How this year is flying by, already the blossom is in full bloom, and there is new growth everywhere and the daffodils are long past their best! In our household it means that Cricket has been added to the assortment of activities being regularly attended. Fortunately my eldest can walk himself to and from the cricket ground so it hasn’t impacted Mum’s taxi service yet - but then he hasn’t had an away match this year yet!

The next edition will be distributed to you from 30th May just ahead of all the Jubilee celebrations. Please ensure that anything that you would like to be included is with me by Monday 12th May.

Tickhill Scarecrow Festival - 2012

By the time you read this you should be well on with your Scarecrow! If not, you need to get a move on!

The Scarecrow Festival is Saturday 5th May, and we've had over 70 entries this year, quite a lot are from people who have never entered the competition before. For some people this is their third attempt to wow the judges!

The competition will be judged during the morning of the Festival and rosettes will be pinned on later in the day. The day will run from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Programmes for this event will be on sale in KSM Cards beforehand and on the day, and Sarah Bartram and several other people will be selling them around Tickhill on the day. I hear there will be quite a few 'live' scarecrows around on the day, so keep your eyes open for them! There is a children's competition includ-ed on the programme with cash prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd.

Other attractions will be set out around Tickhill, including stalls at The Oak, including Tombolas, a cupcake stall, Flower Stall, jewellery stalls, Bric a Brac, Fancy goods, and home made gifts and cakes. There will be a burger van also serv-ing tea and coffee and pop. There will be chil-dren's rides. Most of the shops and pubs will be open, some are offering 'specials' for the day.

Castle Close Community Centre will be holding a Nearly New stall, and will also be selling tea and coffee and cold drinks.

Entertainment will be going on during the day on the Buttercross, including Morris Dancing, Karate demonstrations

Generally everyone will be in holiday mood, so don't miss out on the fun!

Wadworth goes ‘Oinks!!!’

On Friday the 24th February Wadworth Primary School had a successful enterprise day.

The children from all years enjoyed making their fantastic creations. The whole point of enterprise day was so that children could understand the logics of their own business and how to handle money for future references. It was hard work for every class because they each had more than one project to focus on. Each class did exceptionally well and everyone had a smile on their face at the end off the day.

Year one made piggy banks using paper mache and a bal-loon. They turned out to be fantastic and they were all sold; even teachers bought them because they were so good! Everyone really enjoyed learning new skills.

T ickhill Jubilee Picnic & Tea Party

Hopefully by now you’ve heard that Tickhill Town Council has joined together with many other local groups to organise what we hope will be a fitting grand finale to the Queens Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

On bank holiday Monday the 4th of June, the Tickhill Jubilee Picnic & Tea party will be taking place on Tickhill recreation ground. Starting at midday and running until 6pm, this free event will provide fun and entertainment for all the family. We’ll be announcing the full running order in next month’s edition of Tickhill Today which will land on your doorstep just a few days before the event. But in the mean time here are some of the things to look forward to and a few point-ers on how to make the most of the day.

L et’s Celebrate - Tickhill Methodist Church’s 175th Anniversary In June this year, members of Tickhill Methodist Church will be celebrating 175 years of worshipping in the existing building, opened in 1837.

To celebrate 175 years of worship on this site, there will be :- Tickhill & District Male Voice Choir in Concert on Saturday 2nd June at 7.30 pm, in the Chapel. Preachers on Sunday 3rd June are 10 am - Rev Noel Irwin and 6.pm - Mr Dennis Rix. Flower Festival in the Chapel, opening with a service on Friday evening 8th June, Saturday 9th June and Sunday 10th June. Refreshments will be available. Preachers for this Anniversary weekend are Rev Christine and Mr Robin Hawke, both morning and evening. Bramley Brass Band will play during Sunday afternoon and will include some Hymns in the form of “Songs of Praise”. Preachers on Sunday 17th are Rev John Hartley 10 am and Own Arrangements 6 pm Preachers on Sunday 24th are Mrs Pam Barrer 10 am and Mr Norman Dye 6 pm.

