Besides celebrating Valentine’s Day, make sure this month and in

March, that you support Girl Scouts and buy lots of Girl Scout cookies. Thin Mints are my favorite.

Speaking of Valentine’s Day, I thought I would give you a little cheat sheet for all the “love “ cards you will be sending out. Use one of these short endearments!

Even if the sun refused to shineEven if romance ran out of rhymeYou would still have my heartTill the end of timeI Love You

Hearts and flowers... Poetry ... Love songs... Ribbons and bows...Yeah, I’d rather have the chocolate, too!

Mom, Valentine’s Day and every day...you’re the heart of our family!

I’m glad I married you.And I bet the kids are, too!

This Valentine’s DayI thought we would havesome good clean fun.Meet me in the tub.

This Valentine’s Day let’s not spend a fortuneon gifts for each other...But I know how you hate to be told what to do!

Some women don’t need flowers, candy, or candlelight dinners on Valentine’s Day.Please be advised thatI am not one of them.

It’s not every day that I tell you I love you...OK, maybe it is, but Valentine’s Day is still special.

You always show how much you carewith the loving things you doFrom a tender kiss to a warmembrace and whisper “I LOVE YOU”

Dear Palms Magazine Readers,

It is our pleasure to share some very good news with all of our members of Tampa Palms Golf and Country Club. We will be starting a million dollar investment to renovate the clubhouse in the spring of 2013. The project is an investment of considerable magnitude and is expected to allow us to better serve our members today and update our clubhouse for the future. This large-scale undertaking will reinvent the member dining experience at the Club, with the overall scope of the project expected to include:

• Renovated entrance and lobby including new furnishings

• New and expanded bar and dining area, perfect for socializing

• New outdoor patio and dining area with fire pits

• New high-tech media lounge – catch the game or watch current events

• An exclusive wine room

As you can imagine, the discussions around this project have been very exciting. This reinvention will help

ensure that our facility is relevant to members’ lifestyles and will greatly enhance the experience that we provide to all of you, our members and guests. The significant updates will also help keep our club competitive in the marketplace. We are confident that you will share our enthusiasm for these revitalizing plans as you see the changes taking place.

The project will begin in the next couple of months with details to come. Renderings for the renovations will be displayed throughout the Club. As details about each new stage of the project become available, we will share them with our Board of Governors and the general membership. Keep in mind that as the project progresses, there will undoubtedly be circumstances that require modifications to the initial plan. At this point, the construction schedule has not been finalized beyond more than the actual scope of the improvements. During construction, the Club will continue to operate to serve our members, and the entire team of Employee Partners will work

to ensure that any disruption is kept to a minimum.

We are thrilled to move forward and committed to keeping you well-informed about the project and pertinent details to improve our Club in the coming year. Please contact

David Kupstas via e-mail [email protected] if you have any questions or concerns.

Thank you in advance for your support.

GOLF TIP OF THE mOnTH

Having trouble controlling the distance of your pitch shots or not exactly sure how far your wedges

may go when executing? Try the tips below when practicing to

improve your short game.

• Arms should hang loosely from shoulders

• Feet are closer together than a normal shot

• Ball is slightly forward of middle

• Weight distribution, 60% on lead and 40% on back; keep this the same throughout.

• Choke down on the club, about half way down; this will help you control the club throughout the swing.

• Keep the tempo of the swing steady. Do not feel as if you are rushing; give the club time to set so you can transition to the downswing.

• Pivot through instead of leading with your arms. By doing this the butt end of the club will stay centered with your belt buckle the entire time. Do not flip your hands over. Let the club naturally rotate.

• Control the distance.

• “8-9-10 method” – think of your lead arm as the “hour hand” on a clock, if your back swing goes to “8 o’clock” it must come through to “4 o’clock” – “9:00 – 3:00”, “10:00 – 2:00”

• 45 yards = “9 – o’clock” then your 9 o’clock shot is for 45 yards.

