HOLIDAY SPIRIT – In the spirit of giving, the Yorkton Nursery School Cooperative children, staff, and families, collected non perishable food items to donate to the Salvation Army. Area rinks get needed funding boosts For the second consecu- tive year, hundreds of lo- cal Saskatchewan rinks have taken advantage of the Community Rink Af- fordability Grant. The Government of Sas- katchewan announced it invested nearly $1.6 mil- lion in 520 facilities in 362 communities through the grant. “Local rinks provide sig- nicant sport and recre- ational opportunities to people living in both small towns and city neighbour- hoods,” Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Kev- in Doherty comments. “That’s why we promised to support rinks in the 2011 election, and that’s why we’re happy to invest in them through the Com- munity Rink Affordability Grant for the second year in a row. Rinks enhance the vibrant quality of life we enjoy here in our grow- ing province.” The Saskatchewan Parks and Recreation Associa- tion administered and de- livered the grant. “The amount of positive feedback the Saskatch- ewan Parks and Recre- ation Association has received since rst deliv- ering this grant in 2012 is overwhelming,” Saskatch- ewan Parks and Recre- ation Association Presi- dent Mike Powell adds. “We’ve heard from people directly involved with lo- cal rinks that the funds are helping. They’re al- lowing rink owners to hire caretakers, keep the rinks open longer, and repair and upgrade facilities.” The $2,500 per indoor ice surface grant helps communities, non-prots, schools, rink boards and First Nations communi- ties keep their rinks open and running efciently. With a brand new year starting, it’s a great time and a wonderful oppor-tunity to stand back and ask yourself: “What can I change or do better in my life to improve my health?”

IDENTIFY THE PROBLEM

Perhaps you would like to quit smoking, drink more water, clean up your diet, overcome a health challenge, cleanse or exercise regularly. Whatever you want to accomplish, identify the problem as specifi cally as you can. Half of the solu-tion to any problem is to defi ne it, so that it can be resolved properly.

BURN YOUR BRIDGES

Make a solid com-mitment to yourself to achieve your goals and do not turn back. If neces-sary, get rid of the things that allow you to give up easily. For example, if you are going to quit smoking, throw out all the ashtrays, matches and lighters. Have you heard the sto-ry about the general who took his army by ship to conquer another country? After seeing the enemy, his soldiers thought they would lose the battle and wanted to return home. However, the general had ordered all their ships to be burned and told his army that there was no choice... They had to win!

BELIEVE IT’S POSSIBLE

In order to do some-thing, you must believe you can succeed. Napo-leon Hill, a great suc-cess philosopher, stated: “Whatever the mind of man can conceive and be-lieve, it can achieve.” This quote has helped count-less individuals achieve their goals. Tell yourself you can do it! Do not allow “I can’t” to be a part of your vocab-ulary, at all! It is very im-portant to have positive thoughts. Do not enter-tain negative thoughts, whatsoever! You have not failed until you quit try-ing!

MEASURE AND CONTROL

Set a goal that is mea-surable, so that you know how you are doing. If

you want to lose weight, for example, decide how many pounds you will lose in a certain amount of time, for example, 12 pounds in three months. It must be a goal that you can control, not one that someone else con-trols. You can change your own behavior, not somebody else’s.

MAKE A PLAN

You’ve heard the say-ing: Plan your work and work your plan. Write your goal down on paper, outlining exactly what you want to achieve. In-clude dates and num-bers, if applicable. You will do much better with a defi nite plan and time frame. Break down your over-all goal into achievable steps. Take one step at a time. This is less over-whelming than trying to tackle a larger problem all at once.

PROGRAM IT IN This step is all-impor-tant. Program the re-quired activities into your daily life, so that you do not depend on willpower. Willpower comes and goes. Treat this like a business decision. For instance, if your goal is to exercise daily, set a specifi c time to exercise, write it into your agenda and keep your exercise appointments. You would not likely stand anybody else up, if that person is important to you. Do not stand yourself up. You are just as important! Show up for your own ap-pointments! Set up your lifestyle to support your health goals. Do not leave any room in your life for failure.

KEEP TRACK

Keep a daily log of all your goal-oriented activi-ties and results, so you can track your progress. As you accomplish more, you will become even more encouraged. This can create a positive mo-mentum to spur you on!

TRUTH OR CONSEQUENCES

Be accountable! Tell someone your goal, some-one who can look over your shoulder and check up on you every day. If you do not do your part, it should cost you some-thing. For instance, if you dare to skip your ex-ercise for the day, there has to be a consequence. You need to decide what this consequence will be ahead of time, when you defi ne your New Year’s resolution. How serious a consequence this will be is up to you.

