The cold snap that has hit Gauteng has done nothing to curb the enthusiasm ahead of the third leg of the 2015 Nissan Trailseeker Series to be held on 29 August at Curro College in Hazeldean, East of Pretoria.

The Hazeldean event has always been fast and furious because of its relatively flat route profile, but with last year’s addition of a newfound climb adding 30% more elevation on the marathon route, things have been shaken up towards the sharp end of the race. Curro College Hazeldean recently helped non-profit organization, Judea Hope, to pack a record setting million meals. The meals were packed on 5 & 6 June 2015 by volunteers, including corporates, churches and schools, who each donated R25 000 for 60 boxes and 18 000 meals.

‘n Verdere 4 bouplanne is onlangs goedgekeur.

It is with great sadness that we recently had to say goodbye to 3 of our valued and respected residents in The Retreat who passed away.

Oom Grobbie, from Unit 76, passed away on 27 June,Danie Joubert from Apartment 10 passed away on 28 June, and John Williams, from Unit 67, passed away on 02 July.

Our thoughts are with their family and friends during this time of mourning.

Water issues in node now resolvedOn 30 April residents started complaining about low water pressure in their houses and the problem was subsequently reported to the Tshwane council. On 14 May, the entire Hazeldean ran out of water and residents turned to their Estate Managers for assistance.

Sabreal approached Andre Van der Walt, the Ward 101 Councillor, to assist in the matter. He contacted various senior members at the council in an attempt to solve the matter.

Explanations were given, but the problem remained. The water outages were intermittent, as it would return late at night and then disappear again early in the morning.

Sabreal News

Private water tankers were brought in by the estates to relieve the shortage and Hazeldean Farm generously sponsored drinking water to the residents of The Retreat. The water returned to normal on 27 May.

Unfortunately, to date, no offi cial report have been received from council on the cause of the problem, but we would like to thank Andre Van der Walt for his diligent action and assistance in resolving the issues.

Hazel’s Nature NookEach year I dread the arrival of winter. The Kalahari High Pressure brings our dry months and with that the usual flu spells, veld fires and cloudless skies. This year I have decided to embrace the seasonal changes and the beauty it brings.

Driving through Hazeldean I noticed that winter has been very mild so far, with only a little bit of frost around the watercourses and remarkable day time temperatures.

As mentioned earlier, our winter climate is governed by the Kalahari High Pressure Cell that subsides over the interior and blocks the multiple cold fronts bombarding the Western Cape. This saves us from the winter rain, but creates perfect conditions for the spread of veld fires. Veld fires can cause major damage to properties, but is not necessarily bad for the environment.

Smoke and heat are sometimes needed for the germination of seeds and clearing the environment of built-up biomass, and subsequently clearing the way for more palatable grasses. It might seem counter-intuitive that destruction can benefit the environment, but a successful ecosystem depends on cycles of new replacing old.

The key word is prevention when trying to limit the risk of fire. Here at Hazeldean we limit the risk through firebreaks. A firebreak is a strip of land where vegetation has been removed or modified to contain or to reduce the spread and intensity of any veld fire that may occur in or around a property.

When is a firebreak necessary?Landowners are required to prepare firebreaks on their side of the boundary where there is a reasonable risk of veld fires. If there is a reasonable risk, by not preparing a firebreak a veld fire could start or spread across his or her land, causing harm to someone else.

What should I do to reduce my risk of veld fires?• If possible, make firebreaks around your home by

using a mower, spade or rake and trimming branches well clear of the house.

• Clean roof gutters of leaves, twigs etc.• Remove all rubbish, leaf litter and shrubs growing too

close to the house. • Keep grass short and green.• Fit hoses to reach all parts of the house and garden.• Store wood, fuel, paints, etc. well clear of the house.• Decide on a household plan to either leave early or

stay to protect your home during a veld fire.

What do I do if I see there is a veld fire close to the estate? Contact your Estate Manager as he/she should have a contingency plan and will notify the correct authority to ensure that the fire will be controlled.

Abreal NewsThe Hazeldean Node Maintenance Team faced some challenges due to the recent water issues. With the water now restored, the team is going full steam ahead with the redesign of the gardens in the estates they work in. They have planted seeds which have begun sprouting, and residents will soon begin to see the changes.

