On-Track: Eyes of Global Industry on Taipei CYCLE 2011

It’s coming fast! Taipei CYCLE 2011, the 24th such event unfolds March 16 – 19 at record size with 900 exhibitors using 3,050 booths (739 oversea booths) to interface with a record turn-out that’s projected to exceed 35,000 visitors. Cycling has always been a global event and this spring’s affair will be even more so with 219 exhibitors from overseas.

Among the Taipei CYCLE events ready to go are the Tour de Taiwan, which started in 2006, planned for March 19 through 28, will take place in ten stages. More than 180 riders are warming up for this race that spans the nation.

With the show also comes the 15th annual International Bicycle Design Competition (IBDC). Other events include BMX Performances, outdoor test-r iding, forums on international trends in bicycles and electric bikes, symposia on

international technologies and market research in various fields. There's also an Innovative Bicycle Design Competition awards ceremony, a Taiwan Cycle Night and much more.

Growing with the industry!

The success of the Taiwan cycle industry is a key part of the Taiwan miracle wherein Taiwan turned around a low-priced smokestack industry into lean hi-tech, high value industry that leads the pack. That didn’t come easy! Three decades ago domestic plants were largely involved in OEM production, particularly for North American and European outlets. But with years of trail these producers have honed their skills to become some of the most praised

ODM players on the market.

In fact, GIANT and Merida now rank among the world top value producers of bikes. Behind much of this progress is the 24th Taipei CYCLE, one of the world’s top three trade cycle shows and one of the top three in the world that connects every facet of biking and the industry.

The growth and success of Taipei CYCLE mirrors the success of t h e i n d u s t r y . A t t e n d a n c e s b y international buyers have soared from 3,432 in 2001 to 4,786 in 2009. The coming event is now projecting a record turnout of more than 5,300 international buyers who let Taiwan once again map out the future of the world’s greenest rational means of transportation.

There is another event that the visitors cannot miss in Taipei: The Taipei Int’l Flora Expo, from November 6, 2010, to April 25, 2011. This is the first time that Taiwan is holding an International Flora Expo approved by AIPH (International Association of Horticultural Producers). Fourteen venues will display unique species of flowers from Taiwan and amazing gardening skills at the same time, and the Expo is going to welcome more than 8 million visitors. For overseas visitors on a business trip, it is also highly recommend that they see these fabulous flowers next year.

The 2010 Taipei International Flora Exposition

Founded in 1970 to help promote foreign trade, the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA) is the foremost non-profit trade promotion organization in Taiwan. Jointly sponsored by the government, industry associations, and several commercial organizations, TAITRA assists Taiwan businesses and manufacturers with reinforcing their international competitiveness and in coping with the challenges they face in foreign markets.

About TAITRA

Independent from TaiSPO (Taipei Int’l Sporting Goods Show) in 1988, the first Taipei Int’l Cycle Show proved an unparalleled indicator of the direction of the bicycle industry.

The 1997 Taipei CYCLE in its 10th event, featuring 533 exhibitors with 1539 booths, underscored the feeling of a turnaround taking place in the industry, reflected in the wares displayed.

Marking the 20th edition of the event, Taipei CYCLE 2007, with "Value Innovation, Trend Leader" as its main theme, unfolded with the largest ever exhibitor total of 694 firms with 2299 booths. In that year, visitor increased 36% to 45,000 and overseas buyers increased 11% to over 3,900.

EU firms joined the 2010 show enthusiastically with famous brands. In 2010 Taipei CYCLE show, 894 firms from 36 countries exhibited at 3,018 booths. Makers here used several distinct strategies to promote their original brand bikes.

Exhibition Hall The Taipei World Trade Center NANGANG Exhibition Hall ( T W TC NANGANG) is a purpose-built exhibition complex consisting of two exhibition halls, one over the other. Located to the east of the Taipei World Trade Center (TWTC), the TWTC NANGANG is about 15 minutes drive

from the TWTC along the Huangdong Expressway. This complex, Asia's newest trade-show venue, now has the capacity of 46,175 square meters. The floor can be divided into three areas to accommodate three events taking place at the same time.

The crisp autumn of central Taiwan provided the perfect backdrop to rally the global media representing 14 countries, key targets for Taiwan’s massive bicycle and bike part output that blankets the world. Most of those in the media scrum of the 4th Pre-Show Media Tour were the eyes and ears of their respective regions. These were Bicycle Retailer and Industry News (USA), Bicycle Life (Korea), Bike (Spain), Bike Action (Brazil), BikeTrade Canada (Canada), Bike Europe (Holland), Ciclismo (Italy), Cycle Press (Japan), Cyclinfo (Switzerland), Eurobike Show Daily (Ireland), Magazyn Rowerowy (Poland), Mountain Bike (Australia), Sportfack (Sweden) and Togoparts (Singapore). Media reps more than doubled last year’s press tour, a clear indication of soaring interest in Taipei CYCLE, which is organized by TAITRA (Taiwan External Trade Development Council), wing the organizer’s commitment to promoting the 2011 show.