• Practice until you find your distances for “8 o’clock”, “9 o’clock” & “10 o’clock”

Spa newsThe Perfect Skin Care Diet. Beautiful skin is healthy skin that is obtained through 3 basic steps. Diet, exercise and maintenance. Your skin

care diet is made up of a number of highly active ingredients that exfoliate, correct, build collagen, moisturize, protect and nourish all layers within the skin. Our recommended cosmeceutical skin care products will offer you the daily maximum nutrition for maximum benefit.

Your skin care exercise will consist of 5-6 monthly professional clinical Lifting treatments to resurface, renew and regenerate the skin on a deeper level that cannot be accomplished with home care. These treatments are performed by your licensed skin care therapist.

Your maintenance is made up of monthly professional treatments to continue the ongoing health of your skin. Depending upon your age, your skin cells turn over and begin to build back up every 28-40 days. A maintenance resurfacing treatment is therefore recommended every 4-6 weeks for maximum skin health. YouthProgramsKarate Classes

The Pro Karate Center was

established to promote good mental health, physical fitness, and self defense through the Okinawan style of karate, Isshinryu. Isshinryu’s main objective is the perfection of oneself through both physical and mental development. As students learn the art of self defense they acquire self-confidence, humility, and the ability to concentrate. Isshinryu Karate combines a well-rounded exercise program with important advantages over other styles. At Pro Karate Center we understand the problems unique to youngsters, and concerns parents naturally have. This well organized, professionally planned children’s Isshinryu program is designed to help parents in the task of  building a child’s self confidence, self discipline, positive outlook, and self esteem. They learn to take pride in themselves and their accomplishments. The Pro Karate Center offers a satellite program of classes right here at Tampa Palms Golf and Country Club. We feel our

Fitness Tips: Keep it Straightby Joanna van der Laan

The Stairmaster, treadmill and stationary bikes are excellent pieces of cardio equipment, but there is a right way and a wrong way! Slouching over the display panel or supporting your body weight on the rails limits the muscle usage and increases risk of injury. Standing upright and using the rails for balance only uses your core body muscles for balance and support. Get more out of your cardio workout by standing up!

A Guide to Starting Your Fitness TrainingThis article was provided by Personal-Trainer-Fantastic-fitness

Step 1 Assess your

fitness level: Assessing and recording base line fitness scores can give you bench marks to measure progress over time. An overall goal keeps you motivated to stick to an exercise program. You want to assess your aerobic fitness, muscular fitness, flexibility and body composition.

Consider recording:

• Your pulse rate before and after you walk 1 mile (1.6 kilometer).

• How long it takes you to run a mile, if you are new to exercise, or older, walk a mile?(1.6 kilometer.)

• How many pushups you can do in a minute? How many pushups you can do without resting between reps.?

• How far you can reach your toes, while standing? (don’t allow your knees to pop up, and if there is any pain experienced, record that as well).

• Your stomach and waist circumference.

• Your BMI

Step 2 Design your fitness program: This will keep you exercising every day. Keep these points in mind.

Consider your fitness goals. This helps you stay motivated and having clear goals keeps you focused.

Create a balanced routine. Aim for 150 minutes of moderate aerobic intensity. 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity. 2 to 3 days or more of strength training a week. 1 day of stretching and flexibility.

Go at your own pace. Start cautiously and progress slowly. If injured, talk with a doctor or personal therapists to help you design a program around your injury, and hire a personal trainer to see that you’re doing the routines correctly so you don’t re-injure yourself.

Build activity into your daily routine. Find a convenient time for you to work out. One that has less distractions so you are only focused on your exercise routine and nothing else. Use this time to be stress free. Schedule your workouts just like you would any other appointment.

Plan to include different activities every

day. Research different things to do. Hire a personal trainer for 1 session and have them demonstrate different exercises.

Try cross training, alternate different muscle groups each day. Workout main muscle groups and opposite muscle groups from that muscle.

Allow time to recover. Never work out the same muscle group the next day. Allow a day off for your body to rest and recover, which will decrease your chances of injury.

Write down your workout. This encourages you to stay on track and your workout will flow from one exercise to another.

Step 3: Assemble your equipment:Buy athletic clothing and appropriate shoes. Decide where you plan on workout and whether you want to involve a personal trainer? If you are buying your own equipment, buy something that is practical, enjoyable, and easy to use. You can also go to a local gym or fitness center and purchase a session with a personal trainer to help demonstrate how to use the equipment correctly.

