ANNOUNCEMENTS WITHOUT WORDS IS LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS
The annual Without Words event will be taking place the week
of February 27. They are looking for high energy students
interested in helping spread the word about this week long
event. Promotion will take place during the weeks leading up
to the event as well as the week of Without Words. If you are

SOCIETY
Do you want to make the most out of your last year here at
Florida State University within and beyond the classroom?
Be recognized for your efforts by participating in the Garnet
and Gold Scholar Society! The society facilitates involvement of
the engaged, well-rounded student in the areas of Leadership,
Internship, Service, International, and Research. A student
who has met the criteria in three of the five areas and writes
an approved Synthesis Reflection is eligible for consideration.
Programming and mentoring efforts are being planned for the
2011-2012 school year. Any senior who has met or will meet
the criteria listed at http://garnetandgoldscholar.fsu.edu/ by
graduation is eligible to apply by completing an Intent to
Participate form no later than 2 weeks into your final semester

PHONE BANK VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
WFSU-FM is looking for volunteers to take calls during their
2012 Winter Pledge Drive from Friday, February 10-Friday,
February 17. Phone shifts are two to four hours long and
require four to eight phone bank volunteers. If you or your

BE A SEMINOLE FUTURES AMBASSADOR
Seminole Futures is the FSU Career Center’s largest Career
Exposition, with over 100 employers in attendance. It will be
held on January 26, 2012 from 9am-3pm at the Leon County
Civic Center. Serving as a Seminole Futures Ambassador will
allow you to gain an inside edge of this career exposition.
Volunteer times range from 7am-3:30pm. If you are

SPECIAL OLYMPICS SHOOT-A-THON
Special Olympics Outreach is hosting a Basketball Tournament
at Tully Gym this Sunday, January 22 from 10am-4pm. Special
Olympics Athletes need money to go to games and get
equipment. Special Olympics is a non-profit organization that
charges neither the parent nor the athlete to participate. All
proceeds from this Shoot-a-thon go to Special Olympics Leon
County athletes through Special Olympics Outreach. You can
register your own team with up to 7 members at $10 a person.

SAFETY FAIR WITH THE DORI SLOSBERG FOUNDATION
The Dori Slosberg Foundation is excited to announce the 2012
Geico Road Safety Bicycle Tour – “Survive the Drive” on
February 23rd, 2012. A press conference will be held on the
steps of The Old Capitol at 12 P.M., when the cyclists arrive.
Immediately following the press conference, a safety fair will
be held at Florida State University’s student union from 1 – 4
P.M. to educate students, faculty, staff and the overall
community on driving and highway safety. The safety fair will
include safe driving programs and information, booths,
giveaways, and more. The Foundation would like to encourage
students to get involved with the event by volunteering to help
spread awareness of the event, help set-up/tear-down,
distribute safety information, provide musical/dance/literary
performances, speak about driving safety or anything else
innovative to drive the message of safe driving home. Please

FLORIDA STATES MULTICULTURAL LEADERSHIP SUMMIT
The Multicultural Leadership Summit (MLS), held on the Florida
State University campus, is fast approaching! MLS focuses on
building a foundation of knowledge that will enhance student
success in leadership in the areas of multiculturalism and social
justice. They are seeking 10-15 volunteers to help the
conference run as smoothly as possible. They especially are
requesting for a few volunteers with technical skills (MAC and
Windows). Volunteers will not be required to work the whole
conference. You will be able to work in shifts. The Conference
begins at 9:30am and ends at 4pm on Saturday, January 28.

ATTEND THE FLA STUDENT LEADERSHIP FORUM ON
FAITH & VALUES
The forum will begin Friday, March 16th, 2012 with dinner and
will conclude Sunday, March 18, 2012 at noon. Participants
have the opportunity to share their concerns and ideas and
discuss the challenges you face in school as well as those in
leadership. The aim of this forum is to learn about servant
leadership based on the model of Jesus of Nazareth. This year’s
event includes hearing from state leaders, a tour of the House
Chambers in the Capitol, a community service project and the
return of their annual dodge ball tournament. The annual
Florida gathering is an offshoot of the National Student
Leadership Forum on Faith and Values in Washington, D.C.
which is hosted by the Leaders of the United States House and

SECOND ANNUAL KICK BUTTS KICKBALL TOURNAMENT
Join Tobacco Free Gadsden and Gadsden County Students
Working Against Tobacco (SWAT) as they host the second
annual Kick Butts Day Kickball Tournament on March 24. The
event will draw attention to the flavored tobacco issue and
other marketing strategies used by Big Tobacco to attract and
addict youth. Local SWAT chapters, businesses, and community
organizations will compete for first place in a friendly
atmosphere while learning more about Tobacco Free Gadsden’s
work in the county. Volunteers are needed to assist with set up
(8am-10am), registration, food distribution, tables, referring,
score keeping, clean-up, and even playing. Registration begins
at 10 am and the tournament will start at 10:30am. For more

THIRD-ANNUAL KRISPY KREME CHALLENGE
Founded in 2010 by members of the FSU Student United Way,
the Krispy Kreme Challenge is a new campus tradition based
on the NC State race of the same name. It is a race that
challenges individuals to run, starting from Westcott Fountain
through FSU's campus, to get to Doak S. Campbell stadium,
where competitors consume up to a dozen Krispy Kreme
doughnuts, and then finish the race circling back to Westcott.
The thousands of dollars raised from this event are put in the
hands of Student and Community Service Organizations to help
them achieve their local efforts. For more information, and to

FREE GRE, LSAT, & MCAT PRACTICE TESTS
Kaplan is offering a free On Site Practice test for GRE, LSAT, &
MCAT students. Students will get results back on the same
day. Kaplan’s National practice test will be held at FSU student
union on Saturday, Feb 18, 2012. Please go to this website to
register for the practice test. Kaplan will be donating $1 to
Doctors Without Borders for every individual who fills out a
lead card or the online form. Please go to this website and fill
out the information card.