All services are taking an Anniversary theme. Please come along and join in with the celebrations. You will be most welcome.

Today Arts Review

Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery http://www.doncaster.gov.uk It is revealing to watch the face of people entering the Museum’s main gallery. The looks of amazement are accompanied by loud ooohs and arrhhhs from all age groups. What has aroused their interest is a drawing exhibition of large portraits drawn with exquisite detail and assured technique. The artist Mark Murphy is from Manchester and this exhibition marks a departure from his normal practice as a painter of English landscape in the style of Bomberg and Auerbach – very thick and expressive brush work, and usually worked from direct observation in the landscape. These portraits are all worked from photographs – which is an odd thing for such a painter to do– as this is the province of the amateur artist, to work from newspaper cuttings and snaps, but his experience shows through, and the fact than he can handle pencil ( the hard-est of all drawing materials) albeit a 9B, on a large scale transforms these works into another realm. www.markjpmurphy.com Exhibition continues until 20 May Alongside Murphy’s portrait exhibition is a touring show from the Royal Geographical Society called Kabul to Kandahar. It is a set of 19th century photographs together on text panels and also includes maps, drawings and lithographs. What these pictures demonstrate is that the West has been politically involved in the region since early Victorian times and that the problems that we grapple with today began almost 200 years ago. There were three Anglo Afghan wars between 1839 and 1919 in a power struggle between the British and Russian Empires in an attempt to keep Russia from the Indian borders. These photographs show many scenes which look very similar to the footage we see on TV today, of dry and dusty landscape with poor and rugged locals, but the characters in these historical photographs, both British and Afghan are wonder-fully romantic, Westerners dressed in full Afghani dress and the Amir wearing a western 3-piece suit which was tailored in London! Researcher Sara Wajid working with the Afghan community in London collaborated to make this exhibition. His large spider on the Gripple factory on Saville Street in Sheffield is one of the City’s landmarks. His exhibition ‘Beastly Machines: Automated Animals’ demonstrates his life long interest with me-chanics. He is a crank shaft and piston artist using the latest pneumatic technology. His large scale animal sculptures are humorous, imaginative, irreverent and often very noisy! Exhibition continues until10 June 2012. www.white-wray.co.uk

New Cinema Celebrates Official Opening

The completion of Worksop’s brand new Savoy cinema was celebrated on Thursday evening, 22 March, with an exclusive, Hollywood themed, launch party ahead of Friday’s official opening to the public. The night of glitz and glamour saw more than 200 specially invited guests walk up the red carpet to enjoy a champagne and canapé reception before being ushered into one of the cinema’s six screens to preview the cinema’s state-of-the-art sound and projection technology with blockbusting new release, The Hunger Games.

Guests at the VIP event included football star Liam Palmer, who comes from Worksop and plays for Sheffield Wednesday, Worksop athlete Tesni Ward who holds the current Welsh javelin record, and Crystal Lane, a member of the GB Para-Cycling Talent Team and world number one para-cyclist in both the 500 metre time trial and 3,000 metre pursuit.

Managing Director of Savoy Cinemas Ltd, James Collington, said: “It’s fantastic to see that the hard work from everyone involved with the project has paid off and we have been able to deliver a fist class cinema both on time and on budget. Learning for Life Succeeding Together

A Special Day! Thursday 29 March was a very special day for STWCC. This was the day our Easter Tea Party for the `Golden Oldies` of our community turned into the most wonderful occasion that exceeded all our expectations.

It was the 100th Birthday of Mrs Bella Strutt – one of our Golden Oldies - and our talented students organised and produced the party of a life-time. They entertained with songs from the decade, made and served gorgeous food and persuaded two very special guests to join us. The level of excitement was immense as Barry Elliott (of the Chuckle Broth-ers) and Harry Gration (Look North) presented a birthday cake to Mrs Strutt. Barry and Harry were very generous with their time and certainly made each and every one of our guests feel very special. We are extremely grateful to them both.