900 Exhibitors on-track to join 2011 event reflects global love for cycling

DAY ONE: Oct. 4: Media Tour kicks off with press group travels from hotel near Taoyuan Airport to the Sun Moon Lake in central Taiwan. After dropping our bags we’re bused up to the Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village where we get briefed about Taiwan’s 14 first nations, the core native tribes of the nation. After sampling traditional native dishes, we hike along a 1,877-meter ropeway to Sun Moon Lake, Taiwan’s largest fresh water lake, 727 meters above sea level. Then check into the Fleur de Chine Hotel on the lake.

DAY TWO: Oct. 5: Begin the morning with a group cruise to the other side of the lake where our bikes have been dropped off and waiting. We ride them about 23 kilometers along the lakeshore back to hotel. Join press conference for Taipei CYCLE 2011 and new product presentation — main program of this media tour at the Fleur de Chine Hotel. TAITRA Executive Vice President W.J. Huang states, “The Taipei Cycle Show has become more and more important as it has grown to a level comparable with Eurobike and Interbike. The coming event builds upon the 2010 show that hosted 894 exhibitors who used 3,018 booths to interface with 30,000 visitors.

He added that Taipei CYCLE will field a record 900 exhibitors (219 overseas companies and 681 Taiwanese companies) with a record 3,050 booths (739 for overseas companies and 2311 for Taiwanese companies) and projects

a turnout of 35,300 people. Huang added that Taiwan export stats of Taiwan bicycles through August were upbeat increasing from the same period of 2009 both in quantity and value, especially in its growth in value that boosted unit price.

Then Francois Liang, general manager of CHC (Cycling & Health Tech Industry R&D Center), revealed some breaking E-scooter developments at the center. The new product presentation, follows up with displays from manufactures like Tektro, Xixtro, King Roof, Alligator, Wellgo and Marwi who highlight their hottest models, including King Roof’s world’s first carbon bike carrier and Zixtro’s saddle bags and messenger bags.

As a commemorative event to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the founding year of the Republic of China, the Tour de Taiwan 2011 will

be expanded in scale and will take place from March 19 through 28. The upcoming race will be fought over ten legs spanning 1,300km, and the course is expected to be a challenging one that includes steep uphills and downhills.

The 2011 competition kicks off with a 4.5km individual time trial prologue on March 19 and a 60km criterium in Taipei City on the following day, then heads west on Taiwan's western coast. The 1,300-kilometer event finishes with a criterium in Taipei city on March 28.

Invited overseas teams will include the Chinese national team and an Italian team for the first time in the 2011 competition. The Iran Pro

Team, the Asian Tour champion, the Hong Kong Team, the road race champion of the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou, China, the Porche Team, the Australian champion, and the Russian national team will also be participating. Top teams from Japan, Korea, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Europe are also expected to participate. The Tour de Taiwan 2011 is a qualifying event for participation in the 2012 London Olympic Games, so it is expected that each country will send its strongest athletes.

Tour de Taiwan 2011 To Be Fought Over 10 Stages Spanning 1,300km

Electric scooters equipped with lithium-ion batteries are booming in Taiwan due to the subsidiary program of government since 2009. For

assuring the safety and performance of vehicles, every electric scooter must pass the “TES” test. Up to now, six brands of electric scooter have been approved for the national subsidiary program. Meanwhile, more than three brands are under testing.

The Taipei Power Forum will hold at TWTC NANGANG Exhibition Hall Room 401 during Taipei Cycle Show, March 17~19, 2011. The March 17

Electric Two-Wheeler symposium topics focus on the international market and government subsidy policy, business models and battery recycling. Meanwhile, the March 18 and 19 Lithium-ion Power Battery Symposium focuses on the appl icat ions, safety standards, advanced mater ials technologies, and future trends. Simultaneous interpretation is provided in both of English and Chinese. This will be a great opportunity to meet important people from industry, academia, and government or independent research institutes in the field of electric vehicle and lithium batteries.

T aiwan Bicycle Exporters' Association (TBEA) is the leading body to promote exports of Taiwanese-made high quality bicycles and parts. The TBEA is also

taking the initiative in improving the level of R&D and technology in the Taiwan bicycle industry, so that more and more Taiwanese-made products can be sold in IBD markets around the world. Aiming to consolidate the existing export markets and expand sales in the new markets, the TBEA organizes the Innovative Bicycles, Parts and Accessories Competition every year. The association's 2011 competition received a total of 106 product entries from 68 companies.

