It’s About…
LEADERSHIP LOGIC APPLICATIONS AVAILABLE
Leadership LOGIC is a two-day overnight leadership development program. It is open to all FSU students at no cost. No experience is required. You can develop leadership skills and knowledge through experiential outdoor group challenges and discussions while they focus on relationship building, ethics, creating social change, and exploring the dynamics of diversity and power. Participants will stay overnight in cabins at the Rez that have heat/AC and multiple bathrooms. For more information or to apply, check out their website. AMERICA’S SECOND HARVEST FOOD BANK OUTREACH PROJECT IS BACK
The Center for Leadership and Civic Education is excited to announce that we have resumed volunteering with the Second Harvest Food Bank through our Community Outreach Program. For a short while, the project was suspended, but now it is back up and running, thanks to our newest Outreach Facilitator, Brittany Wakefield! To participate in this service project, simply stop by the Center to sign up in the project binder, up to one week in advance of the project. This service project is every Monday, from 2:30-5:30pm. The sign up process is first-come, first-serve, and space is limited. Once signed up, just come to the Center no later than the scheduled arrival time (2:30pm) and transportation will be provided to and from the agency. You will be back on campus by the scheduled return time (5:30pm). VOLUNTEER WITH THE AMERICAN LUNG ASSOCIATION Volunteers are needed for the 2012 Fight for Air Run/Walk benefitting The American Lung Association. EVALUATION OF A LEADERSHIP ASSESSMENT John Carroll University is inviting you to complete an evaluation of a leadership assessment in the design process. Your completion of the evaluation form is voluntary and you may discontinue your participation at any time. This evaluation
should take about 25 minutes to complete. You will not be asked to put your name on the assessment and all information collected will be kept confidential. You must be 18 or older to participate. Information from the evaluations may be used in future research publications or presentations. If you want to know more about this project, please call me at 216-224-7072. If you have questions about your rights as a research participant, please contact the JCU Institutional Review Board Administrator at (216) 397-1527. Completion of the evaluation is your consent allowing me to use the data you provide in your evaluation for my research. They will provide you with a copy of this information sheet. CAMP BOGGY CREEK NEEDS SUMMER VOLUNTEERS Summer is right around the corner at Camp Boggy Creek and they need your help. An exciting opportunity awaits you: to come to camp with their campers not just for a weekend, but for an entire week or more of camp this summer. Spend time with their campers while they catch fish, climb the tower, ride horses, play mini golf, shoot some arrows, perform on stage, have a water gun fight or get covered with pudding, along with countless other fun activities for a week or more. Camp Boggy Creek is looking for a few good men and women, ages 19yrs. and older to volunteer and be a positive role model as a cabin counselor alongside our trained staff for one or more of our Summer Camp sessions with boys and girls ages 7-16 years old. WAKULLA CHRISTIAN SCHOOL IS LOOKING FOR SUMMER CAMP VOLUNTEERS Wakulla Christian School is offering to the community an Academic and Personal Enrichment Summer Camp for ages 3-14 from June 4 to August 10, 2012. They are currently accepting applications for volunteers for their summer camp program. They ask that volunteers commit to a full week of camp (Monday-Friday). Volunteers should enjoy working with children of all ages and abilities. If you have any special skills, like baking, music, foreign language, martial arts, or arts & crafts, please let them know if you’d like to share these with our campers. All volunteer applicants are required to complete a volunteer application form, provide a resume, and 3 references. Eligible volunteers will have a screening interview and be required to comply with the Level 2 background screening requirements (as defined in Florida Statute 409.175) and attend a camp orientation and training session. ASTORIA PARK NEEDS MENTORS Mentors are needed to work one-on-one with students who are struggling in core academic subjects at Astoria Park. A commitment of 60 minutes per week is required. Mentors are required to attend a mentor training session hosted by the Leon County Schools Volunteer and Mentor Office. CLUB DOWNUNDER AND INVISIBLE CHILDREN AT FSU PRESENT: KONY 2012 Invisible Children at FSU is co-sponsoring a film screening of "KONY 2012" with Union Productions. The event will be held in Club Downunder at 8:00pm (doors open at 7:30pm). Invisible Children representatives will be at the event to talk with students about the issues.
