Professor Chris Budd, Professor of Applied Mathematics at the University of Bath and a mathematician with a passionate interest in promoting mathematical understanding as widely as possible, will explore the role of maths in human civilisation from ancient times and speculate on the question of its role in the future.

Restorative justice gives victims the chance to meet or communicate with their offenders to explain the real impact of the crime, empowering victims by giving them a voice within a controlled environment to talk about the harm that has been caused and finding a way to repair that harm. Claire McFadden, Restorative Justice Coordinator for Somerset, will talk about the role of the victim’s voice in the criminal justice system.

Simon Kuper’s first book, Football Againstthe Enemy, which won the William HillSports Book of the Year, set him on a path of writing about the world with an anthropologist’s eye. In his book Soccernomics, he and his co-author applyhigh-powered analytical tools to everyday football topics, looking at data in new ways to reveal counter-intuitive truths.

Term 2016. We are proud to present a rich and diverse series of events this term, designed to broaden the intellectual horizons of our pupils. Though many of the events are hosted by individual departments, nearly all are open to anyone who may be interested, whether or not they are studying the subject in question or in the Sixth Form. DramaHammerpuzzle Workshop on Thomas Hardy’s The Woodlanders4 October 2016, 4.00pm Meyer Theatre

Innovative theatre company Hammerpuzzle create re-imagined, accessible storytelling theatre using classical, historical and artistic stimuli. They bring stories to life in a generous, theatrical landscape by taking a stimulus, breaking it apart to find the heart, then puzzling it back together again in a new way. Hammerpuzzle bring their unique style to The Woodlanders, a tale that both intertwines and unravels misplaced affection, fathers and daughters, a woodland community and above all, love.

Artist Stewart Geddes will talk about his current work, which he describes as being embedded in an experience of the urban landscape. In the tradition of Picasso, he finds his inspiration walking and not seeking but finding.

Sport ScienceAaron Ryan, MillfieldPerformance Enhancing Drugs and the Role of UK Anti-Doping11 October 2016, 7.15pm Johnson Hall

The use of performance enhancing drugs in elite sport is an ongoing battle for anti-doping authorities such as WADA and UKAD, and we are never far away from a high-profile case of illegal drug use in major world games such as the Olympics. Millfield’s Head Physiotherapist, Aaron Ryan, is an official educator with UKAD and will talk about the work of UKAD as it strives to ensure a legacy of future generations of clean athletes through education, prevention and protection.

Rory Mangles, captain of the team that built the robot Nuts for BBC’s Robot Wars, returns to take a look at some of the technology used in his robots and demonstrate his latest creations.

Religious Studies and PhilosophyBill LewisThe Hero’s Journey9 November 2016, 7.15pm Johnson Hall Foyer

Artist, poet, and writer Bill Lewis has a rich and varied background in the disciplines of religion, myth, art and poetry. In this talk, he will discuss Joseph Campbell’s vision of the Hero’s Journey and apply his knowledge and experience to explain why so many ancient and modern religions tell stories that sound suspiciously alike, and how religious myths

are the basis of most films you watch today. If you want to know why Jesus’ life sounds like so many Egyptian, Norse and Greek Gods, or if you’ve ever wondered what the great religions of the world have in common with Harry Potter, The Lion King, Batman and The Hunger Games, this talk will reveal all!

A collection of songs, sketches and poems celebrating the wide range of languages studied at Millfield, all performed by language pupils.
