress your foursome mates!

The Eyes Have It. If you have ever teed-off before sunrise or hustled down the 18th fairway before sunset, with your sunglasses on top of your head, NEOX® Transitions® SOlFX™ lenses are for you! Transitions, the manufacturer of this line of photochromatic lenses has just introduced a golf-specific line. These lenses self-adjust to changing light conditions. The NEOX technology sharpens depth perception, which translates into the ability to see the ball and read the greens at all times of the day.

You will not have to sacrifice looks for vision, as Transitions

has teamed up with Callaway to provide a variety of frames for all on and off course occasions. For more information visit www.TransitionsSOlFX.com.

Get a Grip. Weather conditions are a part of the game. When the rain comes down or conditions are humid, maintaining your grip can be impossible. Enter a brand new manufacturer from Switzerland named HIRZL™. Their TRuST Control (all condition), TRuST Feel (grip and touch) and SOFFFT™ Flex (pro) models are designed for an effortless, yet firm grip. A combination of kangaroo and cabretta leathers and mesh provide for a grip no matter the condition; better yet, they don’t sacrifice durability. They all can be washed either by hand or in a machine (SOFFFT). The Control and Feel models actually provide a better grip when wet, rather than dry! For more information visit www.hirzl.com.

Long and Light. Tour Edge has always produced high-quality clubs, but their Exotics line takes it to another level. This year’s new XCG-4 driver is no exception.

Weighing-in at a mere 276 grams through the use of carbon (crown and sole inserts), weight can be shifted for a low center of gravity, providing forgiveness and distance. For more information visit www.exoticsgolf.com.

Home on the range. If you drive a car or golf cart you may already be dependent upon a GPS. If you travel and stumble upon a course without GPS on their carts what do you do? Hope it is well marked? Try a laser rangefinder from leupold®. Their line includes models that are tournament legal. They are extremely accurate. And, you do not have to download any courses; just point and shoot! For more information visit www.leupold.com/golf.

Cool and Comfortable. The two hottest shoe introductions featured cool designs and extreme comfort. Ryan Moore was at the show in Orlando to help TRuE linkswear™ introduce their new line of golf shoes. Features include a memory foam heel cup and a sock-fit liner to make these babies feel like your favorite slippers. Throw in waterproofing (one-year guarantee) and you will be cool and dry! Check these out at www.truelinkswear.com.

Kikkorgolf states, “saddles are for horses.” Their line looks more like it should be at the X-Games then at the country club, but for the younger set (or those who refuse to grow up) these are perfect. Comfy

yet functional. The right look on or off the course. See this new line at http://www.kikkor.com/.

Get Energized. Who hasn’t experienced aches, pains, lack of energy or a bad night’s sleep? You may have tried copper or magnetic bracelets with some (or maybe no) relief. Energycare™ has a new technology that is providing remarkable results for many golfers. Their Atraxlite™ technology attracts light through vibrations at subatomic levels. This light is then pulled into the blood stream, maximizing the body’s ability to absorb natural light. According to Energycare, it additionally improves the body’s electromagnetic energy field, strengthening its pathways of energy to help eliminate toxins. For more information visit www.energycareusa.com.

It’s a Jungle. There are several brands of unique headcovers that look like animals, but Daphne’s has always had the broadest and most realistic line. Pink flamingos, orangutans, bears or boars… so real looking you may have to hide the snack you took for the turn! For more information visit www.daphnesheadcovers.com.

If you want to hit straighter, longer and shoot lower scores…you must ask for these products at your pro shop. The worst that can happen is that you will look and feel better shooting your usual score!

Local Business Owner Attends

Business Forward Council at theWhite House

by PaTriCia CardONa

I feel so lucky that I was one of the attendees at Business Council and Business Forward Florida Nature Coast Business Leaders’ Briefing at the White House.

Local Business Owner Attends Busi-ness Forward Council at the White

Houseby PaTriCia CardONa

As a small business owner, it was a great, unique and once-in-a-lifetime experience! This gave me the opportunity to network with several business owners from Tampa, as well as White House officials. Included in such an insightful group was the City of Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn, the President of the Pasco Hernando Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Rocio Paulsen and the President elect Elena McCullough.

During the briefing at the Eisenhower Executive office building I learned very interesting things about the new health care laws, health insurance, taxes and much more. For example, I learned that If you have up to 25 employees, pay average annual wages below $50,000, and provide health insurance, you may qualify for a small business tax credit of up to 35% (up to 25% for non-profits) to offset the cost of your insurance. This will bring down the cost of providing insurance.

Also I learned that the new health care law forces insurance companies to play by the rules, prohibiting them from dropping your coverage if you get sick, billing you into bankruptcy because of an

annual or lifetime limit or discriminating against anyone with a pre-existing condition.

SelectUSA was also a theme of discussion at the briefing. It is a government-wide initiative to encourage, facilitate, and accelerate business investment in the United States by both domestic and foreign firms to create jobs, spur economic growth, and promote American competitiveness.

Also discussed was the ‘Startup America’ program which is the White House initiative to celebrate, inspire, and accelerate high-growth entrepreneurship throughout the nation.