Step 4: Get started: Now you’re ready for action. Keep these tips in mind.

Start slow and build up. Give time to warm up/ cool down 10 minutes total.

Break up your workouts.

Be creative, your workouts should include different forms of exercises for strength, and cardio.

Rope in your cardio in your daily life by going on a long walk, or taking your family out for a nice long hike, go out and bike the trails, run a trail.

Listen to your body.

If you’re sick or not feeling good take a day or two off. Take a break and look at your program, you may be working too hard and this might lead injury.

Step 5: Monitor your progress:Every 6 weeks retake your fitness test. Decide if you need to increase intensity,

increase number of sessions, or increase the length of your workouts. If you lose motivation create a new goal.

Work out with a partner, family member, a friend or hire a personal trainer.

Record your achievements and chart the date, the exercise, number of reps, number of sets and the weight used. Then create a chart to see progress over time. Good luck!

Tennis Tampa Palms Jr. Tennis AcademyQuICKSTArT TeNNISThe USTA has passed new rules governing competition for 10 and under tennis tournaments.  The new rules require that 10 and under tennis be played using slower moving and lower bouncing ball on smaller courts and utilizing shorter, lighter rackets.

10 and Under Tennis is designed around the same concepts as Little League Baseball and other Youth Sports such as soccer and basketball, all of which use equipment and court/field sizes scaled to the size of young children. This allows children to achieve success the first time out, and, sustain that success as they continue to develop their skills. Quickstart: This is a new format for 10 and under children just learning to play Tennis.  It is designed to bring kids into the game utilizing a shorter court , smaller rackets, and lighter balls.

2 Star: The player has received previous instruction and is familiar with the basic strokes such as forehand, backhand and volley. The player is in need of developing service, overhead and improving rallying skills. 3 Star: Player has received previous instruction and is familiar with all strokes. Player has begun to develop strokes to include spins and placement and can maintain a rally beyond 4 shots. This player has begun to formulate some basic playing strategies. the Serve! The serve technique involves mainly the kinetic chain synching all of the individual body parts together like the crack of a whip. Proper tennis serve technique involves utilizing the entire body on the serve and timing the tennis serve with exquisite accuracy. The power on the tennis serve is created mainly from the core, to the upper body all the way to the tennis racket handle and wrist (the final part of the kinetic chain) and all of this energy is transferred up to the point of contact. It is this exact timing of the energy transfer

that results in the powerful tennis serves we see at the pro levels.

Unleash the power in your serve and enjoy winning more matches! See you on the courts.

proper technique is emphasized in this class. Tournament Tough: This is an invitation only class designed for players dedicated to improving their tennis games in preparation for tournament and or league play.  Footwork, proper technique, drills, strategy and match play is heavily emphasized in this class. Advanced Academy: Oriented primarily toward competitive High School tennis players, this brand new (invitation only) class will emphasize the development of those skills necessary to compete at the High School level. Focusing on tennis-specific fitness/hitting drills, shot selection, and situational match strategies will be the priorities in Tampa Palms most intense and highest level class.

If you’ve been sitting on the sidelines, waiting for the best time to refinance or get a

mortgage to buy a home, think of 2013 as the best chance to act.

Here are some mortgage tips to help you with your mortgage decisions in 2013.

You can buy a house with a down payment of as little as $0.

If you don’t qualify for a conventional home loan, and are considering a home purchase in most areas of Pasco county or southern Hillsborough county, it pays to speak with a USDA Rural Home Loan expert. With low home loan interest rates, very low monthly mortgage insurance and

flexible guidelines, a USDA Home Loan will help you achieve your home buying goals. Compare FHA vs. conventional loans

Many homebuyers opt for a Federal Housing Administration mortgage because it allows them to buy a home with as little as 3.5% down. But the already costly FHA fees that are added to your loan will increase again in 2013. As the costs of FHA mortgages rise, some buyers may consider saving a little extra for a conventional loan. Buyers need at least 5% down to get a conventional mortgage, depending on their credit. If you can afford the slightly higher down payment, get quotes for FHA and conventional loans,

and compare the costs.

