Students were smiling and happy to return to school and find out who their teachers for 2020 were. We also welcomed our Kindergarten students, looking so smart and ready in their new uniforms. We have had a great start to the term and I am looking forward to the learning opportunities students will experience across the year. Our Meet the Teacher afternoons occurred in Week 3. Over the past few weeks we have noticed many students walking or riding to school. It is great to see the children being active in the mornings and afternoons, but I ask for your support in ensuring their safety. All children that ride a bike or scooter must wear a helmet and walk their bike or scooter across the road and when in the school playground. Students can lock their helmet to their bike or carry it with them to the classroom. Safety to, from and during the day is always a high priority and we appreciate your support in ensuring every child is cared for. 01 Term 1 2020

Welcome to the 2020 school year. It has been wonderful to welcome back our existing students and families as well as the new families to Harcourt across Years 1-6. Students were smiling and happy to return to school and find out who their teachers for 2020 were. We also welcomed our Kindergarten students, looking so smart and ready in their new uniforms. We have had a great start to the term and I am looking forward to the learning opportunities students will experience across the year. Our Meet the Teacher afternoons occurred in Week 3. Many families came to introduce themselves and find out relevant information for the year ahead. We also had a welcome back morning tea organised by the 2019 Parents and Citizens Association (P&C). Between the coffee and cake, the P&C executive spoke about their role in the association and the highly valued contribution the P&C has to the organisation, resourcing and direction of the school. I encourage membership and attendance at these meetings, as many new friendships are made while you partnership with us to provide a high-quality educational environment for every student. Stage 1 – Years 1 & 2 Issue 01 – Term 1, 2020

Our Stage One team have loved meeting their new class members and families this term. We are super excited to start this new year of learning.

Did you know this amazing fact? Our Stage One team has over 116 years of combined service. They can’t wait to use these skills to help each student reach their learning goals for 2020.

The students are excited too. Each class shared what they are looking forward to in 2020.

2T want to have a classroom where we learn and do our best. We will be kind, friendly and respectful to each other. We will work hard every day, smile and have a fun year of learning in 2020.

The future is bright in 2B!! Our class is very excited to learn more about our planet in Geography. We are very keen to learn our times tables to become faster at math problems. As a class we would like to do more science experiments in year 2 and we can’t wait to learn about all the creepy crawlies in our school playground. We are a creative bunch and would like to express our artistic side through more visual arts. 2B are very eager to build lasting friendships and practise our school PBL expectations.

1A are looking forward to -following our new classroom rules.

In 2L we are looking forward to a fun year of learning! Reading is very important so we are going to read LOTS of books. We also want to practise writing every day so we can create interesting and creative stories. In maths, we want to explore four- digit numbers and become experts at addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. We are excited to learn about mini beasts in science. We want to stay fit and healthy all year so we can’t wait for our weekly sports activities!

IC are looking forward to learning about the habitat and the external features of living things. We want to learn new things everyday to grow and help others.

This term 1K are looking forward to so many exciting things! We are eager to learn about minibeasts such as ants, snails and dragonflies that we may find in the school playground and at home. We cannot wait to do lots of art, learning about Ken Done and use many bright colours when we make our pictures just as he did. Most of all, we are looking forward to making many new friends and becoming Harcourt Heroes at school every day.

Stage 2 – Years 3 & 4 Issue 01 – Term 1, 2020

Welcome back to school for 2020. The Stage Two team hope everyone enjoyed their holidays and we are looking forward to showcasing different events and learning opportunities our students are participating in as the year continues.

With all the interesting topics and events Stage Two will be participating in this year, some students were asked to share one thing they were most looking forward to in 2020:

Stage 3 - Years 5 & 6 Issue 01 – Term 1, 2020

It has been an exciting four weeks for all of our students and teachers in Year Five and Year Six. The Stage Three teaching team have enjoyed getting to know the students, learning about their talents and interests. We look forward to showcasing our learning journey as the year progresses.

The 2020 Stage Three Teaching Team

During Term 1, Stage Three students will be learning about the following:

• English – Students are learning about texts that inform. They will read and compose a variety of information texts that relate to our science, geography and creative arts units of work, and examine the grammatical features employed by skilled writers.

• Mathematics – Students are expanding their repertoire of strategies to solve addition and subtraction problems. They are also learning about mass, 24 hour time, position, number patterns and place value.

• Science – In our unit titled ‘Desert Survivors’ students are learning how living things grow and adapt to survive in desert environments.

• Geography – Students are exploring countries in the Asia region, including their climate, geography, culture and connections with Australia.

• Creative Arts – Students are examining the work of visual artists and creating artworks using the element of line.

• Personal Development and Health – Students are developing their understanding of ways to lead healthy, safe & active lifestyles, learning about water safety, road safety, emergency procedures and basic first aid.

EAL/D News Issue 01 – Term 1, 2020

EAL/D - (English as an Additional Language or Dialect)

EAL/D supports students in our school to build the English language skills needed to access all learning. We do activities that help our students to build oral language, and improve reading and writing skills in English.