Some of the Administration participants at the briefing were: Steve Olson, Executive Director, Select USA, U.S. Department of Commerce, Sol Ross, Director of Business Outreach, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Portia Wu, Special Assistant to the President and Workforce Policy, White House Domestic Policy Council, Ali Zaidi, Policy Advisor, White House Domestic Policy Council, Chris Vein, Deputy Chief Technology Officer of

Government Innovation, White House Office of Science and Technology Policy and Jon Carson, Director, White House Office of Public Engagement.

In a nutshell it was a great experience were we all had the opportunity to participate in an open dialogue with government officials. During the event we had the opportunity to share proposals and ideas, I think it is amazing that the current administration is focusing on helping small business owners grow through new mechanisms and incentives, and takes the time to listen to us.

At the core of Business Forward’s activities are a series of roundtables and briefings taking place around the country and in Washington, DC. In the first half of 2012, more than 2000 local business leaders from 500 cities have traveled to the White House to brief the President’s economic advisers. Business Forward also supports programming in 45 cities across more than 30 states.

While you may be walking into Anista New Tampa with a sore throat or a

mild fever - the cozy leather couches, impressive artwork and HD televisions are soothing enough to make you feel better instantly. But, if they don’t do the trick, Anista’s physicians may be able to help. The 2,000-sq.-ft. facility is designed to handle many medical problems than can develop unexpectedly and require immediate attention.

“I am a big fan of Anista and their entire staff! says Mark Smith, a South Tampa resident. Anista has a friendly and professional bedside manner: they listen and explain what’s going on and why in terms that a patient can understand. They also take everything you say into consideration. This practice cares about their patients and it shows! After your visit, you can expect a call from them just to check on you to see if you are feeling better. It’s nice to be out of the network healthcare systems and back to the real practice of medical “CARE,” as I get tired of being treated like a number.”

Some of the services offered at Anista are: Abdominal Pain, Sore Throat/Strep Throat, Ear Ache, Eye Infection, Headache, Respiratory Infections, Influenza, Suturing/Lacerations, Urinary Tract Infections, Dermatological Conditions, X-Rays - On site, Pre Surgical Physicals, Students/Sports Physicals (only $10 in time for back to school), Camp Physicals, Sports Physicals, Sports Injuries, Laboratory Services, Strep Throat Screening, Pregnancy Testing, Drug Screening, Cholesterol Testing, STD Testing, and Mono.

“Our goal is to provide cost-effective, high-quality health care,” says Dr. Michael O’Neal, Anista New Tampa’s Chief Medical Officer.

“We’re not looking to replace anyone’s family doctor. In fact, we want to complement patients’ primary physicians. We know that sometimes medical attention does not necessary warrant a trip to the emergency room and that most doctors’ offices close at 5 pm. We’re here to compliment the primary physician.”

Dr. O’Neal has published more than 20 articles appearing in a spectrum of scientific journals. Among many other achievements, Dr. O’Neal served as a physician for the Toronto Blue Jays for six years.

Working beside Dr. O’Neal is Anista’s Dr. Joeseph Fastaia. M.D. With more than 20 years experience in the Emergency Room, patients are in good hands with Dr. Fastaia.

In addition to urgent care, Anista offers the latest in advanced medical aesthetics performed by Jenny Molloy, ARNP. Jenny Molloy, ARNP, arguably one of the most proficient injectionist, is a highly-regarded medical aesthetics expert and a highly-skilled medical

professional. Ms. Molloy is a National Injectable Trainer to physicians in advanced techniques for neurotoxins (Dysport and Botox) and all dermal fillers.

Anista truly is a single place where you can find everything you need to look and feel healthy. Call us - or just stop in - for those times when you need help fast, but can’t get in to see your primary physician. v

The summer is nearly over and it is “back to school” time for busy families. From carpool to homework assignments, the hectic school week leaves little time to prepare meals the whole family will enjoy. But just because you’re short on time, doesn’t mean you have to resort to the drive-thru or takeout. Try this easy recipe for Quick Chili Mac Skillet. It will be a big hit with the whole family.

Start with everyone’s favorite elbow pasta, but not just any pasta. Choose one that offers some extra benefits that traditional pasta doesn’t provide. One that offers durum wheat semolina, which ensures the taste and texture of traditional pasta, but with a nutritional boost. Five grams of fiber

per 1-cup cooked serving and fewer digestible carbohydrates make it a delicious and healthy option. While the pasta cooks, brown ground beef and onion, making sure the beef is completely cooked. Stir in a pinch of chili powder for a peppery kick; add diced canned tomatoes and kidney or black beans – super simple. On these time-crazed days, swapping out hand-chopping for the can opener makes a lot of sense. Simply toss the chili with the pasta, sprinkle with cheese and serve a delicious one-dish dinner that will get the entire family back to the table. A green salad or fruit would be a great way to round out the menu.

