Dear Cougar Families,

Autumn reminds us of what is to come - cold snowy days! It is that time of year when the mitten bin comes out of the closet and inventory of last year’s winter wear is taken. As we prepare for the colder weather, please ensure that your child is coming to school with weather appropriate apparel. Mittens, toques and a warm jacket are essential in order to feel cozy and comfortable outside during recesses. Labelling all items with your child’s name, helps us decrease the amount of articles that are sent to the lost and found bin.

École Corinthia Park will now be reporting formative and summative assessments on PowerSchool. This means that you will no longer be getting a paper copy of your child’s report card, but will be able to log into your parent PowerSchool portal and view comments and grades as they are published. Teachers will be adding comments and checking off outcomes as they are achieved, but term grades will not be posted until November 30th. Please visit our school website @ ecps.blackgold.ca for information regarding our ÉCPS Assessment Policy and Foundations. We are excited to be using this new program, as it will allow our parents to have their child’s academic progress at their fingertips.

Thank you to all of you who were able to come out and attend our “Meet the Family Night” in September. It was a huge success and attendance was outstanding! We appreciate our parent partnerships and the ongoing support we receive.

Wishing you a wonderful Thanksgiving and a lovely autumn season.

COUNSELLOR’S CORNER:

Welcome back to another great school year at ÉCPS! Our school counsellors are Mlle. Mugford and Mr. Maron. They oversee whole-school mental health initiatives, connect parents to community services and talk to students when needed. If you have any concerns about your child, please talk to their homeroom teacher first, and they will help you figure out the best plan for your child!

BOOK FAIR:

Our Scholastic book fair is coming, October 23 to 26!

This is a great opportunity to buy books for your

family and to help the library at the same time. We'll

be open until 3:45 p.m. on the Monday and Thursday, but

the book fair will stay open through the evenings until

interviews are finished on the Tuesday and Wednesday.

If you'd like to volunteer, let the librarian know! We

really depend on our volunteers to keep our book fairs

running. Please call: 780-986-8404

Parent/Teacher Conferences :

Will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 24th @ 3:45 - 5:30 p.m. and 6:15 - 8:00 p.m. and

Wednesday, October 25th @ 3:45 - 6:00 p.m.

INTERVIEWS FOR ALL STUDENTS will be arranged ON-LINE ONLY, starting on

Monday, October 16th. Parents are asked to REGISTER AT: http://ecps.schoolappointments.com to

book an appointment. A full registration information sheet is attached to this newsletter. All

interviews will take place in the individual teacher’s classroom and will be set for 12 minutes each.

You must re-register each year. Thank you.

What a School Counsellor Does: What a School Counsellor Does Not:

Work with all students to create a safe, and positive

school environment.

Meet individually with students to do brief, solution

focused counselling.

Collaborate with parents, homeroom teachers and

administration.

Help create links between home, school and outside

services.

Help provide education and resources in regards to

our Mental Health programs (Mind Up and Zones of

Regulation)

Work with only “problem” children

Facilitate any type of therapy

Meet individually with students regularly to do long

term mental health therapy/counselling

Handle discipline or assign consequences

Collaborate with only one person. A team approach

always works best!

under the age of sixteen shall attend school. Educational research is equally clear in its

confirmation that regular and punctual attendance benefit both individual students

and their classmates. In each of the three reporting periods, a student will be permitted

eight excused and/or unexcused lates for the morning or afternoon. Students surpassing

eight lates will be contacted following our order of events (please refer to the school

NUT AWARE SCHOOL & CLASSROOMS:

In response to a couple of inquiries, a reminder of ÉCPS Peanut Allergy Policy is in order. ÉCPS may

have, “Nut Aware” classrooms. If no one in a classroom has a peanut allergy, peanut products are

allowed. However, if a student has a peanut allergy, his/her classroom is designated as a “Nut

Aware” classroom. In “Nut Aware” classrooms, families are discouraged from bringing peanut

products to school, a “Nut Aware Classroom” sign is posted on the door; teachers, parents, &

students work together to develop a reasonable & appropriate plan.

“Nut Free” classrooms cannot be guaranteed because schools cannot ensure that the classroom is completely free of nuts, & they also cannot guarantee other parents will not send peanuts/nuts to school. We believe it’s best to educate students and not give them a false sense of security - we may put them at a bigger risk because they may be complacent. Food allergies need to be respected. It’s a manageable condition - not something of which we need to be afraid.

2017 - 2018 SCHOOL FEES:

Kindergarten: $ 80.00

Recorder: (Grade 4’s only) $ 7.00

Replacement Agenda: $ 8.00

Method of Payment: School fees are due by September 30th, 2017.

We are now asking that all fess are paid on-line. Please refer to the

Acorn package for the online payment system. Any questions please

contact Mrs. Birch at the office.

Power School account.

PARKING IN THE BACK ALLEY:

Neighbours living along the alley west of our school are having difficulty entering and exiting their property at

arrival and dismissal times because of the number of vehicles obstructing their passage. Even though the bylaw

allows one to load/unload passengers for a period not exceeding five minutes, they would appreciate it if you did not

park there at all because of the obstruction. I understand their concern for student safety. We do not have

crosswalks or safety patrollers in the alley, and the congestion will make it difficult for students to enter and exit

the alley safely. I too would like all of our families to use Corinthia Drive; this way our students can cross safely at

the crosswalks with the assistance of our safety patrollers. I’m anticipating your understanding on this issue. If

you wish to speak with me, please stop in at the office.

1. No person shall park a vehicle in an alley unless a sign otherwise permits except for the following purposes:

a) The loading or unloading of goods from a commercial vehicle for a period not exceeding thirty (30) minutes, or

b) The loading or unloading of goods or passengers from a vehicle other than a commercial vehicle for a period not

exceeding five (5) minutes.

2. Notwithstanding Section (a) and (b) above, no person while loading or unloading passengers of goods shall park

a vehicle in such a manner as may obstruct the passage of other vehicles.

BUS LOOP SAFETY/USE OF THE CROSSWALKS:

To prevent injury to members of our school family, single vehicle traffic will not be permitted in the loop between 8:00 a.m. – 8:40 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. – 3:40 p.m. This time represents the highest potential risk to

Students; only school busses plus 15 passenger vans will be authorized in the loop and students who require a disables parking spot at that time. Student pick-up may be made along the north and south sidewalks of

Corinthia Drive. Students and parents are directed to use the loop sidewalk to make their way to the waiting private vehicles. In order to ensure our students’ safety and in keeping with traffic regulations, please make

sure you park at least 5 meters away from the crosswalks. Also, if you are parked on the south side of Corinthia Drive when picking up your child after school, please ensure that he/she uses the crosswalk to cross the street. There is absolutely, NO STOPPING on Corinthia Drive to pick up your child. Our

Safety Patrollers are working diligently to keep your children safe. We appreciate your assistance.
