LEARN TO RUN clinics helped teach people how to run, what to wear and what to eat in order to get healthier and more active. The clinics recently wrapped up in Yorkton with a 5 km graduation run, pictured above.

Yorkton ‘Learn to Run’ clinics successBy DEVIN WILGERN-R Writer

The Learn to Run clin-ics, held to train people how to run and prepare them for the Health Foundation’s Charity Road Race in August, recently wrapped up, holding a 5km gradua-tion run to celebrate. Bernie Wlock, orga-nizer, says that the

weather did not always cooperate with the pro-gram, but it was well received by the runners themselves, with a good average turnout and a lot of progress towards learning how to run. Wlock says that run-ning is good for overall health, and that’s why the clinics are impor-tant, they help people get in better shape and

improve their overall wellbeing. “You might not think so at the start, but you’ll feel a lot better by the end,” Wlock says. First time participant Nicole Peppler says that the program has gone well and she’s glad to have taken it on as a beginning runner. She says that learning every-thing from how to run,

what to wear and what to eat was a great way to get ready for the coming road race. “I’m running it with my mom, it was our bonding experience this summer so I’m looking forward to it,” Peppler says. One of the most valu-able parts of the clinics is the camaraderie, Peppler says, because

having a support of crew of people running with you makes it easier to make progress and stick to the program. While running might be possi-ble alone, Peppler was surprised to find just how much running with a group helps. “When you are in a big group and have all the support it’s way easier to run a 5k, a 10k or a

half-marathon.” She encourages people who are on the fence to take the clinic to get healthier as well as find new friends to continue pushing you to get bet-ter. The Health Foundation Charity Road Race is on August 17, and Wlock encour-ages all runners to take part.

FLOOD WOES – Mel-ville and area were hard hit with rains and fl ood-ing during a weekend of storms which resulted in a state of emergency being declared in many commu-nities. To ensure the safety of residents, 25 patients at St. Peter’s Hospital and 129 long-term care resi-dents at St. Paul Luther-an had to be temporar-ily evacuated. Pictured at left is one of a number of washed out roads leaving people stranded and un-able to pass. In the inset photo is the Melville golf course which went from greens to a lake.

Ed, my neighbor next door, has been like a wet blanket lately. The stretch of wet weather we have been having has soaked into his atti-tude and mildewed his patience. He challenged me on Sunday as I was coming home from church and into my house. “Did you pray for dry weather or thank God for all the rain nobody wants?” he asked accusingly. I con-fessed honestly that I hadn’t prayed about the weather in the church prayers. This led Ed to the statement, “Easy to see you are not a farm-er and you cannot see where God needs to act in this world of ours.” We had a discussion over coffee about the awareness of God in all areas of life that left Ed unconvinced. First I mentioned the poem by Mary Stevenson called, “Footprints in the Sand.” Ed reluctantly let me read it to him. The poem pointed out that often in anguish, sorrow or defeat we cannot not find God’s footprints beside our own. The poem accuses God of not being there for them when God is needed most. In the poem, the Lord says that when we could only see one set of foot-prints in the sand it is because He is carrying us. Ed reminded me that no one has carried him since he was a tiny kid and that the poem didn’t even rhyme. I said that I like to give God thanks for awful stuff which could hap-pen to me but didn’t or doesn’t. There are ter-rible things that might happen to us, but thankfully don’t come to pass. I thank God for keeping myself and oth-ers safe and free from the worst situations possible. Ed thought

that I was pretty silly, but God is sparing peo-ple from bad things all the time. I told Ed that there were folks that we supposed to sail on the Titanic’s maiden voyage, but could not go because of a change in circumstances. After it had sunk, they were thankful for not being able to sail on it. There are certainly tragedies happening, all the time, but God spares individuals and thousands from ones that might have hap-pened. In 1961, a bomb-er broke apart over North Carolina and dropped two atomic bombs in the area around Goldsboro. One of the bombs had com-pleted all the steps nec-essary to go off, but it didn’t. It didn’t go off because the switches necessary to set off the blast were damaged in the fall because the parachute didn’t open. An atomic explosion was prevented because two wires did not cross. Each bomb was 250 times more powerful than the bomb that destroyed Hiroshima. Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara said that the nuclear explo-sion was avoided by the slightest margin of chance. I say that it was averted by God being aware, and pre-venting what might have happened. I pray in thanksgiv-ing that God has pre-vented judgment and condemnation for all who believe in his Son Jesus Christ. There is no difference for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. We justified freely by His grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. Thankfully, God does not count our sins against us which He might have done.

Move over kitchens and bathrooms, homeowners are focusing on a new part of the home: the garage. No lon-ger just a place to park the car and lawn equipment, today’s garages are getting bigger and better. Here are a few quick and easy projects to create a useful and orga-nized garage.

Make a grand entrance. While your garage may be a mess inside, begin your update with a good exterior impression. Adding a coat of paint to the main garage doors can make a dramatic update. And don’t stop there. Jazz up metal side-entrance doors with a more vibrant shade. Rust Protector spray paint from Krylon is an excellent choice to provide superior metal protection – and it dries in just eight minutes to let you carry on with the rest of your projects.

Empty and organize. Now that your garage islooking great from the outside, it’s time to tackle the inside. Start by pulling everything out into the driveway, organizing the contents into groups: lawn and garden; tools and hardware; toys, games and bikes; and for items you no longer want or need – garage sale. While the space is empty, give it a good cleaning from top to bottom.

Create a workstation. No matter what your hobbies or interests, you’ll likely need a space to do work. Assess how much room you can allocate and then create a station to accomplish tasks easily. Old metal tool cabinets are an excellent way to create an inexpensive DIY workbench. First, thoroughly clean the surfaces and then spray paint with Krylon Rust Protector in your favorite colour to not only make it look great, but keep the metal surface pro-tected from rust. Next, mount a work surface to the top. Now you’ll have a designated work area – with all your necessary tools within arm’s reach. Plus, add a few bar stools and it can double as an entertainment station as well!

Keep hardware handy. While tool cabinets keep tools neatly stored away, there are some readily used tools that you want to keep in plain sight. For these items, hang a pegboard on the wall above your new workstation and equip it with a variety of hooks and bins. To take your organization a step further, spray paint outlines of each tool to show where they go. Finally, there will be no excuse to not put the screwdriver away!

Let there be light. If your garage is like most, it has a

single incandescent bulb hanging from the ceiling… definitely not emitting enough light to do any work. Luckily, lighting up your space can be simple and inex-pensive with a fluorescent light fixture. Available in a variety of lengths, these fixtures can easily be installed by hanging from chains mounted into the ceiling and simply plugging into a power source – no need for electrical wiring.

Create smart shelving. When your work area is complete, it’s time to find a place for the other items. Shelving is always a great option – but can be expen-sive to purchase. A more affordable option is to recycle cabinets or shelves that you already have in your home. Have an old microwave cart, plastic shelves or even old kitchen cabinets left from a remodel? They are the per-fect home for garden equipment or kids toys. Clean the surfaces and then paint them to achieve a finished look. Think you can’t paint plastic? Think again. Krylon’s new Dual Superbond spray paint features a proprietary formula that offers a high-adhesion, specialty primer that ensures top performance even on hard-to-paint surfaces such as plastics, laminates and melamine, as well as other commonly painted surfaces.

With a bit of organization and effort, you can trans-form your garage from cluttered to classy in no time at all. For more information on project ideas, visit www.krylon.ca.
