Dear Parents,

THE LEARNING YEAR COMES TO A CLOSE It would appear that every year goes faster and the ‘silly season’

gets ‘crazier’! 2014 has been an extremely productive year in

which our students have generally worked hard and performed

extremely well! I have read all the reports and we can feel proud of

their accomplishments and progress. Our grade six students leave

us to continue their education at secondary college and they go well

equipped to meet the exciting challenges that secondary education

will provide.

We are certainly proud of HEPS! To all our parents who have been involved in classroom activities, The

HEPS Band, HEPS String Group and Choir, Special Religious Instruction, camps and excursions, the

Canteen and just your partnership in your child’s education; thank you for enriching and supporting the

educational experiences of your children and our students.

HEPS is extremely fortunate to have dedicated and hard working staff. Their work and devotion to the

students and school, along with the teamwork is most appreciated both by the school community and me.

STAFF LEAVING

Several of our staff will leave us at the end of this learning year:

Sue Fraser is having a Tree Change in Bairnsdale for the year 2015.

Ben Torney has secured a positon at Regency Park Primary School

Jacqui Greig has secured a position at Birmingham Primary School

Megan Moyle finishes her time at HEPS

As is often the case at HEPS, we are sad to lose such talented staff but wish them every success and

satisfaction as they move onto new challenges and experiences.

REPORTS/PORTFOLIOS

The De cember reports will be distributed to our students on Friday 12th

December. Portfolios which

complement the report will go home with your child on Thursday 18th

December. It has been the practice

over the last few years to include Class and Teacher Placement for the following year. The Class

Placement notice will be included with the report, however you will note that some classes will have the

term TBA (To be announced) as shortlisting and interviews are still underway.

SCHOOL CAPTAINS

Charlie and Brodie have revealed our new captains for 2015 at this morning’s assembly. Congratulations

to Molly and Kyle. I am confident they will lead the school admirably and look forward to working

closely with them next year. Congratulations must also go to the 8 students who presented speeches to

their peers and the staff. They did an extraordinary job and demonstrated that they are leaders in the

making. (You can read some of their speeches attached to this newsletter). In the meantime I wish to

thank Charlie and Brodie for being exceptional captains this year. They have been inspirational in their

leadership: positive, happy and willing to take on any job asked of them. Well done! I will certainly miss

them.

THE PRINCIPAL’S AWARD

Mr Gary Johnson from the Bendigo Bank awarded the Principal’s Award to Charlie, a trophy and her

name engraved on the Perpetual Shield, for the following attributes:

a high standard both in attitude and effort

a noticeable improvement throughout the journey through primary education as a consequence of

consistent commitment to learning

an obvious kindness, understanding and tolerance of peers

always respectful and considerate to all levels of the school community

participation in all school activities with a good attitude

shield. These awards are presented to students displaying high academic standards in both attitude and

achievement or, high sporting standards in both attitude and achievement or exemplary human qualities in

relation to caring for others respectively, as well as

participating in all school activities with a good attitude

demonstrating full commitment to the school ethos,

demonstrating an awareness of the needs of others and,

demonstrating a positive contribution to the school community over a numbers of years.

Stephanie, Tarni and Jessie have fulfilled their respective criteria to the highest standards and are worthy

winners.

HEPS CHRISTMAS CHEER Our students and staff will combine next Wednesday 17

th December for a

Christmas Sing-along. Students are invited to wear their Christmas colours and

decorations on this day; all classes will provide some happy song and we can all

get into the spirit of Christmas. Parents and friends are invited to come and join

in the festivities.

HEPS BAND / STRING GROUP BREAK UP

Congratulations to Miss Ashleigh Yeates (Band) and Mrs Jude Harper(Strings) and their respective

supportive staff for presenting a wonderful Christmas performance last Wednesday evening. Our

parting grade six students also performed a personal favourite. All grade six performers were

acknowledged for their contribution to the Band throughout the years. I’m sure the audience of proud

parents and other family members were suitably entertained.

