February is the month of love, and we are very happy to say that our new look magazine has been received in the same spirit. For our Valentines issue we have introduced a brand new shopper’s guide with ideas on how to spoil your significant other on Valentine’s Day. If you are feeling a little bit in the dark on how to celebrate this special day we have selected some romantic dinner spots in the area (see page 28), or if you are a homebody, why not try an indoor picnic for two (see page 24) .

Mountain Biking has become a very popular sport in South Africa, and there are some amazing trails to try out in the Hazeldean area if you are an enthusiast. X-dirt recently completed a brand new mountain bike trail, and kid’s bike track in Hazeldean, adjacent to the hugely popular Cowhouse Gourmet Food Market. Read the full article on page 10.

Mark Twain said: "Get a bicycle. You will certainly not regret it, if you live." Living in the greater Hazeldean node offers many inherent advantages – one of them being the new Mountain Bike Haven. If you are looking for a new hobby, are an avid rider or looking to fulfil some of your new years’ health resolutions, take Mark Twain’s statement to heart and saddle up.

LIFESTYLE ELEMENTS

Hazeldean Node

Based on the southern part of the old farm, the mountain bike trail is open to the public with permanently marked routes

varying from 5km to 23km in distance. The technical difficulty varies and is suitable for

every experience level from nervous first timers to mud stained competitive riders. Some of the more technical aspects of the routes include a rock garden, super-tube, drop-offs and climbs making for a gritty and exhilarating Saturday morning.

The addition of the mountain bike track to the node will complement its growing lifestyle component and adds to the brand value of Hazeldean. According to a recent article on Bizcommunity entitled, Estate living is becoming a way of life,

Page 13: Hazeldean Times Issue 20 2016

hazeldean exclusives

the relationship between demand and investment potential is directly linked to brand value. In this article, Zeenat Moosa asserts that brand value is based on the concept that the owner of a well-known brand name can generate more, as consumers believe it has a higher value than less well-known products. Brand value in the residential estate sector is crucial as the battle for market presence intensifies. A mark of distinction, a strong and successful brand value based on world class amenities is what permits residents and management to enjoy the benefits of superior property values. It's why the likes of Eagle Canyon, Pearl Valley and the newly launched Steyn City Resort can sell properties valued at up to R25 million in some cases.

Hazeldean is in the process of building this differentiating brand value with a plethora of high-end restaurants, the new Cowhouse weekend market, Virgin Active gym, and lifestyle amenities such as running and mountain bike trails – with more lifestyle additions to come as the development progresses.

The long-term plan for the mountain bike trail is to extend the track to a distance of 60km while introducing more technical features such as a water bridge and a pit at the old water quarry. There is a tuck-shop and coffee shop facility planned for the riders together with a

kid’s bike track which would create the opportunity for parents to relax with a coffee while watching their young aspiring dirt-trackers go at it.

With the inclusion of the mountain bike track, the message behind the Hazeldean Node brand is being reinforced. The perception of the node as providing a healthy, well-rounded lifestyle for young and old is growing and accumulating value for residents and investors alike. So saddle up and we’ll see you on the track.

Some of the upcoming planned

events and races at the track include the Valentines’ Mountain

Bike and Trail event on 13 February and a night trail run and

mountain bike race on 17 March.

Visit www.xdirt.co.za for more information. Races and special

events aside, a normal ride is priced at R35 per day but 3, 6 and 12 month packages are available for more serious riders.

HAZELDEAN

OFFICE PARK

Full Circle Living. This is the ethos of the Hazeldean Node, a 950 hectare nodal development currently underway in the east

of Pretoria. A crucial component of this node is Hazeldean Office Park, an Abland development that is steadily progressing with the construction of Buildings D and E to complement the already completed buildings of A (Heron View), B (Avocet Corner), C (Hazeldean Intercare), Hazeldean Medical and The Structura Building.

Set for occupation from 1 May 2016 these two buildings are spaciously designed and modern, and are nestled around a unique wetland ecosystem, ensuring that this office park fully lives up to the Abland standard of top grade office space that compliments the environment. There is abundant birdlife in the area and, in an effort to encourage eco-friendly and responsible development ethics, the developer will incorporate this as a unique feature of the office park. A three hectare wetland area facing onto Silverlakes Road has been earmarked to remain undeveloped.

