THE CENTER NEEDS YOUR HELP
Florida State will be hosting a Summer Luau Resource Fair July 11, 2012, on Landis Green from 11am to 2pm and the Center needs your help tabling! We are looking for students to come and talk about the Center and their experience with different programs for one hour shifts. If you are available, please contact Alison Slusarczyk at [email protected] or (850) 644-3342. THE TALLAHASSEE SQUARE HOSTS SUMMER CAMP WITH A CIVIC TWIST!
Three Sunday afternoons this summer, The Village Square invites you to help Tallahassee join Los Angeles, San Francisco
and Washington D.C. as one of only a dozen communities in the world to have a hometown wiki. TallahasseeWiki, online at www.tallahasseewiki.org, will become the story of Tallahassee – written by you. The project is part of LocalWiki, a John S. and James L. Knight Foundation funded initiative to share local information online about communities across America. It started in Davis, California where one in seven residents has now contributed to the wiki. There are no special skills required to edit TallahasseeWiki, so you easily can add information anytime about what you know and love about Tallahassee - your school, neighborhood, church, business or your favorite restaurant, artist or hangout. You only need to
register to use the site in order to add and edit pages. If you want to learn more, ask questions or write in the company of other residents interested in this project, Camp Wiki will meet June 24, July 15 and August 5 from 12:30pm to 3:30pm at RedEye in Midtown. Pizza and drinks will be provided and a RedEye barista will be on hand to keep participants caffeinated. You may attend one session or all three; please also feel welcome to drop in for part of a session. The program is free and open to the public. TALLAHASSEE ACADEMIC ENRICHMENT PROGRAM The Tallahassee Academic Enrichment Program is a comprehensive initiative bringing together education, cultural enrichment, service learning, and mentoring for high school students. Twenty-five high school students will be on campus from 8:30am-12:00pm, until June 21 (Monday-Thursday) for literacy instruction and campus-based field trips. They are
looking for FSU students to help out with supervising our
campus-based field trips, which take place from 10:30am-12:00pm. Please contact Dr. Lisa Scherff at 644-8476 or at [email protected] if you are interested. THE OASIS CENTER FOR WOMEN AND GIRLS IS LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS
The Oasis Center for Women and Girls’ Girls Can Do Anything! Summer Camp provides a space where girls get to celebrate, learn, grow, and thrive while developing expansive visions of who they can be and what they can do. The Center relies on volunteers to transport girls to and from field trips. They go on two to three field trips per week and can use your help!
Volunteer drivers must have proof of insurance, valid Florida driver’s license and a clean driving record. Do you have a skill, trade or experience you would like to share with the campers? If so, consider being a guest speaker! To learn more about the camp, please visit their website or call the Oasis Center at (850) 222-2747. You can also make donations of healthy snacks for the program inside the lobby of the Center for Leadership and Civic Education. FOLLOW THE MOELLERSHIPPERS AROUND THE WORLD!
The Moellership Program, named for its founder Bill Moeller, provides selected students at Florida State University the opportunity to focus 8–12 weeks of their summer of full-time service at a not-for-profit agency. Examples of past projects
include fighting homelessness in Tallahassee, food banking in London, caring for HIV/AIDS patients in Spain, constructing a technology center in Rwanda, designing and constructing a poultry production project at an orphanage in Tanzania, and promoting sustainability in Brazil. SOUNIQUE NEEDS YOUR HELP SoUnique Enrichment for Girls is looking for volunteers to help with their summer mentoring program. Assistance is needed until August 25, on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays
from 6pm to 8:30pm. If you have experience in modeling, please call right away, modeling instructors are needed. Contact Ms. Paula Lay at (850) 687-1610 or Mrs. Minesha White at (850) 980-0024.
COMMUNITY OUTREACH SUMMER SCHEDULE AVAILABLE!
The Community Outreach Program gives students the opportunity to get involved in community service on a regular basis, with projects to choose from almost daily. Projects are student-led and are offered at a variety of nonprofit agencies. Students can sign up for projects as early as one week in
advance and up to the day of the project. Space is limited so signing up early is strongly encouraged. To participate, stop by The Center to sign up in the project binders, and then arrive at The Center on the project date at the designated arrival time (according to the schedule). INTERNSHIPS & JOB OPPORTUNITIES
WORK STUDY WITH THE CENTER FOR LEADERSHIP AND CIVIC EDUCATION The Center for Leadership and Civic Education is looking for student assistants that qualify for work study. Student assistants are responsible for performing a variety of clerical
tasks that include answering telephones, responding to routine
questions, and referring calls and visitors to appropriate staff. Additionally, they are responsible for assisting in the maintenance of the departmental vans and maintaining the filing system for driver’s records. Student Assistants may also run errands, organize spaces, work at tabling events, and help complete short-term projects. If you are interested, please email
your resume, a copy of your work study authorization, as well as your availability to [email protected]. Students must be available between the hours of 8am and 5pm Mondays through Fridays. For questions, please contact Alison Slusarczyk at [email protected]. THE CENTER FOR LEADERSHIP AND CIVIC EDUCATION IS CURRENTLY ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR THE FALL 2012 NONPROFIT INTERNSHIP PROGRAM. Do you want to make a lasting contribution to a local nonprofit while earning 6 or 12 elective academic credits? Are you looking
for work experience related to your major? Are you interested in enhancing your professional skills? If you answered yes to these questions, you should consider applying to participate in the Nonprofit Internship Program. This
competitive program is designed for students from degree programs that do not presently offer an internship opportunity for academic credit. If you are from such a program and would like to gain valuable experience in a nonprofit organization, you are welcome to apply. Examples of internship focus areas include: child development, juvenile justice, health services,
education, counseling, elder services, domestic abuse, poverty, homelessness, environment, government, disaster service and more. Selected students will serve either full-time (36 hours/week for 12 credit hours) or half-time (18 hours/week for 6 credit hours), for the full 15 week semester. We will offer a limited number of internships for the fall, spring, and summer semesters, and applications will be considered on a first come, first serve basis until the internship slots are filled. For fall semester, applications must be submitted no later than Friday, June 29th by 5pm. For more information or to access an application, visit the NPI website.
KENNETH E. CLARK STUDENT RESEARCH AWARD The International Leadership Association (ILA) and the Center for Creative Leadership (CCL) are pleased to partner to sponsor the annual Kenneth E. Clark Student Research Award to recognize outstanding unpublished papers by undergraduate and graduate students. Submissions may be either empirically or conceptually based. Multi-disciplinary approaches to research are welcomed. The paper should focus on some aspect of leadership or leadership development. Papers must be authored
and submitted by graduate or undergraduate students only. All authors must currently be students or must have graduated within 1-year prior to the submission deadline of Friday June 15, 2012. CCL staff and papers submitted to other CCL awards are ineligible. Papers are limited to 30 double-spaced pages, excluding title page, abstract, figures, tables, and references.
Papers above this limit that are not completely doubled spaced may not be eligible for the Award and may be returned to authors unreviewed. Papers should be prepared according to current edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association. Entries (accompanied by faculty letters) must be received by June 15, 2012. The winning paper will be announced at the 2012 ILA Conference. Entries should be emailed to [email protected]. Information on past winners may be found online. Students are encouraged to use their best judgment when
selecting service opportunities. Opportunities are not screened before they are posted.
