Milton of Campsie

The following maps demonstrate the spatial strategy for the Milton of Campsie trails.

The heritage and proposed trails are presented on two maps per area:•Map 2A - Existing heritage locations•Map 2B - Existing heritage locations plus proposed trail routes hubs, lures, interpretation, markers, viewpoints.

The heritage that has been mapped is the information which has been uncovered by the Trails and Tales team through the life of the project from desk research, site visits and community consultations. It is not an exhaustive list but a snapshot of heritage which has been communicated as important in the life of the area. Through the process of matching locations and heritage stories, many important sites have been noted on the following maps. Only heritage which has a place or site associated with it has been shown in the list and maps, however the project does have repositories of other heritage information for each area which are for now ‘place-less’ but may inform the production of artistic responses in other ways.

Trail themes

Industrial and production heritage of MOC (Milton of Campsie) emerged strongly from the consultation and could form a theme including printing works, tartan works, pulp works, ceramics, and mills. These are highlighted in orange in the heritage list above. Fresh water is also a product of MOC with the various dams, and engineered watercourses providing a useful supply.

Trail description

The suggested trail start is at MOC Cross where a car park and nearby bus connection allows easy access. From the junction of Campsie Road, Antermony Road and Birdston Road the route crosses Campsie Road and heads north up School Lane. At the crossroads the trail takes a left alongCraigheadRoad, passingtheschoolandplayingfieldsonthelefthand side. The trail follows Craighead Road around the sharp right hand bend and continues as this road becomes a track and emerges from the housing area. The trail continues on this route, climbing steadily away from the village amongst trees, and after a short distance the route emerges from tree cover and emerges into open landscape with views to the south. The track takes a sharp left and orients towards the Campsies to the north, crossing a cattle grid. The trail continues on this track for around 500m loosely following the route of a burn with the hills in front providing scenery with farm buildings dotted around the landscape. As the track becomes parallel to the burn there is a farm track to the left which the trail turns onto, conditions underfoot at this point become less reliable as the track is less substantial. The trail continues onthistrackforashortdistancebeforethetracksplitstoformafieldentrance and a separate pedestrian track. The trail continues along this, surrounded by some woodland and passing wetlands to the north. The trail follows the route of former water control and management systems of dams and lades which can still be seen in parts. The route heads downhill through denser woodland crossing the burn and on towards Alloch Dam. From Alloch Dam the trail joins the Glorat House track, and follows this until the junction with the main road at Campsie Road. The trail turns left onto Campsie Road, towards the village centre, for a shortdistancebeforetakingarightpastValleyfieldandontoaninformalpath which leads towards the Glazert Water and climbs up onto the Strathkelvin Railway path which bridges the water. On arriving at the railway path the trail turns left to follow the path eastwards, with the path following the line of the water. On reaching the disused Milton of Campsie railway station the station steps can be used to ascend back to road level and the short distance along Birdston Road back to the cross. Alternatively the southern MOC loop can now be commenced.

For the South loop, starting from either the cross or the railway station, the route follows Birdston Road southwards until Cairnview Road on the right hand side. The trail continues on Cairnview Road passed the end ofthehousingareaandonthroughafootpathflankedbymaturetreeson either side. The trail crosses Laburnum Drive and continues along the footpath to approach the moss. The trail then turns immediately left to follow the back of the housing. The trail then heads towards Redmoss Road but turning right onto a further path before reaching the road. The trail follows this path through some housing and then circles the south-western edge of MOC for approximately 1km before turning left at Birdston Nursing Home to emerge on the drive to Kincaid House. Trail-goers could take a short detour to the left of around 50m or so here to visit Kincaid House. Once at the drive, the trail turns right to follow the drive to the junction with the main road, Birdston Road and turns left to head back towards the village centre. The trail follows Birdston Road for a short distancebefore turning right intoKincaidfield. Soon after,a footpath on the left hand side takes the trail towards open amenity grassland to the rear of houses on Glenburn Crescent. The trail heads across the grassland area to a wooded area and path down towards the Glazert Water and the Strathkelvin Railway path. The trail turns left onto the railway path and follows it back to the site of the railway station from where the same directions as the north loop apply to return to the cross.
