Hewitt's Meat Processing, Inc. started in business back in 1939 with two employees in Lindsey, WI. Shortly after returning from World War II, Marvin and Crystal's son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Evelyn Hewitt, took over operation of the company and they operated and expanded the company until 1992. In 1992, Jim and Evelyn retired from the business and sold it to Tom and Barb Tasse, Jim and Evelyn's son-in-law and daughter who continued the success of Hewitt's Meat Processing.

Entering the fourth general of ownership, Tom and Barb's son-in-law and daughter, John and Amanda Franseen, employ 17 full-time and part-time employees with a state of the art process-ing facility producing 15,000 pounds of products a week.

Through the years, Hewitt's Meat Processing has opened a retail store, built a new location, and expanded into Tomahawk.

John and Amanda are very active in the community and donate their time and products to many local organizations, athletic programs, youth sporting events, and many other non-profits.

They are supporters of the United Way's NOW program, St. John's Catholic Church Parish Pull, MACCI's Dairyfest and Business After 5's, to name a few.

In 2019, Hewitt's Meat Processing developed a holiday pack-aging distribution of cheese and sausage filling a void in our community.

Marshfield Medical Center Credit Union (MMCCU) Operations Manager Carol Ku-libert celebred 25 years at MMCCU on February 22. Prior to that, the Central Wisconsin native had worked in banking since 1978. She loves working for the credit union because the focus is on helping members. As a closed charter, not-for-profit financial institution dedicated to exclusively serving the financial needs of employees in the medical commu-nity and their immediate families, MMCCU is uniquely designed to serve this particular demographic.

Columbus Catholic Shares News The Board of Directors of the Wisconsin Religious and Independent Schools Accreditation (WRISA) is pleased to announce the accrediation of Columbus Catholic Schools located in Marshfield. Columbus Catholic Schools has proven compliance with WRISA education standards and is a member in good standing. All religious and inde-pendent schools in Wisconsin that have been in operation with students for at least two years and meet extensive eligibility criteria may apply to WRISA for entry into the accreditation process. Schools must complete a compre-hensive year-long Self-Student, host a Site Visit by a team of peers, and develop and implement a Long Range Plan for school improvement. Schools that are accredited enter a seven year cycle. During that time they submit Annual Reports to the Board of Director that detail their progress in meeting their yearly goals. In the sixth year, schools conduct a new Self Study. This is followed by another Site Visit and the submittal of a new Visiting Team Report and Long Range Plan to the WRISA Board of Directors in the seventh year. Congratulations!

Columbus Catholic Schools was recently awarded a $2,000 Healthy Schools Grant by the Mission: Healthy Kids program, a partnership of Children's Wisconsin and Kohl's Cares. Twenty-five Wisconsin schools have received this grant to be utilized during the 2019-2020 school year. Colubus Catholic Middle and High Schools applied to further their work in the area of mindfulness.

Today I'm thrilled share the news that we have taken a major step toward acquiring St. Clare's Hospital in Weston with the signing of a definitive agreement with Ascension. As we first communicated last fall, Ascension will also transfer 50% interest in the Diagnostic & Treatment Center (DTC) in Weston and Flambeau Hospital in Park Fall's to Marshfield Clinic Health System.

There remain certain regulatory and Catholic Church approvals needed to complete the sale. However, we antici-pate taking ownership of the facilities in late spring.

Acquiring St. Clare's, Flambeau Hospital and the DTC will help us advance our strategic imperatives of smart growth, service excellence, quality and safety and stewardship. This is a positive move for our patients, families and communities, our System, and our providers and staff.

Bringing an integrated model to the Wausau/Weston area will help us provide more convenient, coordinated care and enhanced patient experience. We have already seen the success of our integrated approach in Marshfield, Eau Claire, Neillsville, Ladysmith, Rice Lake and Beaver Dam.

This is not just our mission in action. It is our vision to define the future of health care for generations. I'd like you all to join me in reflecting on the incredible progress we've made over the last several years and how we have truly changed the face of health care across Wisconsin.

Five years ago we owned 1.5 hospitals. Once we assume ownership of St. Clare's and Flambeau Hospital and fin-ish construction in Minocqua, we will have nine hospitals up and running. This is all the more impressive because we've done it at a time when many organizations are pulling out of rural health care and rural hospitals are closing across the country.

All of you have sacrificed to get us to this point. You've worked long hours, dealt with significant changes and pushed through the uncertainty that comes with any major transformation. And because of you, we have brought a new level of care to rural Wisconsin and helped ensure that our communities will have access to excellent health care well into the future.

Timeless Tales Presents: People Who Make a Difference! On Saturday, March 7th at 7:00 p.m. the Friends of the Marshfield Public Library will share stories, poems, and music about/by remarkable people when their annual Timeless Tales presents: People Who Make a Difference! They will celebrate their 19th event in the Drendle Room of the Second Street Community Center.

People make a difference in science, industry, art, and nature. People affect us at a personal, mystical, or global level. The list of folks who fit the bill is endless. A few of the pieces to be read by community members are authored by or about Albert Einstein (science), Abraham Lincoln (Gettysburg Address), Ellen DeGeneres (parenting), Temple Grandin (autism, animal care), Aldo Leopold (environment), and Ruby Bridges (civil rights).

Dean Markwardt will again serve as our Master of Ceremonies. Musical ensemble Joe Finamore, Wayne Jellish and Christy Anna round out the evening with rhythm and fun. Be sure to remain after the event to share in the ever-popular refreshments and desserts.

