This weekend we have a special offering for the home missions. Many dioceses right here in the United States do not have enough priests and trained lay ministers to serve their parishes. "Yo soy la vid, ustedes son los sarmientos". Este mensaje de Cristo parece ser muy directo e inequívoco. Sin mí, dice Jesús, perecerás. Así como las ramas separadas de la vid se secan y mueren, así también, cualquier persona que no esté en Cristo morirá. Mensaje simple ¿verdad? Personalmente, no creo que el mensaje sea así de simple. Nosotros como iglesia, el rebaño del que hablamos la semana pasada, somos desafiados este fin de semana a con-siderar aún más profundamente el misterio de nuestra unión con y en Jesucristo. La imagen de hoy, la vid y las ramas, había sido popular entre los profetas hebreos para describir la relación entre Dios e Israel; Isaías, Jeremías y Ezequiel revisan la historia del pueblo de Israel en términos de la figura de la vid. Así como los sarmientosse entrelazan alrededor de la vid, que es la fuente de su vida, también lo son las ramas inextricablemente entrelaza-das entre si mismas. A medida que la vid crece, sus jóvenes sarmientos verdes agarran y se aferran a otras ramas en busca de apoyo. "I am the vine, you are the branches." This message of Christ seems to be very direct and unambiguous. With-

out me, Jesus says, you will perish. Just as branches detached from the vine dry up and die, so, too, any-one not in Christ will die. Simple message right? I personally don't think the message is that simple. We as a church, the one flock we talked about last

week, are challenged this weekend to consider even more deeply the mystery of our union with and in Jesus

Christ. The image of today, the vine and the branches, had been a popular among the Hebrew prophets to describe the relationship between God and Israel; Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Eze-kiel review the story of the people of Israel in terms of the figure of the vine. Just as the branches are twined around the vine which is the source of their life, so also are the branches inextricably twined around one another. As the vine grows, its young green tendrils grasp at and cling to other branches for support. Gradually these tendrils grow into a permanently intertwined living mesh of fruit-fulness. So, what is the message of Jesus? Jesus identified the vine with himself, and all who believe in him are the branches of this vine. Organically bound to Christ upon whom they depend for life, believers or branches share in Christ's life, mission and union with God. We may pick and choose those with whom we want to share a friendship. We may decide what neighborhood we wish to live in and, therefore, who will be our neighbors. We may select what-ever social club or organization we wish to join. We may even choose the kind of people and atmosphere in which we will seek education or employment. However, as members of Christ and branches bound to the one vine, we are not free to choose or to discriminate against other branches or believers who are also bound to Christ, be-cause whether we like it or not, we are all in this together.

Yo soy la vid y ustedes los sarmientos Quinto Domingo de Pascua Semana del 29 de abril del 2018 Escucha la Palabra (Juan 15:1 – 8) Cuando escuchas la palabra proclamada hoy, ¿qué frases o imágenes del Evangelio te llaman la atención? Ve tu vida Pregunta para los niños: ¿Cómo te mantienes conectado con Jesús en tu vida diaria? Pregunta para los jóvenes: Jesús es la vid y nosotros los sarmientos, conectados con Él como nuestra fuente de vida. ¿Cuándo te sientes más conectado con Jesús en tu vida diaria? ¿Cómo puedes hacerlo con mayor frecuencia? Pregunta para los adultos: ¿En qué incide su propia conexión con Cristo, la vid, en su vida diaria? ¿Qué imagen de esta lectura lo ayuda a ver la importancia de esta conexión con Cristo? Actividades para la semana Tomen estas actividades para reflexionar más: Hagan un paseo familiar en la naturaleza y junten ramas de árboles. Cuando lleguen a casa, aten un cordel a las ramas y creen un juguete móvil. I am the vine; you are the branches Fifth Sunday of Easter Week of April 29, 2018 Listen to the Word (John 15:1 – 8) When you hear the word proclaimed today, what phrase or image of the Gospel strikes you? Look into your life Question for children: How do you keep yourself connected to Jesus in your daily life? Question for youth: Jesus is the vine – we are the branches, connected to Him as our life-source. When do you feel most connected to Jesus in your everyday life? How can you go there more often? Question for adults: How does your own connection to Christ, the vine, affect your daily life? What image from this reading helps you see the importance of this connection to Christ? Activities for the week Take these activities to further reflect: Go on a nature walk with your family and collect tree branch-es. When you get home, attach string to the branches and cre-ate a mobile. Remind each family member how Jesus is the vine, the support in each person’s life, and how we serve as branches to spread his word to all. Talk about ways we stay in contact with the vine that is Je-sus. Do we take time every day to pray? How often do we read the Bible? Is there a quiet place where we can go sometimes to be alone with God? Are we fruitful vines? Discuss at the dinner table a good deed that you will do for someone this week. Ask each family member to talk about how he or she will help spread the kingdom of God. Take time to visit a parishioner who is not able to come to Mass on Sunday. Perhaps you can read the Sunday readings with the person.

Quinto Domingo de Pascua 29 de abril del 2018 El tema común de las lecturas de hoy es la con-strucción de la Iglesia por medio de Cristo y el amor de unos por otros. En el Evangelio de San Juan, Jesús dice: “Yo soy la vid, ustedes los sarmientos.” En estas imágenes, Jesús es la vid que da los dones de la vida y la salvación a sus discípulos, las ramas o sarmientos. A su vez, se nos anima a se-guir sus mandamientos y vivir en él. Lo hacemos a través de la participación regular en su banquete Eucarístico. Jesús nos recuerda en el evangelio que Dios es glorificado cuando un discípulo, unido en Cristo, produce abundatemente y da muchos frutos. El discípulo debe, entonces, ser un buen corresponsable de esa abundancia. El buen corresponsable vive según el consejo de San Juan, amando en los hechos y en la verdad, en vez de hablar de ello nada más. Como corresponsables fieles en Cristo, daremos "buenos frutos" para el reino de Dios.

Fifth Sunday of Easter April 29, 2018

The common theme of today’s readings is building up the Church through Christ and love for one another. In St. John’s Gospel, Jesus states, I am the vine, you are the branches. In this imagery, Jesus is the vine giving the gifts of life and salvation to his disciples, the branches. In turn, we are encouraged to follow his commands and to live in him. We do this through regular par-ticipation in his Eucharistic banquet. Jesus

reminds us in the gospel that God is glorified when a disciple, graft-ed in Christ, produces abundantly and bears much fruit. The disci-ple must then be a good stewards of that abundance. The good steward lives the advice of St. John, loving in deed and in truth, rather than just talking about it. As faithful stewards in Christ, we will bear “good fruit” for God’s kingdom.

stewardship—sharing God’s gifts We are in need of Ushers — Hospitality Ministers!

Ushers extend hospitality by greeting and welcoming Mass attendees at the Church entrance ways. They assist attendees as needed with finding a seat, are responsible for passing around the collection baskets, and at the end of Mass are responsible for distributing the weekly bulletin. In addition, during commun-ion, they assist the eucharistic ministers by pointing out those who cannot pro-ceed through the communion line and therefore need communion brought to them. The goal of the usher is to provide an orderly environment for the commu-
