TYGER VALLEY COLLEGE FAMILY

LENDS A HELPING HAND!

The Miskin family of Tyger Valley College took to the streets of Wapadrand in a bid to collect as much water as possible to aid those aff ected by the drought. Christopher (gr3) and Michaela (gr6) even dressed up for the occasion!

The Miskin Familiy said: “Our children Michaela and Christopher recently shared with us the school's intention to collect 20 000 litres and so as a family we embarked on a drive to collect water. We must admit our belief in our fellow countrymen was reaffi rmed and we watched in disbelief how a community rallied in support. What originally started as a morning drive on Saturday soon turned into a full day event and then into a weekend event. People were dropping their water off at our gate wanting to make their contribution. It's truly humbling to watch all these bottles of water accumulate and to know the recipients know someone cares for them. We are proud to say we have exceeded the 20 litres expected and can now off er more than 1 800 litres and counting...”

Zinan Maimane a Grade 2 pupil at Tyger Valley College participated in the US World Championships Qualifi ers and qualifi ed to go play at the tournament in Pinehurst, North Carolina in the USA. This tournament will take place from 4 August.

Advice HOME LOAN FOR FIRST-TIME HOUSE BUYERS

112016 • HAZELDEAN TIMES • www.hazeldeannode.co.za

Purchasing a new house is one of the biggest financial investments you’ll ever make, and no doubt you’ll have many questions regarding the process. SA Home Loans provides tips to assist you through every step of this exciting venture! Article courtesy of SA Home Loans

ARE YOU READY TO PURCHASE YOUR FIRST HOME?

Before you set your sights on buying the home of your dreams, it is important to establish whether you are ready to make such a big, ongoing fi nancial commitment – in other words, is your income stable and suffi cient to support a fi rst-time bond?

If you are secure in your job and earn a regular monthly salary, you’ll have a fairly good idea of whether or not you can aff ord to buy a home. However, if you are self-employed, your income may be unpredictable, making it more diffi cult to know for certain whether you are in a position to purchase. According to SA Home Loans, an experienced bond consultant can help you to verify your fi nancial standing, and calculate how big a home loan you can aff ord and qualify for.

Also important to bear in mind are the costs and fees associated with purchasing your new home. You’ll need to have money saved to place a deposit on the home, and you’ll also have to consider moving costs, home-owners’ insurance and rates on your property. To ensure that you can aff ord the purchase, it’s essential to calculate all your monthly expenses and the other costs involved in buying your fi rst home. As a general rule, your bond repayments, together with taxes and property insurance, shouldn’t exceed 25% to 30% of your gross income. In fact, SA

Home Loans, as a responsible lender, will not approve a loan that exceeds 30% of your joint gross monthly income. It’s also a good idea to try to pay off other debt you may have (such as personal loans or credit card debt) before applying for a home buyer mortgage.

IMPORTANT FACTORS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING YOUR HOME

One of the most crucial factors you’ll need to consider when buying your fi rst home is the type of house you need. While your fi rst home may not be the mansion of your dreams, it is important to ensure that it meets all your current and medium-term needs. For example, a seaside bachelor fl at may be an idyllic pad for a newlywed couple, but will it be a practical place in which to raise a family?

When purchasing a property, it is vital to consider your individual housing needs, as well as those of your family – or future family! Is the home centrally located, or at least within manageable distance of work, grocery stores, doctors, schools and pharmacies? Most importantly, is the area relatively safe and secure? Although you may get “more home” for your money in

a less desirable part of your city or town, these may not be suitable areas for children to live and play in. The value may also not appreciate as it will in more sought-after areas.

Once you’ve decided which area you’d like to live in and have a rough idea of the type of home you want to buy, you’re ready to begin house-hunting. Although the process of fi nding a home is reputed to be a lengthy one, don’t be surprised if your ideal home takes only weeks to fi nd.

Once you discover the home that’s right for you, it’s a good idea to snap it up and resist the urge to “shop around” for a bargain. When you fi nd the property that’s priced right and perfect for you, buy it.

