Brothers and Sisters,
Mark's gospel shows Jesus' reaction to the news of John's arrest. God doesn't
approve of man's violence which is never a true reflection of who he is created to be. John the Baptist preaching repentance from sin was seen as a threat to some as it challenged them to acknowledge God as the ultimate authority. Their solution was to silence him by putting him to death. Today, our acceptance of a culture of death and an over encouraged preference for convenience makes for a lethal combination. That which we determine is inconvenient to us is usually quickly disposed of by the most convenient method. Sadly this is true also with unwanted pregnancies. Even though God has clearly revealed that all human life is sacred and we have been duly taught that we "shall not kill", humanity raises its hand in violence and takes the lives of innocent babies in their mother's wombs. While adoption is a viable alternative, it isn't as convenient as abortion. Parents and grandparents are often those who decide, for the good of another, this innocent child must die.
How many children are aborted?
Abortion was legalized in the USA on January 22, 1973. "Worldwide, 55 million unborn children are killed every year. Around the world, every day 150,685 children are killed by abortion; every hour, 6,278; and every minute, 105. Those are the reported cases.If you are an American citizen, no doubt your greatest interest is in your own nation, as is mine. Let me break the abortions down to a national statistic: 1,600,000 babies are aborted in these United States every year. Per day, that’s 4,383; per hour, that’s 183; per minute, there are 3."Sanctity of Life, C. Swindoll, Word, 1990, p. 13
Let us pray and work for an end to abortion, a stronger culture that values the sacredness of each human life, and a stronger willingness to help those who are unexpectedly pregnant. Let us never tire of standing up for our unborn brothers and sisters.

Hermanos y hermanas,
El evangelio de Marcos muestra la reacción de Jesús ante la noticia del
arresto de Juan. Dios no aprueba la violencia del hombre que nunca es un verdadero reflejo de quien es creado para ser. Juan el Bautista que predicaba el arrepentimiento del pecado fue visto como una amenaza para algunos, ya que les desafió a reconocer a Dios como la autoridad final. La solución fue silenciarlo poniéndolo a muerte. Hoy en día, nuestra aceptación de una cultura a la muerte y una preferencia excesiva por la conveniencia hace una combinación letal. Lo que determinamos es inconveniente para nosotros es generalmente rápidamente eliminado por el método más conveniente. Lamentablemente esto es cierto también con los embarazos no deseados. A pesar de que Dios ha revelado claramente que toda la vida humana es sagrada y hemos sido enseñados a "no matar", la humanidad levanta su mano en la violencia y toma la vida de bebés inocentes en el vientre de su madre. Today we begin a stretch of Ordinary Time that will last almost two months. Except for today, all the Sunday Gospels will be from Saint Matthew, and all, including today, will be about Jesus’ early public ministry. Let us travel with Jesus these coming weeks as he sets out to proclaim the reign of God, eager to listen and learn what it means to be a disciple.

Jottings from Father Joseph Jesus the Lamb of God that Washes Away Our Sins
Bishop Fulton J. Sheen, when he was a young priest, was appointed as
the parish priest in a small parish. One summer afternoon, he was sitting in the confessional. A woman came and knelt and said, "Hey, Priest! Relax. I did not come to make a confession. I came here because of that old lady-my mother, who insisted that I go for confession. I'll just kneel here for five minutes and then go away." "What is you name, the Priest asked? Agatha," she replied. "That's' a lovely name", continued the priest: Agatha means good or kind. The lady giggled and said, "I am a bad girl; the worst in this town. I just came out of the prison and I am in the flesh trade. When I was in the prison, I fell for your holy stuff. I prayed to your God to free me, but
He did not answer me. He was too busy for the likes of us, I suppose. Do you want to hear further," asked the lady? "Yes, go on," replied the priest. "Then I prayed to the devil," continued the lady, "I promised the devil that I will take nine sacrilegious communions and he should free me. I took communion and cursed God-aplenty. Do you believe-I got freed on the eight day. What do you say to that, priest?" The devil got a good bargain, said the priest, "He gave you freedom and then in return he got you immortal soul. But Agatha! Believe me, you are not completely lost. You still have love in your heart. You are here because of your mother. That means that you still love your mother. Any one with even a little love in the heart is not lost. Stay with me here and all this can be blotted out like a bad dream." A faint moan came out from her. She started breathing heavily. " That's enough. I am getting out. You can't do anything about it," she said. She got up and began to walk out. " Stay here and please pray," pleaded the priest. But she went out. As she was going out, the
priest shouted and said, "I am going to wait for you here, and I am sure that you will come back." The priest continued in the confessional. He asked everyone who came to the church to pray for a special intention. After all the confessions the priest knelt down and started praying. Many hours passed. One after another the people moved out of the Church. The sacristan put off the lights and wanted to close the Church. The priest was still praying. He took the key from the sacristan saying that he would lock the Church. Hours passed- it was almost midnight. Then he heard the same trotting of the sandals. Joy filled his heart. Joy filled his heart. Agatha came and knelt next to him. She began to weep. She poured out her sins to him. She got cleansed. She was a new person again. Hats off to that priest. He forgave and reclaimed that lady in the name of Jesus. Jesus the Lamb, washes away our sins by His blood.

