ASSOCIATIOn InFORMATIOn

There is a lot of excitement coming up and you can be involved with it all. First,

The Taste of New Tampa is coming up in March. We have partnered with the New Tampa Chamber of Commerce to make it a really big venue this year. The new location is at The Shops of Wiregrass and will be held on Sunday, March 11th. The hours have been extended, as well, to run from 12pm to 6pm. There is an ad and article on page 7 that goes over everything. If you would like to be part of this traditional event as a vendor or sponsor, please let us know. Second, we have also partnered with the Tampa Bay Times digital division to bring you the second FREE Facebook seminar on Wednesday, February 29th. Yes, that is leap day! :) That information is on page 26. Last, but not least, we have two contests, that will start in the March issue, for all residents of Tampa Palms.

The Cover Photo contest will now have an added benefit. Not only will the winning photo be on the cover, but a gift certificate from a local business will be awarded as well. So, send in your resident photos of events, sports, happenings, social clubs, school events, charities, special announcements like birth, wedding or graduations and anything fun!

The second contest will be “Find the hidden picture or word”. There will be a picture or phrase you will need to find in one of the advertisements each issue. All correct entries will be entered in the monthly drawing and one person will win a gift certificate from a local business.

So, be on the look out for the contests in the next issue of Tampa Palms News, send in your photos and stories and I hope you have a very Happy Valentine’s Day!

GOLF TIP OF THE MOnTHFrom Golf Head Pro Jeff Anderson PGA

Setting Alignment

Quite often golfers will miss their intended targets; not by bad swings or incorrect golf grips, they just aim

incorrectly. Alignment to the target is a simple procedure to master and you can be hitting more accurately in a few short steps.

The best way to set up your alignment is to imagine two parallel lines, like a railroad track. The “outer track” is a line from the ball to the target. The “inside track” is the line on which your feet, hips and shoulders should be aligned.

On the driving range, set up this simple demonstration. You can use two yard sticks or even two golf clubs. Set up your stance as normal, before hitting the ball, place one yard stick about two inches beyond the ball aligned with the target, place the second yard stick at your feet, making sure that both yard sticks are parallel, thus creating the railroad track. This will help you to position your feet and align you to the target. This will also help you with your swing path, helping you eliminate an inside out swing or an over the top swing.

Practicing at the driving range with this method will help train your muscles to recognize a “square” alignment and help you on the golf course later. On the golf course it is just a matter of imagining the railroad tracks to align your shot, before you swing.

Coach’s Cornerby Todd Timmons, Tampa Palms TBAY Head Coach Last month the article I submit-ted was about setting New Year’s resolution and or goals. This month I thought I would follow up with the cost of setting those goals. Often, when “Cost” is mentioned we auto-matically think of financial cost. Yes, there can be financial cost associated with resolution or goal setting. For example a New Year’s resolution of mine is to set more money aside, saving for a down payment on a home. The result of setting that goal, will see a reduction in “entertain-ment budget” i.e. a nice evening out to dinner and a show. Financial cost seems to be a far easier bite to chew and swallow because it is tangible. The real challenge comes when you have to weigh your intangible costs. There was a recent article published in the American Swim Coaches As-sociation monthly newsletter entitled “Coaching The Uncoachables” by Wayne Goldsmith (volume 2011—issue 11, page 6&7); it is in this ar-ticle I believe the intangible costs are best exemplified. Goldsmith lists the uncoachables as: Desire, Desperation, Hunger for Success, Determination, Resilience, Passion, Motivation, and Unbreakable Self-confidence. The above set of “core human charac-teristics” are more based on mental toughness and fortitude; physi-cally they are not something one can tangibly grab a hold of like money. It is the uncoachables that are the true measure of winning or success.

In my example of reducing my personal entertainment costs to begin saving for the down payment of a home, I possess the personal desire to pay a mortgage rather than a rent payment; desperation and determi-nation to really save so that I might find a piece of spacious property for both of my Great Danes to roam;

resilience to dine in and re-watch an old classic movie rather than spend the money to go out.