CLARINET CONCERT

Well done to Miss Yvette Leach who provided her students the opportunity to share their

talents with their parents on Tuesday 2nd

December. Students performed various tunes and

solos/duets. Again it’s a privilege to share our students’ enthusiasm and talents as they learn

to make and enjoy music!

HEPS FUN DAY

Hopefully your child in grades Prep – 4 can participate in the Parents’ Association Disco on Tuesday.

The children can enjoy a disco, and an icy pole, whilst our grade 5 and 6 students can relax and enjoy a

movie in the BER. The remainder of the day will include Christmas and cooperative activities.

GRADE TWO LEARNING AREA

You may have witnessed the convoy of huge trucks with their portion of classroom making their way

onto the property of HEPS on Tuesday. Removal of the classroom

portions were quickly removed and the trucks disappeared as quickly

as they arrived BUT only to have the Module left on the edge of the

embankment. Unfortunately the 25 tonne crane needed to be an 80

tonne crane so the building will stay put until Wednesday when the

right equipment arrives to continue the installation of the building.

We expect our grade two

unit to be ready for use

by the first school day

back in 2015.

END OF SCHOOL YEAR

Thursday 18th

December is the last day of the school year. Dismissal time is 1.30pm. Please note that we

will have an assembly soon after 1.00pm to farewell families and staff that will leave us as well as

express our season greetings and wishes. After the final assembly our grade six students will leave us to

the music of the School Song; children may commence their summer holidays by eating lunch at home.

Kind regards,

Kitty Allard.

Principal.

LIBRARY NEWS – December 2014 LIBRARY STOCKTAKE Our library is currently closed for stocktake. All Library books are currently overdue and must be returned to the Library this week. We still have a large number of books overdue and they need to be returned before the end of the week. It is important that we continue to teach our children the skill of being responsible. Our students learn from their first Library session in Prep, that if they borrow books, it is their responsibility to return them within the allocated time frame. This is a skill that will stay with them for life and be of great benefit. Please continue

to encourage your children to take responsibility for the books they borrow. Thanks in anticipation of your assistance in getting any books back to the Library this week. HOLIDAY READING It is nearly holiday time and I know our students are all looking forward to the summer holidays. It is important to remember that there are very good reasons why our children should continue to read for pleasure over the holiday break. Reading expands our minds and children who read often and widely get better at reading. Reading improves concentration and teaches children about the world around them. It improves a child’s vocabulary and leads to more highly developed language skills. Reading develops children’s imagination, is a great form of entertainment and allows our children to do something other than playing with a computer or IPad screen. Books are a great Christmas present. There are many fantastic new series of books on the market and of course, we can’t forget the old favourites and classics. Do your children a favour, encourage them to read for pleasure on the holidays. They will thank you for it! Thank you again to all those wonderful people who have helped out in the Library this year. A very special thank you to Sue Harwood who has done an amazing job of collating all our Scholastic Book Club order forms. You are a legend! Wishing you all a very safe and happy Christmas. What a musical year it has been at HEPS. As we finish up with final concerts I'd like to say a big congratulations to all the students who have performed with the Band, String Group, Choir and Rock Band this year. It's your

fabulous music making that makes HEPS such a wonderful place to be. Your continued dedication makes ensembles like these possible so well done!!

If you've loved seeing our ensembles perform this year and would like your child to become involved in our

instrumental program, please look through our enrolment form for next year. We have a large variety of

instruments available for tuition and we love to have new students join the music community and eventually, be part of the band! If you'd like more information, please don't hesitate to come and have a chat with any queries.

