The Gautrain might be coming to Hazeldean. The Gautrain MEC for roads and transport Ismael Vadi and Jack van der Merwe, CEO of the Gautrain Management Agency (GMA) recently announced plans for another potential 140km to be added to the Gauteng rapid rail system. These plans will be submitted for approval to the Gauteng provincial government and local authorities by the end of the year.

Feasibility studies will start early in 2015 during which the route speci cs will be determined. Vadi announced on 14 October 2014 the appointment of a consortium of transaction advisers who will be conducting the feasibility study for the proposed extensions.

The SMEC Consortium comprised SMEC South Africa, DLA Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr and Deloitte – consultants with pro ciencies in public–private partnership ( ) procurement processes; rail design and planning; socio-economic impact studies; and legal and nancial planning.

The plans are part of the 25 year Transport lan for Gauteng that was completed under Van der Merwe’s leadership early in 2014 and are closely linked to plans for improvement and extension of the assenger ail Agency of South Africa ( ASA) Metrorail System and us apid Transit Systems planned and being implemented by the Johannesburg and Tshwane metropolitan council.

hase 1 consists of km of dedicated median bus lanes, 52 stations, depots and 4 terminuses. Line 1 of A e eng, the Tshwane apid Transit System, was launched on 14 November and ticket sales commenced on 21 November.

The newly proposed Gautrain links include: Sandton-Honeydew (underground) uimsig to Samrand Samrand to the Eastern parts of retoria hodes eld to East and Mall and oksburg estgate to ark (underground) Naledi to uimsig Tshwane East to Mamelodi

Some of these routes might be developed concurrently. Van der Merwe said the construction work will go out on tender and it is quite possible that different contractors will build different sections of the extensions. The provision of rolling stock will also go out on tender, although it can be more dif cult to divert from the current provider,

The extended system will have one operator. He says participation in the expansion pro ect is open to any interested party, including Gautrain concessionaire

The Hazeldean Consortium is currently in discussion with the GMA to motivate a station at Hazeldean as part of the next phase roll-outs and the discussions thus far have been a positive. The planning of this future rail link is still premature and currently in its pre-feasibility stage.

Hazel’s Nature NookWith the high cost of travel, more people are opting to stay at home during the holiday season. In many cases, they are transforming their homes to entertain their local family and friends in the comfort and security of their own “personal resort”. This rising trend has been called Homecation and I cannot think of a better venue for a homecation than Hazeldean.

Whether you’re en oying the world-class facilities at The etreat, lazing next to the pool at Oukraal or sitting dead

still trying to get that perfect photo of an Egyptian Goose at The idge, more and more people are trying to escape from the holiday crowd at the coast and other holiday resorts.

Here are a few things you can look out for during the warm summer months in and around Hazeldean:

Migrating birds that escape from the freezing European winter seek refuge in the warm Southern African summer. Swallows are the best known and can be seen building nests under roofs and overhangs. In addition to the well-known arn Swallow, Southern Africa is blessed with having numerous other Hirundo species, the ma ority of which are Inter-Africa migrants.

inging schemes are now underway throughout Southern and South Central Africa as well as in enya Tanzania (Eastern Africa) and Swallows have also been ringed in Nigeria, so hopefully in time we may be able to get some feedback as to where the Inter-African migrants travel to. These birds breed in the Southern African region and migrate at around the same time as the arn Swallow although they arrive back earlier than the arn Swallow. This can be explained in the same manner as to why the

arn Swallow migrates north quicker than its southerly migration, and that is the most basic of instincts,the urge to breed.

Giving back during Eye Care Awareness MonthA very exciting ourney for our practice was its recent participation in the annual 'Eye Care Awareness' international campaign. This campaign attracts patients from disadvantaged communities, giving them the opportunity to have sponsored cataract surgery under circumstances they would not normally have access to.

According to the Ophthalmological Society of South Africa (“OSSA”), private eye specialists are requested to take part in this annual endeavour to perform cataract surgery on older and indigenous patients who do not have the funds for this type of surgery. This cannot happen without the support of a willing hospital, eye specialist and the nancial support of companies that supply consumables and intraocular lenses needed for the surgery.