Mrs Strutt arrived in a police car with sirens ablaze! And during the party we had a video message from Singapore from her granddaughter and a posse of school children singing Happy Birthday. The cake was beautifully made, and kindly donated, by Mrs Carole Makin. She also made an individual cake for Mrs Strutt to keep. All in all a fabulous day!

The Final 8!

Congratulations once again to Claudia Ridgeway, Nicole Miles and Emily Hewitt (Year 8) who were "totally brilliant" on Sunday 25 March as they won through to the National Final of the Rotary Club Youth Speaks competition. They are one of only eight teams remaining who will now compete in the National Final on Saturday 28th April 2012 at Glyndwr University, Wrexham, North Wales.

Congratulations too to Holly Oleisky who was amazing and just missed out on a place in the National Final of the Rotary Young Musician Competition.

St Mary’s Jubilee Copse As the church bells rang at 10 o’clock on Sunday 11th March a happy band of volunteers arrived at the school ground

and they worked tirelessly to plant well over 120 trees and hedgerow saplings; Tickhill St Mary’s Jubilee Copse was born!

Many, many thanks go to the children, parents and staff who came to help with the planting of both the copse and the hedgerow in our Quiet Garden. Thanks also go to our Year 2 Class who planned and measured the area in readiness for the planting. They did and an excellent job; to Torne Valley for their greatly appreciated gift of mulch, Tickhill Garden Centre for their donation of a gift voucher, the Woodland Trust for the hedgerow saplings and young trees and the Tickhill Countryside Group for their help, advice, expertise and donation of stakes, swirlies and trees.

Everyone agreed it was a wonderful way to spend a sunny Sunday morning and most things went very smoothly apart from the odd minor injury which was borne with exceptional bravery! One little person was prickled by a bush and bravely pronounced that it was not the bush’s fault, but it was just defending itself from a monster….

Plans for a bug hotel, pathways through the copse, composting bins and many other activities will continue throughout the year, as well as the development of our Quiet Garden with raised beds and a sundial.

The new Bishop of Doncaster, Bishop Peter, came to plant our Royal Oak sapling in the copse and bless it with a prayer. As one of the children put it: The bishop used the holy B & Q spade to plant the Royal Oak!

Sports Relief Anyone who watched Sports Relief on television will know how important the money raised by Sports Relief is to disadvantaged people all over the world! The grief of losing a child to a preventable decease like diarrhoea cannot be imagined or an eleven year old spending all day making clay bricks by hand leav-ing his hands sore and his whole body aching and tired when all he dreams of is going to school. Think of children sleeping on the streets trying to make a living by collecting rubbish from the tip to sell for recycling or children in this country who have to grow up far too early and take the responsibility of being a carer for an ill or disabled parent.

Sports Relief try to help by providing taps for clean drinking water, establishing schools and orphanages and giving children caring for their parents a much needed break. Our children all walked, jogged or hopped a mile on Sports Relief day to raise money for all these well deserved causes. When a lady who lives next door to our sports field came out to ask what the children were doing and they explained the reason for running the mile, she promptly got her purse out and donated! We are constantly amazed by the kindness of Tickhill residents. Thank you. With the sale of Sports Relief wristbands and generous donations our children raised a fantastic £265! Well done!

Friends of Tickhill Mill Dam - Ten Years On

On the 16th May 2002, the Earl of Scarborough officially opened the re-furbishment of the Tickhill Mill Dam area. This considerable project, costing in excess of £200,000 and taking five years from conception to completion, was a joint venture between the Mill Dam Improvement Group (MDIG) and Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council (DMBC). After the official opening the Chairman of the MDIG, Philip Mottram, suggested a group should be formed to ‘look after’ this important historic area. On 2nd October, 2002, the Friends of Tickhill Mill Dam (FOTMD) was formed.