My colleagues and I have occasional frustration in our athletes’ level of “disconnect.” By disconnect I mean that on a consistent basis we have athletes that set a goal on paper (make a specific time cut/standard), and despite our best efforts as coaches to set these athletes up for success, they fail. The disconnect is that the goal is just a wish on a tangible piece of paper.

Mind you, as coaches we have also set process goals for these athletes on how to reach the end goal; while the end goal is there visible on paper, the process of consistence and dedica-tion to achieving those goals are at times lacking. Mirinda Carfrae, who recently took third in the 2011 Ford Ironman, relates this disconnect to “a mental and physical place where most athletes are not willing to go…you have to be willing to go to that next level, yeah there are people that go out there and say ‘yeah I am just going to go out there and do my best’ and I think that those athletes are not ready to put everything out there on the line because they are scared. Those athlete’s never win.”

In the article by Goldsmith he expressed the disconnect as “you can’t measure the athlete’s desperation to succeed: so desperate that they will endure the burning pain in their legs and agony in their lungs as they fight to find their limits.” My challenge to everyone that may read this monthly post is to be objective in your analysis of the uncoachables and how they relate to your own success in either seeing your New Year’s resolution or your life and athletic goals through to fruition. Be unwavering in your time management and inner strength to see your tangible and intangible costs through to the end. The rewards are indispensable when they come from a place that elevates your unbreakable self-confidence.

Tennis Tip Of the Month

This month’s tip is more of a philoso-phy on life, which relates to a clay court. It was written by Mary Carillo, a professional tennis player from the 70’s and who is now a broadcaster and journalist. She won the French Open Mixed Doubles Title with John McEnroe in 1977. I think you will enjoy reading this.

“LIVING LIFe ON CLay” by Mary Carillo I’ve got two teenage children, two quintessentially American kids, robust and strong, confident and pleasantly cocky kids who fully embrace the American dream. But my wish for them is to dream in different languages, to build a char-acter that translates well everywhere in the world. I want them to live their lives as though they were play-ing them out on clay.

• To know that not everyone who thinks, thinks alike.

• To know that the ground will shift under their feet; that it pays to be flexible, and patient.

• That lateral thinking is often rewarded, so try to look around the corners of your problem.

• That small things are hard to do....but everything, everything counts.

• There is something beautiful about trying your best, even if you fail. It’s a badge of courage. If you get knocked off your moorings, try hard to find them again.

• There is great comfort in consis-tency--always having someone or something you can trust.

• Life demands great discipline and deep daring

• A fatigued mind makes bad deci-sions.

• Don’t get easily depressed. It’s amazing what a stout heart and a nimble mind can do if you’re resilient enough to stay the course. The reward is the journey.

• More than anything I want my kids to know that there is nothing common about the common man.

• This is as good a classroom as any, for tennis or life.

Fitness TipTips from the Trainer Make Lasting Changes, by Evan Smith, CPT

Continued from page 8 The New Year is upon us and we have made our resolutions, why not include a fitness plan to get your body in shape and stick to it this year? If you want to make lasting changes, there are a few things you can do to make your resolutions work all year long. You should adjust your at-titude, change your lifestyle and come up with a plan for success. These three things can make a difference in whether or not you accomplish your resolution and help you stay out of the 80 percent failure rate for New Year resolutions. Change your attitude by having a positive outlook upon your goal; overhaul your diet by eating the most nutrient dense foods and plan for challenging yourself during workouts. 5 Simple Heart-Healthy energy Boosters- American Heart Association.

Want more energy? Who doesn’t? We’d all like to be able to do more and feel better doing it. Fast-fix energy drinks aren’t the answer, despite what TV ads tell you. The key to boosting energy is making healthy, lasting lifestyle changes. Here’s a quick rundown of ways to keep from feeling run down:

1Move more. In the short term, increasing physical activity to

increase energy seems counterintui-tive. In the long term, it works. You don’t have to be a marathoner to see benefits. Just start where you are and do more. If you don’t exercise, walk around the block and gradually work up from there. Your goal should be to get 30 minutes of brisk activity five days a week for a total of at least 150 minutes per week. You don’t have to do all 30 minutes at once. Three 10-minutes hikes in a day works too. If you try to do too much too fast, you might get hurt, so start slowly and stick with it.

