Field Development Approach

INTECSEA can provide expertise to assist in the

earliest stages of leasing and exploration to identify

business and technical solutions that will enable

clients to turn their assets into profits. INTECSEA

can also offer assistance over the life of any field

during expansion, optimization and decommissioning

phases. The systematic and logical approach to

project feasibility studies employed by INTECSEA

specialists provides field economic and scenario

modeling based on information sourced from

accessible industry data, shared experience and

lessons learned from past projects. INTECSEA and

WorleyParsons field development specialists are

available to assist clients with every type of study,

from fast high-level screening estimates to more in-

depth concept-select exercises and workshops.

Feasibility and Concept-Select Studies

Maximum value is achieved by executing preliminary

geotechnical, flow assurance, field architecture and

cost estimating studies during the early phases

of reservoir characterization, techno-economic

appraisals and technology gap reviews. Framing

workshops are held to discover the client’s

primary drivers and risks, and to rank potential

development scenarios against these drivers. Field

development concepts are vetted by performing

qualitative and quantitative technical evaluations,

risk assessments and life-cycle economics. INTECSEA

and WorleyParsons maintain cost and schedule

databases for a large range of development solutions

that can provide valuable benchmarking input.

The impacts of key drivers and risks are assessed

through sensitivity analysis using client guidelines.

Each identified development option is optimized to

minimize uncertainties by applying our deep project

experience in conjunction with client technical staff

and industry technology suppliers.

Subsea and Surface Facilities

Production and process facilities are the backbone

of an efficient and successful development. Proper

flow system modeling over the field lifecycle is a

crucial key in every development. Working together

with the client team, INTECSEA specialists strive

to model the entire flow system from downhole

through surface facilities and sales. Processing

simulations are run to find the best system

options to satisfy production efficiency, flexibility,

expandability, reliability and cost standards. Study

of system capabilities, technical readiness and

qualification requirements will be a significant part

of the appraisal of surface and subsea production

and process facilities. Wherever technically and

economically preferred, proven equipment will

be selected; care must be taken to assure that a

mandate of allowing only traditional technology does

not lead to shortcomings during the project lifecycle.

In some situations, compact surface facilities may

be considered and in other cases, Subsea Active

Production Technologies (SAPT) – such as separators,

pumps, compressors or electric flowline heating –

may enable a development to be commercially viable.

Fixed and Floating Structures

Selecting the appropriate solution for the surface

facilities of an offshore development requires a clear

understanding of overall project drivers and intimate

knowledge of the full suite of available technologies.

Traditional offshore platforms often offer the most

effective facilities solution for shallow to medium

water depths. For marginal fields the traditional

solution of a platform may not be optimum; a tieback

to an existing host, a minimal satellite platform or

even a direct flowline to a land based facility may

be more attractive. All options should be rigorously

evaluated in the concept-select phase. INTECSEA

is at the forefront in furnishing solutions for the

full range of floating systems, including Floating

Production, Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessels,

Semisubmersibles and Tension Leg Platforms

(TLPs). WorleyParsons provides fixed platform

and processing facilities expertise, including the

modularization and integration of floating systems.

The Group has a strong track record of working

with major fabrication sites, specialist integration

dockyards and leading shipyards for the delivery of

fixed and floating structures and topsides elements.

Operational Support

Full field development does not stop after the

initial design, build and install phases. System-based

evaluation studies should continue throughout the

project lifecycle to support operations, integrity

management, brownfield improvements, secondary

recovery and decommissioning. Our field development

specialists and discipline teams are available to

support clients throughout all project phases.

INTECSEA is a world leader in Tension Leg Platform

(TLP) designs. In addition to providing detailed

design for the initial TLPs in the Gulf of Mexico,

INTECSEA has been instrumental in the design of

16 out of the 21 currently sanctioned Tension Leg

Platforms. INTECSEA matured the development of

the MOSES TLP, which was the first to meet new

hurricane criteria in the Gulf of Mexico while setting

water depth records. Other notable projects include

wellhead and drilling TLP designs using tender

assisted drilling and conventional production TLPs,

all designed to meet specific project needs.

TLPs are a preferred floating systems concept

for operators who require dry trees and platform

drilling, primarily because the design offers vertical

access to subsea wells. Additionally, the design’s

benchmark ratio of steel weight to payload makes

it one of the most efficient floating platforms in

the industry. TLPs are the third-most used type

of floating production facility in the world and are

ideal for a broad range of water depths. The unique

tension leg mooring system allows for horizontal

movement with wave disturbances, but does not

permit vertical or bobbing movement. This makes

TLPs a popular choice for stability.

Tension Leg Platforms

INTECSEA is a global leader in SPARs floating

system design. In the Gulf of Mexico, INTECSEA

has participated in major portions of 10 SPARs,

including Genesis, Diana, Medusa, Devil’s Tower,

Front Runner, Constitution, Red Hawk, Holstein,

Mad Dog and Mirage. INTECSEA is the only

engineering company with execution experience

in all three SPAR types and has designed SPARs to

record setting water depths.

The SPAR floating production platform is an

important concept for situations that support dry

trees in deepwater and for harsh environments. The

deep-draft design makes the SPAR less affected

by wind, waves and currents, enabling the facility

to support both subsea and dry tree developments.

Additionally, the enclosed cylinder acts as protection

for risers and equipment, making SPARs an ideal

choice for deepwater developments.

