Homestyle Model - challenges

• Balancing the model of care with the required security

• Patients living in these houses are expected to carry out their own everyday living activities as much as possible, supervised, guided and risk assessed by the staff responsible for their care

• Maintaining the level of supervision required (Requires appropriate staffing levels for supervision)

• Finding staff who fit in with the homestyle model and are committed to making the model work

• The secure environment is complimented by chosen meaningful and purposeful activities. This is manageable because of the relatively high staff to patient ratio

• Each patient has an individual seven-day activity programme reviewed regularly and detailed in his or her care plan

Homestyle Model - benefits

• good quality of life

• lots of activities – therapeutic & leisure

• Sense of pride / ownership

• Preparation for community

• Helps promote the therapeutic relationship between the clients and the staff as the required security is discreet but effective when necessary, and the environment non-confrontational.

• It also helps the clients who may previously have come from dysfunctional family situations to experience the positive as well as the negative aspects of sharing a home with others i.e. building relationships, mutual consideration, having company

• As a result of the choice and variety of activities provided and the structure in which they are delivered the patient’s energy is converted positively and the service experiences a lower level of aggressive behaviour than may be anticipated.