Office suites are available from 150m² to 1500m², with Building D offering 1500m² and Building E offering 500m² of Sectional Title Office Space for Sale. There are

also three fully serviced and transferrable stands available for development as an investment opportunity within Hazeldean Office Park.

A key point of infrastructure linked to the development of the greater Hazeldean Node is the planned road upgrade that has been approved for the N4. This will link Hazeldean office park and the surrounding developments directly with the future PWV17 highway and the N4. This road upgrade, coupled with several other planned infrastructure improvements that will service the entire Hazeldean node are set to commence in the third quarter of 2016 pending funding and final environmental approvals.

With the office park located close to major transport routes, access to schools, businesses, Hazeldean Square, Intercare facilities and Virgin Active Gym is easy and effortless. In addition to this ease of access, the security offered by Hazeldean Office Park is of the highest standard, completing the trifecta for Hazeldean Office Park of location and accessibility, safety, and environmental appeal.

With the first three buildings already set for occupation it is sure to be a scramble to secure space in Buildings D and E as well as development opportunities on the mere three sites left remaining.

JIREH CLINICDR STERNA FRANZSEN & KAREL DE HAAS

At Jireh Clinic, they believe in a holistic approach to health and longevity. This mean that, for instance, there is no sense in detoxifying the body, liver or the colon, while your mental state is in shambles. Negative emotions and thoughts cause the release of stress related chemicals that flow throughout the body, affecting and infecting each cell which can lead to the development of diseases if not properly dealt with. Jireh Clinic’s approach includes addressing muscle strength and suppleness, nutrition and balancing of the hormonal system as well as determining risk factors, toxicity and effectiveness of your detoxification system. They also make use of stem cells for rejuvenation or restoration of functional processes. For more information, visit www.jirehclinic.com or call 012 125 0125/073 456 7921 to make an appointment.

NEW AGE FORM IN MOTION

The latest motion furniture is no longer the frumpy and faded designs we think of from the past. Amazing advances in technology and a plethora of customisable features have brought motion furniture straight into the new age. Traditionally, motion furniture has been rather bulky and oversized, taking up a lot of space, but this is no longer the case with La-Z-Boy’s introduction of modular sofas that can be configured and used in a multitude of ways. All La-Z-Boy recliners offer a whopping 18 reclining and 3 footrest positions that help ease back, neck, leg and feet pain. Their single-seat recliners are available in slimmer silhouettes to suit more compact spaces and homes with clean modern lines. They have gone a step further, offering various customisable features, such as cubbyhole-like storage compartments for keeping controls neatly hidden away. The La-Z-Boy range is available throughout South Africa at specially appointed La-Z-Boy furniture retailers. Visit www.la-z-boy.co.za to find a retailer closest to you.

INDOOR PICNIC FOR TWO

Romantic Valentine’s Day picnics are an extraordinary way to show how much thought you put into celebrating your relationship with your special someone. Picnics are less expensive than dining out, allow more room for spontaneity and creativity, and bring out the fun side of romance.

Page 27: Hazeldean Times Issue 20 2016

This year, with temperatures soaring, an indoor picnic could be the perfect way of celebrating the most romantic day of year without

perspiring all over the cheese plate! Crank up the air conditioning and follow our easy tips for planning a perfect Valentine’s Day indoor picnic.

SET THE SCENEThrow down a big comfy blanket and

lots of pillows to turn your living room into a romantic indoor picnic (or if you want to get really creative, build a fort or romantic tent for two). You can light some candles, set out flowers or you could even string Christmas lights. Make sure the picnic location is clean and neat. One of the best things about having your picnic indoors is that you can set the tone with romantic music or a classic romance movie. If you choose to play a classic romantic movie we suggest An Affair to Remember or Casablanca but if you prefer music, choose a selection you both like that will play peacefully in the background.

SET THE DATEPicnics require a lot of planning and

preparation. Going to all the trouble to set up the picnic and then having to bag it because the date was not set ahead of time would lead to frustration, not romance.

PLAN YOUR MENU In keeping with the picnic theme,

consider finger foods, which are easier to eat sitting on the floor. Of course, finger food requires napkins, so have some linen napkins set out ahead of time. Plan a menu of items you can make ahead of time so you do not have to run in and out of the kitchen continuously. Keep the food light and simple. The evening is about you two enjoying each other, so do not complicate it with intricate food choices. That being said, you can’t go wrong by choosing foods loaded with aphrodisiacs – it is Valentine’s Day after all.

