Helicopter Flight Data Monitoring

HFDM is the systematic, pro-active and 'just' use of digital flight data from routine helicopter flights to improve operational safety.

Helinalysis' HFDM Programs assist helicopter operators to 'identify, quantify, assess and address' operational risks before they have the opportunity to manifest themselves in incidents or worse. In this way HFDM, as an integrated part of your company's safety management system (SMS), enables your SMS to mature into a predictive safety tool providing you with the highest levels of safety assurance.

Periodic HFDM Reports

In addition Helinalysis will provide comprehensive monthly statistical trend reports outlining the ‘top events’ of the month. Each of these will be explained in detail with individual explanations of the most significant events in each case. The reports will include statistical charts which can be used in management briefings.

Whilst your aircraft are in flight sensors on board produce continuous streams of data points, which are captured onto recording media.

On smaller aircraft data can be generated by stand-alone devices.

Flight Recorders, or Quick Access Recorders capture the data.

The Helinalysis' HFDM Data Manager easily transfers data from memory card to Server and prepares the cards for next use.

Data arriving at the Helinalysis Server is automatically prepared for the analyst. The data is subjected to literally hundreds of event algorithms designed to the specifications of each customer.

When parameter values exceed your own customised set of thresholds, events are generated. These events are subjected to detailed scrutiny and the more severe of them are reported to you within 24hrs, the remainder are logged for analysis and monthly trend reporting.

Mike Pilgrim is the founder and MD of Helinalysis Ltd, which specialises in analysis and reporting of helicopter FDM data. Helinalysis Ltd operates HFDM services for clients operating a variety of small, medium and heavy helicopter types from the USA and Canada, through Europe and the Far East to Australia and New Zealand.

Mike is a commercial helicopter pilot with 25+ years’ experience from light single pistons to heavy twin turbines. He is a flight safety professional specialising in Helicopter FDM having built and managed the HFDM program for a major offshore operator, growing it in 10 years to one monitoring over 170 helicopters flying on average a combined 20,000 hours per month.

Mike completed the very first ‘FDM for Airlines’ course at Cranfield University in 2005 and regularly returns as a visiting lecturer on the subject of Helicopter FDM.

In March 2009 he founded the Global HFDM Community bringing together over 160 people from 100 different helicopter companies around the globe, with the specific aim of promoting HFDM across the global helicopter industry.

From the international response to this effort he went on to launch and chair the Global HFDM Steering Group, whose website is at www.hfdm.org The Steering Group produced the Global HFDM Best Practices document which has been referenced in both the UK CAA FDM Manual (CAP739) and the Oil & Gas Producers (OGP) guidelines for FDM.

Since 2010, at the special request of the International Helicopter Safety Team (IHST), he has been a regular presenter on HFDM to the Helicopter Association International (HAI) annual industry conferences in USA, and he is also a regular speaker at the CHC Safety & Quality Summit in Vancouver and the European Helicopter Safety Team (EHEST) safety conferences at Helitech.
