Silcovert S™

SILCOVERT S is a medium voltage load-commutated current source inverter (LCI) forsynchronous motors that provides speed regularity, monitoring and braking torque

regulation, V/Hz law shaping.

The flexibility of this product means that construction meets with the exact requirements ofthe application. In 12 or 24 pulse configurations the SILCOVERT S gives precise power

control in applications requiring high power and/or speed ratings.

When necessary the same power converter can be used to brake the generator-turbine set, regenerating the breaking power back into the network.

The DC link reactor:

decouples the line bridge(rectifier) from the loadbridge (inverter). Theysmooth and reduce theripple in the direct currentflowing in the intermediatecircuit between the rectifierand the inverter bridges.

Thyristors:

grouped in an array called a stack (4 – 8thyristors), the number that are connectedin series is selected based on themagnitude of the prospective peakvoltage.Above is a typical 3-stacks 8-thyristorspower module. The stack auxiliarydevices include snubber capacitors &resistors, firing board, firing high insulationtransformer.

Power Converter:

the rectifier and inverteruse as a standard a 6-pulse three-phasethyristors controlled bridge,fitted in air-cooled orde-ionized water-cooledheat sinks.

Air Cooling for power up to 10000 kW

The air is drawn into the cubicle by the converter fan and ejected from the top or carried out by means of airducts. Air forced cooling system it’s a very reliable way of cooling semiconductors devices, with minimalmaintenance costs. NIDEC ASI mounts a special device called anemometer on the top of the converterpanel, the converter is tripped if the fan is faulted or the air is not circulating.

Water Cooling for power above 10000 kW

De-ionized water is used to remove the heat from the thyristors and snubber resistors to a heat exchanger(water-to-water or water-to-air). The converter’s primary cooling system is a closed-loop system with awater tank. The de-ionized water circulates from the pump through the heat exchanger to the converterbridge and returns to the pump. In most application also the DC link reactor is water-cooled. The watercooling system is made up of the following components:

• Pump-motor group• Tank• Deionization system• Conductivity measuring system• Filter• Exchanger• Instruments• Hydraulic Connections• Cooling System Control

The operator interface (SSDTERM)enables the operator to perform quick andefficient analysis on the digital regulator

status.

Display – makes up of the principalelectrical quantities (line and motorcurrent/voltage, speed set-point, speedfeedback, etc.), these same quantities arealso displayed as digital values.

Scope – is an oscilloscope function thatenables the real time display of selectedanalog and digital variables.

Black Box: enables the operator toexamine the status of up to 8variables (selected parameters)before and after a certain event (ex.Trip).

Contents can be saved as ASCIIfile, and exported for furtherexamination and remotetransmission. (Also refer to theOscilloscope function)

Transformer and temperature monitoringVisual display of the motor and transformers windingstemperature.A traffic light for each motor and transformer displays thestatus of protection (green means normal operation, yellow – warning and red – trip).

Event-Alarm - Trip ReportOne of the most important functions of HMI systems is the alarm'smanagement recall.

The basic goals of this function are as follows:1. Detect alarm conditions reported by basic automation PLCs2. Notify any new alarm condition to the operators3. Allow the operator to recognize (acknowledge) the new alarms.

The alarms' summary page shall allow following functions:1. Presentation of alarms in form of list in chronological order.2. Alarms are in different colours according to priorities.

All alarms are date and time summarised on the summary page.

Oscilloscope FunctionOperator settings can be viewed through this function allowing avisual assessment of drive functionality and status.
