Raymond Anum Drama Schools
Wewerethrilledtohear thatanotherofour former studentshasgained places atmultipledramaschools.
RaymondAnumlefttheschoolinthesummerof2014,andhasjustreceivedofferstostudyactingattheRoyal
AcademyoftheDramaticArt(RADA)andtheBristolOldVic.Ifheacceptsaplaceatthelatter,hewilljoinfellowalumnusTaheenModak,whobeganhiscourselastSeptember.
DuringhistimeatIsleworth&Syon,Raymonddemonstratednotonlyalotofpotentialbutalsoathirstanddrive
forsuccess.Theroadtotheseoffershasnotbeeneasy,butthroughperseveranceanddedication,henowhas
thechancetofulfilhisdreamofbecominganactor.Havingwitnessedaseriesofoutstandingperformances
duringhistimeatIsleworth&Syon,weallknowthatRaymondhasabrightfutureaheadofhim,andwecannot
waittoseewhereheendsup.
RaymondgaveoneofhismanyexcellentperformancesduringthisBTECPerformingArtspiece,
whichearnedhimaDistinction*.
Tom Sherriff - Sky Sports Apprenticeship
WeweredelightedtoreceivenoticethatTomSherriff(Year13)hasgainedaplaceonahighly-
prestigiousinternshipatSkySportsfollowingtheconclusionofhisstudieshereatIsleworth&
Syon.
The“FastForwardScheme”offersparticipantsthechancetogainvaluableworkingexperienceforayearinSky
Sports,workingacrossavarietyofshowssuchasSkySportsNews,MondayNightFootball,andothersporting
events.Itwashighlyselective,withonlyonepersonpickedfromthousandsofapplication,andincludedan
intensefour-stageapplicationprocess.TheschemewillofferTomthechancetoexperienceanumberofdifferent
aspectssuchassound,script-writing,loggingandediting.
Will Millett – Royal College of Music
WeweredelightedtoreceivenoticethatWillMillett(9D)hasbeen
accepted into the Royal College of Music junior department,
starting every Saturday in September. This is an extremely
prestigiousopportunity,ashewillbegiventheopportunitytostudy
compositionandmusicaltheory,aswellasplayingintherenowned
RoyalCollegeofMusic ensembleandhavingone-to-one tuition
fromspecialistteachers.
Welookforwardtohearingmoreaboutthisnextyear.

Brilliant Club
Thisyear’sBrilliantClubprogrammeshavenowconcluded,withalargecohortofstudentstakingpartinYears
7-10duringtheschoolyear.Thisisthethirdyearthatwehaveruntheprogrammeinschool,withagroupof
Gifted&TalentedstudentsreceivingtutorialsfromaPhDstudentonacertaintopic,beforewritinganessayat
akeystageabovetheircurrentlevel.
Thestandardofworkhasbeenextremelyhighfromallthestudents.Theessaysaremarkedusingtheuniversity-
gradingsystem,withgradesrangingfromaFirsttoa2:2.Anextremelyimpressive17studentsachievedaFirst
fortheiressays;thosestudentsarepicturedbelow.

