ALPHA…

What is Alpha? Alpha is a series of interactive sessions that explore the Christian faith. It is a parish tool to foster evangelization. Alpha is based on welcome and hospitality, sharing and prayer. Each session includes a meal, a talk and small group discussion. The Meal Offering a meal or snack is an essential part of Alpha. Participants are welcomed into a relaxed and friendly setting and have the opportunity to get to know one another. The Talk After the meal, a short talk is given on the Christian faith. The talks are based on the teaching of the Church, the Bible, and the personal testimony of the speaker. Topics vary from ‘Who is Jesus?’ to ‘How can I make the most of the rest of my life?’ The Small Group Conversation The small groups provide the opportunity to build trust and friendship. The role of the host (leader) is to facilitate discussion, inviting guests to share openly and honestly, without any criticism or judgment. Within the group, participants learn the art of liste- ning, reading the Scriptures and praying. The small groups often develop into prayer groups that may then become small Christian communities within the parish.

The Alpha Course Alpha is a practical introduction to the Christian faith, it consists of sessions where guests explore the meaning of life in a relaxed friendly setting. The course usually meets once a week for 10 weeks and includes a day of retreat in the middle of the 10 sessions. At each session people enjoy great food, fellowship, and learning about the teachings of Jesus Christ in a friendly atmosphere where no questions are seen as too

simple, to complicated, or even too hostile.

How did Alpha start? The Alpha course began in central London in the late 1970s as a means of presenting the basic principles of Christianity to new Christians. The Alpha course teaches only the basic bibli-cal teachings on which all Christians agree. Alpha for Catholic is the Alpha course hosted in a Catholic setting. Alpha is a practical tool that many parishes throughout the world have used to inspire Catholic renewal and to answer the call of Christ and the church to “go and make disciples of all nations.”

El Curso Alpha Alpha es una introducción práctica a la fe Cristiana, que consiste de sesiones donde los invitados exploran el significado de la vida en un ambiente informal y amisto-so. Of all the things that Jesus tells us about the way that we are to live our lives, what is the hardest thing for you to do? Why? Question for adults: As you wrestle with today's Gospel, what signs do you see in your own life that you are "with God." Activities for the week Take these activities to further reflect: ▪ Play one of your family's favorite games. As a reminder, outline the rules to the game before you begin. When you have finished playing it, play it again, but announce that there will be no rules. When you are finished, relate this to other rules in life and what life might be like if we had no rules. Talk about how rules help us live as God's children. ▪ Plan a family meal to celebrate a culture different from your own. Talk about how God loves all people of all cultures. Pre-pare foods and use table decorations to represent the culture of your choice. Involve all family members in preparing and serving the meal. ▪ Discuss with your family the need for discipline in your home. Review the family rules in light of the Christian call to live as children of God. Ask if any rules should be added. List any new family rules on a sheet of paper and place them on the refrigerator. ▪ Create a prayer space in your home and place a globe or map of the world in the center of the space. Invite family mem-bers to reflect on how God loves all people from all parts of the world.