Variations to the original SPAR design include the

cell and truss approaches. The cell approach utilizes

several smaller diameter columns in lieu of a single

large diameter hull. Both approaches strive to reduce

construction costs and possibly transportation costs

by increasing competition of capable fabrication

yards (cell SPAR) or by reducing the amount of

material required (truss SPAR).

SPARs

Page 20: INTECSEA Capability and Experience brochure

The semisubmersible floating platform is an

important concept for drilling and production,

particularly for heavy payloads in ultra-deep

water. Semisubmersibles offer the convenience

of near shore completion and integration of the

topsides, and are stable in tow to site. INTECSEA's

experienced designers have participated in 17

semisubmersible projects.

One of INTECSEA’s innovations is its unique and

proprietary integrated hydro-structure-drafting

suite that links the hydrodynamic load-generation

models with the structure models and the structure

models with the 3-D design models (PDMS). This has

the capability to generate 2-D AutoCAD design and

shop-level drawings from the PDMS model.

Semisubmersibles

INTECSEA’s moorings system expertise encompasses

all types of floating systems, including tendons,

catenary systems, taut and semi-taut systems,

synthetic moorings, hawsers, drag embedment

anchors, suction anchors and pile anchors.

INTECSEA enhanced the industry standard tendon

system for TLPs and executed the delivery of

tendon systems for six installed TLPs, the most in

the industry. INTECSEA’s expertise includes tendon

global design, component design and specification,

fabrication and installation management, and

specialty installation equipment.

As a leader in the industry, INTECSEA is responsible

for the execution of the industry’s first catenary

and hawser mooring system for a Tender Assisted

Drilling (TAD) vessel working with a TLP and has

designed three such systems working in the field.

INTECSEA’s unparalleled analysis capability paired

with a multi-body, fully coupled model is matched

only by practical experience on tendon and mooring

components, which ensures that robust and fit-for-

purpose components are used.

Mooring and Tendon Systems

Page 21: INTECSEA Capability and Experience brochure

INTECSEA’s semisubmersible project engineering experience includes conversions and upgrades of existing

vessels for both drilling and production, as well as new vessel design of production facilities. INTECSEA has

also completed engineering studies and detailed mooring system designs for semisubmersibles in drilling

and production applications.

Page 22: INTECSEA Capability and Experience brochure

Containing up to 20% of the world’s future

hydrocarbon reserves, the Arctic is a vital future

resource and a technically challenging opportunity.

Unique pipeline design aspects for Arctic conditions

include analysis of the potential effects of Arctic-

specific environmental loadings (ice scour, strudel

current scour, permafrost) and the effective use of

limit state design for extreme loading conditions.

Evaluation of these challenging design-loading

conditions and use of a limit state design philosophy

have been successfully used by INTECSEA for

offshore Arctic pipelines. In fact, INTECSEA has

executed the only offshore oil pipelines in the

US Arctic and has completed recent projects with

flowline bundles to manage the considerable

thermal challenges.

Oil and gas pipelines on the Arctic Ocean continental

shelf must typically address trenches up to 6m

deep for seabed ice gouge protection and floating

construction equipment working only during a two or

three month summer open water season. However,

the design and installation of three existing pipeline

systems work with the cold Arctic winter conditions

to reduce pipeline costs and minimize adverse

effects on the fragile marine environment.

INTECSEA has engineered all three pipeline systems

in the Beaufort Sea using innovative design

approaches and is presently supporting the energy

industry as planned conventional and subsea field

developments move deeper into the Arctic Ocean.

INTECSEA also actively supports its clients in

planning for offshore subsea and pipelines in the

Arctic, and has assisted in clients’ tenders for leasing

new Arctic offshore acreage. Its floating systems

expertise has also been active in developing floating

solutions for Arctic and other ice covered waters.

The development of composite steel and concrete

gravity based designs that handle Arctic ice loads

are part of concept development for clients planning

Arctic drilling and production facilities.

Arctic DevelopmentINTECSEA offers over 30 years of expertise in cold weather and Arctic capability for the design and

construction of oil and gas production facilities located in remote, hostile environments.

The world’s largest deepwater transportation system was executed in the Gulf of Mexico by INTECSEA for

BP. The 320-mile export pipeline deepwater segment of the Mardi Gras System provides oil and gas export

pipelines for five major fields (Thunder Horse, Mad Dog, Holstein, Atlantis and Nakika) with the deepest

located in 7,250 ft. and with diameters up to 28-inches. We have engineered and supported the delivery of

the industry’s largest and deepest SCRs for the project’s two SPARs and three semisubmersibles.

INTECSEA adopts the proven WorleyParsons Quality

Management Systems and WorleyParsons Project

Management Process toolkit, scaled for the project

size. Project execution demands an accurate and

reliable interface register, which serves as an

enduring record of the complexity of offshore

development. The Interface Management System

(IMS) contains the necessary procedures, workflows

and links to formal project document depositories

and has proven to be a key tool to enable successful

project delivery. The tool is active in many leading

We consider technology to be more than just a discipline in our business. It is the fundamental enabler for oil and gas developments

in deepwater and hostile environments. Technology

defines who we are. It requires keen awareness and

understanding of the latest developments in our industry

from equipment and tools to processes, and the foresight

to initiate these developments. But, most importantly it is

sharing that understanding and know-how and the ability

to apply cumulative industry knowledge to actual field

developments and production scenarios.