PLAN THE BEVERAGESDrink choices will depend on your

personal preferences. If you prefer not to drink alcohol, you might want to stick with water or freshly squeezed fruit juice. Champagne is of course the classic Valentine’s Day choice but make sure you remember to chill it beforehand and have

As a hardworking parent, you may find you have a presentation to prepare or an early meeting to attend at the office. What you are

going to give your child for lunch at school is a far away thought. Instead, you give them money to buy lunch at the school tuck shop. The general result is that they buy foods high in sugar and fat, which is of course, not quite what you had intended.

If you want your children to make healthier choices, it is essential to teach them about healthy eating habits at home. And I don’t mean sitting them down and explaining what that is through a quick pep talk. I mean teaching them by showing them. When you prepare meals and snacks, choose foods that are lower in saturated fats, less processed and that are more sustaining. Opt for mueslis, fresh

fruit, wholegrain sandwiches or fresh and colourful vegetables. If you are out at the shops or at a restaurant opt for the fresher, healthier options.

Involve your children in selecting and preparing foods. Make sure they are able to follow your lead. Some questions you should ask to guide your meal preparation include: What is in your fridge and snack cupboard? Are you drinking and snacking

By Brigitte Oswell

The tuck shop is an easily accessible place for children to spend their tuck money as they like, especially because parents are not there to guide them. The problem is that most tuck shops sell very few foods that can be considered healthy. So can you really blame your kids for buying the food they do?

TUCK SHOPHealthy i d e a s

Page 36: Hazeldean Times Issue 20 2016

on high sugar or high fat foods and liquids? Do you include fresh foods in their school lunch boxes? What do your children eat for lunch over the weekends? Do you opt for takeaways or restaurant meals more often than preparing your own meals?

I am not suggesting that you must never give your child sweets or chocolate. We can all enjoy those foods from time to time. However, your children need to know how to include these treats in their diet in moderation. Otherwise, when you are not around they will likely overdo it eating those forbidden temptations.

Generally, foods in the tuck shop offer very little nutritional value. Chips, fizzy drinks, chocolates and sweets are the types of snacks that are high in salt, unhealthy fats and sugars. A healthy tuck shop would be one that places an importance on foods that are nutritious and freshly prepared. It is also important that parents play an active role in making the school tuck shop healthy. If you do not know what is being sold to your children, you will have no idea whether the food they are eating has any nutritional benefits.

It is important that your child eats food

that sustains energy and blood sugar levels because as soon as they drop, your child will crave high fat and high sugar foods and lose concentration in the classroom. Unfortunately, most tuck shops sell foods that cause blood sugar to rise and the drop very quickly.

Instead of selling fizzy drinks that are full of sugar, tuck shops could sell bottled water and low fat flavoured milk or drinking yogurt. Sandwiches should be made with whole wheat or multigrain bread and rolls. Teach your children to avoid eating white bread, because it does not give them the prolonged energy they need to get through the afternoon. Sandwich fillings should include lean meat, skinless chicken or tuna topped with lettuce, tomatoes and cucumber. Fresh, colourful snacks will look more interesting to children, which means they will be more likely to buy them.

Tuck shops should have fresh fruit available and visible – not hidden at the back where children cannot see it – and this can even be chopped to make small bowls of fruit salad. Again, children are attracted to food that is brightly coloured. Dried fruit is another option, especially

since it stays fresher for longer. Nuts and biltong are good snacks to

sell, or even for parents to pop into their school bags. They are a good source of protein, which keep your children fuller for longer and help keep their energy levels balanced. Little tubs of yogurt are a great option. They are healthy and will satisfy your children’s sweet cravings.

It is a good idea for the tuck shop to offer fewer healthier choices than many unhealthy choices. This is especially true if they do not have a lot of resources. Instead of offering a variety of processed or packaged foods, tuck shops could prepare one or two dishes that are healthy, which requires less ingredients and, with less options for children to choose from, they will then be sure to sell what has been made.

Children will buy the food that is most easily available. It is up to the school tuck shops to make sure that the food is nutritious and healthy. It is also up to parents and caregivers to encourage the school tuck shops to be healthy.

