2017 Reality Stores Are Set. Volunteers Needed. The 2017 Reality Stores have been scheduled for March 14 at Spencer Schools and April 11 at Marshfield Middle School. Students from Auburndale, Colum-bus Catholic, Granton, Greenwood, Immanuel Lutheran, Loyal, Marshfield, Pittsville, Spencer, Trinity Lutheran and St. Joseph Catholic schools will par-ticipate in the stores. This successful event, originally a Leadership Marshfield project, helps eighth grade students put the puzzle of their future together.
Before the day of the store, students will be assigned an occupation with annual income, benefits, a marital status, combined income, and children. The first lesson students learn will be how to calculate their net monthly income. They deduct state and federal taxes, social security and Medicare, and quickly realize the difference between gross and net income.
As they enter the store, the young shoppers will be greeted by business volunteers repesenting a variety of monthly expenses. Students arrange for their housing, furnishings, utilities, transportation, childcare, groceries, insurance, and taxes, and will be required to donate to charity, contribute to their savings account and retirement.
They are allowed to make optional purchases such as computers, investments, motorcycles, pets, and family vacations assuming, of course, their budget allows for such expenditures. In addition, students are given "chance factors," the unexpected occurrences that affect a family's budget, such as emergency room visits, automobile prob-lems, or spontaneous purchases.
Life lessons that occur daily as adults are simulated in the store. During past years' stores, several students modi-fied their homes, purchase or rental, realized they couldn't purchase the vehicles they wanted, or gave up other luxuries to make their money balance. Some pursued a part-time job to make ends meet, or discovered a need for social services assistance. Many students are amazed at the added expenses of having children!
Most students leave the reality store with an increased awareness of budgeting money and making wise financial choices. Others have admitted they will give more consideration to their career and education choices. Overall, the reality store exposes students to the concept of preparing a monthly budget, and provides them a glimpse of how much things cost and how quickly costs add up.
The Reality Stores are "staffed" by area business representatives who "sell" their services to these eighth grade students. For example, real estate agents sell houses, car dealers sell vehicles, and insurance agents offer home and automobile coverage. While in the store, students have to arrange for daycare services, pay municipal taxes and or-der telephone and electric service as they prepare a monthly budget. Your help is needed as we plan for this year's stores.

YPWeek Wisconsin Further Expands to Include 25 Communities
Marsheld Young Professionals and NEWaukee are proud to announce the expansion of YPWeek Wisconsin to include 25 communities in 2017; Ashland, Door County, Eau Claire, Fond du Lac, Fox Cities, Green Bay, Hayward, Kenosha, La Crosse, Oshkosh, Madison, Manitowoc, Marinette, Marsheld, Milwaukee, Phillips, Portage, Platte-ville, Racine, Sheboygan, Stevens Point, Superior, Waukesha County, Wausau, Wisconsin Rapids. The grassroots statewide program will run April 22 to 29, 2017 with each community presenting a variety of programs that empower young professionals to take ownership and pride in their home towns.
YPWeek Wisconsin is modeled after a program started by NEWaukee in 2012 to provide a weeklong series of events focusing on discovery, adventure and meaningful conversations about the issues that matter to young professionals in the Milwaukee area. YPWeek Wisconsin has continued to reach across the state with the support of the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation (WEDC) since 2015, and its participants have collaborated with the agency on a communication strategy designed to retain, excite and grow the state’s talent pool. YPWeek will incorporate that strategy into its programming, leveraging “THINK-MAKE-HAPPEN,” the initiative’s guiding brand statement, as an organizing theme.
After two years of successful expansion of YPWeek Wisconsin, NEWaukee has built the nation’s largest millennial talent network. YPWeek Wisconsin currently showcases 25 communities, but the intention is to include all 72 Wisconsin counties. As the 72 Initiative grows, NEWaukee provides the following to emerging leaders across the state:
“YPWeek taps and channels the passion Wisconsin’s young professionals bring to the workplace to help build and sustain Wisconsin’s strong workforce and high quality of life,” explains Angela Damiani CEO and Co-Founder of NEWaukee. “Through YPWeek we have created the nation’s most comprehensive and collaborative talent engagement strategy.”
Marsheld Young Professionals (MYP) is a workforce development initiative of the Marsheld Area Chamber of Commerce & Industry (MACCI) that encourages young business people to interact socially, exchange ideas, share common interests, learn more about the area’s business community, and engage in the community’s future. The mission of MYP is to engage and employer young professionals through community, professional, and social opportunities; creating and promoting an environment to attract and retain professionals.

