W elcome to the May edition of ROSSINGTON TODAYROSSINGTON TODAY.

How this year is flying by, already the blossom is in full bloom, and there is new growth everywhere and the daffodils are long past their best! In our household it means that Cricket has been added to the assortment of activities being regularly attended. Fortunately my eldest can walk himself to and from the cricket ground so it hasn’t impacted Mum’s taxi service yet - but then he hasn’t had an away match this year yet!

The next edition will be distributed to you from 30th May, just ahead of all the Jubilee celebrations. Please ensure that anything that you would like to be included is with me by Monday 12th May.

Best Wishes, Paula

C ause for a Cuppa Hello once again from Cause for a Cuppa. It has been a real humbling experience to be able to have these monthly chats. It is encouraging to hear of the number of people who read this little article. Paula has been very kind to allow me to keep this going. As I have said before, being a parent has been the best AND the most difficult thing I

have ever done. Parent-hood carries huge swings and roundabouts of tremendous joy, grief, frustration … and often guilt over what we think we should have done (or not done).

At the time of this writing, I am at a popular children’s theme park based on colourful bricks (need I say the name?) for a couple days with Lisa, Chase & his mate. One of the foundational truths I have found that works is the power of spending fun time with your children. The odd card/piece of paper from my 8 year old that says “bab I love you” (he still gets his “d”s and “b”s switched at times) makes it all worth it!

Though I am no expert, I have learned some bits, mostly through the school of hard knocks that hopefully will help you to avoid some parenting pitfalls. There is no “one size fits all” as each child is unique. These are principles. they don’t equate with God’s “Ten Commandments” in any respect, here are a few things that I think are worth thinking over …

There is no perfect parent. [Don’t be too hard on yourself!] Children need your time more than your money. [but don’t take a vote!] Teachable moments just seem to appear … grab the moment when they do. Have fun. Life gets serious quick enough. Give 10 positive comments for every one time they need a “telling off”. Be as consistent as you can. Say “NO” … establish borders … be realistic in consequences … follow through [don’t say “if you don’t tidy this room now, you will be grounded for LIFE!] Say sorry if you have acted unfairly. [Children learn MUCH more by what is “caught” than by what is “taught”.] Treat each of your children as equally as possible. School performances are equally im-portant as an audience with the queen. [I have seen more than one child cry because no one was there to watch them during a school nativity] As always, thanks for reading and if you would like to stop by for a chat & a cup-pa, the door is always open.

Rossington Parish Council News Two Parish Council meetings took place since last month’s report and the Projects and Regeneration Committees to report on this month.

At the meeting on 13th March the member of the public who had recorded the meeting the previous month was asked not to record the meeting after several Councillors complained of incorrect reporting. The glitch which resulted in the Agenda being put late on to the web site should now have been corrected. The smell from the Misson mushroom farm and the traffic management on Littleworth Lane were also raised. The Chairman also gave a report on the Rossington In Bloom. Planting should start in the next few weeks depending on the weather and the chance of frost.

There was some discussion on the Parish Council’s financial governance with regards to sub-committee’s delegated authority. This will be investigated by the Governance Committee and recommendations made. The Strategy Committee’s recommendation to keep allotment rent the same was ratified.

At the Parish Council meeting on the 10th April, there were two applicants for the vacant position left by the resignation of Alan Robson. The two were Chris Judd and Janet Cooper-Holmes. Janet Cooper-Holmes was duly elected on a 9 to 2 vote.

The Memorial Hall caretaker’s hours were increased from 30 to 35 due to the increased use of the Hall. A letter of thanks was received from the Epilepsy Project re. the donation from the Parish Council to their Christmas dinner, which was apparently a great success.

At the Regeneration Committee 5 planning applications were reviewed. Four ware passed with no observation and one, a tyre depot on Bankwood Lane, concerns were raised about the size of the site.

At the Projects Committee it was announced that there had been a small surplus in the Good Neighbours scheme and that 6300 meals had been provided. This is hoped to grow next year and will continue to be supported by the Parish Council. It has been proposed that a memorial plaque be sited, commemorating the bravery of a number of miners, in both the Miners Wheel Memorial Garden and the Miners’ Welfare. Work on the Garden next to the Memorial Hall will start shortly. Issues regarding the public toilets were raised and it was noted that some vandalism had taken place.

The Projects Committee also discussed the Xmas Fayre and it was decided to have a meeting of interested parties to plan this. Security at the Bankwood allotments was discussed and further work was to be carried out. The Jubilee Wood would also be planned and planting is hoped to take place in the late autumn.