The question is who is responsible for what food is available in the school tuck-shop? The school, you or both? Be actively involved and you can positively impact the health of your children.

Schools are in a unique position to promote healthy eating and help ensure appropriate food and nutrient intake among students. Schools should provide students with opportunities to consume an array of foods and beverages throughout the school day and enable students to learn about and practice healthy eating behaviors.

Get on Your Side

TIME

Start Saving Today for Your Child’s Future

At the start of every new year, we feel the impact of the rising cost of our children’s education on our household budgets. And with education inflation at 9% surpassing general inflation of 4.7% this year, the future is unlikely to get easier.

Page 39: Hazeldean Times Issue 20 2016

The long-term solution? If you haven’t already, start saving today for your children’s education. “We all want the best for our children

and this means getting them a good education to ensure that they become both financially independent and fulfilled in their careers,” says Jean Minnaar, Investment and Savings Manager at Old Mutual Emerging Markets.

“Whether you are new parents, a single parent or an established family, the key is to start saving early. Parents need to be aware of the future cost of quality high school and university education. Furthermore, the later you start saving, the more you will need to save per month as you will not have benefited from compounding interest,” explains Minnaar.

While a good education is one of the most valuable things a parent can give a child, Old Mutual’s 2015 Savings and Investment Monitor shows that 60% of urban South African parents are still not actively saving for their children’s education. The reality is that education is a pricey commodity and many people battle to pay fees from their monthly salaries.

To save enough, you need discipline, an appropriate plan and a suitable product. Minnaar recommends choosing investments that will yield returns higher than that of education inflation.

SUITABLE INVESTMENTS

Tax-free savings accounts let you access your funds at any time and you don’t pay tax on the growth of your investment. In fact, no dividend, capital gains or income tax is payable if you remain within the annual threshold amount of R30 000 and lifetime limit of R500 000. You can open a tax-free savings account for each of your children, so a family of four can save up to R120 000 annually. When contributing on behalf of your children, it is important to consider the implication of tax deductibility of donations. You can make a lump sum payment or monthly instalments, access your funds at any time, stop or restart your payments whenever you like, and leave money invested for as long as you like. If

you decide to go ahead with this option, you have a choice to access this offering with full financial advice or directly online.

Unit trusts are also a good option. Although exposure to market fluctuations means there’s some risk involved, the advantage is that you can access your money at any stage, increase and decrease your contributions, and add lump sums without incurring penalties. Although there’s no fixed term, investments should ideally be medium to long term to get the full benefit of compound interest.

If you prefer a structured savings plan with limited access, an education savings policy is an option. There is a minimum and maximum investment period. By law, you’re allowed one withdrawal within the first five years, and one annually thereafter. In the event of death or disability of a parent, many policies offer a benefit to pay the premiums on your behalf for the remaining period.

Advice matters when you are planning for your children’s future. An accredited financial adviser can help you choose the appropriate savings vehicle and give you advice on how much you should save to secure a good education for your children.

THE RISING COST OF EDUCATION

The tough reality is that in 2016, one year’s education could cost between R29 000 and R114 000, depending on the level (primary school, high school or university) and type (private or public) of education. A 2021 forecast will see you spending between R45 000 and R176 000 for one year’s education (see table below).

If your child is starting grade R this year, the combined cost of education is expected to be R1 057 000 for public schools and R2 406 000 for private. This includes primary school, high school and a three year university qualification.

For example, if your child is born in 2016, looking at the figures in the table and assuming 10% investment growth before fees, you need to save about R530 a month for university tuition (excluding accommodation, books and travelling costs). However, if your child is already 10 years old, this is about R1 050 (close to double)!

These monthly savings will also need to be increased by 9% per year going forward, to keep up with higher education inflation. “Start early, even if it’s only a small amount each month,” says Minnaar.

Onafhanklikheidswording

B y K I N D E R SDeur: Dr Magdaleen Carstens

Although situated only 20 minutes from Cape Town’s bustling city centre, Steenberg Farm feels a world away from city life. Steenberg Farm was the Cape’s first farm and is steeped in history. The farm was first used as a hotel in 1741, then named Swaaneweide, meaning ‘feeding swans’. The farm was exactly one day away from Table Bay and one day away from Simons Bay, so many travellers would stay overnight to break their journey. Christina Diemer (the widow of then owner, Frederik Russouw) found herself in a lucrative business, which she left to her son Nicolaas. It was Nicolaas who installed the ‘Holbol’ gable on the front of the main house, the only one of its kind in the Cape Peninsula today. Today the hotel has two restaurants to choose from: enjoy award-winning fine dining at Catharinas or bistro style food at Bistro Sixteen82, named for the year the farm was first registered.