T he most exceptional products from within the competition’s 13 categories include pedals, stems, wheelsets, as well as other various parts and accessories. In

addition, there will be three special awards: The Best Innovation Award, The Best Practicality Award and The Best Latest Fashion Award. For the self-locking system, the front control part with the core can be separated from the rear. The removable front part also prevents theft, as “Movo” cannot be used while without the front section.

Merida Industry has been selected among 30 entries to the Taiwan Excellence Gold Award 2011 for two products. The 19th Taiwan Excellence Gold Award, organized by the National Trade Bureau of the Economic Affairs Department and administered by TAITRA, attracted a total of 974 products from 381 companies. Kalloy Industrial produces handlebars, stems and seatposts and supplies under three brand names: Guizzo (high-end), Uno (middle class) and Kalloy (popular-priced range). The company’s products are now being made under an innovative concept called “OSC” (Optical Stiffness Construction). According to CEN standards, stem and handlebar should be installed and tested together. In the regular design manufacturers raise the thickness of bar and stem to increase strength; as a result, the bar and stem become heavier. However, OSC (Optical Stiffness Construction) is an innovative concept to evenly distribute stress from bar to stem. It brings lighter weight without reducing rigidity. There are three major procedures to create OSC: “Winglet Faceplate”, “Mesh Fit” and “Variant Thickness”. According to lab experiments and actual riding experience, Kalloy has discovered that a regular faceplace creates enormous bending stress around connection edge. In some cases, it damages high performance lightweight handlebars. In terms of transfer bending stress from handlebar to stem, Kalloy’s innovation team has designed the “Winglet Faceplate” to easily distribute the stress from bar to stem. Six degree tighten angle creates “Mesh Fit” around the bar for more friction force than generated by the conventional clamping lock. Minimum tighten torque creates for maximum engagement force. This system provides safety not only by distributing stress but also by preventing over-tightening. To avoid incorrect installation, the “Mesh Fit” has added a fool-proof design. It helps users to easily recognize the correct installing direction to the faceplate. Based on the positive growth in its performance fi gures, SR Suntour is moving forward with construction of its new plant in Kunshan, described as the company's “largest undertaking in a century”, as well as on plans to go public in 2013.

The upcoming construction of the new plant in Kunshan is timed to coincide with the plant that Giant is building in Kunshan, a facility that will measure 400,000 square meters, and will tie in to decisive progress for SR.

Visitors to the Taipei Int’l Cycle Show see trend-setting products every year. Components giant Shimano is one of the most important trend leaders. The company has been making mountain bike drivetrains for more than three decades, including eight generations of Deore XT, the original off-road drivetrain, and six generations of its fl agship XTR group. Shimano has made a full model change of the XTR for the fi rst time in four years. The complete model change, including an upgrade from 9-speed to 10-speed, is a next generation drivetrain which produces the most optimal performance in co-existence with the latest MTB designs. The new XTR, featuring “dynamic power transfer” and “system optimized stability”, offers a new shifting system for the latest MTBs, a very stable shifting operation even in the toughest riding conditions, and extremely smooth shifting. Another important point of the new XTR is that it uses XG-X chain. The XG-X chain is a 10-speed model, particularly designed for mountain bikes, with excellent durability and mud-free performance. At this year’s Taipei CYCLE, the company will present a wide range of new computers, reflectors and lighting systems as usual. One of its focused products is a new range of safety lights. The Reflex Auto TL-LD570 safety light features three modes for runtime. Two pieces of small alkaline battery allow up to 60 hours of runtime in the Rapid mode, 120 hours in the Long Life mode and 30 hours in the Pulse mode. The 18th participation with a joint European booth in the 2010 Taipei Cycle Show was again very successful. Our European exhibitors did good business and established several new contacts.

Although the initiative started as a member-only bicycle parts & accessories joint European booth, its scope was enlarged. Both participating COLIPED and COLIBI members are granted the member participation fee and also European producers of full bicycles are welcomed on the booth. As such, Hungarian (electric) bicycle producer Gepida made their first appearance on the booth in 2010.

Contrary to what was generally believed a couple of years back, the Taipei Cycle Show keeps on gaining importance. The new NANGANG Exhibition Center, only built 4 years ago, has already become far too small to accommodate all interested exhibitors.

The TCS organisers’ decision to ‘freeze’ the surface (i.e. former exhibitors could not get more surface than they did in 2010) made that registration for 2011 was launched early. Already in September 2010, the European booth was completely sold out. The 2011 joint European booth will host 28 companies, of which 2 new ones: the Italian “Alpina Raggi” and the Dutch “Hesling Products”. Together, our exhibitors will occupy a total of 783 m2.