They have also started with the gardens in phase 5 of The Retreat as construction has now been completed. The gardeners are even assisting some of the residents in the beautification of their own little gardens.

The months of July and August are the ideal time to trim trees and the team have recently begun doing so in the Node.

Thabang Sereetsi, a driver for the Hazeldean maintenance team has shown great potential, prompting Abreal to provide a bursary which will enable him to complete his degree in finance. He has been studying on his own for quite some time and is doing exceptionally well thus far.

The Hazeldean Node Maintenance Team is available to do small, private maintenance jobs for residents in Hazeldean, can assist with the installation and repair of irrigation as well as gardening. For more information, please contact Marianne Botes or Remona van Seventer on 012 809 5702 or send an email to [email protected]

The Hazeldean Square Biltong@ZA Outlet has been revamped, upgraded and rebranded as a Fleisherei Deli.

Fleisherei (incorporating Biltong@ZA) is a biltong and meat retailer with their own processing facility to supply their different outlets with a wide range of biltong and meat products.

Their biltong processing is done using a traditional curing and drying method to enable them to produce thick cut biltong with an exquisite taste. They also stock and produce mainly yellow fat biltong and have (and will) go to great lengths to keep on delivering these superior products to their clients.

The newly revamped store will still be offering the full range of their outstanding and well-loved biltong, as well as an exciting range of fresh and processed meat products. Fleisherei caters for all your quality meat requirements: from a delicious tender steak or chicken flatty for your braai, or stewing beef for your soup, to smokey sausages and cold meats.

They have a carefully selected supplier base which enables them to go on delivering superior, consistent products throughout their range.

There is no compromise on ingredients, hygiene or processes. This is evident in their processing facility which has strict hygiene, temperature and process control systems in place to increase product quality and consistency as well as shelf life.

Biltong products include:

• Original, Hunters & Chilli Biltong.• Original, BBQ & Chilli Bites.• Thick, thin and fat-free Dry Wors.• Beef Cabanossi.• Bacon Biltong.• Biltong Chips.• A variety of game biltong and dry wors depending on

availability.

• The name biltong originates from the Dutch words “Bil” meaning buttock and “Tong” meaning strips - as such, the word biltong means “buttock strips” when translated.

• Fleisherei’s biltong dries for an average of 12 days before being shipped to their stores.

• Fresh meat will always have a red colour due to the presence of oxygen. The moment the oxygen depletes, the red colour will fade into a brown colour.

• Fleisherei have vacuum packing facilities. Give them 3 days’ notice in advance as well as your detailed order and they can prepare it for you accordingly.

• Red meat is one of the best sources of B vitamins, which help to maintain nerve cells and normal blood formation.

Did you know?

On August 12, 2012, the inaugural World Elephant Day was launched to bring attention to the urgent plight of Asian and African elephants.

There are two species of elephants, African and Asian, and while they are similar in physiology, they are too biologically different to interbreed.

Recent scientific findings suggest that the forest-dwelling African elephant is a genetically distinct species, making it a third elephant species.

The African elephant (Forest and Savannah) is threatened with less than 400,000 remaining worldwide.

Tusks are found in African elephants of both sexes while only in Asian males.

An African bull’s tusks can grow to over 11 feet long and weigh 220 pounds.

Hazeldean Offi ce Park construction updateThe fi rst building in Extension 36 has been completed and the Jacana Close and Flamingo buildings are currently under construction. Construction of these 2 buildings commenced in February this year and already more than 50% of the units in these buildings have been sold.

At Jacana Close the brickwork have started and at Flamingo, the raft foundation has been cast and the concrete retaining walls are being constructed from the basement to the ground fl oor.

Construction is expected to be completed by end of October 2015, with a potential trading date of 1 December 2015 for both buildings.

Great care has been taken to ensure that the dam/wetland in the park is very well maintained and we are very proud about how well the wetland is performing.

The water that gets held in the dam is used to irrigate the entire park’s landscaping and is currently almost at capacity.

Sectional title offi ce space in this A-grade offi ce park is being sold with prices starting at R14, 500/m².