Spoil yourself with a treatment at the spa; play a round on the 18-hole golf course designed to impress; or enjoy a glass of wine from the excellent winery, which produces some of the finest Sauvignon Blanc in South Africa.

Eat 5 to 6 small meals per day: You will increase your energy levels, accelerate muscle growth

and speed up your metabolism without storing fat.

Consume minimal amounts of Low GI carbohydrates: GI is a ranking of foods based

on how quickly they raise blood glucose levels. If the main sources of carbohydrates in your diet are bread and potatoes then rather try sweet potato and brown rice.

Drink 2 to 3 litres of water per day: Water is essential for the

functioning of our nervous, skeletal, circulatory, digestive and respiratory systems. Drinking water also aids in weight loss by speeding up your metabolism and curbing your appetite.

Only eat one cheat meal, once a week: It doesn’t help that you control

your calories during the week and completely overindulge over weekends. Stick to one cheat meal during the week. But don’t overdo it!

The biggest misconception people have is that they think they can out train a bad diet; meaning, “I can eat this bad food and work

it off later.” Nothing beats a bad diet. To achieve our weight loss goal we have to understand that nutrition makes up 70% of the process and training takes up the other 30%. Our bodies function in a similar way to a power station. If we want the lights to go on, we need to feed it some kind of fuel to kick-start the whole process. This is where food comes in, if we fuel our bodies with the right kind of food at the right intervals and in the right amounts, the lights shine brightly but change that to plates overloaded with sugars and calorie laden food we find ourselves operating on dim. Grasping this fact will help you make better choices when it comes to food.

Let’s change the word ‘diet’ to ‘healthy lifestyle’ because a diet is a temporary solution whereas choosing to live a healthy lifestyle is a long term solution which is far more sustainable with lasting results. The question that I get asked most of the time would probably be: “What exercises can I do to get a six pack?” As you are reading this statement you are most likely asking the same question.

People think the secret to a six pack is doing a lot of abdominal crunches day in and day out, but you couldn’t be more wrong. Yes, abs are like any other muscle

and to create definition you have to train them as well and give them rest to recover. We all have the infamous six pack but most of the time it is covered by a layer of fat, so you have to get rid of the fat layer first for the muscles to show. So how do we get those ripped abs? It starts in the kitchen. As the old saying goes, “You are what you eat”, and this means that making sure you have the right foods at hand or in the kitchen and eat at the correct intervals is crucial.

Do not skip breakfast: Having breakfast kick-starts your metabolism.

It’s the thing we all struggle with. We

want to lose weight but knowing what

to eat, when to eat or how much to eat, becomes a daunting

task, and for most a stumbling block

that curbs any effort towards our weight loss goal. Let’s see

if we can find a simpler approach towards effective

maintainable weight loss nutrition and

achieving that “bikini body” goal.

Include good fats in your diet: Not all fats are bad for you, nor will all fats cause weight gain. In fact,

there are good fats that your body requires to function and even to lose weight. Avocados, raw nuts, salmon, olive oil etc, are all examples of foods containing good fats to include in your diet.

Stock your kitchen with healthy food: If there are chocolates and chips

in your kitchen, they will be calling your name. If there is healthy convenient food to snack on, you have no choice but to go for a healthy option such as nuts, apples or berries.

Eat protein with every meal: Getting enough protein helps preserve muscle mass and

encourages fat burning while keeping you feeling full.

Swap a cup of rice for a cup of vegetables: You can save from 100 to 200

calories if you reduce the portion of starch on your plate and increase the amount of vegetables which also include beneficial minerals and vitamins.

Exercise: Exercise has so many health benefits. Doing regular exercise

will tone your muscles and help you get to your weight loss goals a lot faster.

Enter a race like 10km run/walk: Entering a 5km or 10km running

race or a race at the Hazeldean Mountain Bike Haven will help you to set a goal and work towards it. Your focus will change from weight loss to getting fit and healthy. And then miraculously the weight will also disappear.