Quick Chilimac SkilletPreparation Time: 10 minutesCook Time: 15 minutesMakes 4 servings

• 1/2 box Dreamfields Elbows

• 2 teaspoons canola or vegetable oil

• 1/2 pound lean ground beef (85% lean)

• 1 medium onion, coarsely chopped

• 1 to 2 teaspoons chili powder

• 1 can (14.5 ounces) diced tomatoes, undrained

• 1 can (15 ounces) kidney or black beans, rinsed and drained

• Salt

• Coarsely ground black pepper

• 1/4 cup shredded Mexican cheese blend Cook pasta according to package directions. Drain; return to pan.

Meanwhile, heat oil in large nonstick skillet over medium heat. Brown ground beef and onion 8 to 10 minutes or until beef is cooked through and onions are tender, breaking beef into large crumbles. Stir in chili powder then tomatoes. Cook and stir 2 to 3 minutes to blend flavors. Add beans; heat through. Remove skillet from heat. Toss beef mixture with pasta. Season with salt and pepper, as desired. Sprinkle with cheese. Note: If desired, ground chicken or turkey breast may be substituted for the ground beef. Nutrition information (1/4 of recipe): 425 calories; 25g protein; 29g digestible carbohydrates*; 12g total fat; 4g saturated fat; 40mg cholesterol; 331mg sodium; 11g total dietary fiber. *If traditional pasta is used in this recipe there is a total of 59g carbohydrate.

While it’s true that the Tampa Palms Womens Club does not meet

during July and August, some of our members still stay active in some of our programs. The Gutter Gals regularly bowl on Mondays at 12:00 at AMF University Lanes (13109 N 56th St). Shoes and bowling balls are available there for those who don’t have them. The ladies bowl a set amount of games for fun, not a league, and then return home. Drinks and food are available for purchase at the bowling alley if desired.

The TPWC bridge group, headed by Judy Alkow, still meets twice a month at Compton Park during the summer. We encourage all new members to come try out either of these great fun activities with us.

Willa Smith heads up our Goose Patrol, where members recovering from sickness, surgery, or tragedy can request meals as needed. A number of our ladies volunteer in the Goose Patrol, even during the summer. Willa would like to add “ Thank you so much to everyone for what you’ve done for the Goose Patrol!” We’ve had

so many wonderful members help out this summer.

Our ladies are are also busy working on this year’s Arts & Crafts Under the Palms festival on Oct 15th & 16th at Market Square (BJ’s) this fall. We are looking for artists and crafters who would like to participate this year in the festival.

Please call Judy at 813-903-9034 for more information, or email us at [email protected].

Calling All Artists & Crafters:

Schools in the New Tampa area outperformed the overall rankings of elementary and middle schools countywide, with nine of 11, or 81 percent achieving an A grade, and 10 of 11 or 90 percent getting an A or B.

Overall about 60 percent of the county’s 256 elementary and middle schools received an A or B and nearly 40 percent received an A, according to a release from the county school district. Grades for high schools will come out in the late fall.

State level education officials said 2012 was a year for schools to adjust to new standards and the state Board of Education established a policy that no school would fall more than one letter grade this year.

The state has graded schools on a scale of A to F since 1999 and the grades include FCAT scores and assessments at the end of the school year.

Girl Scouts of West Central Florida (GSWCF) is pleased to announce its move into

the new Leadership Center located at 4610 Eisenhower Blvd., Tampa. The move is taking place the week of July 23rd, and the offices and Girl Scout Store will be open to the public beginning Monday, July 30. Office and store hours are 8:30 am – 5:30 pm, Monday through Friday. An integral part of the build out are the girl spaces, which was in fact designed by a group of 17 Girl Scouts spanning grades 2 - 10 who met with Junto Design Studio’s architects, interior designers and space planners to create five spaces just for girls. The girls participated in design exercises and provided their ideas about design concept, furnishing and color palates. Their hard work resulted in five distinct areas just for girls, themed around STEM, healthy living, community, environment

and, of course, cookies. The girls saw their ideas go from hand drawings to blueprints to digital renderings, and are now doing site visits to check in on the progress before it becomes the finished product. “Working with the girls, and being a part of their vision for the themed spaces was a very fun and exciting process. The girls’ thoughtfulness, attention to detail and the very clear, intelligent design direction they provided was not only inspiring to us, but a true testament to values being instilled by the Girl Scout Organization,” said Bill Rapp, Principal, Junto Design Studio. “It’s been terrific having them involved throughout the process – from design to build out – and I hope that we meet their expectations!” In addition to this core program space for girls, the Leadership Center features an upgraded Resource Center

dedicated to supporting the 11,000 volunteers delivering the Girl Scout Leadership Experience. An expanded Girl Scout Store will be another showcase within the center, as well as conference facilities that are available for rental by outside organizations. “Careful attention to detail from the beginning has resulted in the fulfillment of the exciting design, from the curved walls and associated architectural details to the stimulating finishes resulting in a space that we’re sure everyone will enjoy,” said Mark Cooper, Senior Project Manager,

iConstructors. “We’re honored to be a part of the team that’s bringing this new Leadership Center to all Girl Scouts throughout our area!” The Leadership Center Capital Campaign is underway to help support the Leadership Center financially, and opportunities are available to sponsor various areas throughout the center including the girl spaces. Companies interested in additional information should contact Chief Development Officer Rebecca Pruitt: [email protected], or call 813-262-1759. v