USEFUL TIPS FOR FIRST-TIME HOMEBUYERS

Take a digital camera with you when house-hunting. Having photographs in front of you will help you recall specifi c details of each home you see – which is particularly useful if you’re viewing up to six homes in a single day.

Write down key points about each home you see as you’re inspecting it. In particular, record its size, special features, design and other factors which may

14 2016 • HAZELDEAN TIMES • www.hazeldeannode.co.za

hazeldean exclusives

influence your decision.Take note of the area and its surrounds.

Is the house close to all amenities, or is it in a remote location? Would you be happy to live in that particular neighbourhood?

When you’ve narrowed down your options, ask to view the homes you like best a second time. This will help you to narrow down your options further.

Now that you’ve found your ideal home, all that remains is to close the deal – you’ll need a mortgage. In most cases the Seller’s estate agent will urge you to let them find a mortgage provider for you. Why – because they earn a handsome commission from the bank! But why not shop around then deal direct? Remember, this will be a long term relationship.

FIND OUT WHETHER YOU QUALIFY FOR A BOND – RIGHT NOW!

Want to know whether you could qualify for a bond? Once you’ve established that you could potentially be eligible for a bond, you could contact your nearest SA Home Loans branch to begin the bond application process. All you’ll need is your South African Identity Document and proof of your income. Once SA Home Loans has all the necessary documentation, they will be able to complete the approval process within 48 hours. Call 0860 246 810 or visit www.sahomeloans.co.za for more information.

passion of mine to support local up-and-coming artists of food, beverages and crafts, and so our monthly night market was born," says Gareth. With a curated collection of around 32 vendors, The Stall night market strives to offer the best of Gauteng's local favourites.

The live entertainment is specially sourced and specifically chosen to bring a fun and energetic atmosphere to each market. Artists who have performed at the market include Bad Peter, We Are Charlie and The Barbosa Experience. “The Stall night market is all about getting people together to experience a night out where the weeks' stress is forgotten. There is a 'one of a kind' element that shines through in The Stall night market that can't be explained, but simply experienced,” Gareth explains.

The Stall night market was launched at Hazeldean Square on Thursday, 11 February 2016, with a celebration not to be forgotten. It will now be taking place at Hazeldean Square on the second Thursday of every month from 17:00 to 21:00. When carrying this most precious of cargo, safety has to be your main concern. This is why, as of 1 May 2015, parents who don’t keep their toddlers under the age of three in a car seat will be slapped with a heavy fine. It’s important for parents to know what to look for when buying a car seat, how to properly install it and why this one little item is so important.

BUCKLE UP, Kids!

232016 • HAZELDEAN TIMES • www.hazeldeannode.co.za

hazeldean lifestyle

Car seats are designed with protection in mind. A car seat is the only way to travel with your baby in a car. Most hospitals

won’t let you leave unless you carry your baby out in his/her car seat.

There are two kinds of car seats available for infants: a rear-facing infant seat or a convertible seat. Your baby’s first car seat will be rear facing and for good reason. In an accident, the force will be absorbed by the back of the seat and distributed along the chair and your baby’s back, the strongest part of his body. The cushioning and harnesses will keep his heavy head and weak neck safe, protecting him from neck and spinal cord injuries.

A rear-facing infant seat fits babies snugly for a year or so, but you can’t use it as long as a convertible seat. A convertible seat can change from a rear-facing to a front-facing when your child is old enough. Although most babies fit in a convertible seat, research has shown that babies weighing less than 9kg are more protected in an infant seat. Infant seats are contoured for their little bodies and give support in all the right places.

One convenience of an infant seat is being able to take it in and out of the car

hazeldean lifestyle

and most fit onto a stroller. So if you have a sleeping baby, you can easily take the seat with you and attach it to the stroller without waking your baby up. A convertible seat usually needs to be installed and stays in the car, and is bigger and heavier than an infant seat. However, an infant seat usually lasts about a year, or until your baby is around 15kg, and it is recommended that your baby only starts using a front-facing seat when they are older than two so you may end up buying a convertible seat after all.

