God gathering the People — Dios congregando al Pueblo

Dear friends, Today we hear how the prophet Isaiah offered hope to those returning from their exile when he expressed, "I come to gather nations of every language; they shall come and see my glory, and I will set a sign among them." The prophet Isaiah shares a vision of a caravan of nations being drawn by the Lord to Jerusalem where they will witness God's glory; then, commissioned by God, they will go forth to proclaim that glory to all the world. Each year, at Christmas and at Easter, many people from around the globe gather at Saint Peter's Square in Rome as the pope delivers greetings to the nations of the world. Among the thousands who gather for these events, the joy is obvious; the air is contagious with expectation. It seems as if each person present waits in joy to hear the key mysteries of our universal faith pro-claimed in his or her own language; there is, at once, a rich diversi-ty and a profound unity of peoples. There is a similar atmosphere of prayerful celebration and universal rejoicing similar to the one in our first reading from Isaiah. In the letter to the Hebrews, the author acknowledged the fact that those whom God gathers to himself will know struggle and suffering as they make their way to God. "Endure your trials as ‘discipline,’ for whom the Lord loves, he disciplines." Sometimes suffering is part of our training. All of us are called to suffer some-how, and sometimes someone from among us gives voice to the anguish and confusion each of us experiences in the face of inno-cent suffering. Even then we realize that God calls the people to-gether even in their suffering. In his book When Bad Things Happen to Good People, Rabbi Harold Kushner observed that "people have tried to make sense of the world's suffering in every generation by assuming that we de-serve what we get, that somehow our misfortunes come as punish-ment for our sins." I am one to believe that Rabbi Kushner came to the correct conclusion when he wrote that suffering is “an unavoida-ble aspect of an imperfect world where God allows human beings the exercise of their freedoms. If this freedom is poorly exercised, suffering often results." The readings today are concerned with the people of the earth coming together because it is God who calls them. The readings challenge believers (you and I) to rethink our own ideas about the universality of the world community, to remember that all are called by God to salvation. The Second Vatican Council affirmed this in The Dogmatic Con-stitution on the Church. The Council proclaimed that "all are called to belong to the new People of God. Wherefore this people, while remaining one and only one, is to be spread throughout the whole world and must exist in all ages, so that the decree of God's will may be fulfilled." (13) But if, indeed, all the earth's peoples, regard-less of race, gender, religion or politics, are to be revered as the People of God; then, how can exclusivism, classism, ageism, sex-ism, racism, nationalism, xenophobia or any other form of prejudice can be justified?

Of all the things that Jesus tells us about the way that we are to live our lives, what is the hardest thing for you to do? Why? Question for adults: As you wrestle with today's Gospel, what signs do you see in your own life that you are "with God." Activities for the week Take these activities to further reflect: Play one of your family's favorite games. As a reminder, outline the rules to the game before you begin. When you have finished playing it, play it again, but announce that there will be no rules. When you are finished, relate this to other rules in life and what life might be like if we had no rules. Talk about how rules help us live as God's children. Plan a family meal to celebrate a culture different from your own. Talk about how God loves all people of all cultures. Prepare foods and use table decorations to represent the culture of your choice. Involve all family members in preparing and serving the meal. Discuss with your family the need for discipline in your home. Review the family rules in light of the Christian call to live as chil-dren of God. Ask if any rules should be added. List any new fami-ly rules on a sheet of paper and place them on the refrigerator. Create a prayer space in your home and place a globe or map of the world in the center of the space. Invite family members to reflect on how God loves all people from all parts of the world. Have each family member write a short prayer for world peace on a sheet of paper and place it near the globe or map. Read the prayers out loud and finish by offering each other a sign of peace.

El Cuarto Mandamiento. “Honra a tu padre y a tu madre.” (CIC, 2196 — 2257) Los tres primeros Mandamientosnos ayudan a entender como amar a Dios con todo nuestro ser. Los siete siguientes Mandamientos nos enseñan a como amarnos los unos a los otros como nos amamos a nosotros mismos.El Cuarto Mandamiento trata de todos los aspectos de la vida familiar —los deberes y responsabilidades de los hijos para con los padres. Esto incluye los deberes de los hijos hacia sus padres, los deberes entre hermanos y las responsabilidades de los hijos adul-tos hacia sus padres mayores. The Fourth Commandment. “Honor your father and your mother.” (CCC, 2196 — 2257) The first three Commandments help us to understand how to love God with our whole selves. The next seven Commandments teach us how to love each other as we love ourselves. The Fourth Com-mandment deals with all aspects of family life— parental and filial duties and responsibilities, that is, those of love from child to parent. This includes the duties of children toward their parents, the duties of brothers and sisters toward each other, and the responsibilities of adult children toward their older parents. This Commandment also addresses the duties of government and the duties of citizens (CCC,

2234-2246), including the responsibility of the state and society to fos-ter family values and to strengthen the family in every possible way. THE DOMESTIC CHURCH The Catholic family as a domestic church is the fundamental com-munity or cell of the parish, the diocese, and the universal Church. Christ has called all family members to union with God through Bap-tism and the other Sacraments and to share in the mission of the whole Church. Family members carry out the Church’s mission by fostering mutual love in the home and, through that love, by building up the com-munity of the Church and society. The Christian family is called to be a community of faith, hope, and love in an environment of prayer. Aided by a number of other virtues, such as prudence, justice, fortitude, and temperance, the family that practices them begins to actualize its spiritual calling as a domestic church. When a family becomes a school of virtue and a community of love, it is an image of the loving communion of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. It is then an icon of the Trinity. What is Alpha? Alpha is a series of interactive sessions that explore the Christian faith. It is a parish tool to foster evangelization. Alpha is based on wel-come and hospitality, sharing and prayer. Each session includes a meal, a talk and small group discussion. ¿Qué es el Alpha? Alpha es una serie de sesiones interactivas que exploran la fe cristiana. Es una herramienta parroquial para fomentar la evangelización. Alpha esta fundamentado en la acogida y la hospitalidad, el compartir y la oración. Cada sesión incluye una comida, una charla y dis-cusión en grupos pequeños.

Bible Study on Thursdays The Lectionary-based Bible Study is Thursday morning at 9:30 a.m. and Thursday evening at 7:00 p.m. in the Parish Center. All are invited to come and explore the Sun-day Scripture and how they impact our daily lives.
