As things have changed drastically this year, there will be no Mother’ day

cards or chocolates at the door, since there will be no church

service,  instead, I have decided to make a donation in lieu of cards and

choccies to Fundisa in Winterton which is near our holiday home, in the Drakensberg.  �ere is a desperate need

for food in an area of great poverty.  My sincere best wishes to all Mothers hope that you will be able to enjoy the day, which many will not be

able to do.

Family of the week

Your family...

We are Lauren (Mom), Daniel (Dad), Dylan (11

year old son), Oliver (6 year old son). Lauren is a

doctor working in re-insurance and Daniel

works in tech. Dylan and Oliver are in Grade 5

and 1, respectively, at St John's College. We live

in Waverley and we have 2 Labrador dogs. Daniel

grew up in Durban (Pinetown Boys' High) and

Lauren grew up in Pretoria (Pretoria High

School for Girls). We've lived in Johannesburg

since 2006 and have lived abroad in the UK too.

We enjoy spending time together and visiting with

family. �e boys love board games, riding their

bikes, playing with our dogs and watching fun

movies.

Your connection to St Columba's...

Lauren grew up in St Columba's in Hat�eld,

Pretoria. Daniel grew up in a Church of England

setting. Once the boys were big enough, we sought

a church that we could attend. We'd heard good

things about St Columba's Parkview and came to

visit. We found it warm and welcoming, so we've

stayed!

We are incredibly fortunate and blessed. We've

been able to work from home and our employers

encouraged us to do so before the o�cial

lockdown started so we have been at home for 8

weeks now. We have a nice garden, so we can get

some exercise   (Daniel ran a 15km "trail run" in

the garden). We miss our friends and extended

families and look forward to the days when we

can be together again.

Your situation during lockdown...

Any insights gained during this

period...

- Mostly that we are truly blessed, and that we

realise that there are people whose experience

during lockdown has been very di�cult. It's

important to have empathy and understand the

complications that this brings to peoples' lives,

and to help were we can.

- Teachers are truly amazing. In the beginning,

we had to learn how to teach the kids, and re-

learn how to do some of the work we're supposed

to teach them. �e teachers were new to this

mode of learning as well, and they've evolved so

quickly with compassion and calmness. �e

experience of schooling from home is now much

easier and less stressful.