Have a Merry and Musical Christmas,

Miss Yeates

Learning an Instrument at Heathmont East Primary School

At HEPS, we are surrounded by music with the sounds of instruments and voices often heard through the hallways and in the BER. We are proud to offer instrumental tuition and to have such a strong Band and String program. Studies say that continued music education has wonderful benefits on a child’s development in the early years of their schooling and combining an instrument with the classroom music program is one of the best opportunities to foster a love and passion for music in your child. Music is a place for everyone; it lifts the spirits when we hear it. We encourage all students to give an instrument a try and be part of the band. So, why should your child learn an instrument? Because music is one of those activities that stimulates your whole brain and is great fun to do. Music is a Science – It is exact and specific. It demands exact acoustics. A sheet of music is a graph which

indicates frequencies, volume changes, melody and harmony all at once and with the most exact time control.

Music is Mathematical – It is rhythmically based on the subdivision of time into fractions which must be done instantaneously, not worked out on paper.

Music is a Foreign Language – Most terms are Italian, German or French; and the notation is certainly not English – but a highly developed kind of shorthand that

uses symbols to represent ideas. The semantics of music is the most complete and universal language.

Music is Physical Education – It requires fantastic coordination of fingers, hands, arms, lip, cheek and facial muscles, in addition to the extraordinary control of the

diaphragmatic, back, stomach and chest muscles, which respond instantly to the sound the ear hears. Music is Art – It allows us to take all these techniques and use them to create emotion. That is one thing

science cannot duplicate: feeling and emotion.

If you would like more information on how to enrol in the instrumental program and to be part of the band, come and see me, or leave your contact details at the office. Miss Yeates.

Instrumental Expression of Interest 2015 will rapidly be here and the Instrumental Staff at HEPS are looking forward to an exciting year of music making! This form is for students wishing to learn an instrument in 2015. This is an exciting chance to

join the many enthusiastic music makers already at the school, and eventually be part of the band. Learning music is a wonderful opportunity that is not offered at every primary school. HEPS is very fortunate to have multiple instrumental teachers offering tuition on a variety of instruments. The instrumental teachers at HEPS offer lessons on a number of different instruments including:

- Clarinet - Trombone

- Trumpet - Acoustic Guitar

- Flute - Electric Guitar and Bass

- Saxophone - Drums

- Violin - Cello

- Piano/Keyboard

When students have reached an acceptable standard of playing they are invited to join one of our ensembles. We have a Concert Band, a Rock Band and a Choir who all rehearse on a regular basis and perform regularly throughout the school year. This is a chance for our band members to develop valuable performance skills. Performing for others is a real treat that our band members really look forward to! Entry to the Choir is available to all students from Grade 2 up. Instrument availability: HEPS has a number of woodwind and brass instruments available to hire (sorry, no string instruments) but the supply is limited and parents may be required to purchase or hire an instrument from external sources. Please note that due to the availability of instruments, we cannot always guarantee a first preference for an instrument. If you are interested in purchasing an instrument, we recommend that you speak to one of the Instrumental Staff first as some instruments are of better quality than others. Cost and Lesson Details: Each Instrumental teacher at HEPS works as a sole trader and therefore lesson prices will vary between teachers. More information regarding cost can be found from the relevant instrumental teacher. Lessons vary between 20 and 30 minutes. Most lessons are done on a one to one basis as we believe this creates a more valuable lesson experience. Lessons are run during class time and a timetable is agreed upon at the start of each term. Instrumental lessons are not held during specialist classes. Instrument hire from HEPS is $70 a term for smaller instruments (clarinet, flute, trumpet) and $100 for larger instruments (saxophones, trombone). These hire fees are to be paid at the start of each term along with the lesson fees. HEPS does not have guitars, violins or cellos to hire.

We ask that you fill in 3 preferences for instruments. Please note that due to availability and instrument demand we cannot guarantee your first preference will be honoured. We therefore ask that you write down 3 serious preferences. Student Name______________________________________ Grade in 2014_______________

PLEASE NOTE:

Students from grade 3 and up will be given first preference for lessons. Often, students in the younger grades are not physically big enough to support some of these instruments. In exceptional circumstances, arrangements can be made with consultation from the appropriate instrumental teacher.