Ensure that your credit is golden

Credit standards remain tight. As new mortgage rules are unveiled in 2013, the standards are not expected to loosen. Review your credit report before you apply for a mortgage. Sometimes, paying part of your credit card balances can boost your credit score quickly. Generally, if you are using more than 30% of the available credit on your cards, you may be hurting your score. Also, check for credit errors and have them corrected.

Pay off your mortgage earlier

If you are one of those homeowners who dream about being mortgage-

free, the low-rate environment may be a good opportunity to refinance your 30-year mortgage into a 10, 15- or 20-year loan.

Underwater refinancers:If you owe more than your home is worth and have tried and failed to refinance, why not give it another shot in 2013? The Home Affordable Refinance Program, or HARP 2.0, was revamped to allow homeowners (second and investment homes, too) to refinance regardless of how deeply underwater they are, if your loan is owned by Fannie Mae. If your mortgage is owned by Freddie Mac, then the loan-to-value ratio is 105%.

If you are age 62 or older:

If you’re a senior, 62 or older, having difficulty keeping up with bills or healthcare expenses, there is a way out of your dilemma. A reverse mortgage allows you to draw on the equity in your home without having to sell it so you can retire more comfortably. Instead of making monthly payments— you’ll receive a payment each month or a lump sum.

Created by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), this federally insured private loan is essentially the opposite, or “reverse” of a conventional mortgage. A Reverse Mortgage loan is repaid only when you either sell your home or no longer live there as your principle residence. You retain ownership and title to your home. It’s yours just as it was before, but now you can benefit from the equity that’s been building in it for years. v

When considering a cosmetic or reconstructive surgical

procedure, there are many important qualities to look for in your plastic surgeon. The surgeon’s credentials and experience should be at the forefront of your decision-making process.

Dr. Paul R. Albear is committed to his profession and his patients. He is Board Certified in Plastic Surgery, Chief of Plastic Surgery at the James A. Haley VA Hospital, and Assistant Professor of Plastic Surgery at the University of South Florida. He is also actively involved at the committee level with the American Society of Plastic Surgery. “I am a member of multiple societies including The American Aesthetics of Plastic Society, the American Society of Reconstructive Microsurgery, and the American Society of Maxillofacial Surgery. In addition, our team is actively involved in the Society of Plastic Surgical Skin Care Specialists,” he adds.

His services range from non-surgical cosmetic medicine including facial fillers/injectables, Botox, and skin care products, to cosmetic surgery, body contouring and breast reconstruction surgery. Body contouring can include elective surgery to minimize sagging skin as the result of major weight loss, for example. One of Dr. Albear’s specialties is reconstruction microsurgery using perforator flaps. During this technique, Dr. Albear

uses a microscope to aid in complex operations on small vessels and nerves, an approach that increases accuracy during surgery. These procedures require incredible precision.

Dr Albear’s patients rave about his thoroughness and friendly personalized approach, as these testimonials attest:

“Dr. Albear is a fantastic surgeon. He has an excellent bedside manner with his patients. He sits down and talks to me like he has all day to explain procedures. He makes you feel special. His office staff is wonderful and they are very accommodating. It is a great experience and I would drive from anywhere to see him.”

“After several consultations with different plastic surgeons for a tummy tuck and breast augmentation, I chose Dr. Albear to be my surgeon. After viewing photos of prior patients that he performed similar surgeries on, I felt comfortable entrusting him to meet my expectations.”

Convenient to all of the Tampa Bay area, his office is located at 26844 Tanic Drive in Wesley Chapel.

His friendly staff can even schedule Saturday consultations, by appointment. Call 813-929-7400 to schedule your consultation today. For more information go to www.albearplasticsurgery.com. v

It was a regular Thursday afternoon when Chuck felt his first symptoms — intense nausea, chest pain

and profuse cold sweats. Sensing it was a heart attack, he asked his son to call 9-1-1. Chuck was rushed straight

to the Florida Hospital Tampa ER.