After your child has outgrown the front-facing seat, he may not be the correct height and weight for a seat belt to effectively protect him in an accident and you will need to use a booster seat. Without the added height and protection from a booster seat, the shoulder belt may be too close to his face and neck and the lap belt may rest against his stomach instead of his hips, which can cause serious organ damage in an accident. Booster seats come in two styles: high-back or backless. If your car’s back seat is lower than the middle of your child’s ear, use a high-back seat for more head and neck support. Children should use a booster seat until they weigh 35-45kg or are 140-150cm tall.

INSTALLING YOUR CAR SEAT

Four out of five car seats are installed wrong; don’t let yours be one of them. All car seats should be used in the back seat (in fact, the safest place in the car for children up to thirteen is the back seat) and should never be placed in the front seat, especially

if the car has an airbag. If the airbag deploys, it will hit the back of the seat – right where your baby’s head is. Car seats are not designed for the force of an airbag (which can inflate at up to 320km/h) and will cause serious injury to your baby, or even death.

The safest place for the car seat is the middle of the back seat, where your baby will be furthest away from any impact. If this is not possible, either side of the back seat is the safest option. If it is impossible for the baby to be at the back and the car seat has to be on the front seat, find out if it is possible to turn off the passenger side airbag for the duration of the trip.

One of the most common mistakes parents make when installing a car seat is not securing it tightly enough. Test the tightness every time you use the seat. The chair should not move more than 3cm on either side or backwards and forwards. If it moves too much, it could come loose in an accident and won’t protect your baby as it should.

Strapping your baby into the seat correctly is equally important. The five-point harness is the safest on the market today. It has straps going over both shoulders, straps around his waist and one between his legs and they all clip together in the middle. The shoulder straps should start below or in line with his shoulders. Most seats have cushioning on the straps to prevent chaffing against your baby’s neck. Check the tightness of the harness every time you use it as well. If you can pinch the straps together, it is too loose and needs to be tightened.

BUYING A CAR SEAT All car seats on the market today have to

meet standard safety requirements so it is difficult to make a bad decision when buying a car seat. The cheaper seats will only have the standard features but you can get some added luxuries, such as extra padding to keep your baby comfy, on more expensive models. Because technology and safety changes all the time, it is recommended that you buy a new car seat and not use a second hand one.

Accept a second hand seat with caution. If you have no other option, research the seat properly first. The age of the seat is most important, a car seat can usually only be used for six years. After this, the plastic becomes brittle. Find out if the seat has ever been involved in an accident. Even if it looks structurally sound, there could be internal damage that will compromise the safety of the seat. Avoid seats that are missing parts, are not labelled with the manufacture date and model number (you'll have no way to know about recalls), or do not come with an instruction manual. Also, check the seat for the manufacturers recommended "expiration date". If you have any doubts about a seat's history, or if it is cracked or shows signs of wear and tear, don't use it.

Your children are the most important things you will ever take with you in your car. An accident can happen in a second and ensuring your child’s safety by using the correct car seat for their age, and using it correctly, could end up saving their lives.

“Save lives: Clean your hands” is the motto the World Health Organization wants to send this World Hand Hygiene Day on Thursday 5 May. 80% of communicable diseases are spread by touch so washing your hands regularly throughout the day can give you the power to save lives.

Save Lives CLEAN HANDS

5 MAY IS WORLD HAND HYGIENE DAY

WHY SHOULD YOU WASH YOUR HANDS?

Despite the generally held belief that colds and flu are spread by sneezing and coughing, studies show that the majority of transmissions come from hand to hand contact and the transferring of germs. A busy, working adult can touch up to thirty

objects every minute, including their hair, face and body and there are up to 5 000 germs on your hands at any given moment. Good hand hygiene is the first core action in preventing the spread of infections and diseases. Pneumonia and diarrhea are the leading causes of child deaths, both of which can be prevented by hand washing.

HOW SHOULD YOU WASH YOUR HANDS?

How you wash your hands is just as important as washing them regularly. The majority of people wash their palms and nothing else. The bacteria count is highest on your dominant hand yet right handed people tend to wash their left hand more thoroughly and vice versa. It is recommended that you use clean running water and soap. Make sure to wash your whole hand, including the back of your hand, between your fingers and around your nails. The majority of germs on the hands are around the fingertips and nails so make sure to wash these areas properly. The recommended washing time is fifteen seconds but up to thirty seconds is ideal. For every fifteen seconds more you spend washing your hands, ten times more bacteria is removed.