In the event that student demand exceeds places available, a waiting list will be formed for that instrument. All applications are processed in order of receipt of the enrolment form, so the sooner your child returns this form, the more likely they are to receive a place in the program.

It is expected that students will practise their instruments and music at home. Instrumental improvement will not happen with lessons alone. If it is deemed a student is not practicing or showing disinterest, they may be removed from the program.

Refunds on lessons will not be given for forgotten instruments or un-notified absences.

We cannot guarantee your first preference of instrument due to high demand in some instruments.

Hired instruments belonging to the school cannot be kept over the Summer break. These instruments must be returned at the end of term 4 for instrument stocktake and yearly servicing.

By signing, I understand that while in the program, my child is subject to the above terms and conditions. I agree to pay instrument hire fees (if hiring) and lesson fees on time. I understand that if fees are not received on time, my child will be removed from the program until full payment is received. I also consent to the Instrumental Staff contacting me via phone, mail or email regarding my child’s attendance, upcoming performances my child may be involved in, and any other business concerning my child’s enrolment in the Instrumental Music Program. MUSIC Hi everybody, I'm here today because l am, if all goes well, going to be your new school captain for 2015. For those people who don't know me, my name is Bella Moran. Since day one of prep I have woken up excited and eager for the day ahead. My development over the six years that I have been at HEPS has probably been the most enjoyable time of my life, and at the same time has not only taught me about maths and reading but social skills as well. Before my school years I could barley say hi to my auntie and now I think I am confident and positive and will never let an idea go to waste. As Ms Frigo says, when I have an idea I don't care if not everyone likes it, but i am confident enough to put my hand up, even if I am the only one. As the oldest I have been repeatedly given the chance to be a leader and role model in my house. This has given me advantages that most of the other candidates will never experience. In grade 4 I was voted JSC and have continued to be a leader my whole life. In grade two I wrote a speech on how I wanted to be school captain, this is not that speech but ever since then it has been my dream to lead the school respectfully and confidentially. But I'm not just making this stuff up, I will be kind to all people I will meet, I will stand up at assembly and talk loud with confidence, I will run the school in a fun and enjoyable way and I will be at school early every morning so I can put the flag up with honour and respect. As we hear in the movies "no one is perfect" but we actually are. Imagine that we are all a species, the Bella species the bob species and so on. Except that we are all highly endangered, because we are all unique. The bella species not only looks exactly like me but also has the qualities that I have, so...I AM A PERFECT BELLA SPECIES. We all have something great to offer to others and I think I would be a great leader, because I respect and appreciate everyone's differences and skills, and believe all the species are perfect and great. When you go on a trampoline, you are always wanting to get as high as you can go, that is me. Even though every night except Thursday's I have something on, I don't finish a homework grid until I am satisfied with my work and have done as much possible. At school I keep jumping higher and higher until the moment when I am able to touch the sky and I am happy with my work. This year I have worked so hard to make it the best it can be, I have promised myself I won't go down without a fight because I feel that I have the potential to continue to make HEPS an even better school. Good luck to all the other candidates. Thank you for your time.

BELLA MORAN School Captain Speech to the Teachers. Good Afternoon teachers. Over the past few years you have taught me lots of strategies and ways to write, so today I am going to take all of those tips that you taught me and put my school captain speech into a persuasive piece of writing. I think you should vote for me as school captain because I have all the values that a school captain should. These include being respectful to all students and teachers in the school, having all of the school values and aiming high all the time. Over the last few years you probably would of noticed that I have all of those values in my personality. Firstly, I think you should vote for me because I respect all of the students, teachers and parents around the school. Since prep I have always been nice and including to all of the students. This is only one reason why you should vote for me.

