THE INAUGURAL Gamescom inCologne is a five-day games expo forconsumers and trade. Along with amix of festival-style events, the showconsists of content for both trade andnon-trade attendees with dedicatedentertainment, conference andbusiness areas.

The exhibition centre consists of 11halls with 284,000 square meters ofpotential exhibition space, four

entrances via the boulevard, a sizeableoutdoor area, more than 60 meetingrooms, two modern press centres anda spacious VIP area.

In terms of layout, halls four andfive are reserved for trade partnersand businesses (see right), meanwhilehalls six through nine are set aside forthe entertainment areas, with 80,000square metres of exhibition space. Allof which is connected through the

boulevard, which features food andnon-food shops, a bank, a travelagency, telecommunications servicesincluding wireless LAN hotspots, apostal service and parcel delivery.

Cologne itself is a beautiful city,with plenty of places to visit, explore,drink and eat, and can be reached viarail, road and air, with a train stopright outside of the fair. Check belowand right for all the details you’ll need.

Gamescom Business Area:Designed as a place for retailers,publishers, service companies anddevelopers to do business.

Gamescom Entertainment Area:An E3-like showcase of upcomingproduct designed for both trade andconsumer visitors. The organiserspromise ‘jaw-dropping indoor andoutdoor performances’. Individualgaming zones for specific genressuch as sports, lifestyle, action ande-sports also ‘make this trade fairunique’.

Gamescom Festival: Runs fromFriday, August 21st to Sunday, August23rd. Starting with a music concert,the festival will stretch beyond theexhibition centre to include a numberof different events to showcase theculture and variety of gaming.

Gamescom Conference Programme:There are two lecture-based eventsrunning in complement ofGamescom. They are:

GDC Europe:Running ahead of the mainGamescom event, from August 17thto 19th, this developer conferencepromises a mix of keynotes, lectures,roundtables and workshops withspeakers from across Europe andaround the world.

gamesCompetence: Taking place on Thursday, August20th, this is a special forumdedicated to discussing the issuesaround child-safety and age-appropriate content in video games.The forum is backed by the state ofNorth Rhine-Westphalia (whereCologne is located).

FOOD AND DRINK:As well as plenty of places to visitaround the city, there are 37restaurants, snack bars and cafesavailable on site.

TRANSPORT:There is many ways to get toCologne and the trade fair, witheverything you need to knowabout travel arrangementsavailable at www.koelnmesse.com.

During the trade fair, youradmission ticket or trade fair passis valid as a travel ticket on alllocal public transport. The passesare also valid as travel tickets foran extra two days before and afterthe fair.

By air:Cologne is roughly 90 minutes orless away from almost all ofEurope’s capital cities, and about15 minutes by car or direct trainfrom Cologne-Bonn Airport. Thereare direct flights to some 160countries, while Düsseldorf Airportis roughlty 45 minutes by car or25 minutes by train.

By rail:Visitors can take the train directlyto the event, with trains stoppingat the Koelnmesse/Deutz stationopposite the exhibition centre.There are also connections to theICE 3 high-speed train route toFrankfurt, daily connections viatrain firm Thalys from CologneBrussels and Paris. There are alsodaily connections by Eurostar viaBrussels to London.

By road:Cologne has an excellent networkof motorway and access roads.When in the city there is trafficguidance for access toKoelnmesse without traffic lightsor intersections (simply follow thegreen signs), while the motorwayexit leads you straight to theexhibition centre car park. There isparking space for some 15,000vehicles, and there are shuttlebusses around the exhibitionground.

CathedralThe Cologne Cathedral (Kölner Dom) is anarchitectural masterpiece. It sees six millionvisitors a year and features two gigantic towersthat dominates the landscape. Admission to theCathedral is free, although there is a small feefor those wishing to ascend the tower.

Romanesque ChurchesThere are 12 Romanesque churches foundwithin the old city walls. For centuries, thetower of Groß St. Martin has been a significantpart of Cologne’s panorama, which is framed bythe twin towers of St. Kunibert in the North andSt. Severin in South. The St. Gereon church,which is named after a Roman officer, is theprinciple attraction in the North of Cologne’sOld Town.

MediaparkFound near the inner city, the Mediapark is thecentre for IT, communication and mediatechnology. The giant area is home to futuristicarchitecture, a huge film palace called theCinedom and the Saturn electronic superstore.

EL-DE-HausThe former office building and Gestapo Prisonwas named after Cologne businessman LeopoldDahmen. The building’s shell was modified bythe Gestapo for inhuman purposes and is nowa memorial, with hundreds of inscriptions foundscratched into the walls of the cells.

Claudius ThermeThis Spa provides rest and recuperation after along day at Gamescom. Located in theRheinpark and Roman in style, it is one of thenicest therma baths in Europe, with naturalspring water, indoor and outdoor pools,sunbathing areas, catering, various types ofsaunas, steam baths and therapeutic treatments.