Don’t forget to dry your hands properly as well. One in five people don’t dry their hands at all after washing. Damp hands spread up to a thousand times more germs and bacteria than dry hands because germs thrive in a moist environment. Disposable paper towels are the most sanitary way to dry your hands.

WHEN SHOULD YOU WASH YOUR HANDS?

You should wash your hands a few times throughout the day. The most important times to wash your hands are:• Before, during and after preparing food• Before eating food

hazeldean lifestyle

292016 • HAZELDEAN TIMES • www.hazeldeannode.co.za

hazeldean lifestyle

• Before and after caring for someone who is sick

• Before and after treating a cut or wound

• After using the toilet• After changing diapers or cleaning up a

child who has used the toilet• After blowing your nose, coughing or

sneezing• After touching an animal, animal feed

or animal waste• After handling pet food or pet treats• After touching garbage or changing

your dustbin bag• Before and after inserting or removing

contact lenses• Children should wash their hands after

playing outdoors• After working in the garden• After shopping and handling trolleys or

baskets

• After going to restaurants or bars• After smoking

CAN YOU USE HAND SANITIZERS?

Are hand sanitizers or waterless hand cleansers as effective as using soap and water? Yes and no. They work when they have a high enough alcohol content and when they are used properly, which most people don’t do. Hand cleansers don’t work when your hands are visibly dirty or greasy. Choose a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. You get up to 95% alcohol and the higher the percentage, the better it works.

To get the most out of your hand sanitizer, make sure you use enough – a dollop about the size of a 50c coin. Rub it all over your hands, not forgetting your fingertips and nails, for about 30 seconds. The friction

helps to loosen the germs and microbes on your skin and the alcohol will kill them.

Hand sanitizers can be a very effective tool. A study done in British hospitals has shown that health care workers only comply with regular hand washing 40% of the time but show 92% compliance when using alcohol based hand cleansers. It’s quick and easy and you can use it anywhere. Most bottles are small and convenient enough to keep around the house and in your handbag, leaving you with no excuse not to practice good hand hygiene.

World Hand Hygiene Day raises awareness of how easy proper hand hygiene is and is a reminder that infection prevention is easy and starts with the knowledge that clean hands and proper hand hygiene are important. Wash your hands today and you can save lives, maybe even your own.

10HEALTHY SNACKS

TO KEEP IN YOUR OFFICE DRAWER

We all like to snack, especially at work. When your mind is busy, your stomach inevitably starts

grumbling. While snacking can help you from overeating at your next meal and make sure

you get all your nutrients for the day, it is important to be mindful of how much you consume and not end up eating too many

calories over the course of the day. Here are our top ten healthy

snacks to keep close at hand.

The peanut butter (you can also use almond butter) is packed with protein and is full of monounsaturated fats which stabilize blood sugar ups and downs. The apple provides fi bre and carbohydrates for energy. This tasty snack will keep you going for a few hours, and it is under a hundred calories for an apple and a spoon of peanut butter.

01 02APPLES AND PEANUT BUTTER

If apples aren’t your thing, try a banana with the peanut

butter. Bananas contain all kinds of good things. They are high in Vitamin

C which is good for fi ghting infections, high in potassium which helps control heart

rate and blood pressure and lots of fi bre to keep you regular. Also, eating peanut butter in the

morning can curb cravings for the rest of the day.

BANANAS AND PEANUT BUTTER

Although chickpeas are commonly used in hummus and Middle Eastern cuisine, they become a crispy savoury snack when roasted. Prepare them the night before and take a serving to work in a tupperware. You can season chickpeas in a number of ways but skip the salt if you don’t want the added sodium. Chickpeas have a considerable amount of protein, very little fat and around 22% of your recommended daily fi bre intake.

05 ROASTED CHICKPEAS

The brain draws almost all its energy from glucose, the

most important simple sugar in our

metabolism. Snacking on low glycemic index

cereals like bran fl akes will release glucose into the blood

stream at a slow rate, keeping your energy up and your mind active.