2 Eat smart. Eat fresh fruit and veggies; the calcium and potas-

sium they contain is good for energy. If you need a quick snack during the day, keep a serving or two of your

favorite fruit or vegetable handy wherever you are. Avoid big meals; heavy, fatty foods can leave you feel-ing groggy. Eating smaller and more frequent meals will help balance out your energy and blood sugar levels over the course of the day. Whole grain fiber-rich foods are a great filler-upper. Fiber causes food to stay in your stomach longer, so you feel full longer than with quick fixes like coffee, high-calorie energy bars and candy — which rely on caffeine and sugar — and can lead to energy spikes and crashes.) Drink lots of water, too. Dehydration reduces energy levels.

3 Sleep. How much is enough? Each person is different. Most

adults need around seven hours, but you may need more. You need quality sleep, too. If you have sleep apnea, a condition that causes you wake up many times during the night, you won’t get the quality sleep you need and may feel sleepy all day. Heavy snoring is a major sign of sleep apnea. If your spouse or partner says you snore or that you periodically stop breathing for brief periods during sleep, tell your doctor.

4 Lose a few. Carrying around extra pounds saps energy. It

creates extra work for your heart and can raise blood pressure, too. Increasing your physical activity and eating a healthier diet to burn more calories than you take in is the way to go. Steer clear of fad diets; they don’t work.

5 Lighten up. Stress is an in-evitable part of life. That’s why

learning to manage it is important. Successfully managing stress means keeping a positive outlook and a healthy lifestyle, which helps fight energy-sapping depression. To take care of yourself, try taking physical ac-tivity breaks, meditating, taking time off and doing things you like. Avoid unhealthy ways to manage stress, include smoking, drinking excessive amounts of alcohol, overeating and relying on stimulants. Avoid these.

Most people who want more energy can get it. Following the steps above is a good start. You’ll feel more energetic, and feel better overall. You’ll also reduce your risk for heart disease and stroke.

The New Tampa Relay For Life held their first Team party at the Holiday Inn Express &

Suites in New Tampa. The upcoming team party dates are February 21st, March 20th, April 17th and May 1st at 6 pm. “The team parties are a

great opportunity to bring everyone together and share the mission of Relay, obtain fundraising ideas and resources, and recognize team accom-plishments,” said Bill Holster Team Development Chair.

This year’s theme for the 2012 New Tampa Relay For Life is “Journey To The Cure – Don’t Stop Believ-ing”. Teams that attended the party and that registered online at www.relayforlife.org/newtampafl were able to choose a Journey song title that will complement their campsite theme. Currently there are a total of 30 teams, 67 participants and over $6,500 raised. The goal is to have 45 teams and to raise $150,000. Fundraising is done online through the website. You can sign up online to create a team or join a team. Most of the New Tampa schools are signed up including Mort Elementary, Pride Elementary, Clark Elemen-tary and Benito and Bartels Middle Schools. Both Wharton and Freedom High Schools are also actively in-volved. “This is a chance to show your pride and spirit in the community and to give back to a worthy cause. We really want everyone in New Tampa to be actively engaged in supporting Relay,” said Bill Holster.

We are currently seeking a volunteer for the Sponsorship Chair role. If you are interested in this role, or if your business is interested in sponsorship, or you can offer a service or product for fundraising please call Sheri Fergu-son at 813-892-9782. The New Tampa Relay For Life will be held on May 18th at 6 pm at Wharton High School and runs through noon on May 19th. Relay is an 18 hour journey providing the light of day and the dark of night to parallel the physical and emotional effects that a cancer patient endures while undergoing treatment. One member of the team must be walking on the track throughout the 18 hour event.

