New docs set up in Sunrise The Sunrise Health Region reports access to physician care is continuing to improve both in this area and for all Saskatchewan residents. Three new family physicians are now providing locum ser-vice and practicing in Canora and Melville due to the Sas-katchewan International Physician Practice Assess-ment (SIPPA) program. Drs. Singh (Canora), Obio-ra (Canora) and Ker (Mel-ville) join many other Inter-national Medical Graduate (IMG) colleagues already practising in Saskatchewan. SIPPA is a unique, made-in-Saskatchewan program that assesses IMGs on their edu-cation and clinical ability be-fore allowing them to practice medicine. The program is ad-ministered by the University of Saskatchewan’s College of Medicine. Since the program began in 2011, 134 more doc-tors are practicing in commu-nities across the province. “Patients from all across Saskatchewan have better access to family doctors be-cause of this program,” Min-ister Responsible for Rural and Remote Health Tim Mc-Millan comments. “SIPPA is one of many initiatives that is helping us meet the health care needs of our growing population. In total, there
are more than 400 doctors practicing in the province than there were seven years ago.” “While we continue to re-cruit and retain our own locally trained physicians, SIPPA is helping us fi ll im-mediate vacancies through-out the province. This unique, made-in-Saskatchewan pro-gram is allowing more IMGs to practice here and that is good news,” adds Erin Brady, saskdocs’ interim CEO. “We are seeing more IMGs from within Canada apply and that is encouraging because we have been working hard at reaching out to this par-ticular group.” In addition to these practic-ing physicians, 21 new IMGs are now completing their clinical fi eld assessments as part of the program’s May intake. If successful, these physicians will begin practic-ing across the province later this summer. In collaboration with the health regions, saskdocs con-tinues to recruit physicians through direct recruitment initiatives, establishing re-lationships with medical stu-dents and residents, local, national and international advertising, and attending career fairs at home and abroad.

Investors have been busy putting their money to work in the markets. According to the Investment Company Institute, mutual fund assets worldwide increased to an all-time high of $30.05 trillion at the end of the fourth quarter of 2013, rising $3.2 trillion over the year due primarily to strong capital appreciation in equity related categories. A report from PriceMetrix found that
equity transactional vol-ume also rose in 2013. PriceMetrix examined the books of business of full service advisors and found that equity trades per advisor increased between 2012 and 2013 from 346 to 357. As may be expected, greater transactional volume translates into increased costs for investors. To address transaction-al cost increases, more investors are opting for fee-based pricing models
where they pay a set per-centage typically in rela-tion to portfolio size. PriceMetrix found that fee-based assets have
increased 19% over the last two years. A simple examination of the math provides an explanation of why this structure has grown so much in popu-larity. PriceMetrix findings reveal that, in North American retail wealth management, the aver-age household’s total portfolio is $562,000 with an average equity trade size of $22,730. Assuming there are a couple of such trades per month and 2.5 per cent is charged for each, the total annual trading cost would exceed $13,000. If that investor were instead in a fee-based account charging 1.50 per cent, the savings would be $5,200 per year. The value of those year-ly savings should not be underestimated. If that same investor took their
$5,200 savings each year and invested them for 20 years in a conservative portfolio earning even four per cent, they would generate almost $155,000. And, the investor may benefit from tax advan-tages because fees associ-ated with non-registered fee-based accounts are generally tax deductible. The fee-based model’s inherent values also attract investors. Advisors offering fee-based services tend to focus on wealth manage-ment holistically. Instead of simply providing investment advice, they often supply a variety of additional services such as financial and estate planning, tax planning, and business succession strategies. Those are significant benefits. For example, a financial plan can run between $1,000 and $2,500 depending on its complexity. Similarly, business suc-cession plans typically start at $3,500 and can go upwards to $5,000 or more. Expensive as standalone products, such services are included in the fee-based model. Taking advantage of