It was also proposed to put a contingency fund of £2,000 for the Vintage Vehicle and Machinery Show to ensure its’ financial security. The show raises money for local charities and is hoped to be a great success. This takes place at The Miners’ Welfare on Saturday and Sunday 26th and 27th May 2012. There will be a small charge for entry. It is hoped that we will raise as much as we can for charity.

There was also a Triple ‘A’ Meeting at which the National Planning Policy Framework and Neighbourhood Planning were discussed so that we are not left behind when prospects for new development occur.

R ossington Wheelers Cycling Club – May News We’ll begin this month with a quick look back at the main events that took place in April with a busy start to the clubs racing programme up first. As usual Club riders have been entering individual ‘open’ events but the club has also been well represented in the area

league team competition, sitting 7th after two events. The first of these was a windy 25 mile ‘2up’ where we entered three two-man teams; Adrian West & Paul Jones clocking 1.08.30 (hr min sec), Shaun Randall & Gary Irvine 1.09.33 and Paul Ellwell and Adrian Dobson 1.12.03 all scoring decent points. The second event was an individual event over the shorter 10 mile distance – again six riders rode the event, Shaun Randall being most successful on the day claiming the handicap award with a gross time of 25.09 on the Hatfield Woodhouse based course. With a decent pool of strong riders now keen on entering future events we hope to score well at upcoming events?

Two of the riders that competed at that second event above provided the age extremes of a nineteen rider turnout for the clubs first 100 mile ride of the season over Humber Bridge on Good Friday, 76 year old ‘club best allrounder’ John Scully being joined by 14 year old Stephen Patterson riding his first ‘century’ and various ages in between on the 108 mile trip. Proof indeed that age is no barrier to getting about on your bike, (although youngsters under 16 need to be accompanied on club rides by a guardian). Also in April seven club riders completed the Peak100 charity Sportive around the challenging Peak District from Macclesfield, well done to those.

Events upcoming in May include the continuation of the clubs own ‘AAD Gas Handicap TT League’ which commenced in mid April. Details of these weekly Wednesday night events and of course all other club information can be found on the clubs website www.rossingtonwheelers.co.uk or on the clubs facebook page by searching our full name. Another reason to keep an eye on these pages is the recent formation of an off-road section, or at least the organisation of some off road rides. If you have an interest in this area of the sport feel free to make that interest known to the club to be kept up to date with future planned rides. Members have already covered various parts of the TPT around the county and interest in further rides is growing. Face to face details are available by speaking to Les at Hudson Cycles.

To compliment the introductory rides that the club has placed periodically into the Sunday morning club run list a summer ‘social ride’ will be staged each Tuesday evening from 1st May, leaving St Michaels at 6.30pm. These rides will be approx 25 miles and 2 hours in duration and will suit anyone needing a stepping stone up to longer club rides. Recent Sunday rides have been regularly 70 – 80 miles, completed in approx 4 – 5 hours riding time which can be a big step up when inexperienced at spending that amount of time in the saddle!

On the social side of things the clubs annual trip to the Dales is planned for the weekend of 25-27 May and so members are looking forward to that.....apart from the hills, and a ride to watch one of the main one day events in the calendar - the Lincoln Grand Prix is also on the agenda in mid May.

Lastly this month the club has been granted, in partnership with Asda the opportunity of staging a major charity event to coincide with, and in aid of the BBC Children In Need Appeal in November. This is a way off yet but plans are afoot to make the event something a bit special, further details in coming months but suffice is it to say that last years ‘Coast 2 Coast’ ride will look like a bit of a jaunt in comparison!

R OSSINGTON MAIN F.C. Probably by the time this May edition of ROSSINGTON TODAY reaches your doorstep our 1st. team will have played

their final match of the 2011-12 season, a long away trip to Louth. The 2nd. team will still have possibly 2 vital home fixtures to play as they strive for the Premier Division title. They have squandered a 6 point advantage at the top of the League and as I write this article they currently sit 3 points adrift of the new League leaders Sutton Rovers, who incidentally they play in their final League fixture on Saturday May 5th at Oxford Street with a 2-30p.m. kick-off. It could be the title decider but only if our lads recover a bit of their early season form during April. There are 2 other fixtures at the ground in the preceding week - our 2nd team host Hatfield Main in another important clash on Tuesday 1st May and on the Friday evening the Doncaster Challenge Cup Final will be decided. I do not know the finalists at this stage but the semi-finals are being contested between Yorkshire Main/Ackworth United and AFC Sportsman(Mexborough)/Denaby United on Easter Monday. Both evening midweek games at Oxford Street k.o. at 7-00p.m.