TOWN & GOWN TALLAHASSEE BEST PRACTICES FORUM ON ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
Mark your calendar for Thursday, March 22, when Town and Gown Tallahassee will present the fifth in a series of six town-hall meetings about making Florida's capital a better place to live and work. The upcoming presentation - at 7 p.m. in City Hall's commission chambers - will focus on economic development partnerships between town and gown. Presenters will be Tim Dempsey, planning director in East Lansing, Mich., and Charles Hasemann, executive director of Michigan State University's Innovation Center. The Michigan State Innovation Center shares space and collaborates closely with the East Lansing Technology Innovation Center, a city-operated incubator. Hasemann said the MSU center's purpose is to "create productive research and technology commercialization relationships between MSU and the private sector, connect regional entrepreneurs to the intellectual and technical capacity of the university, and participate in regional economic activity endeavors."For more information about the March 22 program or the TAG Tallahassee project generally click here or call Mike Pate at 294-1823. SAAIL – STUDENTS ACTIVATING ADAPTIVE AND INTERNATIONAL LEADERSHIP May 21, 2012 – June 15, 2012 Central & South America For Undergraduate Students Are you interested in furthering your leadership development? Do you have a passion for making positive social change? Do you want to learn about leadership in an international context? If so, join a group of undergraduate student leaders from across the world and take the adventure of your life aboard the MV Explorer, the home of Semester at Sea! ACPA and Semester at Sea have joined forces to provide this unique opportunity for student leaders. This program is designed to give students hands-on experience of working and learning collaboratively on a voyage through Central America and the Caribbean. With a focus on adaptive leadership, students will learn to help address major issues affecting our world that are in line with the United Nations Millennium Goals. Throughout the voyage, you will have the opportunity to meet and connect with others interested in positive social change, learn from an engaging faculty member experienced in college student leadership development, and participate in service-learning opportunities and site visits. FORGOTTEN COAST TOUR NEEDS VOLUNTEERS Bike Florida, Florida’s only state wide nonprofit cycling organization, needs volunteers for day one of their 2012 Forgotten Coast Tour. Bike Florida provides free bicycle education materials to elementary schools statewide. They also encourage cycling through events and community support. Our ride originates from the North Florida Fairgrounds on March 24th and heads east into Jefferson County for a 52 Mile Loop. We need 6 to 9 rest stop volunteers in three rural locations on March 24th from 8am to 5pm. Responsibilities include helping cyclists refill water bottles, distributing snacks, parking bicycles, having fun, and being cheerful. Two to three volunteers are needed at each rest stop. Detailed instructions and location maps are provided. A pre-planning meeting on March 22 is required. Your own transportation to rest stops is helpful but not required. VOLUNTEER AT CAPITAL CITY YOUTH SERVICES WITH OUTREACH Capital City Youth Services offers counseling and outreach services to youth and their families, and emergency shelter services to youth in crisis. Volunteers are needed to serve as positive role models and mentors, encouraging productive, positive behavior, spending quality time with the children there, and showing genuine concern for their futures. This agency was recently added to the Community Outreach Program’s list of service projects for the spring. The project will take place Mondays, from 4pm-7pm. To participate, stop by the Center for Leadership and Civic Education to sign up. The sign up process is first come, first serve, and space is limited. The sign up is available as much as a week in advance, to secure your place on the project. NEW OUTREACH PROJECT AT THE AMERICAN RED CROSS The Center for Leadership and Civic Education is seeking students interested in serving and supporting the local Capital Area Chapter of the American Red Cross. The Center has had a long-standing relationship with the local Red Cross and we have worked closely together on many initiatives in the past, but this will be the first time offering a Community Outreach Project to the American Red Cross. We hope this endeavor will help us to build a sustainable bridge and even stronger partnership between the Center and the American Red Cross. THE INSTITUTE ON PHILANTHROPY AND VOLUNTARY SERVICE HAS EXTENDED ITS DEADLINE The 2012 Institute on Philanthropy and Voluntary Service at Georgetown University is now accepting applications. This fast-paced, eight-week residential program provides students from around the world with opportunities to gain the edge in today’s competitive job market and graduate school admissions, experience the excitement of Washington first-hand, and dive into a summer of service in the Nation’s Capital. The level of discourse brought to bear on the challenges facing Florida is not always a civil one. Florida Matters: Spirited Dialogue on the Issues means to change