All funds raised through Relay For Life stay local in the community and go toward a variety of programs such as Road To Recovery and Hope Lodge. For more information on these programs visit www.cancer.org or contact Bill Holster 813-994-1512. v

If you were at DOGTOBERFEST at the Shops of Wiregrass in October, then you will be excited

It will be on Saturday, February 11th from 10am-3pm with 50+ rescue groups, pet adoptions, contests, ven-dors, exotic animals and lots more! Cat Crusaders will be there again with our fully vetted (spayed/ neutered, shots, litter-trained, and even some coupons to help with litter, food, etc.) KITTENS and cats. If you are con-sidering a cat, please, please, consider an older cat...we have many cats that are 2+ years old like... SWEETUMS, a gorgeous brown tabby female with the biggest gold/green eyes I have ever seen! She was left outside an office building and a kind man rescued her. LISA, a stunning orange and white medium hair who is 5 1/2 years old. She is a little shy but just wants to be loved. Her first week with us, she kept

her back to us in her cage but would still let us pet her. It broke my heart. TOASTY, a 3-legged male whose owners lived in a townhome in Mead-owpointe and who moved out leaving this poor boy to fend for himself. He has beautiful black fur and is missing his back leg. A fireman and his family moved into this home and his 8 year old daughter alerted us about this poor boys’ circumstances. He is now safe and waiting for a family to love him! For allhe has been through, he is so gentle. He is 3 years old. F or the tenth year, the GFWC New Tampa Junior Woman’s Club has fulfilled the wishes

of underprivileged children through their dedication to the Special Santa program. This year the club provided more than 1800 toys to children in the Tampa Bay area. Head Elf, Patricia Murphy said, “This

year was the biggest yet. We had so many groups request assistance I couldn’t turn anyone away.” The Special Santa program originally started ten years ago as a project to assist families with children attending Mort Elementary School. Mort is a Title I school with 97% of the children in attendance living at or below the poverty level. This year, the project expanded to assist children at other Title I schools,

including Muller Elementary Magnet School and Sulphur Springs Elementary.“I also have a long-standing relationship with Friends of Joshua House and Kids Charity of Tampa Bay so I included them in order to meet the needs of the most children,” said Murphy. “I really love this project so much. I’ve already started buying for next year.” This year, the group placed collection boxes at local businesses, churches and clubhouses starting in November. “We didn’t have much luck with the collection boxes but we had several club members do collections in their offices and they went fantastically. So next year I’ll start planning earlier to be ready for company holiday parties,” said Murphy. “I also had a couple of people call after they saw an article in the paper; it was the most amazing thing,” said Murphy. Murphy also received cash donations from friends and family to purchase toys in addition to the budget allotment from the New Tampa Junior Woman’s Club. “When I made my request to the Board I was sure they would laugh and toss my request in the circular file,” she said, “but it was approved and I went back out shopping for toys the next day.” “This was the most amazing project and when the Elves started counting I couldn’t

believe we had acquired that many toys,” said Murphy. “One of the Elves said there were 100 toys in one box and I said, ‘are you sure?’ and I thought to myself how can that be? She counted them again and said ‘yep’. We looked around the house at all the boxes and started smiling. We exceeded our goal by 1000+ toys. I was so excited to see all the happy faces, I couldn’t wait! I also really have to thank YOUR Community Newsletters so much. I got a gigantic delivery from one of the readers ….it was totally amazing - over 1k in gifts for a family of 5. She was marvelous!” The final tally: 800 toys went to Mort Elementary for the Toy Room, 300 to Muller Elementary Magnet School and 200 to Sulphur Springs Elementary. The final 500+ were delivered to Kids Charity of Tampa Bay for distribution. Friends of Joshua House and A Kids Charity are local non-profits dedicated to improving the quality of life for foster children. If you would like to join us in our mission to improve the lives of others through volunteer service, please visit our website for club and membership information at www.GFWCNewTampaJuniors.org or friend us on Facebook. v

The General Federation of Woman’s Clubs (GFWC) New Tampa Junior Woman’s Club

has been invited to compete in Precision Kia of Wesley Chapel’s “Pay It Forward” event on Facebook in support of the project Books for Troops. “Precision Kia is selecting up to five local charities each month and letting their Facebook fans vote on which charity they want to receive a $1,000 donation. Fans get to vote as much as they want but only one vote per day per fan will count. The charity with the most votes at the end of the month will be given the donation” said Leann Rowe owner of Precision Kia of Wesley Chapel.