Now in its nineteenth year, this evening of readings and music is sure to give you pause as you reflect on those world-wide, national, and local figures throughout the ages who have made a mark on our existence. As you return to your day life, you may find yourself asking who has made a difference in your life as well as how will you make a difference to those around you.

Hospice Volunteers Needed Hospice is about living each day to the fullest. It's about helping individuals dying of terminal illness live each day in a pain-free environment, with dignity and peace. As a hospice volunteer, you can be a part of this incredible journey.

Ascension at Home is offering a free, comprehensive training course for individuals who are interested in becoming hospital volunteers. Volunteers are assigned to roles dependent on their individual interests and abilities, as well as avail-ability.

They are currently in need of front desk and kitchen help at the House of the Dove in Marshfield, This is about a two-hour commitment per shift. In addition, there is a growing need for patient support volunteers in our entire service area includ-ing Wisconsin Rapids and Marshfield. They are also seeking sewers in the this areas for the Memory Bear Program.

Volunteering for patient support with hospice is unique. After complet-ing training, approved patient support volunteers are assigned based on patient need. The frequency and duration of patient specific assign-ments varies according to case specifics. This service allows for a great amount of flexibility and tremendous opportunity for personal growth.

Personal training and ongoing support for all volunteer positions will be provided. The next training will be offer in Marshfield (Thursdays) March 12, 19 and 26 from 2-5 pm.

Derby Day Pub Crawl Offered Join us on Saturday, May 2 for Marshfield's first Derby Day Pub Crawl. Online registration opens on March 15 and cost to participate is $25. Transforming Services, Transforming LivesThe words “community” and “connect” have been featured in many of ODC’s materials over the past few years, and with good reason. ODC has been transforming from a “place” where people with disabilities go to receive ser-vices to a “resource” that provides individuals with disabilities the opportunities and support they need to connect to their communities in both work and life.

It was almost 10 years ago when we first made the decision to move toward a more community-based model of services. We implemented more services and added more staff to assist individuals in our center-based programs in exploring their interests, evaluating their skills, and obtaining and maintaining community employment.

The next stage of our transformation was about creating new ways for people in our center-based programs to explore and become more active citizens in their communities. We implemented Community Prevocational Skills Training, which offers soft skills training, job shadowing, internships at local businesses and volunteer opportuni-ties. Community Day Services, which helps individuals explore their communities, make connections with others who share their interests and increase their independent living skills, has also been very successful in helping people connect with their communities and take steps toward community employment.

We continue to transform, and our ODC team has done an amazing job of developing options outside of our center-based programs. We are a very different organization than we were ten years ago, and yet we have always vowed to never leave anyone behind. We will continue to serve individuals in our Beginnings program, which includes center-based and community-based one-to-one goals, strengths and skills exploration, training and support for individuals with significant challenges in adjusting to social or work environments. Our Center-Based Day Services program will continue to be there for those who prefer engaging, skill-building activities that take place primarily in our centers.

Throughout our transformation, we have also grown to serve more people than ever – over 900 in 2019. We will continue to support all of the individuals we serve in a very person-centered way, to identify what THEY want to achieve in their work and their life outside of work. What we’ve learned over the last many years is that people can grow beyond what they – and we – ever believed possible in the past.

New Look, New Logo!

We hope you have noticed the new “look” of our newsletter, which sports ODC’s new logo and graphics! We will be implementing the new logo on all materials and signage over the next few months. As we transform as an orga-nization, we need a “fresh” image, one that signifies the growth and “movement” that ODC opportunities bring to those we serve. The logo, which can be used with the graphic symbols in a number of different ways, represents the fact that not everyone’s journey toward their highest level of independence is the same. Our mission – to empower people with disabilities to achieve their work and life goals – is accomplished by “Connecting People and Commu-nities”, the new tagline that describes our fundamental goal.

YOUTH Youth Volleyball (Grades 3 – 6) Mondays & Thursdays, March 9 – 26 / 6:30 – 8 p.m. This co-ed volleyball class will introduce participants to volleyball basics and beyond. Students will enhance their skills in serving, passing, setting and techniques. Ninja Warrior Camp (Ages 4 - 8) March 30 – April 2 / 4:15 – 5 p.m. OR 5:15 – 6 p.m. Youth can tap into their inner Ninja Warrior in this fun, four-day camp. Strength, speed and balance will be tested throughout the various obstacle courses. Babysitter’s Training Course (Ages 11+) April 4 / 9a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Learn key components for babysitting in this Red Cross Certification Course, includ-ing feeding, diapering, handling discipline issues, identifying safety hazards, as well as caring for common injuries and emergencies, such as choking, cuts, and burns.

Rita Blenker is owner of Century 21 Gold Key Realty Inc. and has been in real estate for 38 years specializing in commercial. Rita is extremely active and involved in the community serving on the MAPS Board of Directors, Central Wisconsin Board of Realtors as Director and past President and the Marshfield Area United Way. Rita has three children and 8 grand-children and loves her time at the lake home with family.

Marty Chy is the store director at Marshfield's Festival Foods. Marty is involved in Marsh-field Noon Rotary, and serves on the board of the Marshfield Area United Way. He and his wife, Sara have two children and in his spare time he enjoys hiking and watching wildlife. Marty is an avid birdwatcher and wildlife tracker with the help of their two giant dogs, Moose and Bear.
