The first references of electric ship propulsion date back to the Twenties. One of the most significant historical examples is represented by the Normandie.
When launched in 1932 Normandie was the largest and fastest ship in the world, with novel design and lavish interiors.
This success was also due to our steam turbo electric propelled, 4 turbo electricengines (160.000 hp – 200.000 hp max) it reached 32.2 (59.6 Km/h)
maximum speed.

Electric ship propulsion is becoming more and more common in several fields ofapplication, offering the following advantages:
• optimisation of the power generation system• reduction of noise levels• reduction of space requirements• reduction of manteinance requirements and costs
Thanks to these benefits the range of application of electric propulsion for various types ofships is steadly growing in terms of quality and quantity.

12 pulses configuration
24 pulses configuration
For those big vessels where propulsion powers ranging from 13 to 24 MW per shaft line arerequired using synchronous motors, the most applied power converter type is the load
commuted inverter (LCI), or synchroconverter. The synchroconverter can be supplied with12 or 24 pulse configuration depending on the ship’s electric network characteristics.

The Saipem 7000 was conceived in the mid 1980sas a multipurpose offshore oil platform installationvessel that would be able to install very large oilproduction platform decks (known as integrateddecks) as well as the decks' supporting structures(known as jackets) using its two very large fullyrevolving cranes.
It would also be able to support the offshorecompletion of the platform by providing hotel andworkshop facilities for large construction crews.Saturation Diving facilities would support subseaconnection work. The vessel's size and semi-submersible form would allow it to operate inworse weather conditions than smaller andconventionally shaped vessels.