SCHOOL CAPTAIN SPEECHES

Page 12: PRINCIPAL’S REPORTassets.heathmonteastps.vic.edu.au/media/newsletters... · Thursday December 18th END OF TERM 4 – 1.30pm Dismissal 2015 Wednesday January 28th Staff resume Monday

Secondly, I think I have all the school values in my personality. The school values include confidence, responsibility, organization, persistence and teamwork. All of these things will have to do with setting up assemblies, speaking to our piers at leadership opportunities and being apart of teamwork activities This is another really good reason why I should have that role. Thirdly, I always aim high whether I'm at school competing in sports or doing something for the community. This year I did a cake stall for the cancer council, I was really proud on how much money I raised. I also won a netball grand finale which was a really good team effort for our team. In all of these activities I Aimed High %100. Finally, I would really like to be the 2015 school captain. I think that I am kind and respectful to the HEPS community, I have all the school values in my personality and I always Aim High. So please vote for me as school captain in 2015 and good luck to all the other students going for this role.

LUCY PHILP

School Captain Speech

Hello everyone My name is Molly and I'm up here today to tell you why I would love to be one of the two school captains for 2015. Ever since I understood what school captain was I've been waiting for the opportunity to try and get the role. I have loved my 6 years at HEPS so far and am super excited for my last one. But if I am school captain next year, that would just make it even better. If I do get the role I would take my job very seriously. I would try my hardest and work well with the other school captain. I'm really proud of how my years have gone so far and what I've achieved. Not just in school but out of school as well. I have been playing flute for 3 years now and have taken a place in the school band. Throughout this year I have represented HEPS in many sporting events such as the swimming carnival, athletics and cross country. A team I'm included in out of school is Heathmont Uniting Netball Club. On Saturday we played our grand final against the top team. Fortunately, we won, and everyone played exceptionally well. To be able to play in a team you have to be able to work well with anyone, put in 100% and cooperate. I believe I am able to deal with anyone who wants my help or needs me. I have had some experience with leadership as I have had the role of Green House Vice Captain this year. As well as JSC in grade two. Both of them were still hard work but school captain is a massive jump from just running meetings in JSC to speaking in front of the school and lots of other people. But what I think is that you don't have to have had experience with leadership, you just have to be good at the job you are given. School Captain is very different to other responsibilities in this school. To be the very best I can be, I will have to be organized and believe in myself. If I want to achieve something I have to keep my eyes open and make sure I know exactly what it is I want. To be a school leader you have to be confident. A couple of weeks ago the school leaders went to the Maroondah Festival and helped out with the HEPS Bee Stall. Inviting people in who we'd never met before and talking to them was scary at first. I was really happy with myself as I hadn't really done anything like that before, and for the first time speaking with total strangers I think I went pretty well.

Page 13: PRINCIPAL’S REPORTassets.heathmonteastps.vic.edu.au/media/newsletters... · Thursday December 18th END OF TERM 4 – 1.30pm Dismissal 2015 Wednesday January 28th Staff resume Monday

I also think that our school values are very important. Respect which is one of our school values means a lot. Not only does it mean respect the people around you but make sure you respect yourself. Be true to yourself, don't let anyone change you and don't try to be anyone but yourself because you won't be any good at it. Finally I would love to be your 2015 school captain because I believe I have what it takes to be successful. If I am not elected I will support the school captains as much as I can. Thank you for listening and good luck to everyone else.

CANTEEN VOLUNTEERS 2015 I would like to invite you to volunteer for canteen duty. Only by the assistance of volunteers can the canteen

continue to operate. If possible we would like to have two volunteers for each day. Apart from making the workload lighter it has been found that canteen duty is much more fun

with two or more volunteers! The canteen operates on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and we require volunteers Monday and Wednesday from 10:30am to 2.30pm and Friday from 10.00am to 2.30pm. The school employs a canteen manager but two parent helpers are also required on each canteen day. No special skills are

required and we warmly welcome anyone who can spare a few hours each month or term. If you are unable to commit to a day but would like to be placed on our emergency list, please complete the bottom part of the form below. If you would like to assist us in the canteen, please complete the form below and return to the office as soon as possible. If you would like to work with a friend, please indicate on the form your friend’s name so that we can roster you together. Vicki Allan Canteen Manager