Their expert medical team never once gave up on Chuck. Not after he flatlined. Not after they tried four times to

revive him. Not even after his heart stopped for a full five minutes. At the Florida Hospital Pepin Heart

Institute, located at Florida Hospital Tampa, an emergency heart catheterization saved Chuck’s life.

Because he was able to reach Florida Hospital Tampa in time, Chuck received the right critical care and cardiac therapy. To this day, he’s grateful beyond words. “Thank you is a very small thing to say to the people who saved my life.”

Calling the bid process a “home run” for County garbage customers, Hillsborough County Commissioners voted unanimously in January, during a special workshop, to select a new service option that will bring automation to the way residential garbage and recyclables are collected from more than 250,000 households.

Known as “2-1-1 Automated Service,” County residential garbage customers will continue to receive

twice-weekly garbage collection, once-weekly recyclables collection, and once-weekly yard waste collection. But beginning this October, they will be bringing garbage and recyclables to the curb in wheeled carts provided by the County for emptying by specially-equipped trucks.

The current residential solid waste collection contracts, which have been in place for nearly 17 years, expire Sept. 30. Bids were sought last fall on four possible service options, including the current manual collection of garbage and recyclables.

When the bids were tallied, all of the options meant lower costs for the County, and ultimately customers. The 2-1-1 Automated Service option is projected to save the County more than $7.5 million annually, a 22 percent reduction than if the current contracts had been renewed.

Besides lower costs, the new contract will enhance the financial integrity of the County’s solid waste system,

COMMunity nEWsCounty Administrator Mike Merrill told Commissioners during the workshop this afternoon.

“This contract will allow us to get to a place we’ve never been before,” he said.

Commissioners awarded contracts to private haulers for residential collection in each of five newly-defined districts during a regular Board meeting on Jan. 24th. Commercial customers will still be able to negotiate directly with any of the private haulers for collection.

Commissioners expressed concern about job loss when the automated option is implemented. Commissioner Al Higginbotham said he would be bringing back an agenda item to discuss what the County might be able to do to help.

Commissioners made their decision following an extensive campaign to gather public input into how customers felt about the service options.

As the nation celebrates National Mentoring Month, it is important

to let all mentoring-minded people know how much they matter. Across the nation, Big Brothers Big Sisters is reconnecting with alumni Bigs, Littles, donors and family, staff and board members. The reunion effort is an extension of Start Something®, a national initiative Big Brothers Big Sisters unveiled two years ago in partnership with the Ad Council. The effort invites all adults – not just volunteers -- to support quality mentoring to change the odds for children facing adversity.

The 2013 nationwide search and reunite effort extends Start Something to hundreds of

thousands of people who have an affinity with Big Brothers Big Sisters, but have not been asked to stay or become re-engaged with the organization. Our hope is that by bringing our alumni together and showing them how much we appreciate them, we will open avenues for people who are already invested in our work to “Start Something [Again]” to help kids succeed in school and life.

Each year, Big Brothers Big Sisters serves nearly 2,000 youth in Hillsborough, Polk and Pasco County. Most of them are children of single, low-income or incarcerated parents or sons and daughters of military personnel. Longstanding independent research and Big Sisters Youth Outcomes Survey™ results find

children enrolled in Big Brothers Big Sisters improve in areas such as school, behavior and self-esteem.

Today, as Big Brothers Big Sisters embarks on a nationwide search to reunite with former Bigs, Littles, donors and family, staff and board members, I encourage you to ask friends and family once involved to visit our websites and reconnect with us. And if you are the person with whom we have lost contact, we believe National Mentoring Month is a perfect time to Start Something [Again]. v

resIDent story

As a member of the Youth Advisory Board for gen-erationOn, Marc Berson, a

Junior at Freedom High School, continually reflects on how he can extend the reach of work that he has initiated in his own Tampa community. The majority of his volunteerism takes places as part of his role as President of Cafe Freedom, a student organization dedicated to mobilizing youth to engage in community-wide im-provements, which was founded at Freedom High School in 2009. The club instituted a literacy program in collaboration with Title I elementa-ry schools in Hillsborough County and began working on international initiatives, such as raising funds to support rebuilding efforts in Haiti and distribute academic resources to preschools in Kingston, Jamaica.

