M uzik Mill.com was the rstto bring you the premier of the new Russ Parr movie “TheUndershepherd”, one of themost in uential movies of theyear. The movie was written,directed and produced by radiopersonality and entertainer RussParr, from the syndicated “RussParr Morning Show”.

Parr has directed severalmovies, including “Somethinglike a Business”, “Love for Sale”,and “35 and Ticking”. While thesemovies depended on comedy,especially from actors like KevinHart and Clifton Powell, hedidn’t want to be “pigeonholed”into making just comedies. “Idon’t want people to think that(I’m) a somewhat funny guy andwill only make comedies… (Themovie) has some fun moments,but it’s a hard core drama. Parrfelt there was a “story to betold. I wanted to take somethingreal and tangible... that’shappening in some churches, notall, but some. And I think I’veaccomplished that in this lm.

During the early morning onthe day of his movie premier,Russ Parr realizes there will besome people in the church thatwill take issue with the movie.The Undershepherd tackles thestory of a preacher caught inthe money and power of thechurch. Parr feels there is an“idolization. People who arestruggling, saying, ‘I want mypastor to drive a Mercedes Benz.I want my pastor to live in a nicehouse. It didn’t make sense tome. And so, you know, I thinkthe big thing for me is we see somany people are just looking forsomeone to look up to. That’swhy it’s heartbreaking whensomething like Bishop Eddie Longhappens. Or you nd out yourfavorite pastor is cheating on hiswife.”

The Undershepherd has

had numerous successes inthe independent lm circuit,recently being praised at theAfrican American Film Festivalin April. However, the lm isstruggling to get distribution.

Parr has been vocal about the lackof acceptance and promotion of dramatic lms starring AfricanAmerican casts, such as RedTails, and the overwhelming

support for the lighter comedies.“I feel ‘35 and Ticking’ wasn’tmy best script. But people feelin love with it. And once you geta couple of the actors, everyoneelse follows. The Undershepherdwas my favorite script. But I held

onto it because I was looking forsomeone to spend money on it.So I’ve pretty much invested inall of my movies and lost my assin all of them.”

Since the interview, there

has been hope for sophisticatedmovies made by and for AfricanAmericans with the success of “Think like a Man”. Distributioncompanies won’t support thesemovies unless we continue to goand show we want to see these