The FOTMD’s aim is to preserve and improve the amenities of the Tickhill Mill Dam area. To this end the FOTMD, in partnership with DMBC, has replaced the damaged information board and repaired a panel of the metal railings along Lindrick. They have also had all the metal railings along Lindrick re-painted, re-furbished the litter bins and re-surfaced the top path between the Mill Dam and the Mill Field. FOTMD members also collect litter on a regular basis.

The Mill Dam area is an ongoing project for the FOTMD and DMBC. We have recently obtained funding (£7,000) to repair the eroded west bank of the Mill Dam and will continue to ‘look after’ this unique bit of South Yorkshire for future generations. To celebrate our first ten years there will be a small exhibition in the entrance to Tickhill Library from late July to early September showing what the MDIG and the FOTMD have achieved so far.

T ickhill and District Male Voice Choir celebrated fifty years of singing in 2011. Special events included a 50th Anniversary Concert held in Tickhill Methodist Church

and an excellent gala dinner at Doncaster Golf Club. The after dinner entertainment was royally given by several of our talented members.

Our Golden Anniversary culminated with the annual Christmas concert. A capacity audience was entertained with a programme of traditional songs, and comedy sketches themed on a “Yorkshire Twist” .

Our Christmas Carol singing helped to raise £500 for local charities and we are hoping to benefit more charities this year. The choir performs throughout the year for local organisations, charity events and by special request.

Recruitment is necessary for all singing groups, an on going activity to ensure their current and future success. Gentlemen, if you enjoy singing don’t just sing in the bath, do come and sit in at a rehearsal, no obligation or pressure to join us, listen to the male voice sound. Reading music is not essential, songs are learned line by line, part by part. A warm welcome will be given to you, so don’t be reserved with your singing come and experience the satisfaction of singing in a group of male voices.

T ICKHILL MUSIC SOCIETY For the March concert the Society called on the resources of the Sheffield-based ‘Music in the Round’ and ‘Ensemble 360’ for a team of six string players - pairs of violins, cellos and violas. It began in quartet format playing the ‘Italian Serenade’ by Hugo Wolf, a

single movement work, jaunty, rhythmic and full of southern sunshine.

The first string sextet was Op. 48 by Dvorak published in 1879. It is typically tuneful and played with great musicality by these talented performers. The first movement in sonata form is based on a beautiful melody. The two inner movements spring from the folk music tradition. First, a rather mournful ‘Dumka’ with its alternating slow/fast sections. This is followed by a Czech-inspired ‘Furiant’ played at breathtaking speed and wonderful precision. The Finale is a Theme and five Variations rounded off with a lively Coda, all played with sensitivity and lyricism. After the interval came the String Sextet No. 1, Op. 18 by Brahms, an early work. The first movement in sonata form is followed by the majestic Theme and Variations which some feel is the throbbing heart of the whole piece.

A vigorous and lively Scherzo is followed by the final Rondo. The whole evening’s work was played with stunning musicianship and tightly coordinated ensemble and was enthusiastically applauded by a very appreciative audience. Another successful concert by this enterprising Music Society.

Buses Service 22 - no changes. Service 304 - no changes, will still operate on Tuesday and Fridays to Doncaster, via Maltby. Service 205 - Major changes, to benefit Tickhill residents. This service from the 30th April, will serve the following areas of Tickhill: Certain journeys will serve these roads, from Sunderland Street, Market Place, Wilsic Road, Westfield Road, Wong Lane, Westgate, Castle Gate, Sunderland Street, and Tickhill Road, then onwards to Doncaster. The service around Wilsic Road, Westfeild Road and Wong Lane, will follow a one way loop around the area.

This now gives 5 services a day Monday to Saturday to/from Tickhill, for the Wong Lane area. In addition to this, you get an extra service to/from Tickhill, on Service 304 on Tuesday and Fridays only.