Holocaust Speaker: George Vulkan
OnWednesday28April,wewereprivilegetowelcomeGeorgeVulkanintoschool.MrVulkanisasurvivorofthe
Holocaust,andcametogivehistestimonytothewholeofYear9inapoignanthour-and-a-halftalkintheschool
hall.
Theboyswereveryrespectfulandattentivethroughout,andthereweresomefantasticquestionsaskedduring
thequestion-and-answersessionafterhistalk.Wefeelthattheseeventsareveryimportantasameansof
contextualisingstudents’classroomstudies,aswellasgivingthemaninsightintotheatrocities.
MrVulkanwithallofthestudentswhoaskedquestionsduringthetalk.
Year 13 Leavers’ Assembly
OnThursday26May,wesaidgoodbyetoourYear13studentswiththeirLeavers’AssemblyintheStudyRoom.
Itwasapoignantsend-off,mostlyledbythestudents.Oneofthehighlightswasaverymemorablespeechby
KieranJaswal,whichrecalledmanyhilariousincidentsfromovertheyears.DeputyHeadBoyAliEtaproduced
avideomontagefulltothebrimwithmemories – studentsparticularlyenjoyedseeinghowfarthey’vecomesince
Year7.TheassemblyendedwithMrDoyletellingthestudentstomakesuretheyhavenoregretsinthevery
shorttimetheyhaveleftatIsleworth&Syon.
It’sbeenanabsolutepleasurewatchingthestudentsdevelopintomature,considerateandconfidentyoungmen
andwomen,andwearesurethateachandeveryoneofthemhasabrightfuture.Welookforwardtohearing
whatthey’vebeenuptointheyearstocome!
Year 11 Leavers’ Assembly
Thefollowingday – Friday27May – sawthefinalformalassemblyofcompulsoryeducationforourYear11
students.Overthecourseoftheirfiveyears,therehavecertainlybeensomebumpsintheroad,butitwastruly
lovelytoheartheirmemoriescourtesyofrepresentativesfromeachform,aswellasstaff.Followingthepastoral
andacademicawards,MrLightfootconcludedwithaspeechentitled ‘LifefromthePointofViewofaGamer’,whichgaveYear11somemeaningfuladvicethroughtheprismofvideogames.WewishallofourYear11the
verybestinwhatevercomesnext,bethatourownSixthform,college,ortheworldofwork.

Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme
TheschoolhasoperatedtheDukeofEdinburgh’sAwardschemeformanyyearsnow;indeed,wearetheonly
stateschoolintheboroughtoofferthefullGoldaward.OnTuesday10May,anumberofIsleworth&Syon
studentsvisitedtheCivicCentrefortheirPresentationEvening,pickinguptheirBronzeandSilverawards.We
weredelightedtoalsoseeJoeFormby(Year13)pickuphisGoldawardattheevent,atestamenttohishard
work. Almostaweeklater,onMonday16May,MrFergusonwasinvitedtoaveryspecialDukeofEdinburgh’s
AwardceremonyatBuckinghamPalace,whichcommemoratedthe60thanniversaryofthescheme.
Lastweekend,ourBronzegroup(53Year9students)wentouttoBoxhillfortheirpracticeexpedition,whichwas
agreatsuccess.Theboyswillusewhattheyhavelearnedwhenitcomestotheassessedexpeditionduring
WiderLearningWeek.Theirtrainingcontinuesnexthalf-term.Thankyoutothestafffortheirsupport,including
MrWest,MrAdams,MrMatthews,andSteveTurner.
Junior Maths Challenge (CLA)
OnThursday28April,60studentsinYears7and8tookpartintheUKMTMathsChallenge.Thischallengeis
organisedannuallybytheUKMathsTrustandisdesignedtostimulatestudentinterestinmathematicsthrough
multiple-choicepapers.
Itwasapleasuretosee24studentsachieveamedal – 40%ofthecohort!Thisisatestamenttotheboys’hard

Geography Field Trip (CLA)
FromMonday16 – Wednesday18May,MissLawlerandthegeographydepartmenttook74Year10studentsto
StudlandBayforafieldtripthatformspartoftheirGCSEcoursework.Onthefirstday,studentswalkedfrom
StudlandBeachtoOldHarry'sRocks,afive-and-a-halfmileroundtrip.Atthetopoftherock,theboyslookedat
landmarks,focusingoncoastallandformsandarrangements.Tuesdaywasaparticularlylongday,asstudents
surveyed three beaches, discussing the conflicts between management and stakeholders. Students were
responsibleforsurveyinglocalresidentsfortheiropinionstoo.
Itwasagreattrip,withstudentsreallythrowingthemselvesintothefieldwork.Hopefullythiswillbeardividends
whentheircourseworkmarksarereleased!
Debate Mate Cup (VCO)
OurDebateMatestudentshavehadanotherverysuccessfulyear;asmentionedinthepreviousnewsletter,they
placedinthetop40ofsecondaryschoolinthecountry.ThefinalcompetitionoftheyearwastheDebateMate
Cup,whichtookplaceonWednesday20AprilattheUniversityofWestminster.Theboysperformedverywell,
witheachof the threeteamswinning at leastonedebate.Theboyswerealsogivenan award for the top
attendanceinLondonschools – afantasticachievement.Wehopethattheboyspushonnextyearandcontinue
todeveloptheirskills.
Ridgeway Road Toucan Crossing
WorksinstallinganewtoucancrossingontheA4GreatWestRoadjunctionwithRidgewayRoadbeganinthemiddleofApril,andarescheduledtotakenineweeks.Duringthistime,werecommendthatstudentscrossthe
A4safelybyusingtheexistingcrossingpointslocatedateitherWoodLaneorThornburyRoad.