Beginning Wednesday, Feburary 1st Precision Kia of Wesley Chapel will have the new competitors posted and anyone with a facebook account can vote once a day. Just visit the facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/#!/precisionkiaofwesleychapel then click the like button. You will then be able to place your vote by posting on their wall “Books for Troops” everyday till the end of February. Patricia Murphy, Project Chairman said, “The Books for Troops project has been a rewarding experience and I continue to receive thank you notes from our troops which is such a joy.”

The Books for Troops project began October 1st with a goal of collecting 1,000 books to ship to deployed troops. As of today the project has collected 6,123 paperback books for troops but only 5,000 have been shipped due to monetary constraints. “Juniors budgeted $1,000 to cover the shipping costs of the project. This donation from Wesley Chapel Kia would allow us to ship an additional 2,500 books to our troops overseas,” said Murphy.

If you would like to make a donation toward postage for the remaining books please visit the GFWC New Tampa Juniors website www.gfwcnewtampajuniors.org and click the donate button on the bottom of the page. You can also friend Books for Troops on facebook or visit the blog BooksforTroopsTampa.wordpress.com for more information about the project and requests for volunteers. v

Rotary members raised over $1,000 to help two New Tampa area families at its

special Christmas meeting held at Mort Elementary in December. The recipients were Mrs. Irma Jean Thomas and Mr. David Herrmann.

The club was made aware of a tragic accident recently involving Hunter’s Green Head Golf Pro, David Herrmann. Mr. Herrmann’s insurance benefits had not yet

begun when he was involved in an accident where he was severely injured. Medical bills and loss of wages caused a great strain on the Herrmann family, especially during the holiday season. Hunter’s Green has been a loyal supporter of the New Tampa Rotary Club for many years and Rotary members showed their gratitude by helping one of their staff.

Mrs. Thomas has the responsibility of raising her five grandchildren on her

own. She has had medical problems and is on a fixed income. The members of the New Tampa Rotary Club have generously supported Mrs. Thomas for many years, helping her provide for the children during the holidays.

The Mort Elementary choir sang christmas carols and breakfast was provided by the faculty of Mort Elementary as a “thank you” to the Rotary Club for its continued support of the “Mort Manatee Market”, a behavior improvement program established by the Rotary Club of New Tampa.

The “Market” offers small toys each Friday morning to those students that have had good attendance and have had good behavior in class. The current budget for the Manatee Market has now grown to $12,000 annually. Club members also contribute volunteer hours in the Reader’s Program, reading with students one-on-one. v

Kindergarten Round-upPlease mark your calendar for Kindergarten Round-Up on Friday, February 24th at 8:30am in the cafeteria. Families with children entering Kindergarten in August are invited to come and tour the school, learn about the Kindergarten curriculum, and register for Kindergarten.

We will be accepting registrations for Kindergarten starting Friday, February 24th. Please register early to secure your spot!

Real-life Math-Home & School ConnectionWhen your child closes his math book, the learning should not end. Try these suggestions for fitting math skills into everyday activities:

1. Appoint your child scorekeeper for family games. She can practice doing math in her head by adding up points for Scrabble, Yahtzee, or Hearts.

2. At the grocery store, ask your child to estimate 2 lb. of green beans or 3 lb. of potatoes. Then, let him check the weights on the produce scale.

3. How much space does she need for a jigsaw puzzle? Have her look at the dimensions on the box (say, 18” X 24”) and use a yard stick to find a spot that is at least 18 inches wide and 24 inches long.

4. How long will it take to fold a load of laundry or drive to the bank? Suggest that he write down the estimate and then time the task on a watch, a cell phone or car clock.

5. When you bake, put your child in charge of measuring the ingredients (1 cup of milk, ½ tsp of salt) and finding the right sized pan.