Remember, you have this one body that was given to you to look after. You will not be getting another one, so why not make a decision today and realise how precious you are and look after yourself.

10KITCHEN APPLIANCE

Liam Gawne from leading kitchen appliance manufacturer, Miele, offers some insight into which trends will be taking over our kitchens in 2016.

Kitchen trends may come and go, but one thing remains constant: the kitchen is the heart of the home. Whether it is being

used to prepare gourmet meals, or as a gathering place for friends and family

– Liam Gawne from leading appliance manufacturer, Miele, explains that the three C’s will define the kitchen for 2016: colour, customisation and convenience.

“Appliances are first and foremost a practical element in kitchens that

make your life easier, but today, with the introduction of technology and high design, they are also becoming key design features in any kitchen worth its salt.” Here is his breakdown of the top 10 trends influencing kitchen appliances going forward:

Page 53: Hazeldean Times Issue 20 2016

INTEGRATIONPerhaps one of the mainstay trends in modern kitchen

design is the open-plan layout – where the kitchen merges with the living space. Liam says: “All family life revolves around food and, as such, the kitchen has become the most social area of the home. Open-plan layouts allow this room to become an integral part of the home’s living space – allowing the cook to socialise with others while preparing meals. Here, the kitchen, dining area and lounge all form one carefully designed open-plan space – maximising the floor space and the multi-purpose functionality of the kitchen area.”

He notes that as a result of the popularity of this kind of design, it is important that the appliances are not only functional but add to the aesthetics of the area as well. Miele has catered for this trend with its Generation 6000 range of high-end built-in kitchen appliances. Liam explains: “At Miele, we believe that design encompasses the outward appearance of an object, as well as the experience of using it. This is the principle on which all of our built-in kitchen appliances are based. It results in products that perfectly complement one another within each family in terms of form, function and materials. Our Generation 6000 range of appliances takes design consistency to a completely new level for a truly seamless and integrated end result.”

01

COLOURGone are the days of plain and dull kitchens – as kitchens

cement their role as a home's central gathering place, Liam notes that they're taking on increasingly more vibrant colours: "The kitchen is a key place for colour – it’s the place where people gather, so it's apt to have some mixing and matching of colours to create a high energy impact." Miele offers lovers of fine kitchens a range of four colour options – Obsidian Black, Havana Brown, Brilliant White and CleanSteel Stainless Steel. Miele has also introduced colour-coded cookerhoods to its range, explains Liam: "Customers can choose from an exceptionally wide range of colours from the RAL colour guide, to ensure that their cookerhood adds to the overall colour scheme of their home."

02

DESIGNIn terms of kitchen styles, transitional design that

sits somewhere between traditional and contemporary continues to gain popularity. “Although most modern kitchens are inspired with transitional elements, they tend to err more on the side of modernity as compared to traditional. Miele’s Generation 6000 range of appliances boasts the PureLine design, which harmonises perfectly with transitional styling with its puristic and linear design. The key features here are the use of a variety of materials and surface finishes that leave a harmonious overall impression,” says Liam.

TECHNOLOGYToday, increasingly more homeowners are looking

for appliances that test the limits of innovation – appliances that not only boast streamlined, design-conscious aesthetics and solid functionality, but also cutting-edge technology that goes the extra mile to help produce only the best end-results possible in the simplest and most time-efficient manner possible.

One such example is Miele’s MTouch technology, which allows you to operate your Miele Generation 6000 appliances in the same way that you operate your smartphone. A double cappuccino at the touch of a single button, finding the desired automatic programme on a steam cooker in an instant, or selecting the operating mode and temperature in just a few simple steps before baking – this can all be done extremely elegantly and more simply than ever before with Miele’s new MTouch controls.

According to Liam “MTouch stands for a high-resolution TFT (thin-film transistor) display and it is reminiscent of smart phones and tablet PCs. The menu is browsed by swiping or scrolling with the tip of a finger. Functions and menu options appear in brilliantly clear white letters on a black background. Colour elements are favoured for the display in the interests of improved clarity and a low-key approach – ‘OK’ to confirm a function is highlighted in green and the ‘Stop’ button is red.”