To help fulfill Cafe Freedom’s commitment to promotion of literacy and global change as well as his role as a representative of the generationOn Youth Advisory Committee, Marc recently travelled to Ghana to work with young children in Cape Coast. Within the Ghanaian context, poverty may inhibit children’s access to quality education and academic resources. Marc saved his own money from

birthday and holiday gifts to fund his travel. He also collected books and educational supplies to donate to the classrooms.

Marc connected with administra-tors at the University of Cape Coast to introduce the work of generationOn and Cafe Freedom, describing initiatives to civically engage high-schoolers as men-tors for primary grade students to develop young children’s literacy skills. Increased access to reading materials can improve students’ fluency, comprehension, phonologi-cal awareness, and word recognition skills, and Cafe Freedom has pro-vided books to over 1500 children in the Tampa community.

The University of Cape Coast is interested in ongoing collabora-tion with Marc on similar projects in Cape Coast in which second-ary school mentors help build the literacy capacity for the next gen-eration and serve as exemplars of active youth citizenship. Moreover, Marc has been asked to partner with the Cape Coast community in finding resources to build a new Early Childhood Learning Center that could provide valuable high quality educational experiences for young children.

As a follow up, Marc answered a few questions about his trip and his future goals at Freedom High.

How has this trip impacted you? What have you learned from it personally?

This trip expanded my worldview about the role of schools and com-munities. I visited villages where the children had few material possessions, but their families and communities provided vibrant and supportive experiences to foster the growth of the children. Rather than listening to iPods in isolation, we sang songs and danced on the beach. There were no toys, but we played with sticks and items we discovered around us. We worked together to pull in the daily catch of fish. And what are your future plans to continue your efforts for the children in Ghana?

The classrooms have few resources available. Many of the children have limited access to books or school supplies. I will be continu-ing to work with liaisons in Cape Coast to provide ongoing access to school materials for their youngest learners.

Is there anything that the Tampa Palms community can do to help you, and the students at Freedom High, achieve these goals?

The community in Cape Coast would like to build an early learn-ing center to serve as a model for teachers to learn how to work with young children. I am looking for funding to help support this initiative. Also, Cafe Freedom, our organization at Freedom High School, is in ongoing need of children’s books for our work with Hillsborough County Elementary Schools.

Each year we provide books to children in our local commu-nity who have limited access to resources in order to foster their excitement and engagement in reading. Later in the Spring, Cafe Freedom will be holding our annual April Pool’s Day Event to promote water safety and drown-ing awareness. We would love for the community to come out and participate in this free event with their children. v

unless you’ve been living under a rock the last few years, you know that Food Trucks are

the latest rage for foodies, hipsters, or anyone who wants to try unique and freshly prepared gourmet fare on the go. Most major U.S. cities host food truck rallies, and the Tampa Bay area is no exception.

These rallies often include live music as entertainment for the hungry hordes that descend in droves. One of the more

popular events is called Flicks & Food Trucks, held on the third Thursday of every month from 6 - 10 pm.

This venue offers a varied selection of 10 - 15 gourmet food trucks as well as independent short films, predominantly created by Florida filmmakers.

The Flicks and Food Truck website offers this advice for first timers:

• Some trucks take credit cards, but not all trucks do.

• Plan to expect waiting in line for your orders. While the food is worth the wait, it does not come fast because it’s not “fast food”. These are

full blown restaurants on wheels and food is made to order.

• Plan to experience more than one food truck. Everyone serves something different so ordering small is key!

• Consider it similar to tailgating: Most people stand and eat at Food Truck events. If you are one who likes to sit and eat, then stake out a spot on a curb or bring a chair!

• Be sure to bring cash for your purchases. Vendors appreciate small bills vs. 10’s & 20’s.

Go to www.tampabaymarkets.com/flicks-and-food-trucks for more information about this event. Or go to www.tastingtampa.com for other events, such as the Mayor’s Food Truck

Fiesta each month. You can also follow Tampa Bay Food Truck Rally on facebook to get the latest details about other locations.