Also, on Sundays, the 205 service is back to serve Tickhill. This will start/end at Sunderland Street. This means we now have earlier buses at 0600 and 0804 to Doncaster. Some of the 205 services will now benefit anyone needing to get to/from Harworth/Bircotes, and travel beyond there to Bawtry, Blyth, Retford and Robin Hood Airport.

Tickhill residents celebrate Diamond Wedding Anniversary. Eric and Brenda Beauchamp were married at St Judes Church in Hexthorpe Doncaster on 22nd March 1952 the same year as the Queen’s coronation. They celebrated with family and friends on Sunday 18th March with lunch at Ye olde Bell in Barnby Moor and on the actual day of the anniversary Thurs 22nd March with lunch at The Ship in Bawtry with daughter Jan, daughter and son Steve and a surprise visit of family from Teignmouth, Devon.

Eric worked for British Ropes which became Bridon wire until he retired in mid 1980’s and Brenda worked as Doctors’ receptionist at the Bradford Row practice in Doncaster. until they retired in mid 1980’s when they moved to Tickhill.

Easter at Tickhill Estfeld

Recently Co-operative Funeral Care invited our pupils to enter their “Design an Ester Egg Competition”. The prize of

a limousine ride to the Mansion House to meet the Civic Mayor, Councillor Eva Hughes, proved enticing and 92 pupils entered their designs. After much deliberation two pupils were chosen as deserving winners; they were Ted Ruston in Year 1 and Frances Grant in Year 6.

As promised the mayoral limousine arrived to collect Ted and Frances and the whole school went outside to wave them off. Accompanied by Josie Ruston and Mrs Ruston, Alex Grant and Mrs Grant, and Year 6 teacher Mrs Wall they arrived in style at the Mansion House. The party met the Civic Mayor and were given a guided tour of the historic build-ing. Ted and Frances were also presented with Easter egg prizes and goody bags. Congratulations to Ted and Frances on their achievement and well done to all who entered as the standard of entries received was very high. Thank you to Bridgette Perks and all at the Co-operative and to Councillor Eva Hughes and the team at the Mansion House. Ted and Frances really enjoyed their visit and prizes.

M ayflower Animal Sanctuary Where does the time go, I cant believe we are into April already together with the lovely sunshine and the freezing wind and snow. There can only be this country with such a diversity of weather.

As a Sanctuary we have had our best 2 months for adoptions so we must be doing something right. Our kennels are still full, as the waiting list doesn't seem to go down. In reality we don't mind because it is far better for dogs and cats to be with us than stay in homes that are strug-gling for one reason or another to keep their pets. We must also remember that there are lots of people through no fault of their own need to re home their much loved pets. We will always be there to help and advise.

Unfortunately we are still also having lots of abused dog cases sent to us. One being a 12 week old puppy with a broken leg. She is on the mend and doesn't seem to have been phased by her ordeal.

We are great believers in not homing puppies with children under 5 years old. The reason being that as any mums with young children know, their work is cut out for them already, without the added stress of a lively puppy that chews anything in sight .

Another dog was brought to us with horrendous mange. This seems to be an on-going problem, if this condition is treated early enough it would not cause the poor dog such agony and it wouldn't cost the owner so much money they cant afford to keep their pet.

Their are still the usual problems regarding dogs being found with no owner in sight and no one claiming them, also dog stealing is still rife so please be careful and do not tie your much loved pet outside shops even though you will only be minutes purchasing a newspaper. We have had so many upset people calling us as their dogs have disappeared that way. There are also people out there that would wait for a reward to go up before you got your pet back. So please make sure you do not leave your dog unattended and it is chipped at least if it is lost you will be reu-nited with your pet almost immediately.

Don't forget we are getting into kitten season and check out neutering costs with your local vet, lots seem to have offers on at the moment.

I would like to say a big thank you to everyone that brought me towels and bedding throughout the winter months it has been such a great help keeping our residents warm and dry.

