Hello everyone
National Sorry Day and Reconciliation Week Our school staff would like to acknowledge National Sorry Day and Reconciliation Week -Grounded in Truth, Walk Together with Courage. This ties in well with so many of our school mottos, including Together We Can Make It Better. Students will be learning about these topics this week in class.
Congratulations to all our students that participated in NAPLAN over the last two weeks. I was so proud of all of our students who tried so hard to answer even the trickiest of questions to the best of their ability. Remember that NAPLAN is a tool that our teachers use to assist them with their planning for your students learning. The results provide a snapshot of student knowledge. Your child's results will be available latter in the year. Well done Yr 3 & Yr 5.
New Staff We are excited to announce that we have two new staff starting this week. Will Ward (Aboriginal Education Officer) will be working with us for the rest of the year under an agreement with Coomealla HS to support us with improving engagement and behaviour with some of our male students. Shaina Collins (School as Community Centre Coordinator) was successful in our recent interviews to fill this position that has been vacant for a number of years. Shaina will be running our Playgroup as well as developing a series of other projects to further connect our school, local agencies and our students. I would like to thank Kendall and Corinna for their work with our Playgroup over the last few years while the position has been vacant.
Work Experience Program This week we have 3 Year 10 students from Coomealla HS working in our classrooms alongside our AEO's for their Work Experience placement.
Tyrell will be in Kangas Lindsay will be in Perch Tarissa will be in Goannas
I know everyone will make them all feel welcome this week.
School Cross Country Carnival - Friday 31st May Cross Country will start at 10am. Kinders will do a fun run. Followed by the 8year and above students. All welcome. Come along and be part of the cheer squad.
School Photos School photos have arrived. Parents can now collect them from the office.
Tips for parents in reducing the spread of head lice
As infestations are particularly common in primary schools, it is best to choose a treatment that can be used over time. There is no single solution to eradication, only persistence.
regularly check your children's hair teach older children to check their own hair tie back and braid long hair keep a fine tooth head lice comb in the bathroom and encourage all family
members to use it when they wash their hair.
Earn & Learn Please remember your earn and learn stickers from Woolworths. A collection box is at both stores in Mildura or you can bring them to the office.
Uniform Hair Ties for all students with long hair male or female/ School Shirt / School Jackets
Head Lice Unfortunately we have had a couple of reported cases of head lice in the school. Could all parents/carer check their child’s head and treat if necessary. We ask that all children with long hair please wear it in a ponytail at school. Thank you Lollies at School We ask all families not to send lollies and chocolates in their child’s lunchbox. These items go against our healthy eating program.
Last week in Kangas, students in Year One and Two began participating in a structured spelling program to support the spelling skills they are already learning through modelled and independent writing. Students will be given ten words to learn each week. These will be high frequency words and words that they are able to hear and record the sounds they can hear, to spell them.
Our ‘In the World of the Story ‘ book this week is ‘Silly Billy‘ by Anthony Browne. Our guided and independent writing will come from our shared experience of reading this book. In independent writing the students are learning to use adjectives to make
their story more interesting.
Have a wonderful week from Mrs Shaddock and Lisa.
Howdy all and welcome to the mid week of Term 2! Yes, Week 5 is upon us and the weeks are moving quickly! Last Friday the Perch and Goannas classes both went to Fort Courage for the day. We learnt a lot about Landcare, the bird life in the area, the weeds that grow and where a lot of them originated from, and the types of fish that can be found in our local waterways. The day was quite long for the children and often a change to routine can be a big adjustment. On the whole, the students were attentive and well behaved and enjoyed their day out.
This week on Friday, we have our school Cross Country. I would like to wish all of the students the very best for the event. If they way they have been practicing is an indication of their keenness to participate, they are ALL WINNERS already!
Last week’s Student of the Week was Missy. She has been working well and at-tempting more independent tasks. Keep up the great effort Missy! Our two achievement awards were Jakoda for her fantastic effort with her cross country practice and Zephaniah for showing great sportsmanship during P.E lessons and in general in the playground. Well done to all three students.
For now, all here in Perch class would like to wish each and every one of you a fantastic happy and safe week ahead.
Goannas
Mrs Lyn Weinert and Mrs McGlynn
So much interesting learning has happened this week in Goannas.
Numeracy was centred around Whole Number and calculating Area. We developed our understanding of why ‘times tables’ are important in every day life. We also investigated how working to scale is important in
Each Week Mr. Stewart works with students to develop their ability to use technology. The ‘blue bots’ are a big hit. Building Lego robots are also a hit.
Friday was spent at Fort Courage (An Environment Learning Centre). Students were involved in learning how to look after the native environment. While we learnt how to identify the different fauna and flora, we also had lots of fun.
