Who is your PAContributorof the Year?National PA Day, in conjunctionwith office*, are delighted tolaunch the ‘PA Contributor ofthe Year Award’, and voting isnow open! We want to hearabout anyone you feel hasbeen influential andinspirational in the PAcommunity over the last 12months – whether it’s a PA or afigurehead in the profession.

Do you know a PA who hasbeen an exceptional mentor ora colleague who has set up aninvaluable network? Has theperson behind your favouritemagazine created a publicationwhich has inspired you toachieve more in your role or hasthere been a figurehead from aparticular club, association orgroup that has been a guidinglight in your career? These arethe people we want to hearabout. The only rules are youcannot nominate yourself or thesame person more than once!

The award will beannounced on National PA Day(7 October) at office*. Who’sgoing to get your vote? Makeyour nomination atwww.nationalpaday.co.ukbefore midnight on 19thSeptember.

Gain valuable CPD hours at the seminarsoffice*’s 32 training seminars are now CPD-accredited,making them even more valuable to your personal andprofessional development. Sessions are available fromas little as £23 each as part of a package, making them acost-effective training opportunity for your company.

The 2014 programme features 12 new trainers from companies including The IT TrainingCompany, Appetite for Business and Think Productive. The programme has been carefullycrafted to ensure that there is something for you, whichever areas you wish to develop. Topicsbeing covered include both the practical – such as email management and note taking – andthe aspirational – including progressing into management and business strategy. Find theprogramme on page 9, and purchase your place online to secure the session of your choice.

What do you like mostabout being a EA? We all say the variety of therole and that is the crunchpoint for most PAs, beingable to get involved indifferent facets of thebusiness and feel like you aremaking a contribution, ratherthan a conveyor belt of diaryentries and travel. It’s aboutbeing able to manage thestrategic priorities of yourDirector and delivering whatis required to the best ofyour ability. I love thesatisfaction I get frommanaging a project or eventwell.

Do you have any advice forPAs that are just startingout in the profession? Network like your lifedepends on it, never makeassumptions about anythingand ensure that you have avoice with your Director andwithin your company. Valueyourself and your skillset andbe clear about the value youcan add to an organisation.Be an advocate for changeand work in a businesspartner sense with your boss, rather than in the old schoolsubmissive mode which nolonger suits the modern dayPA role.

How hasyour rolechanged sinceyou first started in yourcareer? It has changed beyondrecognition. I am reallyenjoying the way the role hasevolved over the years andnot knowing what is to come,it would be hard for anyoneto predict. I think we will seeparts of the role becomeextinct over time as newtechnology takes over but Idon’t feel the role itself everwill. It will simply change andallow us to grow our skillsetseven more.

Victoria is EA to the Group HR & Group Technology Director at Hays PLC. Don’t miss her inoffice* Theatre 3 on Tuesday at 11:45, and at the Hot Topic Zone on Wednesday at 14:15

If sowhat do you lookfor in a PA?I’ve been a PA atthe start of mycareer, had PA’swhilst running my ownbusiness and trainedhundreds, if not thousandsso far as owner/manager ofa training business, so I thinkI have a fairly uniqueperspective on the role.Apart from great technicalskills which have obviouslywidened over the years, it’skey for a PA to be able tosubstitute for their bosswhenever they’re out of theoffice. So great interpersonal

skills, the ability tolead and manageeffectively, and alevel of commercialnous are for mewhat differentiatethe average PAfrom the real stars.
