The iPad BYOD (bring your own devise) program has been so successful many other students in classes from infant area up have opted to tap into this learning tool. In 2014 all grade 5 & 6 students will require iPads and we strongly encourage students in other year levels, in particular Year 4, to also be a part of this program. To assist families in purchasing an iPad, staff and school council have previously researched buying options and the most workable option for families has been either negotiating with an electronics store and having a lay-by or to go through the NIL Scheme via Family Care. The NIL Scheme is a No Interest Loan scheme available to families with a health care card and a fantastic way to support the purchase of an iPad for educational use. It is also a requirement that the device you purchase is an Apple and has Wi-Fi capabilities. Either an iPad or iPad mini can be used. For more information please contact either Mr Johnson, myself or the school office.

With the year fast coming to a close I would like to remind families about our iPad

policy. Over the past 2 years our senior students have been using iPads as a core component of

their learning. The iPad BYOD (bring your own devise) program has been so successful many other

students in classes from infant area up have opted to tap into this learning tool. In 2014 all grade 5

& 6 students will require iPads and we strongly encourage students in other year levels, in

particular Year 4, to also be a part of this program. To assist families in purchasing an iPad, staff

and school council have previously researched buying options and the most workable option for

families has been either negotiating with an electronics store and having a lay-by or to go through

the NIL Scheme via Family Care. The NIL Scheme is a No Interest Loan scheme available to

families with a health care card and a fantastic way to support the purchase of an iPad for

educational use. It is also a requirement that the device you purchase is an Apple and has Wi-Fi

R esearch Study - Children’s Eating Patterns

Our school is participating in a research study

conducted by local community health services looking at

children’s eating patterns. The survey has been approved by

the education department, and will be distributed to parents/

carers of grade 1 and grade 3 students at our school.

Parents/carers can choose to complete the survey

and return it to the school for collection. Return date for the

surveys is tomorrow, Friday 29th November. There is a return

box in the main office.

Thank you for participating in this survey

2 014 School Camps

I mentioned a few weeks ago that I would

encourage you to start planning for the camps program in

2014. Both camps that the year 3 & 4, and 5 & 6 attend will

be held early in the year and to ensure families are not placed

under pressure I would strongly recommend you consider a

payment scheme with the school. For more information please

contact either myself or Mrs James in our school office.

Principal.

Below is a recollection of the Nathalia State School sign origin. This comes from Phil Hawkey, a past student

and School Councillor of Nathalia State/Primary School. We thank him for his recollection and an insight to the

origins of the sign, and his contribution to the school’s history.

Nathalia State School 2060 Sign … recollections of a young student

I realise it is over 50 years since this sign was made and my recollection may not be accurate, however, this

is what I recall:

I commenced school at Nathalia in 1960 as a 4 year old attending what was then known as the Nathalia

Elementary School. Around this time there was a large influx of students to the area, and the need for a Secondary

College was needed. This resulted in a name change for the Higher Elementary School which became Nathalia State

School.

My father (Ralph Hawkey) had become involved in School Council and served as School Council President

for many years.

I recall travelling to Shepparton in the family Holden ‘FB’ towing a wooden trailer with calves to go to the

calf market that was held each Monday. I think this would have been around 1963. After selling the calves we drove

to a wrought iron mongers somewhere in the north of Shepparton … I can’t recall the name though I’m quite sure it

was not the Furphy Foundry. The handmade Nathalia State School sign lay on the floor of the workshop and was not

totally completed when we visited.

My father later hand painted the finished sign at our farm prior to its installation at the north western

entrance gate to the school. I think the school headmaster at the time was Jim Egan. Charlie Judd was a teacher too

at the time.

As a former student and a former School Council President of Nathalia Primary School, I am thrilled to see

the restoration and reinstatement of this sign. The sign forms part of the history of the school and Nathalia

Community.

Phil Hawkey,

Euroa.