This will minimize blood sugar dips and optimize brainpower and mental focus.

03DRY CEREAL

Almonds are a great source of protein and healthy fat and are also satisfying. Almonds contain nine essential nutrients, they have the highest rate of proteins and fi bre when compared to other nuts, they are rich in Vitamin E and they contain monounsaturated fats that help combat cholesterol.

OPULENT The radical reinvention of Singita Ebony Lodge completes the total renovation of Singita Sabi Sand – the private 45,000 acre game reserve where the Singita story began.

Safari Style

332016 • HAZELDEAN TIMES • www.hazeldeannode.co.za

hazeldean lifestyle

Singita recently unveiled a complete re-design of its original lodge, Singita Ebony, in South Africa. Singita Ebony is where the

Singita story began 22 years ago on land owned by Singita founder, Luke Bailes. The re-launch completes Singita’s reinvention of its private 45,000 acre game reserve that is set within the Sabi Sand. The result will be the most innovative collection of safari lodges in Southern Africa.

Situated over the Sabi Sand River, Singita Ebony Lodge is already considered one of Africa’s most iconic lodges and was revolutionary in its pioneering approach to the modern luxury safari experience. The new Ebony however, takes safari design and style to a new level altogether as

it is transformed by Cecile & Boyd – the leading South African designers behind Singita’s lodges in South Africa, Tanzania and Zimbabwe. Their unique vision created a fresh and contemporary interpretation of the classic safari lodge combining tented camp and bush lodge styles. Guests are literally immersed into nature with huge open spaces and interiors inspired by a combination of local tribal culture and the animal kingdom.

The new Singita Ebony Lodge comprises of 12 suites, each with its own private plunge pool. Dramatic changes include internal and external walls being almost completely removed from the existing lodge and replaced by canvas and glass to create new safari tent-style suites to maximise views and space. The entire front wall of each suite between the bedroom and the veranda was removed, allowing light to flood in. Outdoor pavilion decks ideal for dining and relaxing are

34 2016 • HAZELDEAN TIMES • www.hazeldeannode.co.za

suspended off the river banks as if hanging in the trees. The interiors feature curated, still-life collections

of aristocratic finery in antiques and artefacts as well as vintage campaign furniture from the Bailes family collection – made from wood, iron, steel and aged bonze that harks back to the 19th century. The interiors also feature oversized sepia photography, art and objects as well as glamorous leopard and zebra animal print upholstery fabric, complementing bold graphic tribal patterned murals. Replacing animal skins, Singita Ebony Lodge features printed animal patterns on textured fabric to help attune guests to their surroundings and ensure the message is about conservation rather than man conquering animals or subduing nature.

The name 'Ebony' refers to the beautiful, mature ebony trees that surround the site. The lodge incorporates big and bold sculptural elements with a strong new colour palette of black and white. The black is found in the rich, polished ebony wood, while the white is represented by the linens, cottons and natural fibres.

Ebony’s central sociable hub is the very heart of the lodge – a place to meet, relax, socialise and take in the view. The sitting room has been moved to the very front of the lodge, closer to nature, to create a contemplative space. The style is reflective of what Singita calls the ‘New Nomad’, the traveller that wants to get back to nature but stay connected. A beautiful marble and cast iron table is the furniture centrepiece for this concept – it is a traveller’s desk with smart tools, a private dining room table for entertaining or a bar to enjoy an evening gin & tonic in one.

Singita operates two other spectacular properties in the Sabi Sand including Singita Boulders Lodge which reopened after a major refurbishment in June 2014 and took inspiration for its new primal interiors from the four elements of earth, wind, air and fire. Singita Castleton also re-launched in late 2103 is a 12 person private villa combining the best elements of a private safari lodge with the rustic charms of a country farmhouse. Singita Castleton is available for exclusive use only and is ideal for families and groups of friends.

Singita’s evolution from a single-lodge company to one that is now responsible for a million acres of land, operating 12 lodges and camps in five wilderness regions across three African countries, has always been characterised by a pioneering spirit and a sincere desire to preserve wilderness areas for future generations. Its low-impact, high-value tourism model – fewer guests paying a premium for the privilege of experiencing vast open spaces – exists to sustain these wilderness areas and their resident wildlife, while providing an exclusive safari experience.