that. The Florida Chamber Foundation, The Village Square and The Collins Center are coming together to facilitate an open, balanced and civil exploration of specific issues tied to securing Florida’s future. The first program on the topic "Government and Business Ethics" is Thursday evening March 15 from 5:30pm to 7pm at Challenger Learning Center on Kleman Plaza, downtown. Featured speakers are Jonathan Low of Predictiv Consulting and Dr. Dale A. Brill of the Florida Chamber Foundation. The event will include a social element with a three-flight wine tasting and an opportunity to discuss the topic in small groups. VISIT TALLAHASSEE MUSEUM WITH COMMUNITY OUTREACH The Tallahassee Museum hosts a variety of exhibits to promote knowledge and understanding of the region’s cultural history and natural environment. While touring the 52-acre facility, visitors can see many examples of the indigenous wildlife of this area, in the Wildlife Florida exhibit, and the animals that would have been on a typical farm in the 1880s in the Big Bend Farm area. The Outreach Program has just added the Tallahassee Museum to its list of service projects for students. On this project, volunteers have an opportunity to make enrichment items for the animals in these exhibits, as well as the animals used for kids’ programs. The items made will then be introduced into the animals’ habitats to help stimulate their natural, instinctive behaviors like digging, sniffing and scratching. This keeps the animals happy and healthy. If you enjoy being outdoors and would like to help keep the Museum’s animals content, you can sign for on Tuesday afternoons in the Center for Leadership and Civic Education. LEARN ABOUT THE GARNET & GOLD SCHOLAR SOCIETY Do you want to make the most out of your last year here at Florida State University within and beyond the classroom? Be recognized for your efforts by participating in the Garnet and Gold Scholar Society! The society facilitates involvement of the engaged, well-rounded student in the areas of Leadership, Internship, Service, International, and Research. A student who has met the criteria in three of the five areas and writes an approved Synthesis Reflection is eligible for consideration. Programming and mentoring efforts are being planned for the 2011-2012 school year. Any senior who has met or will meet the criteria listed at http://garnetandgoldscholar.fsu.edu/ by graduation is eligible to apply by completing an Intent to Participate form no later than 2 weeks into your final semester at FSU! The Fund for the Public Interest (aka “the Fund”) helps some of the top progressive organizations in the country work on issues like
clean energy, equal rights, and pushing our country in a new direction. Currently they're hiring Citizen Outreach Directors to run their grassroots campaign offices across the country next fall to work on behalf of groups like the US PIRG, Environment America, and the Human Rights Campaign. Are you interested in a professional development opportunity this summer? Are you interested in service to the local nonprofit community? Do you not already have an internship opportunity within your major/program? Do you have at least a 3.0 GPA? If you answered yes to these questions, the Center for Leadership and Civic Education invites you to apply for the Nonprofit Internship Program. Students can apply for a part-time or full-time internship for 6 or 12 elective credits. Upon successful completion of the internship, students will have a better understanding of the nonprofit sector, a heightened awareness of the community needs surrounding FSU, and greater professional development skills, all of which are great transferable skills that can be applied in any future career. THE PEARSON FOUNDATION AWARD The Pearson Foundation is proud to announce the application for the 2012 Pearson Prize for Higher Education. This award recognizing students who, while still completing their undergraduate studies, are distinguishing themselves by leading public service efforts that give back to their local community. SETH ROSSETTI MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Established in 2006, this memorial scholarship was created in memory of Seth Rossetti. The purpose of this scholarship is to support one undergraduate student who is presently or who was for a significant part of his/her life the child of a single parent. This scholarship is available to all current FSU undergraduate students with a minimum 2.5 cumulative grade point average and all incoming FSU freshmen with a minimum 3.0 high school cumulative grade point average. Applicants for the award must submit a pictorial collage of at least 10 but no more than 20 photographs/images that will communicate the student's sense of his or her personal identity and how he or she perceives the concept of diversity. Collages cannot exceed a size of 15” x 20”. The collage will be accompanied by an essay of no more than two to four pages describing the collage and explaining their financial need. One winner will receive a $1000 scholarship. Application materials can also be sent to. The poster should be mailed or delivered. Any questions concerning the scholarship can be referred to Robert Bryant or other CMA staff via e-mail or by phone at (850) 645-7504. The application deadline is March 30, 2012.
