Our aim is to reduce postharvest losses, improve quality and safety, extend shelf life and increase marketability and profitability throughout the supply chain of horticultural crops worldwide.

Packaging plays an important role when it comes to protecting and handling fresh produce. Evaluating novel and innovative packaging is one of our great interests and areas of expertise.

We’ve worked with a wide range of packaging companies who are looking to develop new applications for existing products and/or develop new solutions to the constraints facing the fresh produce industry i.e. reducing produce and packaging waste.

Our team has experience with:

• Modified atmosphere packaging (MAP; passive and active)• Moisture regulating products e.g. moisture absorbance pads and films• Biodegradable and recyclable films• Antimicrobial products (films, labels etc.)• Ethylene scavengers• Carbon dioxide and oxygen scavengers• Time-temperature indicators• Freshness indicators• Suspended tray packs to reduce mechanical/vibration damage

The Greenbean team has significant experience in both the development of postharvest treatments and their application through out the supply chain.

We have worked with a number of technology companies who are developing novel solutions to reduce postharvest losses caused by insects and diseases, mechanical damage and physiological disorders e.g. browning reactions.

Post Harvest TreatmentsWe offer the following postharvestservices:

• Investigate the efficacy and acceptability of new and emerging technologies• Optimise new and existing postharvest treatments• Develop new applications

Choosing the right variety or cultivar is of importance to plant breeders, growers, importers and retailers alike.

We can provide the following services for varietal assessment:

• Sensory profiling of cultivars as part of the varietal selection process e.g. selecting a mango variety which does not have a strong turpentine aftertaste, or a potato variety that is suitable for making frozen chips

• Consumer testing of products to determine consumer acceptance e.g. selecting a variety of blackberries to suit a particular market

Varietal Assessment• Testing new varieties in terms of handling, storage and shelf life. It’s important that products can be handled and stored in an efficient manner without any deterioration in their quality and shelf life

• Chemical analysis of the volatile and non-volatile compounds in fresh produce which contribute to their quality

Our aim is to help our customers understand the full extent of the benefits that their technology could bring to the fresh produce industry, as well as identify shortfalls at an early stage and advise them on potential solutions.