BATHROOMS FOR A GREENER FUTURE

There is no denying it – sustainability is still top of mind in the bathroom industry. So says Craig Taylor from Bathroom Butler. He goes on to add: “With the current water and electricity shortages we have been experiencing in South Africa, sustainability is no longer just a ‘nice to have’, but it has evolved into a lifestyle ethos that needs to be adopted by all.”

Craig notes that going green is a win-win situation for everybody: “The beauty of making sustainable choices in the

bathroom is homeowners will benefit from significant savings in their pocket and in the process they will be contributing towards a greener environment. It might cost a bit more from the onset, but making green choices will mean using less electricity and

water, meaning that the initial investment will pay for itself in the future.”

BEAUTIFUL DESIGN AND SUSTAINABILITY

He explains that the critical urgency of going green is not the only thing that has changed with regards to green practices recently: “The main differences between going green today and a few years ago is

372016 • HAZELDEAN TIMES • www.hazeldeannode.co.za

hazeldean lifestyle

that firstly, increased demand has made it much more affordable now, and ‘green’ installations have also become more beautiful additions to the home. Today, it is possible to achieve high levels of efficiency and sustainability without having to compromise on design. In fact, a major trend in bathroom design seems to point at sustainability and beautiful design going hand-in-hand.”

Take steel or enamelled baths and basins for example – not only do they offer an unparalleled designer aesthetic to the bathroom, but the refined enamel surface or glaze used by top brands such as Bette, is made from natural raw materials such as water, glass, quartz, ores and borax that are non-toxic and eco-friendly. Craig explains: “Bette craftsmen and works men do not wear any protective covering over

38 2016 • HAZELDEAN TIMES • www.hazeldeannode.co.za

hazeldean lifestyle

their faces during the enamelling process, they are confident in the 100% non-toxic nature of the materials being used.”

The commitment of companies such as Bette to sustainability is evident in their use of natural raw materials such as titanium steel and their refined enamel surface, Bette Glaze. The materials enhance the durability and the appearance of the products, but also make an important contribution towards sustainable architecture.

RESOURCE EFFICIENCY Being able to save water and energy

at home is an important aspect to consider when revamping or building the space from scratch. Heated towel rails contribute towards resource efficiency by encouraging homeowners to use major power consummators, such as washing machine and tumble dryers, less often. Says Craig: “Because heated towel rails have been specially designed to dry towels, and because they encourage a hygienic environment for towels and bath sheets, homeowners will not need to wash them as often thereby saving water and electricity.”

When purchasing a heated towel rail, you should try to find a model that has built-in controllers that allow users to adjust the temperature, and to switch the rail ‘on’ and ‘off’. Says Craig: “Not only can this reduce the energy consumption by as much as

392016 • HAZELDEAN TIMES • www.hazeldeannode.co.za

hazeldean lifestyle

75%, but the controllers also ensure that you can use your heated towel rail all year round, increasing the temperature in winter to add a touch of warmth and decreasing the temperature in summer for drying. This is especially useful in humid or cold climates, where towels don’t dry easily.”

LOOKING AT RECYCLABILITY

Recycling saves energy, reduces greenhouse emissions and conserves natural resources. Craig says: “Recycling is a very important part of sustainability as a whole. For example, at Bathroom Butler we make use of Smart Materials such as Grade 304 Stainless Steel to ensure our products are 100% recyclable. Meaning that they can be completely broken down into their various components and the

stainless steel can be melted down and turned into something else without having to add any virgin materials.”

Craig notes that since its inception, Bathroom Butler has been one step ahead of the market with its determined focus on offering only the best quality possible: “We developed our smart ideas philosophy out of constant efforts to ensure that our products live up to the possibility of being completely recyclable at the end of their useful life. First we chose the right materials for the job and not materials that make the job easier, then we designed the production process that allows the product to be easily recycled. This evolutionary process combines Smart Materials and Smart Design leading to Smart Manufacturing giving us products that stand out from the crowd.”