Also a big thank you to everyone that has collection boxes in their shops and particularly to Di-ane in Tickhill who gave us a huge bottle of whisky but something far more important than whisky was in it. It was full of money thank you so much.

Mayflower Sanctuary is a Rescue Centre that has been established since 2003. Its main aim is to rescue and rehome abused and abandoned dogs and cats.

Based at Bawtry, Doncaster you would report to the Sanctuary Manager and will be responsible for the day to day supervision of stall, trainees and volunteers. T ickhill & District Lions Club At Tickhill & District Lions quite often we’re not able to discuss the welfare projects we undertake as many involve helping local residents and so we’re

always very careful to protect the privacy of those concerned. However we know that many of you support our events and so like to hear about how your money helps, so this month we’ve got an update about one of our local school projects that we’re able to be involved with as a result of your support.

Grange Lane Infant school in Rossington runs a gardening club for their pupils. Not only does the club enable children to get their hands dirty and learn about growing their own plants, fruit and vegetables, but it also helps to create budding entrepreneurs as much of the produce is also sold to help raise funds to keep the club going. The club already gets a lot of support from parents as well as the teaching and caretaking staff, but we’ve been able to offer further support which we hope has helped to make their club even stronger.

We’ve achieved this by helping to fund additional plants and equipment including raised beds and compost, strawberry planters and a variety of fruit trees and bushes. We’d like to thank Walkers Nurseries of Branton who not only supplied many items at cost (making your money go further), but were also able to source plants which otherwise we may not have been able to find. These included special thornless Gooseberry bushes which were required to meet health & safety guidelines and were sourced and imported from a specialist supplier in Holland.

We’re really proud that since our help the school have achieved their level 2 in the RHS schools gardening scheme, and by taking orders from staff and parents for herbs, plants and other produce they have taken another step towards the financial self-sufficiency they are aiming for.

Tickhill’s Annual Scarecrow Festival is almost upon us again, although we have just one day of scarecrow celebrations this year. I think everyone felt it was a bit of a struggle to take the scarecrows in on the Saturday night and have to prepare them for another viewing on the Sunday.

If you decide on a last minute entry and have nowhere to stand your scarecrow offering, we do have room behind the railings in front of the Parish Room. Ring me if you need a space for your scarecrow. With over 70 entries there will be plenty to see on the day, Saturday 5th May from 10 - 5.

The Parish Room will be open for our usual Saturday coffee morning from 10 - 12 then we will be serving scones with jam and cream from 12 till 4 p.m. Please call in - we are on the official Scarecrow route - and take the opportunity to put your feet up and relax in our lovely old building.

Although the Parish Room is very busy with regular bookings for Pilates, Yoga, Francophiles, WI, Nellie Stagles School of Dance and The Way Christian Fellowship, we do have vacancies for parties and one-off bookings as well as regular weekly or monthly classes and meetings, etc. Our prices have not been increased since we re-opened in January 2008. Not many public buildings can say that these days!

of us he spent too much time on Meditation and Haiku poetry and not enough on his Japanese garden. However, only a few escaped during the coffee break, and we all look forward to a return to plants, gardens, and floral decoration through the rest of the year. M ORE TRANSPORT

Good news on the bus front – when the next timetable changes come in at the end of April (Monday 30th),

service 205, on a modified timetable, will add a one-way circuit around Tickhill (Wilsic Road, Wong Lane, Westgate) to its roundabout route from Tickhill to Doncaster, via Stripe Road, a tour of Rossington and the Bawtry Road.. This will provide a Monday to Friday service towards Doncaster at 0749, 0952, 1122 and 1354 from the part of the town previously out of range of bus services. Return journeys leave at 1040, 1255, and 1705. There are more buses on Saturdays.

I’ve been reading the new National Planning Policy Framework to see what it says about transport. The section headed ‘Promoting Sustainable Transport’ lists a number of aims, including giving people a real choice of modes, encouraging solutions which reduce congestion and greenhouse gas emissions and reducing the need to travel. In more detail it suggests that priority should be given to pedestrian and cycle movements and that we should consider the needs of people with disabilities.