El obispo Fulton J. Sheen, cuando era un joven sacerdote, fue
nombrado párroco en una pequeña parroquia. Una tarde de verano, estaba sentado en el confesionario. Una mujer vino y se arrodilló y dijo: "¡Eh, Sacerdote, Relájate, no vine a hacer una confesión, vine aquí por esa vieja, mi madre, que insistió en ir a confesarme, me arrodillaré aquí por cinco minutos y luego me ire. " "¿Cómo te llamas, el Sacerdote preguntó, Agatha," ella respondió. "Es un nombre precioso", continuó el sacerdote: Agatha significa bueno o amable. La señora se rió y dijo: "Soy una mala chica, lo peor de esta ciudad, salí de la cárcel y estoy en el comercio de la prostitucion." Cuando estaba en la cárcel, me enamoré de tus

What identifies a steward? Safeguarding material and human resources and using them responsibly are one answer; so is generous giving of time, talent, and treasure. But being a Christian steward means more. As Christian stewards, we receive God's gifts gratefully, cultivate them responsibly, share them lovingly in justice with others, and return them with increase to the Lord.
Disciples as Stewards - Let us begin with being a disciple—a follower of our Lord Jesus Christ. As members of the Church, Jesus calls us to be disciples. This has astonishing implications:• Mature disciples make a conscious decision
to follow Jesus, no matter what the cost.• Christian disciples experience
conversion—life shaping changes of mindand heart—and commit their very selves tothe Lord.
• Christian stewards respond in a particularway to the call to be a disciple. Stewardshiphas the power to shape and mold our
understanding of our lives and the way in which we live.
Jesus' disciples and Christian stewards recognize God as the origin of life, giver of freedom, and source of all things. We are grateful for the gifts we have received and are eager to use them to show our love for God and for one another. We look to the life and teaching of Jesus for guidance in living as Christian stewards.

¿Qué identifica a un mayordomo? La salvaguardia de los recursos materiales y humanos y su uso responsable son una respuesta; Así es la generosa donación de tiempo, talento y tesoro. Pero ser un mayordomo cristiano significa más. Como mayordomos cristianos, recibimos los dones de Dios con gratitud, los cultivamos con responsabilidad, los compartimos amorosamente en justicia con los demás y los devolvemos con aumento al Señor.
Discípulos como mayordomos - Empecemos por ser discípulos, seguidores de nuestro Señor Jesucristo. Como miembros de la Iglesia, Jesús nos llama a ser discípulos. Esto tiene implicaciones asombrosas:• Los discípulos maduros toman una
decisión consciente de seguir a Jesús, sinimportar el costo.

Just as Jesus called the first apostles, He calls each of us to follow Him, too. Not everyone is called to leave their business or family behind, but we are expected to put God first in everything. Everything from our time in daily prayer, our talent in participating in one of our parish ministries and our treasure to support the financial needs of our parish mission.

Vocations Ministry Thank You from the Seminarians
The generosity of Sacred Heart parishioners produced 56 gift cards that were sent to seminarians in our archdiocese. Over the holiday, we received several “thank-you” notes from seminarians who had received our cards. Deacon Truong Son Nguyen (St. Christopher), Jose Alonso (Prince of Peace), Joey White (St Michael, Lake Jackson), and Luke Prihoda (St Michael, Houston) were among those sending their thanks for our gifts AND our prayers. “Your generosity is a beacon of God’s love” is how Luke phrased it. And, each one of them promised to include us and our parish in their prayers! Let us continue to thank God for each of these men who will someday serve us as parish priests, and let us pray that more individuals answer the call!

Adult Faith Formation Committee
Following Jeff Cavins well-received visit to Sacred Heart last September, the Adult Faith Formation Committee will offer a new Jeff Cavins Bible Study for eight weeks beginning Wednesday, February 8, 2017, from 7-9 pm and on Thursday, February 9, from 1:00 to 3:00 pm (following the 12:10 pm Mass) in the St. Teresa of Calcutta Room. The study will last for 8 weeks ending on April 5/6 with a break on March 1 and 2 for Ash Wednesday. SVDP está abierto los sábados por la mañana de 10:00 am a mediodía para proporcionar comida y ropa a los trabajadores pobres o aquellos que no pueden llegar a nosotros durante la semana.
