What will the slogan be in 2012?

IntroductionLast year was a fantastic year in so many ways.

Millfield has been a Trinity examination centre for many years but this was the first year it was also a Cambridge examination centre. The new Cambridge exam course was very popular and we will continue to offer the three week Cambridge exam course in 2012. Results were excellent for students taking both Cambridge and Trinity (100%) exams and these students now have an internationally recognised language certificate to go with all their memories of a great stay on a Millfield English Language Holiday Course. The Easter course was enjoyed by all the students who attended and will continue next year.

The highlight for me last summer was ‘Millfield the Musical’, an idea which came to me late one evening during the course and which was developed by Stuart Whyte our social manager. Less than two weeks later the musical was performed by students and staff with singing, dancing and acting out the story of Paula and Vlad two fictional students on a Millfield summer course. The resulting performance was amazing with students and staff from all three campuses taking part and being watched and enjoyed by everyone else. If you haven’t seen our video wall on ‘The Zone’ please visit www.millfieldenterprises.com and see clips from the musical for yourself together with many other clips taken throughout the course by students and staff. Also on ‘The Zone’ you can see the photo wall and students can sign in to a secure messaging page. Many people have used our online booking service which offers quicker and easier enrolment. We are continuing to develop our website, so keep checking for further developments.

2012 will be a very exciting year and we are pleased to announce that the Russian Olympic swimming squad will be using the excellent sports facilities on campus prior to the Games. We have introduced a new course for this special year – English with Academy Athletics. Other new academies include, Fencing, Musical Theatre and Rugby. We are also pleased to say that we can again offer Early Bird weeks at Oxford, Millfield Prep School and for the first time at our Downside campus.

Hey everyone! I’m Zia from Bangkok, Thailand and I was at Millfield during the first four weeks of summer 2009 (I was 15 when I was there but now I’m 16).

Going to Millfield was a life-changing experience for me. Not only did it change my world view and perspectives of life, it taught me that anything is possible and it’s never too late to change.

My nationality is Thai but I was raised in an English environment (international school since kindergarten) so my cultures tend to clash with those of Asians’. I had a hard time fitting with my friends because we were all separated into two main groups: the international kids, and the Thai kids. I am originally Thai but because of how I was raised, I mainly speak English and thus pushed me away from the Thai kids who constantly spoke Thai. And also because I’m Thai, I was discriminated by the international kids since I’m not considered international to them. This is where I started to doubt whether I belong anywhere at all. I concluded that... no, I didn’t belong. But then that’s when Millfield came into my life. It was only the beginning.

When I entered Millfield (about 1 am of July 6, 2009), I really didn’t know what I was in for. The next morning I was sitting in the common room with a bunch of girls from all around the world whom I didn’t even know and didn’t really plan on being friends with. As time progressed I got to learn about each and every one of them; not only their personalities but also their cultures. I had the chance to meet new individuals who were all unique and mind-blowing! (Oleg, Misha, Anja, Alvaro, Erl, Naomi, Mara, Vasco, Cee, Mint, Eye, Son, Marilia, Mike, Eileen, Enrico, Martine, Emily, and definitely Mark... and the list keeps going on and on.) I never knew life could be so fun, challenging, and life-changing all at once. I thought I’d never find anyone ever again but now all my best friends are scattered across the world! I can actually trust them. That’s when I realized that I was right; I didn’t belong to any group. I was part of my own unique group that awaits others like me. And I’ll always be ready to welcome them... just like how Millfield welcomed me.