It has been a very disappointing March for our 2nd team as they have picked up just 2 League points from a possible 15, a disastrous dip in form. We now have to win our remaining 5 games culminating in what could be that title decider on May 5th, and hope that Sutton suffer at least one other defeat in their final games—our goal difference is far superior should it eventually be down to a tie on points.

Our U.19 side are now unbeaten in 4 consecutive games as they catch up on the matches postponed in January. With 2 matches remaining they could finish the season in 3rd place.

Back to the 1st team and whatever happens in the 5 remaining League games we will have recorded our best ever season as we have already amassed 55 points and could well finish in the top six. Pleasingly not only will we finish with our highest points haul, we will also record best goals scored, fewest goals conceded (therefore best goals aggregate) and we could win the Fair Play League for our division.

Possibly due to our publicity in this magazine but also because of the form we have shown over the year, we will create a record for attendances at Oxford Street over the season and an increase of 23% on last season. We still struggle to finance all this as the Club's overheads are so high. Fortunately we are not heading in the direction of Portsmouth, Port Vale or Rangers! Wouldn't it be nice if we could find a generous benefactor so that we could reward our local lads just a little incentive to keep them at Rossington Main, although I strongly also believe that we should encourage all our players to progress in the game to the highest possible level. Next month I shall be encouraging volunteers to come down to the ground to help with ground maintenance as we are always striving to improve facilities for players and spectators alike.

IAN WILSON (Asst. Manager)

R OSSINGTON M.W.B.C. The 2012 competitive bowling season started on April 10th with a Tuesday Doubles League evening game for our B

team versus Carcroft, however the most unseasonable temperatures of late March attracted a number of our members down to the greens as they bathed in glorious afternoon sunshine. There was an excellent attendance at the pre-season meeting which suggests the members are keen to support the Club's activities over the next six months.

Matches are held most days of the week during the competitive playing season, which extends to late September, so you can almost guarantee there will be a game on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday afternoon and also Tuesday and Thursday evening. Feel free to come down to watch or to make enquiries about playing yourself, all our members will welcome you. Come down anytime you see someone on the greens as several of our members make use of the greens on days other than match days. We will always give you the opportunity to try the game out before you commit to anything. Not all our members register to play competitive bowls, we have a reduced subscription for those that wish to bowl socially or for pleasure/ recreation, and because we have use of 2 greens, social bowling can in most cases be accommodated even when a match is being played. What other sport could offer you such value for money -almost exclusive use of the greens for 6 months for £25 or less. Remember we can supply you with bowls free of charge to hire, until the time you may wish to decide to purchase a set of your own.

We are offering membership to Under 16s at just £5 for the season with free tuition, and once they have mastered the basics and show green etiquette, exclusive access for them also. At the initial stage it is probably best if you accompany younger children to the green at any time to express interest, and we will arrange for them to have a couple of sessions to see if they are interested, before making any payment. If sufficient interest we may arrange regular tuition and practice sessions for youngsters. It would be very pleasing if we could get a few more youngsters down to the greens.

Our only current junior Bobby Porter has been selected for the District and South Yorkshire squads. Congratulations Bobby, I am sure you will be a fine ambassador of our Club at these events.

Finally I am reliably informed that the Thursday morning sessions will re-commence on THURS. MAY 3rd at the usual starting time of 10-00a.m. This originally started out as a Ladies session but expanded last season thanks to the efforts of member Malc Needham, and is open to anyone who would like to experience some social bowling in a friendly environment.

Please direct any enquiries about crown green bowling in Rossington to the Secretary on 867221.

R ossington Cricket Club The much awaited new season started on a bitterly cold damp April day with just the one game, the first team fixture against newly promoted local rivals Conisbrough visiting the Welfare ground.

This was always going to be a tough fixture but the unavailability of several players through suspension and work commitments made it more so. The shortage of players resulted in the recently retired veteran Roy Nelson, free from umpiring duties due to a fixture change, was pressed into service.

Conisbrough, batting first, scored 210 all out Gary Strephan an entertaining 70 and Jonathan Phillips a more studied 67 being the highlights, Roy Nelson taking 5 wickets for 51. The Rossington innings never got going and closed on 81 the only highlight being an encouraging 26 from junior wicket keeper Jack Eusman. It was noted that the attitude of some players fell short of what was expected, it is hoped that this will improve at the weekend.

Roy Nelson

R ossington Hornets

As the season draws to a close on a disappointing league campaign for the Rossington Hornets, we can conclude that this season has been a very large challenge for the club, not least because of

players and coaches leaving the club but also the illness of our chairman which meant we lost him for large chunks of the season. This meant that the club was without experienced leadership and coaching skills and other team members had to step up to meet this challenge. Hopefully our chairman Kevin Fennelly will be back with us soon

The positives are we now have a young, eager & ever-learning side with an average age of just 23 (and that includes a few of the oldies forcing up the figure!). It wasn’t ideal we have had such a young, inexperienced team and our young players have had to play more than we would have liked and been subjected to a very fast learning curve but our young lads have risen to the challenge and recently lots of clubs have given the team positive feedback in the strides we have made.