Community Language Issue 01 – Term 1, 2020

2020 Chinese CLOTE Program Overview

The Chinese CLOTE programme will focus on using authentic language indicated in the NSW Syllabus for the Australian Curriculum that is delivered through topic-based programmes. The following is the scope and sequence for each stage. Early Stage One By the end of Early Stage One students interact in Chinese with their peers and teacher through action-related talk and play-based activities. Stage One By the end of Stage One, students interact in Chinese with their peers and teacher to exchange greetings and simple information. Stage Two By the end of Stage Two, students interact with others in Chinese to share information and participate in guided classroom activities that involve following instructions and collaborating with peers. Stage Three By the end of Stage Three, students interact with others in Chinese to exchange information and opinions. They engage in classroom activities and collaborate with peers to plan a group activity or share an event.

Chinese Mandarin Classes are taught to native speakers for two hours per week.

Our non-native speaking students also have an opportunity to learn Mandarin in non-native classes.

2020 Korean CLOTE Program Overview The Korean program for 2020 will focus on authentic Korean as indicated in the new Korean Syllabus. It will be delivered through interesting and relevant topics to the students’ everyday life. The Korean program is designed to provide the students with educational opportunity to learn linguistic and cultural understanding of the Korean language and Korea. Students will be experiencing diverse and interesting activities for each topic for the improvement of their literacy skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. The students’ progress will be closely monitored and recorded through various formative and summative assessments. Early Stage One By the end of Early Stage One students identify key words and specific information in simple spoken and visual texts and share information. Students compose simple spoken and visual texts. They also describe aspects of self and their family background, and their own prior learning and/or experience of Korean. Term 1 - School life + Korean consonant Term 2 - My family + Korean vowels Term 3- All about me + Body parts Term 4 - Familiar places + Colours Stage One By the end of Stage One students locate and organise key points of information from simple spoken, written, digital and visual texts by using modelled sentence structures in Korean. RFF Teachers Issue 01 – Term 1, 2020

Release From Face to Face (RFF) Teachers At Harcourt Public School, we have four teachers who release teachers from their class two hours per week. During this time these teachers complete programmed activities relating to literacy, numeracy, history, geography and science.

These teachers work with class teachers and executive staff to develop programs and activities that are linked to stage based curriculum and current units of study.

As well as RFF capacity, these teachers are also involved in teaching enrichment and sports groups.

Teaching RFF classes in 2020 we have:

Mr Glenn Bowling is new to Harcourt in 2020 and has quickly established himself with the classes and routines at Harcourt. He works 4 days per week (Mon-Thurs) and will be taking classes from K-6.

Mrs Loulou Virgona is an experienced classroom teacher and works at Harcourt 3 days per week (Mon-Wed). As well as undertaking the RFF role, Mrs Virgona will also be working with the English as an Additional Language / Dialect (EAL/D) team assisting students with their study and application of English.

Ms Christina Thanogianis is a well known teacher at Harcourt, having taught on Early Stage One in 2019. She works 5 days a week and will also share a teaching load with K/1R on Thursdays.

Ms Julia Tsaridis has been working at Harcourt since 2019 and is an enthusiastic and motivated teacher. She works at Harcourt 5 days a week. Ms Tsaridis will also be teaching the Greek language as part of her RFF role in Stage Two and Three.

Library News Issue 01 – Term 1, 2020

Our library has produced so many wonderful memories over the years….from being lost in an amazing book to being swept away into another time and place to learn more mind blowing facts about something new.

So it was time to refresh our space so that it could be home to building many MANY more amazing moments for our students, teachers and community …. where we can get lost in our imagination, research interesting facts, be creative and collaborate together to learn and grow at Harcourt.

Watch this space evolve to a new exciting learning space for us all at Harcourt.

Harcourt Expectations Issue 01 – Term 1, 2020

What is PBL?

Positive Behaviour for Learning is a comprehensive, integrated whole school approach focussing on student wellbeing and behaviour. PBL provides a framework for the school and its community to collectively support the wellbeing of every student.

This term students have been actively creating rules within their classrooms and learning about how to be responsible, respectful, safe, active learners through explicit lessons.

In Weeks 3, 4 & 5 students are learning to wear their uniform with pride, learning how to report problems to a teacher and how to be inclusive.

We can:

Week 4

• Ask the teacher for help when we need assistance.

• Tell the teacher if someone else is causing a problem.

• Use the 3 step system

We can:

Week 3

• Identify our correct uniform; summer and winter.

•Wear a school hat.

•Sit under the COLA or courtyard if you do not have a hat.

Parent Information Issue 01 – Term 1, 2020

The Child Safety Handbook helps to raise awareness of child safety issues that all families face, and what can be done to prevent these risks. The handbook enables people of all ages to develop strategies to help them deal with difficult situations.

Alternatively, the Child Safety Handbook App is available for download onto your electronic devices. It includes everything you need to protect our most valuable and vulunerable resource – our children. From preventative measures at home to safety outdoors, from cybersafety to dealing with peer pressures, this App is a resource for every family and scool community.