We were fortunate enough to be able to help 1 patients with cataracts during this time. It would not have been possible without the support of this campaign. The patients were referred to us by the eye clinic in Mamelodi, east of retoria. The surgery took place on 13 and 14 October 2014 at the Intercare Hazeldean Day Hospital and the results were phenomenal

We are grateful for the support of the Intercare Hazeldean Day Hospital, for the rst-class facilities and for accommodating the patients with a consultation room which was made available for the follow up’s for 2 days after the surgery. The following companies also contributed towards this pro ect:

Alcon: Intraocular lenses, consumables and cataract packs.Genop: Intraocular lenses, consumables and cataract packs.Questmed: Consumables and theater stock.Allergan: Financial contribution.

I believe that we will be blessed every year to assist similar disadvantaged patients and that we will endeavour to make every year more successful than the last.

For many families, the holidays are known as the season for giving. ut for burglars, it’s the prime season for taking. Stealing from you not only your hard-earned money, possessions, and new gifts, but also all the oy and sense of goodness that the holidays are supposed to be all about.

Here are a few tips that will help you en oy the holidays without incident:

urglars look for an easy entry with good escape routes. Don’t openly display your christmas tree and gifts in the front window so it’s easily visible from the street. It’s too tempting for them to smash the window and grab the wrapped packages.

Check that your alarm system is working properly before you go on holiday.

Inform your neighbours of your holiday plans so that they can keep an eye on your property.

urglars look for occupancy cues like outdoor lights burning 24 hours a day, piled up newspapers, or advertising yers hanging on the door knob. Ask a neighbour to keep the front of your home clean of papers and debris. ou can give the appearance of being home by installing 2 or 3 light timers inside your home, and use timers to turn on a TV or radio while you’re gone.

urglars prefer to enter through unlocked doors or windows. Check doors and windows for weak spots. Government statistics show that 30% of burglaries happen through windows. Installing a few dead-bolts and new window hinges could increase the security of your home exponentially. Sliding windows that are not secure can be seen from a distance. One holiday problem can occur when exterior christmas light

Security tips over the festive seasonextension cords are run inside through a window and prevent it from being secured. Hire an electrician or handyman to install an inexpensive exterior outlet for your holiday lights.

Never leave tools in your garden or an unlocked garden shed that would help intruders break into your home.

After Christmas Day, don’t pile up empty gift boxes from your new computer, DVD player, or stereo receiver on the street for the garbage man. urglars appreciate knowing that you have expensive gifts inside for them to steal. reak them down or cut them up to conceal the items better. After a lucrative burglary, the chances of being burglarized again are increased.

Last, but not least, fortify your home by installing solid core doors, heavy duty locks, longer screws in the lock strike plates and door hinges, and install secondary security devices on all accessible windows.

Wanneer y ou kind voer speel die spelet ie: “Een happie pap vir ou, een happie pap vir mamma”;

Wanneer y met ou kind speel, speel: “Mamma gee vir ou ‘n blokkie en y gee vir mamma ‘n blokkie” (stuur kind se hand asof hy wel vir ou die blokkie wil gee);

‘n aba kan van vroeg af leer dat hy sy aandag moet deel, deur nie altyd dadelik in sy haar behoeftes te voorsien nie. Sê byvoorbeeld aan ou kind: “Mamma kan sien y wil hê ek moet ou optel, maar ek trek nou eers gou vir boetie aan”;

“Jy wil met die karret ie speel, maar y sien boetie speel nou met die karret ie”;

Help my kind weier om te deel

Wanneer ‘n ver aarsdaggeskenk gekoop word, maak ou kind deel van die proses. Vra vir ou kind: “Wat sal y graag vir boetie vir sy ver aarsdag wil gee?” Laat die kind die geskenkie saam met ou uitkies, ou help om dit toe te draai en self vir boetie gee;