2017 Bubbler Awards Best Places to Work for Young Professionals in Wisconsin
YPWeek recognizes the Wisconsin companies that make it a priority to retain and engage their young talent through a dynamic workplace.
The Bubbler Awards shines a light on the companies who have made great strides to accommodate the interests of a shifting workforce. There's a common perception that Millennials are discontent or disinterested in traditional forms of employment. We are eager to showcase the reality of how many Wisconsin-based companies are adjusting and creating environments that allow young professionals to call this state home.
The Bubbler Awards is an example of how YPWeek Wisconsin highlights the young professional voice. Additionally, the nomination and selection process establish a framework for existing and emerging young professionals throughout the state to collaborate and brand Wisconsin as a workplace destination for Millennials.
The nomination evaluation centers on what Millennials are looking for in today’s workplace including: competitive salary and benefits, opportunity for advancement, work-life balance, and employee and community engagement.
For more information on the Bubbler Awards, visit ypweek.com!

Business Professionalism
A program designed to give you the tools to build business relationships.
Today’s businesses have expressed concern over their team members’ lack of basic, acceptable business etiquette. Emailing and texting has become the “norm” and many no longer use verbal communication. Oftentimes people are promoted into management or other positions where they must now represent the organization and interact in social situations.
The important message is that good business etiquette is about making other people feel confident in a business or social setting when representing your organization.
Attendees at this is program will be able to:
- Understand components of business etiquette - Learn how to initiate business communication - Learn guidelines for interacting comfortably in business and social situations - Develop more confidence & poise in your business communication
MACCI is pleased to partner with Judy Meyer, President of Meyer & Associates LLC, a Dale Carnegie Franchise of 15 counties in Central, Northern and Western WI. As a small business owner she understands and appreciates the challenges associated with today’s business environment. Judy believes that today’s workforce needs to constantly be sharpening their skills and businesses need to invest in their employees to retain them.

Answer: Typically, a tax-free mutual fund is made up of municipal bonds and other government securi-ties. Such securities are attractive to many investors because returns are tax free, often at both the state and federal levels. However, they also tend to provide lower pretax returns than com-parable securities issued by nongovernmental entities. It is imperative that you consider total after-tax returns when you are comparing a tax-free fund with a taxable fund. Whether or not a taxable fund is a better choice for you will depend in large part on how much of your returns are likely to go directly to federal, state, and local taxes at the end of the year and whether you are subject to the alternative minimum tax.
To determine your approximate after-tax rate of return on a taxable investment, multiply your rate of return by 100 percent minus your tax rate: Pretax return x (100% - tax rate) = After-tax rate of return For example, say you are in the 25 percent tax bracket and earn a pretax return of 10 percent on an investment. Your after-tax rate of return would be 7.5 percent, calculated as follows: 10% x (1 -.25) =.075 or 7.5% after-tax rate of return In addition, consider whether the fund will be held in a qualified pension or retirement plan. If your returns will automatically accu-mulate tax deferred in an IRA or 401(k), there may be no reason to accept lower returns in ex-change for a tax-free feature. If you are risk averse, you may decide on a tax-free fund. The securities that it holds will be backed by the full faith and credit of the issuing bodies, typically state governments or municipalities. This feature coupled with the tax advantage gives some investors an added comfort level.
Note: Before investing in a mutual fund, carefully consider its investment objectives, risks, fees, and expenses, which can be found in the prospectus available from the fund. Read it carefully before investing. Tax-free bond funds are subject to the same inflation, interest-rate, and credit risks associated with their underlying bonds. As interest rates rise, bond prices typically fall, which can adversely affect a bond fund's performance.