Ongelukkig meestal by die ouerhuis.

Elektronika is visueel hoogs gestimuleer. Kinders wat 'n oormaat blootgestelling hieraan het, verleer om te luister. Hulle maak op die visuele boodskap wat elektronika aan hul bied, staat. Visuele konsentrasie verg minder energie as ouditiewe konsentrasie. Dit gebeur dikwels dat hierdie kinders in 'n klasopset sukkel

om te konsentreer en opdragte korrek uit te voer, omdat hulle verleer het om te luister.

Wanneer ek as ouer verlang dat my kind vir my moet luister, moet ek by

myself begin. Ek moet vir

myself afvra:

Eff ektiewe kommunikasie begin by aktiewe luister. Kom ons luister weer na wat ons kinders wil sê sodat hulle weer na ons kan luister.

Crucial GOOD RETIREMENT ADVICE

TAX POLICY UNCERTAINTY MAKES

The much-discussed new retirement reforms implemented on 1 March (T-Day) are a prime example. Although the new framework is undergoing some revision following talks

with the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu), it will continue to hold several important benefits for South Africans. Combined with the tax-free savings account (TFSA) framework introduced by government last year, the new tax concessions provide a good opportunity to boost your retirement savings.

Derick Ferreira, senior product manager at Old Mutual, explains that the proposed legislation will enable South Africans to enjoy the same tax concessions across all retirement funds, namely retirement annuities, pension and provident funds. From T-Day, you are able to make tax-deductible retirement fund contributions of up to 27.5% of the greater of your remuneration and taxable income up to a total of R350 000 p.a. This means that more savings will qualify for a tax deduction. By contributing more, you can work towards a more secure retirement.

As matters stand now, one aspect of the tax changes – the proposed provident fund annuitisation – has been postponed until 1 March 2018. This may also mean that the proposed new tax concessions pertaining to provident funds will be reviewed at the end of the two year period to achieve fairness between all retirement funds.

If no further changes are made to the framework, then in two years’ time when it comes into effect, provident and provident preservation funds will be subject to the same annuitisation rules as pension and retirement annuity funds.

The new laws aim to reduce the widespread problem of old-age poverty and excessive dependency on the state and on relatives, which is a major problem in our country.

Ferreira expects the tax law changes to lead to an upsurge of interest in all savings vehicles this year, as investors and retirees look at savings options that offer them maximum income tax concessions or, in the case of TFSAs, tax-free growth and full access to their savings.

“TFSAs are an ideal vehicle for topping up your

48 2016 • HAZELDEAN TIMES • www.hazeldeannode.co.za

hazeldean lifestyle

discretionary retirement savings. You’re free to withdraw your money at any time, for whatever reason, with no restrictions or penalties.

“The benefi ts include the opportunity to save up to R30 000 a year and up to R500 000 over a lifetime, completely tax-free. This means you pay no tax on the growth of your savings, whether it’s in the form of dividends, capital gains or interest.”

TFSAs were introduced by the government primarily to encourage a culture of saving among SA consumers. Apart from promoting individual fi nancial well-being, national savings can play a signifi cant role in boosting economic growth and reducing dependence on direct foreign investment.

Ferreira emphasises that the funds in TFSAs should ideally be allowed time to mature and deliver returns to optimise the real benefi t of compounding growth. The TFSAs are particularly effi cient in building discretionary wealth, be it for a specifi c goal, education funds or even supplementing retirement capital, depending on your needs, goals and objectives.

Ferreira adds that TFSAs appear to have struck a chord with South Africans, who generally struggle to save and stay free of debt. Early industry reporting of take-up of these accounts has been very encouraging. At Old Mutual nearly a third of the company’s TFSA sales were online, indicating that a younger, more digital-savvy audience are making use of this

saving option. It’s signifi cant too that a large

percentage of the new TFSAs are recurring premium business. This, says Ferreira, illustrates a commitment to longer-term, ongoing fi nancial planning and savings, and is a positive sign that South Africans are improving their saving habits.

“If you’re uncertain about the implications of any of the tax changes, speak to your fi nancial adviser. Expert advice matters in times of change,” concludes Ferreira.
