SERVE AT JAMES SHANKS MIDDLE SCHOOL Are you bilingual? Do you enjoy working with children? Are you interested in serving the migrant population? If you answered yes to these questions, James Shanks Middle School needs you! Located in Quincy, Florida, just west of Tallahassee, Shanks Middle School is in desperate need of

volunteers/interns for a variety of services such as translation ability in order to welcome the Hispanic community into the school, allowing Hispanic students’ parents to participate fully in their student’s experience at Shanks, including translating papers routinely sent home to parents about their students, school events, etc; translation ability to allow Hispanic parents to communicate with school counselors about their student, and to merely communicate at the front office desk should they have a need; assisting the ESOL teacher as appropriate, tutoring the children with their coursework; and to translate for the “parent link”, a phone message system that goes out to

all parents with working phone numbers. If you are interested in volunteering or interning at Shanks Middle School, please contact Mr. Rick Soskis, the Coordinator for Gadsden Coalition for Change, LLC at (850) 539-5338 or (850) 567-0984.

LEAD OTHERS IN SERVICE! The Center for Leadership and Civic Education is currently seeking goal-oriented, self-motivated, service-minded students to facilitate service projects for the Community Outreach Program in the upcoming summer and fall semesters. The Community Outreach Program aims to offer at least one

service project every day of the week, at different times of day, that address a wide range of community issue areas, in order to appeal to as many students as possible. Being a facilitator requires a minimum semester-long commitment. Responsibilities include transporting FSU students in Center vans, so having a valid driver license, current auto insurance, and a good driving history are all needed. Other responsibilities include recruiting, informing, educating, supervising and encouraging the students on the project, helping them learn more about the needs of the community, discover what they are passionate about, and inspire them to continue volunteering. If interested, take a look at the current Outreach

schedule to know which projects you might be interested in facilitating. It is possible to add agencies to the schedule that we do not currently serve, if they are well-suited for the Community Outreach Program. It is ideal to have two facilitators for every project, in order to balance the load and responsibility of each facilitator and to insure the reliability of the projects. Contact Heather Stitely if you have questions or need any additional information. Hear from past facilitators by watching this video! If you are interested, please complete the facilitator application and return it via email at [email protected] or drop it off at the Center for Leadership and Civic Education at your earliest convenience.
