As friends and family stayed warm and pre-pare for the upcoming springtime break, for-mer Yorkton cadet and Army Reservist Lieu-tenant Cole Janett, 24, of Bredenbury, took to the frigid spring prai-ries of Shilo, Manitoba, in the rolling Carberry Sandhills, to fi ght with 350 other Reservists from across Saskatch-ewan, Manitoba and North-west Ontario. From April 26 until May 3 Reservists from 38 Canadian Brigade Group (38 CBG) formed up in Shilo to take part in the ultimate war fi ghting adventure – Exercise Bison Warrior 2014. Colonel Ross Ermel, Commander of 38 Ca-nadian Brigade Group, says, “We rely on our ‘Citizen soldiers’ – they have always answered our Nation’s call, per-forming valiantly on domestic operations such as the Manitoba Floods of 2011 and in Afghanistan. Exercise BISON WARRIOR’s aim is to hone our war fi ghting skills.

MS helpavailable Saskatchewan multiple scle-rosis (MS) patients now have access to a new oral medica-tion. Beginning May 1 the province began providing cov-erage of Tecfi dera (dimethyl fumarate) to treat adult MS patients with relapsing-remit-ting MS who meet certain cri-teria. “MS patients and specialists have been asking for coverage of this medication and our gov-ernment is pleased to make it more accessible to those who need it,” Health Minister Dustin Duncan says. “This option does not require injec-tions, and has the potential to improve the quality of life for MS patients by reducing the number of relapses they ex-perience and slowing the pro-gression of the disease.” MS is a neurological disease that impairs or destroys the function of nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. About 3,700 Saskatchewan people are affected – a higher per cap-ita rate than anywhere else in Canada. “The MS Society is very pleased with the news that Saskatchewan has givenpeople living with MS in our province access to another op-tion to manage the effects of their disease,” MS Society’s Saskatchewan Division Com-munication Manager Virginia Harper adds.

Skills such as leadership, communica-tion and teamwork are the backbone of the military and lead to success in all op-erations both at home and abroad. Lt Janett has been part of the Cana-dian Armed Forces for four years. Asked why he joined North Saskatchewan Regiment, he commented, “embrace the ‘suck!’.” He also said what he looked for-ward to during the exercise – “practicing my trade!” 38 CBG deployed more than 500 citi-zen soldiers to Afghanistan since 2006,
and many have served in various other international and domestic operations. To maintain their morale and readiness, these experienced personnel must be challenged by relevant, progressive, and exciting training events. To learn more about 38 CBG and the Army, visit: www.army.gc.ca/en/38-cbg/index.page The Canadian Armed Forces are al-ways looking for strong men and women from Saskatchewan who want to chal-lenge themselves in a meaningful part-time mission. They will experience this level of training and adventure.

DONATION PRESENTED – The SaskTel Pioneers Yorkton Club recently made small cushions and donated them to the Yorkton and District Nursing Home to be used by the residents there. The purpose of the pillows is to give the patients a soft resting spot for their ears or neck. Pictured above is Pioneer member Adeline Markham presenting the pillows to Charlene Malayney the palliative care coordina-tor for the Sunrise Health District.
Saskatchewan’s big game draw offi cially opened on May 1. Hunt-ers must have their big game draw applications completed before mid-night of May 31, 2014 when the draw closes. “The big game draw is a much-anticipated event each year and continues to grow in popularity,” Environ-ment Minister Ken Che-veldayoff comments. “The number of hun-ters applying for Sas-katchewan’s most favorable hunting oppor-tunities has increased signifi cantly over the last 10 years. Hunters are advised to review all available draw opportu-nities and past draw re-sults to assist in making their selections. Good luck to all applicants.” All hunters apply-ing for the draw are re-quired to provide their Hunting, Angling and Trapping Licence iden-tifi cation number (HAL ID). Registration for a HAL ID is a one-time requirement; if hunters have purchased a 2013 or 2014 angling, hunt-ing or fur licence, or ap-plied for the 2013 draw, they already have been assigned a HAL num-ber. Hunters can get their HAL ID, and apply for a licence several ways: • online at www.sas-katchewan.ca/hunting anglinglicences;
• through private li-cence issuers, ministry offi ces and select provin-cial park offi ces; or • by phone at 1-855-848-4773 between 8 am and 9 pm. Hunters requiring as-sistance with their iden-tifi cation can call 1-855-848-4773 to ensure they do not create a second account. Licences will not be mailed to successful ap-plicants. All awarded big game draw licences will be available through the automated licence sys-tem on the individual hunter’s HAL account. Hunters are reminded that wildlife manage-ment zones (WMZs) now
follow easily identifi able features such as provin-cial highways, munici-pal roads or major water bodies where possible. Available WMZs, sea-son dates, bag limits and quotas may have changed from previ-ous years. Big game draw participants are encouraged to famil-iarize themselves with the new map and 2014 Saskatchewan Resident Big Game Draw Supple-ment before they submit their applications. The 2014 Saskatche-wan Resident Big Game Draw Supplement and the new WMZ bound-ary map are available at www.saskatchewan.ca/hunting.