04 GOING GREENThe environmentally friendly kitchen begins with eating

green, but it certainly doesn’t end there. Energy and water-efficient appliances are not only good for the pocket, but they are also a good choice for the planet too. Liam elaborates: “It has been estimated that appliances can use up to 20% of your total electricity bill – so changing to energy-efficient appliances can save you a substantial amount over the long term.”

As such, energy efficient appliances are a must-have for any modern kitchen – however, Liam advises that you should look at both the energy rating of the appliance, and also consider its overall carbon footprint: “A truly green appliance is not just about its energy efficiency ratings – you also need to consider the sustainable practices of the manufacturer, as well as the overall carbon footprint of the appliance in question. For example, all of Miele’s appliances are designed, manufactured and tested to last for a minimum of 20 years, which not only means you get more bang for your buck, but it also seriously reduces its overall carbon footprint.”

05 WELLBEINGAs modern lifestyles create new health challenges,

maintaining or improving health and wellness has become a well-established priority in many people’s lives. Liam explains: “Being proactive in keeping yourself as healthy as possible not only has the benefit of ensuring that you look your best, but it also negates the need for costly medical treatment and time-out from the workplace. As a result, improving your basic nutrition has become a major objective for many.” As such, Liam explains that healthy cooking methods such as steaming, have grown in popularity: “Steam ovens represent a mega-trend in the kitchen, incorporating the principles of healthy, wholesome cooking like no other appliance.”

06

SIZEEven though on average, modern homes might be

getting smaller, there has been a resurgence in popularity for large-format appliances that do more. Liam explains: “Appliances are seen by most as a long-term investment and as such, more and more consumers are opting for larger appliances that offer a bigger capacity. This is largely due to the fact that large format appliances can do more, store more and clean more in the same amount of time. Take Miele’s DGC 6660 XXL combination steam oven for example – it offers an interior with a huge 68-litre capacity. This allows the use of up to four rack levels, considerably extending the range of applications when compared to other models on the market.”

07

Page 55: Hazeldean Times Issue 20 2016

COUNTERTOP APPLIANCESYou no longer have to settle

for mediocre appliances just because you don’t own your home – now you can invest in premium countertop appliances that you can take with you whenever you move. Liam adds: “Countertop models not only boast the large majority of innovations, technology and functionality of the built-in models, but they are also more affordable, and they are transportable. Countertop units, such as Miele’s countertop coffee machine, steam oven, and microwave are becoming increasingly popular options for those who rent, or alternatively, for homeowners who do not want to renovate their kitchen in order to benefit from new high-end built-in appliances.”

08

COFFEEBeing able to brew a delicious cup of coffee in the comfort

of your own home is a huge trend at the moment, says Liam. “Increasingly more homeowners are choosing to save on store-bought designer coffees in lieu of being able to make them at home instead. Today, coffee aficionados are not prepared to settle on inferior quality coffee at any time of the day – they want to enjoy the luxury of sipping a good quality brew while they are relaxing at home too.”

Miele’s Generation 6000 range of built-in coffeemakers for example, allows you to prepare two coffee specialties simultaneously, such as a cappuccino and latte macchiato for example. They also boast a range of other innovative and convenient features, including the CupSensor, which ensures the optimum distance between the spout and the cup or glass, the EasyClick milk system, which makes it even easier for connoisseurs to prepare coffee specialties with milk, and convenient automatic cleaning programmes.”

10

CONVENIENCEWhen it comes to kitchen appliances, functionality

continues to reign supreme. Liam explains further: “Regarding appliances, design should never be an end in itself – it should always occur in symbiosis with maximum functionality. In terms of Miele’s Generation 6000 range of kitchen appliances for example, this means a host of added features that ensure optimum performance and user-friendliness.”

Added functions such as ovens with pyrolytic cleaning for example, offer users an effortless way of removing grease splashes and residue in the cabinet by incinerating them to ash at very high temperatures. Miele’s Con@ctivity technology featured in its cookerhoods is another great example – it adjusts suction power automatically in relation to what is happening on the hob below, guaranteeing a pleasant room micro-climate.