Off the field things are looking a lot more positive. As a club we are growing in spirit and momentum and we are already looking towards next season. We have started to fundraise, with a recent Raffle raising £200 due to the generosity of local businesses who supported us by giving prizes. These businesses include Fyshcreative Photography, Micks Carpets, Taylors Florist, Radburn Stores, Kelly’s Pod, Zodiax Hair salon, B&J’s Butchers, Occasions, Variety’s and Phoenix trading. We would like to give a big thanks to these local businesses for supporting local sport in their community.

A great opportunity for any local businesses that may which to support the club for the upcoming season would be to sponsor us. Sponsors are currently being sought to help the club towards its running costs of £2000 and new kit costs of £900. We nearly have a kit design ready, and as a sponsor your business name would feature on the new kit and all advertising would carry your businesses logo as well as there being publicity for you on the Hornets website. As a sponsor you will be directly supporting local sport in our community and have the honour of being able to say you are helping to keep a rugby club in the village.

Sponsors would not be expected to meet the whole costs as we do try to raise funds ourselves. In fact to raise some much needed funds for the club, we have already planned a fun event for the 2nd June to be held at the Welfare in Rossington.

This will be a ‘Race Night Event’ to raise funds for next season. Entry is just £5 and included in this is a pie and pea supper. Local businesses or individuals can support the event by having a race named after them for just £10 or by being an owner, jockey or trainer of a horse for just £2. All owners, jockeys and trainers of winning horses win a prize! For those that like a flutter, come along for some great fun!

If you would like any information or want to purchase a ticket for the night, please contact us at [email protected].

Elizabeth "Betty" Baker, RIP 11th July, 1929 - 27th March, 2012

We are extremely grateful to the wonderful ladies from SureCare who have taken care of Mum so well over the past year.

Heartfelt thanks are extended to all Mum's family, friends and carers who attended her funeral service at Rose Hill on the 10th April.

Mum is now reunited with her husband at St. Michael's.

You generously gave over £200 in donations which will be rounded up to £300 by the family and sent to: The Alzheimer's Society Doncaster and Rotherham Branch.

The ad in the December issue for a carer for Mum generated thirteen responses; the ad in the January issue generated another five responses. We were overwhelmed with the positive responses and the fact that there are people who will do such caring for a relatively low, but fair, payment (in comparison to going via an agency). I would recommend that anyone out there who is looking for help to keep their parents at home should not hesitate to use Rossington Today to help them find someone.

Friends of Brodsworth Way Residents Group

Support for the group has been waning of late so we decided to hold it in abeyance until we either get an estate problem to solve or feel the necessity for a meeting. However, the Council are very supportive and we hope for some news by the time the June issue of Rossington Today comes out. Residents are, of course, at liberty to take any issues to the PACT meetings, where both the Police and Council are represented.

Radburn Tara would like to invite local residents to join them. What is a Tenants and Residents Association (TARA)? A Tenants and Residents Association is a non-political group of people living in an area, block of flats or street, who have come together to take up issues of common concern in relation to their housing, community and general environment.

The people involved in an association can be council tenants, housing association tenants, private tenants, owner occupiers and leaseholders.

The association is a voluntary group and is there to represent the views of its membership and local residents and to pass them on to their landlord, the local authority and other relevant agencies.

Your local TARA needs you!

New residents welcome and committee members required. The next meeting is Wednesday 9 May 2012, 3pm at the Ragusa Centre, Radburn Road.

Rossington PACT

9 May 2012,

6.30pm

at Holmescarr Centre

The Epilepsy Project This year we are trying to raise in excess of £1000 to buy 3 bed alarms and 10 safety pillows. In the UK there are over 500,000 who suffer from different types of epilepsy. 1,150 die each year in their sleep through seizures, so there is a very real need for these items.

We are selling flower arrangements made by our group on a Friday afternoon at the Memorial Hall Rossington 2pm - 4pm, they are £2.50 each.

On 12th May we have a fundraising evening at the Memorial hall Rossington 7pm - 11pm tickets are £3 each and includes entertainment and a buffet. There will be a raffle tea and coffee will be provided.

We are hoping to do a sponsored walk during Epilepsy Week 20th May - 26th May, should anyone want to become involved or is interested in joining our group then please contact me on 01302 866 136.