There are obvious applications of this locally. Sunderland Street has been much safer and easier to cross since the pedestrian islands were constructed a few years ago but both Northgate and Doncaster Road are difficult to cross; an island or two should be achievable. We have bus boarders at some stops but not at all; these are cheap to install but make life much easier for anyone with mobility problems.

The major traffic problem for Tickhill is west-east traffic on the A631. People in both Maltby and Tickhill have asked for a by-pass. I don’t think this is the answer, and not just because we wouldn’t get one! Which ever side of Tickhill it went, the land inside it would be developed and our easy access to the countryside lost. What makes more sense to me is to take advantage of the construction of the new road from M18 (Junction 3) to Parrot’s Corner. This link and the main road to Bawtry (A638) would be a much improved route from Sheffield and the M1 to Bawtry, Gainsborough and beyond. Get this signed as the route, downgrade the A631 to a local B road and we might be able to make our town centre, now so vehicle dominated, a better place for shopping and socializing.

T ickhill and District Local History Society At our March meeting Jane McCormish talked about the medieval archaeology of Lower Fishergate in Doncaster. This was the area now covered by the roundabout and surrounding road system leading to the new bridge over the River Don. In medieval times, before locks and canals, this was the highest navigable point on the river and the

archaeologists uncovered evidence of a busy trading port with the remains of several ships – at least one of which was thought to be seagoing. Once again archaeology provided a fascinating glimpse into the past – thank you Jane for a most interesting and well presented talk.

We have recently published another collection of Jack Burchby's newspaper articles, this time looking at 'Tickhill in the 1950s' and compiled by Nell Cookson. Jack's articles describing many activities for children and adults, including celebrations for the Coronation, as well as various events from problems with buildings to monitoring health, are accompanied by a good selection of photographs. This publication, price £2, is available from KSM Card Gallery. The closing date for this article is before our April meeting but in May we have a talk on “The Medieval Way of Death – 15th Century” by Jean Townsend. Sounds ghoulish but probably isn’t and Jean will be giving her talk in costume. The meeting will be at 7.30 PM on Thursday 17th May in the Methodist Schoolroom. Visitors will be most welcome and everybody is expected to leave the meeting alive!

In March/April (DTBC) Andrew Landells, Tickhill resident, will be taking part in the Marathon des Sables in aid of

Mencap, the UK’s leading learning disability charity. He has a target of £10,000 to raise over the next year.

This huge challenge will involve dubbed ‘the toughest footrace on earth’, covers approximately 150 miles over 6 days. That’s the equivalent of 5.5 marathons in 6 days in extreme conditions (think dunes, 50°C temperatures and sand…lots of sand).

The money he raises will fund the charity’s work with people with a learning disability and their families and carers.

In the run up to the main event he will be competing in several UltraRaces across the UK, with his first event the Grantham Canal Ultra, a two day event covering 58.6 miles in total, taking place in March.

Andrew Landells comments: “after watching James Cracknell’s ‘The Toughest Race on Earth’ I couldn’t get the idea out my head. If I manage to complete the event successfully it will be one of my greatest achievements, but doing it for Mencap will make it one of my proudest.”

As well as the epic 150 mile race across the Sahara in 2013, Andrew Landells has already completed the Grantham Canal Ultra, a 60 mile event over two days, and is currently training for the Cardiff Ultra and the Nottingham City Ultra.

Mencap is the UK’s leading learning disability charity. The charity works with people with a learning disability to change laws and services, challenge prejudice and directly support thousands of people to live their lives as they choose.

Our new 50th Anniversary Badges and neckerchiefs have now arrived and will be distributed to all current members of the Scout Group as soon as possible. The Cubs had a competition to design a 50th Anniversary Poster. The winning poster by Tom Bryant was a chosen by the cubs themselves and is now on display in the notice board outside the Scout & Guide HQ.