AN OUNCE OF PREVENTION

Page 3: News review extra december 28, 2013

We learn new lessons each day of our lives, and often we as adults do not think we learn much from children. Children learn from play, and we as adults often do not see this as a learning event. We associate learning by use of books, writing, or media that provides learning, not with play time. Children learn from each other and from all they see and hear. We as adults need to be careful what we say and what we don’t say in the pres-ence of our young family members. This past week I learned a few lessons from our three year old grandson. We took him shopping at the mall. Children often repeat what they have heard, and often they say what they think; without much thought put into their conversation. Children usually say what comes to mind. As we were going to the mall we saw a snow-

man, and I asked our grandson “what do you see? He instantly said it was a snow man. I asked, “Is the snowman real?” and he said, “Well he is real now, but when the sun comes out, and it gets warm he turns to water, then the snowman is no longer real. The next image before us was a Santa. Again I asked the same question, “What do you see?” He replied “A Santa.” I asked him, “Is Santa real?” and our three year old grand-son said, “No, he’s not real, he is just wearing a Santa suit, and when he takes off his suit he no longer is Santa, he is just

pretend, and sometimes it is OK to pretend. As we were walking through the mall looking at all the decorations and went into a few stores and did some of our shop-ping. He enjoyed all the stores with children’s toys and we got a few things he wanted. It appeared to us he was in his own world with the toys we purchased and with all the decorations in the store windows. On the way out of the mall our grandson said “Stop, here is Christmas” I did not see what he did. Against the wall, on the floor and at his level was a Christmas display

including all the images we recall in Christmas Story. He said, “Here are Baby Jesus and Mary and Joseph and the wise people and the sheep.” I asked him is this really Christmas?” He looked at me with questionable eyes and said, “YES this is real, and this is Christmas.” So many adults want to take Christ out of Christmas. They want to be politically correct and want to be so inclusive that they miss the point of why we even celebrate Christmas. Lessons from children often are hard for us to swallow. I know I had a tear in my eye when our grandson pointed this out to us, “This is Christmas.” A child of three has the wisdom of an adult. Another lesson learned – Christ is what Christmas is all about! Sometimes we get so caught up in the shop-ping, giving gifts and going to parties that we

miss the real reason of the season. It is impor-tant to remember that the reason we go out to celebrate, and to give gifts during the Christmas season – is to celebrate the birth of the Christ Child. This year let it be a reminder from a three year old child – to keep Christ in Christmas. At Christmas there is a song in the air that lifts our spirit. May this spirit dwell in our hearts all year long.

Con’t from Page 2.

Choose something that will motivate you to keep your commitment faith-fully.

PLAN FOR SUCCESS

To summarize, iden-tify your health goal very specifi cally, and deter-mine to persevere. Pick a resolution that you can control and measure. Be-lieve that it is possible to achieve. Write down your plan, breaking up the to-tal goal into achievable steps. Then, rearrange your life, so that you will succeed, not having to de-pend on willpower. When willpower is sagging, the structure in your daily life must be able to carry you through. Keep track of your prog-ress and be accountable,

suffering the pre-planned consequence if and when you decide to slack. Plan to win, prepare to win and expect to win! In order to help you achieve your health goals, I am pleased to offer my New Year’s health pro-gram, called “Dr. Gail’s GOOD, BETTER, BEST - DAILY NUTRITION PROGRAMS” Visit my website or call me for de-tails. I wish you all the best with your New Year’s program. And all the best in 2014!

Dr. Gail Smolinski has completed her PhD in Natural Medicine. She is also a Registered Doctor of Natural Medicine, has her Doctor of Naturopa-thy degree and is Board Certifi ed in both Tradi-tional Naturopathy and

Nutritional Wellness. She is a Certifi ed Low Intensity Laser Thera-pist, Master Herbalist, Registered Nutritional Consultant, Professional Homeopath and Holistic Iridologist. Dr. Gail offers Low In-tensity Laser Therapy, health consultations, Iri-dology, bio-energetic ther-apies, detoxifi cation foot-baths and a wide variety of professional health products at her natural health clinic. You may contact her for an appointment at 306-783-1261 on weekdays from 9 to 5 or visit her website at www.drgail.ca This column is not in-tended to diagnose, treat or cure any disease. For many Canadians shoveling snow is their least favourite winter chore. Research has also shown that it can be dead-ly.

Research completed at Queen’s University in Kingston that found a clear link between shoveling snow and sudden cardiac events. The research also suggested that the risk for men was four times that of women and also four times greater if the person had a family history of heart dis-

ease.The culprits are cold air,

which puts extra strain on our hearts; the burst of start-and-stop effort; and the fact that most people don’t warm up their mus-cles in advance.

The Heart and Stroke Foundation also suggests the following tips:• Don’t shovel immediately

after waking up or after eating a meal.

• Walk around for a few minutes or marching in place to warm up.

• Don’t shovel after drink-ing coffee or alcohol; drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.

• Cover your head and neck, as well as your mouth to warm the cold air slightly when breath-ing in.

• Take it easy! Clear the driveway in stages, don’t overload the shovel and take a break if you feel out of breath. Just like you wouldn’t run a mara-thon without training for

it, don’t try to clear all the snow in one session if you are in less than top physical shape.

Emergency medical officials urge people to talk to their doctors before shoveling season. If you’ve previously experienced a heart attack, stroke, or had heart surgery in the past, then you may want to ask a family member or neigh-bour for help.

It’s also important for Canadians to learn how to recognize SCA and to be

ready, willing and able to jump in and take fast action. Immediately deliv-ering CPR (to keep the blood flowing) and using a defibrillator within five minutes gives the best chance for survival. The Philips HeartStart Home Defibrillator is the only new-generation defibrilla-tor specifically designed for the home. The unit is safe can be used by virtu-ally anyone in an emer-gency.