To keep up with the street food vendors that are roaming the Tampa Bay area each day, there’s a new “app” for iphones or Android devices. Truckspotting.com outfits local food trucks with real-time GPS units and personally meets with the individual vendors to make sure accurate information and weekly calendars are provided to the hungry public. Finding your favorite organic bistro on wheels, mobile burger joint or favorite taco truck will no longer be a guessing game! v

Peter Stilton is a Tampa artist who creates sophisti-cated whimsical paintings in

a variety of themes and media that are inspired in part by the “fete” paint-ings of Rococo France. A full-time artist for three decades with over 40 solo shows in the U.S. and France, including La Sorbonne, his work is in private and corporate collections in the U.S., Europe, and the Middle East. Honors include work in the state collection of France (Office of the Mayor of Paris at Hotel de Ville) and in the permanent collection of the Springfield, MA, Museum of Fine Arts.

Stilton’s lyrical style has been described as linear expressionism with diverse subject matter, including symbolic geometric abstracts. His art draws the viewer into a world of visual surprises and sophisticated whimsy.

“My work is a kaliedoscope of all the places, colors and images I experience,” Stilton states. “It is a congruence of the past and present moment with a tangent that points to the future. Figurative or rhythmically abstract, my paintings re-veal a substantive mental world beyond the material prose of existence. Child-like

trust opens the doors to new vistas and imaginative juxtapositions where images change dimension and properties in uncharted and delightful ways, such as the pure joy of color and line, or the Chip-pendale chairs, Rolls-Royces, pipe organs, and cellos all enjoying the beach.”

For more information about the artist, visit his website stiltonstudio.com. v

Whichever your favorite Girl Scout Cookie – Thin Mints, Tagalongs, or Samoas – the wait is over! Through March 16th, thousands of Girl Scouts will take orders for your favorite Girl Scout Cookie varieties, including Do-Si-Dos, Dulce de Leche, Samoas®, Tagalongs®, Thank You Berry Munch, Thin Mints, Trefoils and returning for a second year due to its popular 100th anniversary debut – the Savannah Smiles!

Girl Scouts in west central Florida will deliver thousands of cookies beginning Feb. 15th. New this year, Girl Scout cookie packaging has been completely redesigned to showcase more about the impact of the cookie program on girls’ skill development. For those

collectors out there, this is the last year to purchase what are now referred to as “classic packaging.” The new packaging will be available this year and in years moving forward. Cookie box size and cookie amounts remain.

Boy Scout newsBoy Scout Troop 180 can look back on a very busy and successful final quarter of 2012. Scouts were involved in a number of service activities including sorting food for the needy at Feeding America at St. Mark’s Church, assisting Cub Scouts with Halloween-related activities at a weekend camp, and participating in the Veterans Day Parade at James A.

Haley V.A. Hospital with other scout troops. The Troop also congratulates three boys for recently earning scout-ing’s highest honor, Eagle Scout rank: Nicholas Guggemos, Ethan Walther, and Caleb Scott.

If you are looking for a Troop to join, we always welcome new members. We also welcome parents to share their time and talents as leaders. Even if your time is limited, you’ll find the Scouting program rewarding.

Our Troop is sponsored by Grace Episcopal Church in Tampa Palms which is where we meet most Sunday evenings, unless we are camping. If you’d like to visit us or have ques-

tions about our Troop, please send me an e-mail message at: [email protected]

mCTEACHEr nIGHTLiberty Middle School students and families who dined at McDonald’s on January 14th might have been surprised to see Principal James Ammirati and some of their favorite teachers behind the counter. The school participated in “McTeacher Night,” cooking and serving food as a PTSA fund-raiser. Mr Ammirati said, “It was a great evening where students and their families came out and enjoyed a great dinner at McDonald’s.

There was a terrific turnout that’s great for Liberty’s PTSA and our community.” Funds raised will enhance curricular programs at the school. Mr. David Dick, who worked the French fry station remarked, “It is a great opportunity to help raise money for Liberty. The kids love seeing us outside of school and working at McDonald’s. It was a lot of fun and we look forward to doing it next year!”