Intellectual Decisions on Environmental Awareness Solutions
(IDEAS) is a new Registered Student Organization dedicated to
promoting environmental awareness and solutions to
environmental problems. This semester they have begun
working towards implementation of the Student Green Energy
Fund as well as organizing speakers and film screenings. They
are also planning a discussion on how to shop for local and
ethical food while on a college budget. For more information,

HARDHATS AND HIGHHEELS
Hardhats and High Heels is an initiative, hosted by FSU Habitat
for Humanity, which is dedicated to empowering women to
take action against poverty housing conditions. This event is
part of Women’s History Month and is an opportunity to bring
together women from across Florida State’s campus to build,
fundraise, and educate for Habitat for Humanity. They are
looking for female faculty and staff at FSU who would be
interested in participating in this half-day build. They will have
the opportunity to come together with colleagues and build for
a day on the FSU Habitat for Humanity build site. Not only will
participants be able to contribute to building a home for a local
Leon County family, but they will also have the chance to
connect with other powerful women and students around
campus. The deadline to register is January 31, 2012. For more

CAMPUS-COMMUNITY LUNCHEON
The Center for Leadership and Civic Education, SGA’s Office of
Servant Leadership, and the Directors of Volunteers Association
(DOVA) are sponsoring a luncheon in an effort to connect YOU
with local nonprofit and public service agency leaders. The
luncheon will be on Friday, January 27, 2012, from 11am-1pm.
RSVP is required to attend. This luncheon aims to provide
students with information about the opportunities available in
the nonprofit and public service sector, as well as about the
day-to-day operations and needs of nonprofit agencies, how
and why agencies depend so heavily on volunteers, what the
impact of volunteering has, etc. Students will also share with
agency representatives what they are doing to make a
difference in our community. To RSVP, complete a reservation
form and submit it to the Center for Leadership and Civic
Education on or before January 24. Forms are available at the

HARTSFIELD ELEMENTARY NEEDS VOLUNTEERS
Hartsfield Elementary needs volunteers to assist a teacher in
the classroom and tutor during school hours (Elementary math
& reading comprehension). They are asking for individuals who
are willing to complete a one-hour training, go through a
thorough background check before being matched with a
mentee, and commit one hour per week for the schools’

TUTORS & MENTORS NEEDED: SCHOOL OF ARTS &
SCIENCES
The School of Arts and Sciences is looking for a few tutors to
act as mentors for some middle school students in need of
building organization, reading and math skills. Due to the need
for these students to have mentors as well as tutoring, they
are looking for a long term commitment (this school year and
hopefully into the next). Tutors will meet with students during
the Extended Day program from 4-6pm. If you feel this may be

YOUTH RISING FOR PEACE VIRTUAL SUMMIT
The Youth Rising for Peace Summit will be held in an exciting,
worldwide 24-hour format, featuring key speakers in 30-60
minute presentations followed by ½ hour breakout groups for
discussion. The virtual Summit will acknowledge and celebrate
the positive roles youth are playing in their families, schools,
communities, nations and the world, as well as shine light on
the challenges youth are facing. The Summit will also be a call
to action inviting youth to participate in the Summer of Peace
2012. The Summit will start in New Zealand, near the
International Date Line, and travel westward as youth leaders
from different countries are interviewed every hour on the hour
for the full 24 hours. This will be the first world-wide youth
summit of this nature in history.
Registrants for Youth Rising for Peace Summit will be able to
participate for free in as many of the live discussions as they
like, as well as receive free access to the full library of
recordings afterwards. For more information about this event,

OAK RIDGE ELEMENTARY NEEDS VOLUNTEERS
Oak Ridge Elementary needs volunteers to assist teachers in
the classroom, help tutor children and help out at school
events/activities (Carnivals, parent nights, concerts, etc.).
They are asking for individuals who can mentor at least an
hour a week, willing to develop a consistent, positive, and
healthy relationship with the staff and children, and can
increase the self-esteem of students and overall academic

SUMMER FOOD SERVICE PROGRAM POSITION
AVAILABLE
The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services,
Division of Food, Nutrition and Wellness, which administers the
Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) wants to hire an
individual over the age of 18 to answer the telephones and by
using a computer, provide the caller with the location of a
feeding site. They are particularly interested in individuals who
speak Spanish as well as English so they can better assist the
callers. They are offering an hourly pay of $12 per hour and
need the phones covered from Monday-Friday, 7am–4pm,
beginning around the middle of May until early August. They
are willing to work around class schedules and other prior
commitments. This is strictly a summer position and would not
be a permanent full-time position. For more information,

INTERN WITH LEADERSHIP FLORIDA
Leadership Florida, a statewide community of leaders actively
engaged in understanding and serving Florida, is looking for an
intern to support staff within their communications
department. Duties include database management, IT support,
and assisting with the transition to a new content management
system and website overhaul. Interns must have a background
in communications and website development, a solid academic
record and strong writing skills. The position is located in
Tallahassee and part-time and full-time applications are
accepted. This internship is unpaid, but may be used for
academic credit. Internships will run from mid-January to mid-
April, but exact start/end dates are negotiable.
