Welcome to the Millfield Rugby Sevens 2016 Millfield is proud of its history. The school has developed rapidly, nowhere more so than on the rugby field. We believe that rugby provides outstanding lessons for life – reliance on team mates, self-discipline, healthy and challenging exercise and respect for others. Sevens has gained in popularity and we are thrilled to welcome boys, visiting coaches, members of staff and families to the Millfield Sevens Tournament. We hope the day proves challenging and exciting and that all players and supporters leave knowing that the friendships developed during the day will be reignited in the years to come.

Craig Considine Headmaster

Welcome to the Millfield Rugby Sevens 2016 It is a real pleasure to be hosting the Millfield Sevens again this year and I hope you have an exciting and rewarding day. It is events such as this which can inspire and motivate young children to pursue their talents and dreams. Gareth Edwards OBE, Olly Morgan, Matt Perry, John Brake, Chris Robshaw and many other Old Millfieldians would have started their careers here on these very pitches and it is wonderful to see how engaged they still are with their old school and how the children are motivated by them and their achievements. Team sports in schools provides another dimension. It teaches them to work together towards a common goal, how to win and lose gracefully and the importance of perseverance. Today we will definitely see some of the stars of the future showing off their skills and aptitude for the sport. I am sure that all the teams involved will enjoy the competition and show a good sporting spirit both on and off the pitch. Whether your side wins or loses, I trust you will enjoy a super day of rugby and remember “It’s not whether you get knocked down; it’s whether you get up that counts” Vince Lombardi. I look forward to seeing you at the event. With best wishes

Shirley Shayler Headmistress

RULES OF THE TOURNAMENT

Teams are asked to provide touch-judges (except for all finals).

1. The competition will be played under R.F.U. Laws. 2. All matches, except finals, will be 5 minutes each way with a 1 minute interval. The finals

last 7 minutes. 3. Players must be: i) Under 13 on 1st September 2015 ii) Under 11 on 1st September 2015 4. Squads may consist of a maximum of twelve players. 5. Replacements and substitutes may play in matches according to R.F.U. Laws. A player replaced through injury may not resume playing in that match but may play in subsequent rounds provided the medical authority does not declare the player unfit to resume. 6. In the event of a sending-off, the player is not allowed to play again in the current

tournament and the team plays with fewer players for the rest of that game. The team is, however, allowed to start with 7 players for the next game(s). The use of temporary suspension (sin bin) for 2 minutes will be in force.

7. For a kick at goal, which shall be a drop kick, after a try, all but 1 of the opposing team must

assemble immediately within reasonable proximity of its own 10 metres line. 1 player of the opposing team will be required to be behind the goal line in order to retrieve the ball - that player may neither charge or jump with a view to preventing the goal. The side scoring a try will restart the game. (The italics denotes our local rule which will be implemented)

8. Please note that in the U11 competition, the New Rules of Play will be in operation. 9. League phase: - 3 points for a win; 1 point for a draw A team that fails to honour a fixture will be deemed to have lost 30 points to 0. The league position will be decided by: Highest number of league points. If still equal; a) Highest number of wins b) Result between two equally placed teams. c) Most points scored for d) Fewest points scored against e) Highest number of tries scored f) Toss of a coin 10. Knock-Out Phase If a match is a draw after normal time, toss for ends, then play until the

first score (i.e.“sudden death”) for a maximum of 2 periods of 5 minutes. If the match is still level the outcome will be decided by the toss of a coin.

11. Finals If a final is a draw after normal time, toss for ends, then play for a maximum of two

periods of 7 minutes until the first score (sudden death). If the match is still level both teams will share the trophy.