One of the aims of Scouting is not only to provide a safe environment for all its members but to equip its members with the knowledge and skills to help them to be safe in the presence of others and using electronic media. Both the cub pack and beaver colony joined together to learn from the local police about Stranger Danger and Keeping Safe. Each cub and beaver was also given a special booklet published by the Scout Association on the subject of keeping safe.

This month has been one where the old adage – “you don’t know what you don’t know” was very true. I was attending an explorer scout meeting when I was accosted by one of our members and reprimanded for not making mention in Tickhill Today or the Parish Magazine of an old, long established scout troop supporter who had recently died. Not only did I not know she had died but I had lost touch with her over the recent past. The lady concerned – Mary Cunningham – had in fact been a very hardworking and reliable supporter over many years. In the latter years her age and ability had made it impossible to help out. It was then, with some shock, that I discovered she had died. I am sorry her support had not been acknowledged but I hope these sentences will make some amends for my omission.

Whilst mentioning past supporters I would like to thank all those people who chose to remember the life of Jill Gunn by making a donation to 13th Doncaster (Tickhill) Scout Group. Currently this fund stands at around £600 including Gift Aided sums. It is very humbling to think that people who knew Jill have been so generous.

We have recently reviewed the number of youngsters who are members of our Scout Group and came to the conclusion that we are being held back by the lack of adult leadership in the scout section. As you probably know, each scout troop now has male and female members and each is led by male and female leaders.

To make scouting available to more youngsters in the village we are actively looking for more adults who would be prepared to give up some of their time to help out. Your age is no barrier, any time you have available can be used productively and, it may be your time which enables your youngster to become a scout much faster. Tickhill Town Council

Our Jubilee celebrations will soon be upon us and hopefully we can look forward to a celebration to remember. The Council has joined forces with other groups to put on a Fun Day at the recreation ground with something for everyone. Certainly not in our life time will we see another Diamond Jubilee and probably not our children’s either. The council are marking this event by giving every child at the primary schools in Tickhill a Diamond Jubilee mug. If anyone wishes to donate to the fund,

please do so, every little helps. Please make cheques payable to Tickhill Town Council and send to Clerks address. (Please no cash through the post)

As a consequence of this I thought it would be beneficial to organise litter picks and try and tidy up the Town and surrounding area. The first one took place on 23rd March and was a great success. The team collected 15 bags of rubbish, an old bike, fire extinguisher, a chair, old sign and lastly a traffic cone. One Councillor spent an hour picking up Pooch POO. If it was your dog, please clear it up yourself. It is dirty, disgusting and highly dangerous to people’s health. After we had finished we gathered at the Pavilion for light refreshments and a raffle, raising funds to help provide FREE LIGHT REFRESHMENTS at the Jubilee Celebrations. The next litter pick will be held on the 20th April and will have taken place by the time this publication has come out but I hope I will be reporting on another success. All are welcome at these events, no matter what your capabilities; it’s good to have moral support if nothing else. The 25th May looks likely for the last litter pick before the Jubilee but will be confirmed on the Website and a notice placed in the Council Display window in the Town centre outside the library. The raffle will continue to run and I will be selling raffle tickets from the 25th May which will be drawn at the Jubilee event, I do have some prizes but donations are always welcome, proceeds going to offset the cost of the Jubilee event. Lastly, having spent a lot of effort tiding up the recreation ground I was informed that families were beginning to have picnics there in the sunshine. So thank you everyone who took part; it WAS worth the effort.

I must take this opportunity to publically thank the Tennis Club, the Bowls Club, Football Team, Pilates and Yoga group who use the facilities. Your compliments were very much appreciated. I do hope we can work together in the future to build on what is a convivial relationship. Thank you.

STOP PRESS From our March Council meeting concern has been shown over the Bawtry Road Trees. This has now been addressed at a Public Meeting. The schedule of works will start autumn this year.