WeweredelightedtoreceivenoticethatMichaelJarra(Year11,right)receiveda
JackPetcheyAwardonThursday24MayatWaterman’sTheatre,Brentford.
TheawardwaspresentedforhiscoachingworkwiththeFelthamWarriorsbasketball
team.Welldonetohim – itistrulyoutstandingtoseestudentsmakinganimpactinthewidercommunity.

TheP.E.departmenthavebeeninvolvedinnumeroussuccessesthisterm.Theseinclude:
OurIndoorAthleticsteamfinishedascountychampionsandprogressedtocompeteintheLondonYouth
Games – theveryfirstschoolteamtoeverdothis.Afterafantasticperformance,theyfinishedsixthoverall
– aphenomenalachievement!
TheYear8AthleticsteamtookpartintheBoroughSuper8s – acompetitionwhichbringstogetherallthe
boroughschoolsforeightathleticevents.Theboysgaveiteverythingtheyhadandfinishedoffasthe
winners,meaningthattheywereboroughchampions.
OurYear8Cricketboyscontinuetogofromstrength-to-strength,progressingtotheMiddlesexIndoor
Boroughfinal,wheretheynarrowlyfinishedrunners-up.
AtKeyStage4,ourYear10Cricketers(picturedbelow)competedintheMcKinseyCupboroughround
eight-a-side.HavingbeatenFelthamschooltwiceandHammersmithonce,theboyshadtohaveabowl-
offwithHammersmithtoseewhowouldprogress.ArslaanAhmedwastheIsleworth&Syonhero,taking
theonlywicket!Wenowprogress tothecounty final, takingplaceatNorth LondonCricketClubon
Wednesday6July.
Theextra-curricularparticipationthistermhasbeenanexcellent65%higherthanlastterm.Thefull
timetableofPEenrichmentactivitiesisavailablethroughthewebsite.
OurYear12BTECSport,inassociationwithSportImpact,havebeengoingintomultiplelocalprimary
schools, running sport and physical activity sessions during curriculum time. These sessions have
allowedtheboystodevelopskillstheyhavepickedupintheirownlessons.
Thenewstate-of-the-artpendulumswinginggoalpostswereinstalledthishalfterm.Alongwiththenew
floodlights,the3Gastroisnowanexcellentfacility,whichwillbeavailableforletting.Theboyshave
takentothenewgoalsverywell.

extramilethroughtheirhomelearningandotherindependenttasks.Westronglybelievethatitisimportantfor
parents/carerstobecontinuallyawareoftheworkbeingsetforyourchildren;tothatend,throughoutthisschoolyearwehavebeenuploadinghome learningsheets forYears7-9 totheschoolwebsite.Thesesheetsare

