AQUATICSSPORTS

A sport club is a registered Student Organization centered

around competitive or recreational participation in a par-

ticular sport activity. Many Sport Clubs are formed with the

main goal of competition, and others are more recreation-

ally focused. In all clubs, participants can learn new skills,

improve existing skills, potentially engage in competition, and

enjoy recreational and social fellowship. Competitive sport clubs

travel and compete against other colleges’ Sport Club teams.

Because the clubs are diverse, each one have different require-

ments to join. Visit recserv.uiowa.edu/sport-clubs for a current

list of clubs and contact the club leader to learn more.

Both Sports Clubs and Intramurals are a great way for students to stay active, keep playing a sport they played in high

school, try a new sport or activity, and meet new people when they come to the University of Iowa. Which one is

right for you? Essentially, Sport Clubs are for students who want to practice, play, and/or compete in a particular sport

long term. If the Sport Club is competitive, they will play against other colleges’ Sport Clubs. Intramurals offers short

term competition among University of Iowa students, faculty, and staff.

LEARNING, CONNECTING, REFLECTING

Employment during college helps contribute to student

success when meaningful connections between learning

in the classroom and learning on the job are made evi-

dent. IOWA GROW® uses brief, structured conversations

between student employees and their supervisors to help

students connect the skills and knowledge they are gaining

in the classroom with the work they are doing, and vice

versa. IOWA GROW® is focused on making student em-

ployment a “high-impact activity” - one that requires stu-

dents to refl ect on their learning and connect their learning

within and beyond the classroom.

Between our facilities and programs, we need a lot of peo-

ple to ensure great service, clean facilities, and successful

programs. We rely on our 450 student employees to make

that happen! Student positions include lifeguards, swim

instructors, membership service attendants, facility super-

visors, intramural offi cials, marketing assistant, graphic

designers, group exercise instructors, personal trainers,

tennis instructors, climbing wall attendants, and more.

Our goal is to provide valuable career experience for

students while fostering student development and im-

proving leadership skills. We use Iowa Grow to help stu-

dents learn, connect, and refl ect.

The Macbride Raptor Project is jointly sponsored by the

University of Iowa and Kirkwood Community College. The

project is dedicated to preserving and protecting Iowa’s

birds of prey through: rehabilitation of injured raptors,

educational programs both on-site at the Macbride Nature

Recreation Area and throughout Iowa, and raptor research

and reintroduction efforts.

Each year the Macbride Raptor Project receives approxi-

mately 150 to 200 patients. Most of these birds have been

injured by cars or have been illegally shot or trapped. Initial

treatment of the injured bird occurs at Kirkwood’s Raptor

Clinic with the help of veterinarians and trained staff, as

well as students. Continued treatment is provided by KCC

Veterinary Technology students, MRP staff, and trained

volunteers. The birds that have a chance for recovery

are transferred to the flight cage at the Macbride Nature

and Recreation Area where they receive physical therapy

directed by MRP staff and conducted by trained volunteers.

Several species of permanently disabled hawks, eagles,

and owls are displayed at the MNRA and visitors are wel-

come. The Macbride Raptor Project collaborates with the

U.S. Army Corp of Engineers and the Iowa City Bird Club

for programs and activities such as a Hawk Watch in Sep-

tember, Bald Eagle Days in February, and the Iowa City

Turkey Vulture Festival in June. Visiting the MRP should

be on your checklist of things to do in the Iowa City area!

School of the Wild is a unique and important partnership

with local elementary schools that encourages children

to develop respect for wildlife and a sense of gratitude

for the natural ecosystems in our area. Every year, over

1,200 children from area schools spend a week in the

fall or spring at School of the Wild, receiving a hands-on

education about our environment with small group sizes

and experienced naturalists and teachers.

In 2000, School of the Wild became the first North Central

Association (now AdvancED) accredited special purpose

school in Iowa.

SCHOOL OF THE WILD

Wildlife Camps began in the summer of 1991 with a

mission to inspire campers to action through developing

an awareness and appreciation for the outdoors. We

carry out this mission through hands-on activities because

the staff realizes their first-hand experience played an

important role in their passion for wildlife.

We offer over 60 camps in the summer for ages 4-17. We

also offer camp during spring and winter break. The majority

of camps are at the Macbride Nature and Recreation Area.

Depending on the camp, other locations may include other

local natural areas and Recreational Services facilities on

campus. Visit recserv.uiowa.edu/WildlifeCamps for more

information and our current camp offerings.