“With many new MS drugs coming on the market and offering a variety of ways they can be administered, we are happy the Ministry of Health continues to be responsive in the pub-lic listing of these new therapies. As always, we encourage all people living with MS to con-sult with their physi-cian to fi nd the course of treatment most ap-propriate for them.” Saskatchewan is the fi rst province among pan-Canadian Pricing Alliance (PCPA) mem-bers to provide cover-age. Quebec, which is not part of the PCPA, also covers the drug. Sas-katchewan led the nego-tiations which recently resulted in a pricing agreement between the drug manufacturer and provinces and territo-
ries. The PCPA capi-talizes on the combined negotiating power of provinces and territo-ries to obtain the best value for Canadians. Tecfi dera was approved by Health Canada for use by MS patients in 2013. MS patients seeking more information are encouraged to talk with their physicians, or call the Saskatchewan MS Drugs Program at 306-
655-8400. The amount a patient would pay per prescription will be de-termined by their level of coverage under the Saskatchewan Drug Plan. Information on the Drug Plan’s Special Support Program is available online at www.health.gov.sk.ca/special-support or at 1-800-667-7581 (toll free) or 1-306-787-3317 (Regina).
Help for Sask. MS patients
Ed, my neighbor next door, can be severely opinionated about any-thing and everything. He has more things that he considers just plain wrong than an official rule book. I think Ed missed his calling as a farmer, as I believe that he should have been a persecut-ing attorney. We all get carried away and act as both judge and jury occasionally, but Ed likes to do it 93% of the time. The other day I fool-ishly mentioned to Ed that my car and van both need to go to the car wash. Ed, instantly, said that going to the car wash is a waste of money. I should just wait for it to rain. When I asked Ed why he always has his truck looking like it came out of the showroom, he said that his truck was worth something. Since I do not have trucks, the case is closed for Ed, as he considers them junk and unwor-thy of serious atten-tion. I have learned through the years that Ed has countless ver-dicts about the value of endless things. In Ed’s mind, many things are just plain wrong and should never happen. Here are a few of those things: meals that do not include potatoes
and meat; men with either a pony tail or various colors of hair; opera and classical music; dogs in coats and boots; big cities with eight lane traffic; men who don’t drink alcohol or swear; and wearing a suit to wed-dings and funerals that you are forced to attend. These things and oth-ers can ruin Ed’s day, and violate his sense of right and wrong. Ed has a passion in his life for what is wrong with others and this world. He is not a lukewarm kind of guy, as he tends to run hot or cold about what he sees. Ed clearly says what he thinks and is not a person of self-doubt. It is so simple to Ed that if you disagree with him, then you are wrong. He claims that he doesn’t know every-thing, but he knows what is best in his mind, and if it is right for him it right for everyone. If he is served warm beer or cold cof-fee, Ed will spit them
out, and he says that others should also. I once said to Ed that he had a God complex, and his response was that I was wrong and didn’t know what I was talk-ing about. Maybe if you feel others are consis-tently wrong you do have a God Complex. Self-awareness, that we are not always right is a gift from God. What we think, believe and do can be settled in our minds, as good and right, but perhaps it is not so with God or other folks. As hard as it is to believe, no one but God is right all the time. The Bible says that we are to clothe ourselves with humility toward one another because God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. God worked in humil-ity as his son was born in a stable and died on the cross. The more one draws close to God’s word the less ready they become in being a judge and jury towards others.

With the warmer weath-er, now is the ideal time to bring new life to home décor. Whether your out-door items are looking worn and weathered… or your indoor spaces need a pop of colour… spray paint is the perfect solution. To ensure your furniture update goes flawlessly, fol-low these few tips from the experts at Krylon, the nation’s leader in spray paint.Prep Properly
Surface preparation is extremely important and the best predictor of how long your finish will last. The goal is to make your surface as smooth as pos-sible to ensure the new paint adheres well. Remove any loose rust or paint by lightly sanding. Next, clean surfaces with soap and water or degreaser, if nec-essary. Rinse and let your surface dry completely. Your surface should now be clean, dull and dry.To Prime or Not to Prime
Primer prepares bare metal, wood, canvas or other materials to create a smooth surface for paint. It also seals the surface to help smoothen out blem-ishes, increase spray paint adhesion and improve cor-rosion resistance.
While priming is a criti-cal step, research shows that consumers only use a primer 50 percent of the time. For high-quality results with fewer steps, look for a product that says no priming is required.Choosing the Right Product
It is important to choose the product that meets the needs for your substrate – as well as your style.Plastic/Laminates
With the popularity of ready-to-assemble furni-ture made of laminates or the many plastic storage
items, these surfaces are prime targets for painting. However, without the right product, your project could turn out less than desir-able.
“Most consumers don’t realize that not all plastics are the same,” said Denise Patterson, Krylon product manager. “In fact, most spray paints on the market will not adhere to the most popular plastics found in furniture, toys and storage. Krylon’s new Dual
Superbond spray paint offers a unique formulation that promises quality adhe-sion to 85 percent of plas-tics, as well as hard-to-ad-here surfaces, such as melamine and laminates.”Metal
For metal surfaces – especially those that are exposed to outdoor ele-ments – it is important to choose a product that pro-vides rust protection.
“Many products that claim rust protection only
work when used with an additional primer,” says Patterson. “Using a combi-nation product, such as Dual Superbond Paint + Primer ensures that all sur-faces will achieve superior rust protection without a multi-step process.”Wood
Choosing the best spray paint for wood is depen-dent on the finish, use and location of your surface. A general purpose spray paint, such as Krylon
ColorMaster, is an ideal choice for wood. This new product offers the widest colour selection with near-ly 70 colours and finishes.Spraying Specifics
Before you spray, shake your can for about two minutes. Next, hold the can 6 to 8 inches away from the surface and use several thin coats of spray paint instead of one thick coat. Begin and finish your spray pattern off the object using an even side-to-side
motion, releasing the tip at the end of each pass. Try to overlap your spray pattern by about one-third with each pass.
As you prepare to paint new life into your home décor, these few tips and tricks will ensure your project is painless and pret-ty… for years to come. For more painting tips or infor-mation on Krylon prod-ucts, visit www.krylon.ca.