Itisasimpleandclearexpectationthatstudentsbring“basic”schoolequipmenttoschoolonadailybasis,thus
enablingthemtobeready for learning.Equipmentincludespens,pencil,ruler,ascientificcalculator,specialist
mathematicsequipmentandawaterbottle.Alloftheseitemsshouldbeorganisedwithinasuitably-sizedschool
bag,whichshouldalsocontainareadingbook.Pleaseensurethatyourson/wardorganiseshisschoolbagthe
eveningbeforeaschool dayand isthereforereadyto learn.Thereare ‘noexcuses’forstudentsnotbeing
preparedforschool.
Independent Learning
Oneofourkeyprioritiesfor2015-16isafocusongreaterindependentlearning
from students. This is not solely about home learning, however, and
parents/carers can help the school to promote independent learning by
encouragingtheirchildto:
1. Makedecisions(acceptthateffortisrequiredinordertobesuccessful;
self-checktheirwork,acceptadvicewithoutperceivingitascriticismand
workwithoutalwaysseekingapproval;respondtotheteacher’swritten
feedback)2. Learnhowtothink(questiontheteacherabouttopicsaswellastheir
peers,takeriskswiththeirlearning,useinitiative,beopen-mindedand
offersolutions,re-visitactivitiesortopicswithoutpressure)
3. Workinasystematicandorganisedmanner(theypossessschoolbasic
equipment;theyareresourcefulandmanagetheirtimeeffectively)
4. Readfor20minuteseveryevening.

Appearance Policy – Holiday Reminders
Please remember the requirements of the schoolwith regards toappearance, in particular tohair.This is
especiallypertinentovertheholidayperiod,whenstudentscanbetemptedtogoforastylethatdoesnotconform
to school requirements. Our policy is clear with regard to hair, and all of our students are aware of the
requirementsthroughrepeatedremindersinassembliesandintutortime.TheextractfromourAppearance
Policyisincludedbelowasareminder:
Hairshouldbeconventionalinstyleandinlength(abovethecollarandnoshorterthanablade2)and
shouldnotbeartificiallycoloured,“spiked”orcontainstylingproducts.Excessivelyshavenhair(belowa

Key Stage 3 Homework Pilot
TheKS3homeworkpilotisbeingextendeduntiltheremainderoftheschoolyear.
Evidenceshowsthattheregularandeffectivecompletionofhomeworkcontributes
toanadditionalsixmonthsofstudentprogresseveryyear.Giventhis,studentsin
Years7-9willcontinuetoberewardedwithHomeworkPositiveseverytimeahome-
learningactivityissubmittedwhichisofan"acceptablequality".
An"acceptablequality"relatestobothcontentandpresentation,andissolelyatthe
discretion of the class teacher. Students who produce outstanding pieces of
homework will receive Homework Commendations. Many of these outstanding
piecescanbeviewedonTwittermarkedwiththehashtag#IsleworthHomework.
Pleasecontinuetocheckthestudydiaryofyourson/wardfortheirhome-learningactivities;thesearealsoposted
ontheschoolwebsite.Detentionsforfailingtosubmithomeworkhavebeenphasedout;instead,parents/carers
willbecontactedbyletterwhenstudentsregularlyfailtosubmitwork.
Car Parking – Before and After School
Wewouldbegratefulifparents/carerswouldcarefullyconsiderwhetherornottheirchildrenrequirepickingup
fromschooleachday.Theroadsaroundschoolcangetcongested;droppingofforcollectingstudents,ateither
endoftheday,doesaddtothiscongestion.Itcanbefrustratingforourneighbourstocopewiththeaddedtraffic
andsometimesthewaycarsareparkedisillegal.Thezig-zaglinesoutsidetheschoolgatesareinplaceforthe
safetyofourstudents,anddoubleyellowlinesalsoexisttoensurebettertrafficflow.TheLocalAuthorityhasan
EnforcementOfficerwhoattendstheschooltoissuefixed-penaltieswhererequired,andthishasourfullsupport.
Inaddition,parents/carersmustnotdriveontotheschoolgroundstopickuptheirchildren,unlessthereare
exceptionalcircumstances.Walkingorcyclingtoschoolisafarhealthieroptionforyourchildren,sopleasegivethisoptionseriousconsideration.

Asmallnumberofboyshaverequireda reminder
aboutsafecycling,especiallyonthewayhomefrom
schoolintheafternoon.Allstudentsshouldhavea
cycle helmet aspartof theircyclewearand they
must also ensure that some care is taken whencyclingdownthehilltotheLondonRoad.Again,we
