Nationalism

• a feeling that people have of being loyal to and proud of their country often with the belief that it is better and more important than other countries

• a desire by a large group of people (such as people who share the same culture, history, language, etc.) to form a separate and independent nation of their own

Impacts of Nationalism

• Countries ruled by others (colonies) aren’t happy being controlled

• French Revolution inspires ideals of “Liberty, Equality, Fraternity” and Napoleonic Code across Europe

European Effect

• Seen in Europe – Napoleon’s brother Joseph on the throne of Spain

leads to: • Spain revolting and forcing Napoleon to quell the

uprising

– Other revolutions throughout Europe during mid-late 1800’s gain independence and create nations of: • Poland, Greece, Portugal, Germany, Hungary, Italy,

Belgium, etc.

Global Effect

• Venezuela becomes independent from Spain (under Joseph Bonaparte)– Is first of many Latin American nations to do so

• Haitian slave revolt led by Toussaint Louverture – First successful mass slave revolt makes Haiti

independent from France• Latin American nations almost all have

revolutions in the mid-late 1800’s• Africa follows suit in the mid 1900’s

Why was it important then?

– Inspired other revolutions– Helped carry out Enlightenment ideas: Rank and

Nobility abolished, Monarchy abolished, etc. – Idea of superiority reflected in Napoleonic Code– Rights given in Napoleonic Code give citizens

power and pride in country

Why is it important now?

• Revolutions ended colonial powers and created more countries

• Patriotism is a form of nationalism • Idea of nationalism impacts political actions

involving foreign and domestic policy (wars, economic trade, immigration, etc.)