these additional services can be very beneficial. According to the Investment Funds Institute of Canada, investors who work with a full service advisor have nearly three times more wealth and investable assets on average than those who do not. Ed, my neighbor next door, saw me with a fresh haircut. He is aware that I have been buzzing my own hair. He tells me that I can get away with cutting my own hair because I’m already bald. I have offered to buzz his hair for him for free, and for a donation to the Red Cross. “Why in the world would I give a donation to the Red Cross?” Ed demanded. “Because at home and around the world they help people in trouble,” I told him. So he told me that it doesn’t matter because he would not trust me with hair clip-pers on his head even for a buzz job. Ed made it clear to me that he wants a haircut that makes him look good, not like he needs a wig. I told him some of us look better hairless. He is certain I need to get my eyes checked. I told him that often we only see what we want to see. I did warn him that he needs to notice when his wife gets her hair done or he will be in serious trouble with Ruby. He assumed I was speaking from experience and he was right. It isn’t easy to always be aware of what we need to see around us. In a spiritual sense, we
may see much more than what is enough for us. Strange, how some things instantly catch our eyes, and other things we miss altogeth-er, even though they are perfectly visible. My next door neighbor can spot a tractor, truck or trouble maker a mile away. His eyesight is so clear that he can tell you, who are hypocrites and phonies without even knowing them per-sonally. Ed recognizes beets, spinach, and cucumbers, as hazardous food for himself, but glories in a cigarette or two for des-sert. He never notices the health warnings on the cigarette packages. I understand this blind-ness as I never locate the calorie count on a chocolate bar wrapper. We are always tempted to see only what we want to see. What looks good to us may not be actual-ly good for us at all. The success of tempta-
tion is that what appears good or satisfying for us actually becomes dam-aging and potentially deadly. Who can see beyond what seems appealing to them? The Bible tells of danger of focusing only on what looks good to us. In the Garden of Eden, Eve saw the forbidden fruit and it was a delight to her eyes, and she ate it
and passed on the indi-gestion of sin to all of us. There was also Achan, who saw and took the forbidden spoils from the conquered city of Jericho. Let’s not forget David, who got himself into no end of trouble, when he acted as a peep-ing tom towards Bathsheba. Temptation is like a piece of meat held before a hungry dog. The dog won’t take his eyes off the food until he gets it. That is why we need to fix our eyes on Jesus when temptations catch our eyes. He is the one that overcame tempta-tion entirely. He can help us to see what is better than what looks good to us.

Safety will make you a happy camper
Ah, nature. Besides the mosquitoes, nothing says summer like a getaway to the great outdoors.
As you wind down from the stress of packing up and driving to the cottage or campsite, the CSA Group, a leader in testing and certification, wants to remind us to stay safe on land and water this sum-mer with these tips:
Boats and Cottages• Always wear a per-
sonal flotation device and never consume alcohol while operating any vehi-cle.
• Make sure that certi-fied carbon monoxide (CO) and smoke alarms are properly installed outside all sleeping areas.
• When opening your cottage for the season, carefully inspect all appli-ances and electrical cords for damage from rodents or insects.
• Ensure boats and cot-tages are equipped with proper emergency safety equipment, including first aid kits and fire extinguish-ers.
CO and Smoke Alarms
• Carbon monoxide is a silent killer. To prevent CO poisoning, fuel-burning equipment should only be used in well-ventilated areas.
• Test each unit at least
once a month because the threat doesn’t take a vaca-tion.
• Change the batteries at least twice a year. A good routine is to change them at the same time you reset your clocks for Daylight Savings Time.
• Be sure to use the cor-rect type of batteries.
• Follow the manufac-turer’s detailed operating instructions.
Camping stoves and lanterns
• Fuel-burning equip-ment such as stoves, lan-terns and cookers should only be lit outdoors and at least three metres from tents, combustible materi-als, and vehicles.
• Before use, carefully inspect parts for leaks, blockages, or damage.
• Keep flammable cloth-ing (and eyebrows) away from open flames, and carefully monitor children and pets around fuel burn-ing devices.
• Before packing up equipment, make sure it is completely turned off and cool to the touch.