FIND A FITTING FRIDGE

The fridge – that one appliance that never gets turned off – guzzles nearly 20% of the average home’s energy consumption. Old fridges are even worse; if yours is more than 15 years old there’s a good chance you’re paying an unnecessarily high bill. You can save hundreds of Rands each year simply by buying a newer, more energy efficient fridge. Most South African fridges now display an energy-efficiency rating; the scale is from A to F, with A being the best grade and F the worst. You could consider investing in a solar-powered fridge and/or freezer – these are particularly useful in areas with an unreliable electricity supply.

DECORATE IN GREEN

There are a number of environmentally friendly ways to decorate that are budget friendly and don’t compromise on style. When choosing your flooring, consider using bamboo over timber. Bamboo is the fastest growing plant on the planet with a high replenishment rate. You can also add a few houseplants around your home that will improve air quality – particularly in the bathrooms and bedrooms. In the bedroom you could also opt for a non-toxic mattress, choose wool over polyester for your bedding and invest in organic cotton sheets.

SUMMER BREEZES AND WINTER BLANKETS

One of the biggest things that you can do to use less electricity is to further limit your use of the heating and cooling systems in your home. In summer open some doors and windows to let the breeze blow through your house. In winter avoid using the heater and use lots of blankets instead…unless it gets too cold or hot – you shouldn’t have to sacrifice your own comfort, after all.

CLOSE OFF UNOCCUPIED ROOMS

In order to make your heater or air conditioner work less, you should close off any rooms that you aren’t using. This will reduce the airflow through your house and put less strain on your heating or cooling system, which once again will reduce your dependence on electricity.

GET UNPLUGGED

Any appliance or electronic device that you aren’t using should be unplugged. This reduces your dependence on traditional energy, which is very bad for the environment. Televisions are typically not in use for up to 17 hours a day so unplug yours to save electricity. You can also use multi-socket extension leads to save power. By turning them off when not in use, you could save up to 15% on your electricity bill!

KEEP THE LIGHTS OFF

No light switch should ever be in the on position during the day. Only use lights in the room that you are currently in and buy environmentally friendly compact fluorescent light bulbs that last longer and use less electricity.

Many conventional paints contain solvents, toxic metals and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that can lead to several health and environmental hazards, when both wet and dry. So when painting a part of your home (whether inside or outside), look for a zero- or low-VOC paint. An alternative option is to utilise local raw materials in your building to create a feature that won’t need to be painted – stone walls, for example.

BE SMART ABOUT PAINT

CULTIVATE A GREEN(ER) GARDEN

The easiest way to start cultivating an environmentally friendly garden is to switch to compost if you’ve been using synthetic fertilisers. Compost will give you healthier soil, without the chemicals. In fact, you can take it a big green step further by starting your own compost heap. Healthier, more organic soil actually leads to fewer weeds as well as fewer pest problems, meaning less reliance on harmful pesticides. You could also aim to plant as many indigenous plants as possible in your garden. Native plants require less water and are hardier, since they have adapted to the climate. You’ll also enjoy far more birdlife.

THE RIGHT ROOF

A quarter of the heat lost in any home is lost through the roof. The ideal roof not only insulates but is also energy efficient, mould-resistant, durable, and makes use of recycled materials. Concrete and slate roof tiles are good possible options. If you want to be really bold and innovative, you could consider making a green or vegetated roof, which puts nature right on top of your house. Green roofs retain storm water and reduce the heat island effect, but they do require a very sturdy roof structure. Another option to look at is steel roofing with a thermo-efficient paint system.

You’ll Increase Your Home’s Value:Whether you opt for energy-saving showers and toilets, or decide on larger installations such as solar water heating and electricity generating panels, creating an environmentally friendly home increases its worth in the long-run.

It Saves You Money:Choosing green alternatives, such as energy saving light bulbs, reduces the amount of electricity that you use. This together with other energy saving efforts such as insulating your geyser could lower your electricity bill by up to 15%.

Green Homes Are More Durable:Utilising materials, such as recycled wood is a great way to make your home more durable. These materials are formulated to withstand years of weathering and contribute to helping the environment.

You’ll Improve Air Quality in Your Home:By taking the necessary steps to make your home more green, you are improving the air and health of your family. By contributing to the decrease in greenhouse emissions and utilising natural cleaning products within your household, you’ll be able to breathe better inside and outside your home.

You’re Helping Secure a Sustainable Future:Small changes can make a big impact. You might not feel as if one eco-friendly home is enough to save the planet, but it can contribute to ensuring a safer environment for future generations.
